More Details & Concept Art Leaks for Downtown Disney’s Conversion to Disney Springs

Well, here we go again. You may remember when we “leaked” the original concept art and plans for Disney Springs in early 2013, but even with a formal announcement following that, Disney has remained very quiet through many stages of the construction process on this overhaul of Downtown Disney. Today, we have uncovered some recently released documents that point to more of what is on the way for Disney Springs.

The now confirmed back story of Disney Springs involves a town that grew around local springs. The Marketplace is essentially the suburbs where residents moved to as the town experienced a boom. The Landing is a commercial district with a train station, bottling co. (Morimoto Asia), dock, and a large ferry boat (Fulton’s). The Town Center is the shopping center of the area and will feature the bulk of the retail options for Disney Springs. The West Side feature remnants of the abandoned train tracks, but is a thriving entertainment district. Further speculative details on the back story can be found in our original pre-announcement story. It seems the original document is pretty much on par with the finalized back story.

Now, let’s get into some new details and concept art for the neighborhoods of Disney Springs, starting with the West Side:

  • On the West Side, Food Truck Park (which will otherwise be known as Exposition Park) slated to open this Summer will now be opening by the end of November 2014.
  • The abandoned elevated train tracks in that are will be called the Sunshine Highline. We still expect this to offer lounge and bar areas when completed.

  • The new park that recently opened in The Landing next to the Boathouse is called Waterview Park. As you can see in the concept art above, there will be a fountain and more trees added soon.
  • In the next 6 months, The Landing should open with 12 retail locations and 7 restaurants including the Boathouse and Morimoto Asia.
  • The walkway between Paradiso 37 and the other stores to the West Side should be open by Thanksgiving
  • BET Soundstage and the Adventurer’s Club locations have been confirmed as venues for new restaurants, so the Adventurer’s Club return rumor can now be ruled out.

We did not get much in the form of new details about the Town Center area, but we did get several new pieces of concept art for this area replacing the Pleasure Island parking lot:

Some notes on the Marketplace:

  • The lake will be called “Lake Buena Vista”, because, believe it or not, it wasn’t called that already.
  • The World of Disney expansion will come out towards Town Center, modifications inside of the store are already taking place
  • More pedestrian bridges will be built over Buena Vista Drive leading guests to and from Hotel Plaza Boulevard.

New “Comfort Food” Dining Options at Columbia Harbor House, Contempo Cafe, ESPN Club, and Sassagoula Floatworks

Even when you’re in the Walt Disney World bubble, sometimes you crave the familiar, such as good old reliable comfort foods. Here’s a collection of some of the new comfort foods available at the Walt Disney World Resort and where to find them:

When I think of comfort food, the first thing that comes to mind is macaroni and cheese. At Columbia Harbor House in the Magic Kingdom, they’ve upped the ante at dinnertime by adding lobster and shrimp to their macaroni and cheese.

Also on the dinner menu is the piping hot chicken pot pie, filled with tender white-meat chicken, vegetables and gravy and topped with crunchy breadcrumbs.

ChickenPotPiesmall

Contempo Café at Disney’s Contemporary Resort offers a beef pot roast with seasonal vegetables, mashed potatoes and gravy, that’s available only at dinner.

Contempo Café also recently added some new flatbread pizzas to their menu, such as the smoked pulled pork flatbread, topped with barbecue sauce, Monterey Jack cheese and vegetable-style slaw.

ESPN Club at Disney’s BoardWalk features chicken and waffles with a kick—jalapeno-cornmeal waffles topped with buttermilk fried chicken and Angry Maple chicken gravy.

Brand new on the menu is a barbecue pulled pork grilled cheese sandwich served on thick-cut brioche. Reports are that it’s as good as it sounds.

Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter is serving up four new loaded baked potato meals, each served with a side of soup or salad. Choose from a baked potato topped with one of the following: barbecued pork; broccoli, cheddar, and bacon; chili and cheese; or chicken, bacon, and cheddar. I have a feeling that whichever you choose, you can’t go wrong.

“Big Hero 6”: The Movie Vs. The Comic Book

maxresdefaultss

Before “Big Hero 6” was Disney’s 54th animated movie, it was one of Marvel’s comic book titles. I thought it would be fun and interesting to go over the similarities and differences between the two.

The Team:

splash-bighero6characters-600x375

Movie: When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the midst of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called “Big Hero 6.”

collage2

Comic Book: When the Japanese government needs a team of state-sanctioned superheroes at their disposal, a top-secret consortium of politicians and business entities known as the Giri is formed to recruit and train potential superhuman operatives for the team, which is named Big Hero 6.  The original team consisted of Silver Samurai, Sunfire, Go Go Tomago, Honey Lemon, Hiro Takachiho and Baymax. Later Silver Samurai and Sunfire left the team and Wasabi-No-Ginger and Fred became the replacement members.

Hiro Hamada:

big-hero-6-hiro-1024x662

Movie: Hiro is a young boy who has lost his parents and is raised by his Aunt Cass. Hiro is very intelligent and uses hit talents to win at gambling during back street illegal robot fighting matches. Tadashi, Hiro’s older brother, tries to save Hiro from a life of crime by convincing him that his talents can be better used by helping others and going to college. After his brother’s heroic death, Hiro starts to find clues that lead him to the villain that caused the death of his brother. Aided by Tadashi’s invention, Baymax, and his brother’s colleagues, Hiro puts together the team of Big Hero 6.

imagesghb

Comic Book: At age 13, Hiro Takachihowas was targeted by the Giri, a top-secret consortium of Japanese politicians and business entities that was established to recruit and train potential operatives for a Japanese super-team, Big Hero 6. Silver Samurai(Kenuichio Harada), Big Hero 6’s initial field leader, first approached Hiro’s mother for permission to have him join the team, but she refused due to her desire for her child to live a normal life. Silver Samurai then approached Hiro directly, but the boy was less than impressed with Big Hero 6. However, after his mother was abducted by the Everwraith, the astral embodiment of all those killed in the 1945 nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Hiro was forced to turn to Big Hero 6 for assistance. After joining forces with the team, which also included his idol, the Japanese hero Sunfire, Hiro opted to join the team and has remained a member ever since. In fact, when Silver Samurai and Sunfire left the Big Hero 6, Hiro was appointed to serve as the team’s field leader. In the comic book, Hiro has no older brother and his father is killed. Instead of being raised by his aunt, Hiro is raised by his mother.

Baymax:

big-hero-6-baymax1-1024x662

Movie: Baymax is an inflatable robot created by Hiro’s older brother, Tadashi, to be a medical healthcare companion. After Tadashi’s death, Baymax becomes Hiro’s protector and closest friend. And after some reprogramming that includes a rocket fist, super strength and rocket thrusters that allow him to fly, Baymax becomes one of the most powerful members of Big Hero 6.

collage3

Comic Book: Monster Baymax began his existence as a science project created by Hiro Takachiho. He was originally designed to be a hydro-powered robotic synthformer programmed to serve as Hiro’s personal bodyguard, butler, and chauffeur. However, prior to the project’s completion, Hiro’s father died and the young inventor programmed Baymax’s artificial intelligence using the brain engrains of his recently departed father. With the thoughts and emotions of Hiro’s father, Baymax became much more than a robotic bodyguard. He also functions as Hiro’s best friend and father figure. Baymax is an artificial synthformer capable of synthtransing his body into various forms. His default form is a large humanoid male designed to be less conspicuous in public while attending to Hiro’s daily needs. His other forms “Battle-Dragon” and “Action-Mecha”, are exponentially more powerful.

Go Go Tomago:

big-hero-6-go-go-tomago-1024x662

Movie: Aptly named GoGo Tomago knows what it takes to be fast. She’s tough, athletic and loyal to the bone, but not much of a conversationalist. Popping bubble gum and delivering well-placed sarcasm are totally her speed. The daredevil adrenaline junkie is at her best on wheels, and when GoGo joins forces with Big Hero 6, she rolls like never before, using maglev discs as wheels, shields and throwing weapon.

2890289-go_go_tomago6-everything-you-need-to-know-about-big-hero-6-in-3-minutes-or-less

Comic Book: Raised on the streets, young street urchin Leiko Tanaka fell in with the Shikei-otaku, one of the many youth-based motorcycle gangs involved in Yakuza activities. At age 18, she was arrested during a botched robbery and sentenced to a term of five years in Tochigi Prison. However, before serving her full sentence, engineers from Japan’s Ministry of Defense came to her with a deal: secure an early release from prison in exchange for test piloting an experimental exosuit. Tanaka, who was chosen as a test subject based on her good behavior in prison and her high-speed motorcycling skills, accepted the government’s terms and soon found herself in the “Go-Go Tomago” exosuit, named for the sphere-like shape the armor takes when propelling through the air at high velocities (“tomago” being the Japanese word for “egg”).  Go-Go Tomago was chosen to be a founding member of the Big Hero 6 due to her proficiency with the exosuit and the belief that her fear of being sent back to prison would make it easy for the Giri to control her. Impulsive and hotheaded, Go-Go initially clashed with virtually every member of her new team. She refused to take orders from the team’s initial field leader, Silver Samurai, and was insanely jealous of teammate Honey Lemon. However, once becoming acclimated to the team, her grudging respect for her teammates evolved into true kinship.

Honey Lemon:

big-hero-6-honey-lemon-1024x662

Movie: A cheerful and talented chemical engineering student at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, Honey Lemon lends her skills to help form San Fransokyo’s premier superhero team Big Hero 6. Her knowledge of alchemy proves powerful when the effusive brainiac becomes part of the Big Hero 6 and creates clever concoctions that when thrown, can get her team out of nearly any jam.

tumblr_muequezDRT1rftaf2o4_1280

Comic Book: Aiko Miyazaki was enrolled in the graduate program at the Tokyo University of Science when she was recruited by Japan’s premiere intelligence agency. Miyazaki’s stunning looks and sharp intellect made her a prime candidate for secret agent status, and she was promptly placed on a research and development team consisting of  top physicists, chemists, and mechanical engineers and put to work creating new technology for the government. The team’s most significant invention was a cluster of artificial, miniature wormholes — tiny warps and distortions in the fabric of space-time. At Miyazaki’s suggestion, the wormholes were contained within an innocuous woman’s purse so they could be applied in the field without attracting undue attention. It was soon discovered that the wormholes, in conjunction with Pym Particles (Ant-man) and cutting-edge nanotechnology, served as ideal storage devices in the field — virtually any object, no matter how large, could be stored in Miyazaki’s aptly-named “Power Purse” for later use. Miyazaki was later recruited to join Big Hero 6 and she adopted the codename “Honey Lemon” (inspired by her favorite television program of the same name). As the most caring and compassionate member of the team, Honey Lemon quickly found herself at odds with teammate Go Go, a tough-talking ex-convict who felt that Honey Lemon received special treatment because of her looks and intellect. However, after several heated squabbles, the two eventually learned to appreciate one another and became good friends.

Wasabi:

big-hero-6-wasabi-1024x662

Movie: Wasabi is an intelligent young man and notable student at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, majoring in in applied physics. Wasabi is committed to precision. He’s super smart and just a touch neurotic, but the big and burly neatnik can’t help but join the cause when Hiro needs him most. As part of “Big Hero 6,” Wasabi amplifies his martial arts skills with jaw-dropping plasma blade weaponry.

538565-wasabi4

Comic Book: Wasabi No Ginger is a master chef.  Wasabi, along with Fred, joined big Hero 6 after Silver Samurai and Sunfire left the team.  He is a weapon master, carries two Samurai swords and can also generate knives with his mind out of Qi Energy.  These knives, often shaped as sushi knives,  have the ability to render his foes unconscious.

Fred:

big-hero-6-fred-1024x662

Movie: Fred is the son of a wealthy couple in the city of San Fransokyo, though he rarely spends quality time with either of them, as they’re often away on the family-owned private isles. Fred is also a regular attendant at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, where he works as the school’s mascot, as well as entertains his passion for science. Fred comes off like a laid-back dude with no direction. But this sign-twirling, monster-loving, comic-book aficionado is sure to go place. For example, Fred doesn’t hesitate to join “Big Hero 6,” and he has a lot of ideas for his super-hero skillset, too. His ferocious, fire-breathing alter ego comes complete with claws, integrated communications and a super bounce.

fredzilla

Comic Book: Nicknamed Fredzilla, he can transform himself into a Godzilla-like creature. Fred seems to surround himself in a type of mysterious aura, shaped like a giant purplish-red kaiju, which acts like a massive suit of psionic armor when expanded to it’s full-size. Even when used at less than half it’s full height and stature, the aura seems to enhance some of his abilities such as strength and stamina but to what level and what else it is capable of is unknown.

Absent Members

Silver Samurai and Sunfire:

collage4

Both Silver Samurai and Sunfire were founding members of Big Hero 6. Silver Samurai later became a villain and one of Wolverine’s greatest nemisis’. Sunfire went on to join the X-Men. Both characters are seen in The Wolverine and X-Men movie franchises, which is owned by FOX. This was part of the reason why they were not shown in Disney’s Big Hero 6.

11/11/14 Disneyland Resort Report – Fantasmic FastPass & Dining Packages Coming, Frozen Shark Jump?, Walt’s Railroading at the Family Museum

 “All Aboard!”

None of Man’s mechanical inventions seem more alive than a train. Especially a steam train. They breathe.

It’s easy to see why a young Walt Disney became enamored with railroading. His hometown of Marceline, MO, was a division point for the the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway where  trains could take on fuel, water, and fresh crews. Among them was his uncle, engineer Mike Martin, a cherub of a man, whose stories of life on the rails thrilled the young man.  Walt later worked a summer job with the railroad, selling newspapers, popcorn, and sodas to travelers. He lost money, but it didn’t dim his fascination of the rails.

A train runs though many of the most treasured of Walt Disney’s creations, like they run right through the center of the American experience. After all, Mickey Mouse was “born” on a cross-country train trip.

Beginning later this week, The Walt Disney Family Museum will debut All Aboard: A Celebration of Walt’s Trains, running from November 13, 2014 through February 9, 2015. This comprehensive exhibition explores the influence that railroading had on Walt Disney’s life and work. It also tells the story of how his railroading legacy lives on to this day in Disney films and theme parks around the world. Including more than 200 artifacts, firsthand accounts, archival videos, images of Walt and his trains, and actual model trains running throughout the show.

Guest curator Michael Campbell, president of the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society, constructed the exhibition to reflect Walt’s railroad journey as told through multiple chapters: Lighting the Fire, Building Steam, Gaining Speed, Full Throttle, Switching Tracks, Branching Out, A Grand Circle Tour Around The World, and Coming Full Circle. The exhibition’s conclusion reminds us that, even over a century later, Walt’s railroading influence remains a vibrant and relevant force.

Frozen So Hot It Might Just Melt

A&EComp

There is a Frozen unit in the “long in the tooth” Christmas Fantasy Parade. The early debut of Disneyland’s parade is primarily due to filming of the Christmas Day television special.

Back during my long nights at the City Desk, I worked a cold and lonely beat, covering the mean streets of the Disneyland Resort for a local bird-cage liner. But nothing like this has crossed our desk since the Big War. It’s like a hostage crisis. Day 351.

I know a lot of folks like their Frozenand I like it fine. A lot of that music does make the hair on the back of my neck stand up, but hey… Let it Go. My attitude was: I playfully punch the phenomenon in the arm. I kid because I love.

But the minute I let my guard down, Frozen slipped a right cross straight to the bridge of my nose, staggering me and caused the referee to call a standing eight-count.

I should have been ready. After all, ABC invented  “Jump The Shark” with a Happy Days episode ratings stunt where Fonzie… jumped a shark. On waterskis. From nearly that moment, the phrase “jumped the shark,” described a program that had abandoned any degree of integrity in a quest for ratings. Generally said right before, “I’m done with it.”

You be the judge, but think I smell some shark after discovering that the yearly Christmas Special has this year been titled: Disney Parks Frozen Christmas Celebration.

I guess getting ratings for what is essentially a 2-hour long commercial for Walt Disney World and Disneyland can be a challenge, if ratings are even the concern. Running under different names, since 1983, well before The Walt Disney Company bought the American Broadcasting Company, the mission of the show was essentially to showcase a highly edited, glossy impression of the Christmas Festivities in Florida, and sell trips to the resort. As the years went on, views and pitches for the Disneyland and other Disney resorts became more frequent. Everybody wanted on. It was like a yearbook for Disney. I’ve always thought that the show was probably hand delivered to ABC, by the Mouse, with “house” commercials sewed in, and some spaces left for the network and the local affiliates to drop in some ads. Make a little “walking around money.” But what do I know from television?

I do know that those unaffected by my cynical outlook, like the wearers of some 3 million Anna and Elsa dresses, will have plenty to celebrate this season. Like: Anna and Elsa’s daily appearance in “A Christmas Fantasy Parade” at Disneyland Park. Also, more songs from the hit soundtrack will be added to “World of Color: Winter Dreams” over at Disney California Adventure for those who are counting. It is also rumored that the ladies from the flick will take up residence in the Animation Building on Hollywood Boulevard. (They’re just gonna crash there for awhile. Is that cool?) Also Olaf’s Frozen Ice Rink, will return this year as part of the Downtown Disney Winter Village.

Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair

The last remnant of the Occupy Frontierland Movement will finally be dislodged from their long standing camp site, as Disneyland announces that Fantasmic viewing will soon transition exclusively to FastPass.

Hard to say what these Sooners are thinking when they get to a show that has been running 22 years, hours early, and throw blankets down on the ground in a busy theme park. Not to mention that once the first show is over, many scoot forward, like a canine in distress, and wait for the second show. And then, there are the lovely Guests who sell their blanketed spots. Stay classy!

This is Disneyland, not Woodstock. “Face painting?” “No, we’re all set.” Don’t take the brown acid!

So, beginning December 12, a “Fantasmic!” FastPass will be required to gain access to the show’s reserved viewing space. Beginning at Disneyland Park opening, “Fantasmic!” FastPass distribution will take place along Big Thunder Trail in Frontierland. They will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until one hour prior to show time or while supplies last, whichever comes first. Each “Fantasmic!” FastPass will indicate the assigned showtime, suggested return time and assigned viewing section. Also, a non-ticketed area will be available in the “Fantasmic!” viewing area each night for limited stand-by viewing on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, there are several new dining packages in Disneyland Park that will allow you to obtain a FastPass for a special viewing area.  Your milage may vary.

This procedure has been found to be sound for World of Color at Disney California Adventure since its premiere. Why have the Park Overlords waited so long to introduce it for Fantasmic?

The blankets, quilts and tie-dyed banners are sure to become elaborate just before the troops move in on 12/12.

That will do it…

Cheers!

“Toy Story 4” To Be Released In 2017 And Directed By John Lasseter

toy story 3 personajes

Walt Disney CEO, Bob Iger, announced today that “Toy Story 4” is in development and will be released in 2017. John Lasseter is to direct the 4th installment of the “Toy Story” franchise. Bob Iger made this announcement to Wall Street analysts while discussing Disney’s 4th quarter results. Very little is known other than that the movie will come out in 2017 and that John Lasseter will direct the movie. John Lasseter directed the very first “Toy Story”, which was also the very first Disney and Pixar co-production. Lassester later went on to direct “Cars” and “Cars 2” and is now the head of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios. It should be very interesting to see John Lasseter go back to the franchise that started his career.
