Spotlight On: Custom Vinylmation Artist John Dela Cruz
Graphic designer John Dela Cruz sent us a great take on the mystery chaser with his custom Vinylmation.
Destination Vinylmation: You created a great looking custom, but do you also collect Disney’s vinylmation?
John: I’m a new collector, bitten by the “chase” bug not too long ago. I found myself going back and forth into local Disney Stores saying “Okay, just one more box” or “Last one, this is the one” all in an effort to get the last figure I needed to complete my Have A Laugh set. I never understood the “thrill” of blind boxing that people talked about until I opened my first chaser. It took so many doubles and triples to get Conductor Pete, but the money didn’t matter at that point. It was the “chase” that mattered.
DV: Yep, that’s how we all get hooked. Now tell us about the inspiration of this custom figure that you named “All For The Chase!”.
John: This started out as a joke amongst my cousins who also collect. They said I should create this one because it’s the only one on the vinylmation packaging that nobody seems to ever get. I currently have it up for sale on ebay and can be searched using “ALL FOR THE CHASE – DISNEY VINYLMATION CUSTOM 3″ MICKEY”. The design is a no-brainer with obvious inspiration, but I plan on making more of these if the vinylmation collectors want it as well as a number of other custom pieces that are currently in the works.
DV: Thanks John, we look forward to seeing what comes next.
John: Thank you for your time and I hope to hear some thoughts on my custom.

Also worth noting, the Vinylmation talk that was originally scheduled from 11:30-noon on 9/11/11 is now extended to 11-noon. Interesting…
Also, we’re working on the details, but we’re going to have a meet up after the event on Sunday. Look for more information soon!

I can’t wait! We have never been to Disneyland, and we have limited time, so we want to know what should we see? What rides are must dos? Where should we eat? (limited post Florida Project RSP and D23 Expo budget remember) Where should we NOT eat? Any info would be wonderful! I don’t want to be rushed, I want to be able to enjoy the park and take lots and lots of pictures. Are there some tips on Fast Passes and order of rides?

Pint Sized Disney: Pepper Grinder Jr.
Last week, I raved over my favorite Jr Vinylmation, but not all Jrs are created equally. There are some that I think are not as well designed, and in general look sloppy. Let me introduce you to my absolute least favorite Jr ever:
Pepper Grinder from the Occupations Chef combo set.
It took me a good fifteen minutes to even figure out what this was. At first I thought that it was a gavel. My second guess… the vase optical illusion… nope. And then it hit me, it was with the chef, so it must have been a pepper grinder.
This is not a really well thought out design, so let’s take it apart. The head is 360, and looks like it might make a promising figure…so the head isn’t awful. Then we get to the body… yeah. The body isn’t 360 which takes away from the head being 360 and ruins the general effect. The curves of the grinder are not even and ends up making it look like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate River/ Waterfall. And then there are the feet… another fail. The stripe down the side takes away even more from the 360 effect, and the round on the foot on the far right image is less rounded than the other foot.
In general, this is not a good design, and makes me wish they had just scrapped it, and gone with another kitchen oriented thing, like a spork. That is all and I will see ya’ll next time.

ZoMG: New Wish-A-Littles at D23
The countdown to D23 is on! These past few weeks Disney has been giving us sneak previews at what we can expect to see at the D23 Expo. This is all so exciting. The first Expo in 2009 was SO much fun. I can’t wait to see what Disney has in store for us this year!
Today I found out from my good friends over at Destination Vinylmation that Kidada Jones will be on hand at the D23 Expo on Sunday August 21st at 1pm to sign and take photos with guests, as well as debut the new fall Wish-A-Littles.
I cannot contain my excitement. As you have seen in some of my past posts, I am a HUGE Kidada fan. I was so excited when I heard about this collaboration with the Disney Store, and now we are finding out there is even more to come!!
The last set of Wish-A-Littles that were released were, Snow White, Cinderella, Tiana, and Belle. Now, the next set of Wish-A-Littles that are going to make their debut at D23 are, Ariel, Tinkerbell, Alice and Jasmine. These figures look incredible. They go perfectly with the previously released Princesses. I am so happy that Kidada decided to include Ariel – since after all she is my favorite. I will have to personally thank her at the Expo!
Here are some photos of the new Wish-A-Littles
| Ariel My favorite. I love the way she designed this one. They all have that cute look like they are laughing and I love the small details she added to Ariel, like the flower in her hair. I will definitely purchase this Wish-A-Little at the Expo and maybe even have her sign it! |
|
| Tinkerbell I love how her classic green dress fits perfectly on this mold. She looks adorable. |
|
| Alice Now Alice is not an official Princess but we will let her slide because she looks so darn cute! I love the bow in her hair, this turned out perfect! |
|
| Jasmine I love the colors on this one, especially the details on her headband and earrings. She looks beautiful. |
Inside each Kidada Wish-A-Little there is a charm necklace. I can’t wait to see what each girl will have inside. Maybe Ariel will have a shell, Tinkerbell could have a wand, Alice could have the white rabbit, or maybe the eat me/drink me bottles; Jasmine could have the lamp or maybe even her kitty raja. The possibilities are endless.
I will be there in line to meet Kidada at 1pm; hopefully I will see you guys there!
I can’t wait to see what else will be available from the Wish-A-Little line when it debuts at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California next week August 21st.
