The Backs of Robots

Disney released this picture of the backs of all the 3″ Robots. I especially love the back of the Mystery Chaser!

There Ain’t No Party Like a Pirate Party!

Claudia, one of our readers/listeners and featured custom artist, sent us her pictures, video and a few words about Friday’s Pirates of the Caribbean Vinylmation release party at D-Street Orlando where they had up for sale some amazing one-of-a-kind Pirate themed customs. She was there for both the morning Vinylmation release and afternoon artist signing with Casey Jones. During the afternoon festivities, a Pirate Band entertained the crowd. Claudia grabbed some video for us:

Some rain moved into the area, so the band and signing were moved indoors

Claudia took pictures off all the customs before they were sold.
“I arrived at 9am, and there were 9 people in front of me. Rosa (D-Street store Manager) said that the first person arrived at 4:30am.”
“They had wrist bands to those wanting to buy customs.”
“The wrist bands to those wanting to get Casey’s signatures were given after you made your purchase.  You were allowed to get 2 vinyls signed by Casey, but you were able to get back in line by obtaining a different color wrist band.”

ZoMG: The Lion King

I am so excited to talk about this upcoming Vinylmation set! The Lion King is one of the best Disney movies and I really think everyone is going to respond well to this collection! There are so many great characters that Disney could incorporate into this newly anticipated series and I am going to brain storm some ideas here with you guys!

We already mentioned on the site, we have Banzai (Villains 1) and Simba (Animation 1) but that doesn’t mean these characters wont be repeated. I am first of all assuming that this set will be the new mold just because the photo of Mufasa looks like the new mold shape, which means they could remake/innovate these characters to look even more amazing on the new mold.

We already have Mufasa so that is one character. Mufasa looks amazing. I like the way that his face is so big it takes up the whole body just about, it really makes him look ferocious!
Now going through the classic Lion King characters there are so many to choose from. Here are some of my guesses.
Copyright Disney
Simba – There will 100% be another Simba figure. He is the Lion King after all. The Simba from Animation 1 is a younger looking Simba so maybe this set will have an older version or both!

I just can’t wait to be king Simba – Simba with the leaves all around his head
Copyright Disney
Nala – Simba’s best friend/girlfriend – Young Nala or Older Nala
Copyright Disney
Sarabi – Simba’s mommy
Copyright Disney
Timon – regular or maybe Timon in a hula skirt
Copyright Disney
Pumba

 Zazu

Rafiki – This figure would be great! They should definitely give him an accessory of his stick! It would fit perfectly into the new Vinylmation molds hand!

Scar

Pride Rock related figure – maybe with Rafiki holding up baby simba
Copyright Disney
Elephant graveyard related figure – maybe with all three hyenas

I’m sure there are more things that I’m forgetting but let’s talk about this! Let me know in the comments what you guys are thinking!! We will have to wait and see the final product on August 29th when they are released!

Noah Exclusive D23 Vinylmation

We all know when Noah does a Vinylmation, it is something to behold. Take a look at this D23 Exclusive figure that will be available at the August Convention in Anaheim.

This one-of-a-kind figure has a running broom on the body, the D23 logo and Tinker Bell on the head, a sorcerers hat and a Mickey silhouette on the back. As will most of Noah’s creations, this 9″ figure comes on a display stand with a piece of Noah’s artwork on the back. Wow, I wish I could see this one in person, that paint job looks awesome. If you missed it, we talked to Noah about his work a few weeks ago.

More Cute Then We Have Ever Seen!

Surprise! Disney released two 9″ Cutesters Like You figures at the Disney Store Online today. They both retail for $39.95 and are LE 650. These are the first 9″ figures from the Cutesters series.

Gothy

Great color pallet on this figure. I like the pig tails with skulls, nice touch.
Cheery

A cheerleader here who attends VM. Hmmm, a Vinylmation school! Looks like she has the added detail of painted finger nails.

Disney Starwars Figures: Series 5

Right next to Muppets Star Wars was a sign displaying the 5th series of the Disney Star Wars line of figures. This is where they take classic Disney characters and and put them into the Star Wars universe. Before Vinylmation, these were my favorite Disney collectibles.

Looks like this one has a decidedly Clone Wars feel to it. Like all the previous sets, Series 5 figures will be sold individually at an $8.95 price point.

Check out my article for Destination Disney at DestinationD.info for a review of the full Series 5 lineup.

Pop! Goes The Vinyl

by Nick LoCicero

Earlier this week, Disney released a new series of Vinyl toys called Pop! Vinyl.

These are not to be confused with our beloved Vinylmation, but they are along the same family lines that Vinylmation came from.

As a side note here, we are very excited about this weekend’s podcast. We will be joined by Kristina from Tomopop.com. That is a wonderful website dedicated to toys and focuses a lot on vinyl toys. We know a lot of Vinylmation collectors out there are like we were. We didn’t know the history of the vinyl toy. All these things we enjoy (or don’t), blind boxes, chasers, variants, have all been done before and will be done again. Kristina is going to give us a history lesson on vinyl toys and maybe a peak into the future of Vinylmation. Now, back onto subject, she will also review Disney’s latest Pop! Vinyl toys. Until then, here is a quick breakdown on the series:

The main thing to note about this set is that all the characters take their own form. It is not like Vinylmation where they all have to be painted onto one (for now) canvas shape. It is a 12 figure open window set with a ton of great characters.

Pop Vinyl are only available at Disney Stores and the Disney Store Online. They retail for $12.50. Each figure is listed at 3 3/4 inches tall, just a Jiminy Cricket top hat taller than Vinylmation. Although Stitch and Mike look a little shorter than the other ten.

Overall, I really like the Pop! Vinyl collection. The colors are vibrant, the clothing details are wonderful and they just have a fun classic yet modern look to them. I really enjoy the caricature type design of each classic animated film star. The idea is a bit like Pook-A-Looz.

Buzz Pook-A-Looz

Ya, I also have a few of those.  I’ll be adding some Pop! Vinyl to my Disney collection. Here is my take on a few of these individual figures:

Maleficent is my favorite figure. She made a great 9″ Vinylmation, and this vinyl doesn’t disappoint either. Her face and horns are brilliant. Her clothing also takes nice form and the colors are vibrant.

Snow White is another favorite out of this set. The big rounded face and huge bug eyes really tell the story of this cute princess. I can almost hear her sweat voice singing to me.

On the flip side, I don’t like the Mickey Mouse design. The face looks very vacant. The welcoming open arms are a cool feature, but the overall look is a bit blah.

What do you think about Pop! Vinyl? Will these make it into your Disney collection?

A Little Less Magic in Orlando

Update: 5/30/11 As noted in the comment below, the closure of the Florida Mall Disney Store is only temporary. Check out the story in the Orlando Sentinel. The store will be renovated to included many interactive features and will reopen in September. A nice sign on the door would have been nice. But two parts of the story below remain the same… Sanford, for a while, is Orlando’s closest Disney Store and… I still want that Mouse Ear archway for my house!

5/29/11 Looks like Vinylmation collectors will have one less place in Central Florida to purchase Disney Store Exclusive figures. Thank you to Chris for sending us this picture:

Gate down, lights off, store empty. This is the now former Disney Store inside the Florida Mall in Orlando. Closed for business. I’ll take the archway for my room! Collectors now will have to drive north on I-4 a bit to the Seminole Towne Center in Sanford.
