Dirk Wallen’s 1/15/14 WDW Photo Report

WDWNT Reporter Dirk Wallen visited Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Epcot, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom last week and has some newsworthy photos (and video) to share with us, so let’s take a look:

Banners for The Jungle Book on Blu-Ray now hanging in the Animation Courtyard

A billboard up as well

A billboard for Maleficent is also up near PIXAR Place, and yes, the horns stick out of the top…

The scanner boards at Star Tours have still not been activated to work with MagicBands yet

There’s also a new sign that will interact with guests installed in the pre-show area at Muppet Vision 3-D

The Etch-A-Sketch in the queue at Toy Story Mania was finally turned on last week, here’s a video showing the device in action:

Osborne Lights are coming down

All clear on this end of the street

The AFI exhibit is quietly being updated at the exit of the Backlot Tour

A few props have been switched out and moved around

Among the new additions is a costume from Batman

There are also now some items from E.T.

The croissant doughnut (or Cronut) is our only photo from Epcot, but you can pick up this incredible snack at the Refreshment Port

The Let The Memories Begin signage has been removed from the front of Animal Kingdom

Some walls are up near Island Mercantile where FastPass+ kiosks once stood… not sure if they are moving this help desk or not

Walls now up blocking guests from Camp Minnie-Mickey as it transforms into AVATAR

Camp Minnie-Mickey signage around the park has been removed

Work continues on the new home for Festival of the Lion King and the former Dawa Bar has now been absorbed by walls to accommodate queue construction

A look at the theater construction from far away

Not too long ago, Dug and Russell got some permanent signage for their meet and greet

Since Camp Minnie-mickey is closed and Animal Kingdom is down one show, Dinoland is now hosting a dance party

Here’s a short clip of the new offering that is full of obscure characters:

WDWNT: The Magazine – 2014 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend Review

This year marked the 21st Walt Disney World Marathon. There was also a Half Marathon, a 5K and the first ever WDW 10k. Around 30,000 runners descended upon Walt Disney World last weekend to take part in one or more of those runs. Those who completed both the half and the full achieved the Goofy Challenge. And over 7,000 of those where insane enough to run all four races over four consecutive days to earn the coveted Inaugural Dopey Challenge finishers medal.

The week stared with the Run Disney Race Expo at the ESPN Wide World of Sports where guests picked up their race bibs and shopped for merchandise. There were a variety of exhibitors on hand selling everything from clothing to food to displays for your medals. There was also a large official Disney Merchandise section that had shirts, hats, magnets, mugs, pins, Vinylmation and more for the various races. New Balance was also on hand, and for the second year in a row, had character inspired running shoes that may have been the most coveted piece of merchandise at the event. Runners and couch potatoes alike stormed the baseball stadium early Wednesday morning to sign up for a time to come back and try on and purchase the new kicks.

All-runDisney-shoes

The designs included Sorcerer Mickey, Minnie, Cinderella and Goofy. These highly detailed, and very comfortable running shoes, retailed for $72-$125. I picked up the Sorcerer Mickey pair and actually ran all four events in them. I only wear New Balance anyway, but they fit and performed extremely well. I look forward to some new designs next year. There was talk from the sales associate of a new princess shoe each year, with 2015 being Snow White. My fingers are crossed for a certain duck as well.

Thursday, the first race day, was the 5K. A 3.1 mile course that took runners from the Epcot parking lot, through some back lot, around the World Showcase and back into the parking lot. It was a very short race, so character photo ops were non-existent however Pluto and the rest of the Fab 5 were at the finish line. Pluto is the mascot of this race, and finishers received a rubber medal with the pup in front of his dog house. Later that morning were the kids races at the Wide World of Sports.

Friday morning was the Inaugural 10K. This was a 6.2 mile course that wound out of the Epcot lot and down the street before looping back toward Epcot and once again around the World Showcase and some back lot areas before winding up back in the parking lot. It was a rainy morning, but not cold. There were a few character stops inside Epcot such as Mushu, Dopey and some princes and princesses. The mascot of the 10K is Minnie Mouse, so she adorned the first ever finishers medal for this event.

racemedals2014 009

The mile markers were new this year. They had characters from various Disney and Pixar animated films as well as the Fab 5. People always enjoy posing for photos in front of these. I was impressed that they already had a Frozen one for the event. Here were some of my favorites.

Saturday was the Half Marathon. 13.1 miles that started at Epcot, continued up towards the Contemporary Resort, then into the Magic Kingdom back lot, up Main Street USA, around Fantasyland and out through the back of Frontierland, then we made our way back to Epcot for a jog around Spaceship Earth, before ending up in (you guessed it) the parking lot. Donald Duck is the face of this race and the finishers medal glistened with his image.

racemedals2014 028

The final race was the WDW Full Marathon. 26.2 miles that wound around all four parks, the WDW Speedway and ESPN Wide World of Sports. The mascot for this race was Mickey of course.

racemedals2014 031

For those who ran both the half and the full had completed the Goofy challenge and the ones who ran all four completed the first ever Dopey Challenge.

racemedals2014 017

Like most Run Disney events that I have been a part of, I was happy with the way the races were organized. It was easy to park and find my corral. The staff at the end of the race were attentive with the food and medical care. It was also easy to find where I had to go for my medals and wristbands (proof of race completion). As for the course itself, I found a positive and a negative as compared to previous runs.

The positive was the water stops. The tables seemed to stretch further than before, with more volunteers to hand out the drinks, meaning there was never a hold up. They also did not run out of water, as I had seen in years past.

The negative was the character stops. I am a newbie, only taking part in Run Disney events for two years. I also may have been spoiled by the amount of entertainment that was on the 15th anniversary half and 20th anniversary full, but there seemed to be a real lack of entertainment this weekend. And a majority of the characters out there, were not completely special. That being said, there were some great photo opportunities. Here are some of the highlights.

From my point of view, the inaugural Dopey Challenge was a success. It was extremely fun to take part in a full weekend worth of runs and activities around Walt Disney World. The price, coming in at around $450, could be an issue with participating every year. I may have to pick and choose. I may also cut the Tower of Terror and Wine and Dine runs out of my calendar due to cost. But with the 15th anniversary of the Goofy Challenge next year (and a special medal) I do look forward to adding the two shorter races and completing the Dopey again in 2015.

All Aboard for Brand New Disney Railroad Merchandise

Many die-hard Disney fans have seen the iconic photo of Walt riding the train he built in his backyard for his daughters. His love for trains is well-known.

walt-disney-backyard-train-set

Walt Disney World has featured railroads in its Parks since the opening days, and in honor of Walt’s love of trains, a series of Disney Attraction Poster t-shirts will be released January 27th, 2014.

 rr tshirts

The Disney Design Group artists worked with Designer Richard Terpstra to create  two t-shirts inspired by the Disney Railroad attraction posters found within the Disney Parks. According to the book, “The Poster Art of the Disney Parks” by Walt Disney Imagineers Vanessa Hunt and Danny Handke, the original attraction posters that inspired  the merchandise designs were created by Jim Michaelson, Ernie Prinzhorn and Rudy Lord in 1977.

These t-shirts will be available on the Disney Parks online store from January 27 to February 2, 2014.  The railroad-themed shirts will ship in 6-8 weeks (express shipping is not available).

rr cup and plate

While not available in January, these poster-themed plates and cups will be available at the new home goods mini-shop, Centerpiece,  at the Marketplace Co Op in Downtown Disney Marketplace opening later in 2014. There will be additional plates and cups featuring other attraction posters offered in Centerpiece.

The Disney Parks attraction posters will also be offered later in the year, as a set, so look for those in a few months. The 2014 poster calendar set has featuring these has sold out and will not return to stores according to Disney.

Who’s coming aboard for train-themed merchandise?

PHOTOS: Giant “Steampunk” Maleficent as Dragon Revealed for Festival of Fantasy Parade

0112ZW_0566KPmalef-613x407

When the new Festival of Fantasy Parade debuts at the Magic Kingdom in March, guests will be greeted by a 26 foot tall, steampunk version of Maleficent as a Dragon from Sleeping Beauty. The 35 foot long float was designed along with Michael Curry who also worked with Disney on the Tapestry of Nations parade at Epcot and Finding Nemo: The Musical at Animal Kingdom.

0112ZW_0698KP

The story behind the parade is that the residents of Fantasyland have crafted their own parade floats in their own style, thus, this is a dragon built of parts “available” to the characters.

Disney’s Festival of Fantasy Parade will debut this Spring at the Magic Kingdom, with rumors pointing towards March 16th. This however is not official yet.

REVIEW: Spice Road Table Soft Opens at Epcot

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

This past weekend the Spice Road Table soft opened at the Morocco pavilion in Epcot. There is no official opening date yet and in the meantime no discounts are being accepted (this includes Cast, Tables in Wonderland, Annual Pass, ext.). The restaurant is located right along World Showcase Lagoon giving it stunning views of the park and a new viewing location for Illuminations. The menu for Spice Road  Table is tapas style, featuring classic Mediterranean dishes. Also well the restaurant has a selection of beers, wines, speciality drinks and desserts. Spice Road Table currently does not accept reservations making it a perfect spur of the moment dining choice.

The decor at Spice Road Table is simply stunning. Imagineering once again did an excellent job. Upon walking in, you see a beautiful bar. To the left is the outdoor seating and the indoor seating is on the right.

IMG_3380

IMG_3378

Let’s take a look at what the menu offers for Spice Road Table…

IMG_3384

IMG_3386

Pictured above is the Hummus and Imported Olives. This dish was a table favorite the hummus was so smooth and creamy with no aftertaste that you commonly find with the hummus you can buy in the grocery store.

IMG_3387

Above is the Mediterranean Omelet this was a surprisingly good dish. It’s basically your standard omelet that is stacked on top of potatoes and topped with a thick tomato sauce. I thought it would make a perfect breakfast dish, it was odd to have the omelet mixed with items that were more traditional dinner items.

IMG_3390

Spicy Garlic Shrimp – the name says it all! It wasn’t as spicy as I was expecting and it sure was loaded with garlic.

IMG_3388

The Moroccan Merguez Sausage was by far the spiciest dish we tried out. So if you love spicy this is the dish to try out.

For those of you who have allergies Spice Road Table is happy to accommodate. I have a dairy allergy and the chef came out and I could actually have 7 out of the 10 items. Items that were deemed unsafe, the chicken roll, lamb slider and calamari. Another important note is that ALL the bread served at Spice Road Table contained dairy.  Unfortunately, on this trip we didn’t get to desserts so I am unsure if any of those items are safe.

Overall, it was great to try out the new dishes at Spice Road Table but no dish was a run away hit with me. The food was okay but once you factor in the prices and portions it has me in no rush to be returning to this location.
