REVIEW: Whispering Canyon Introduces MASSIVE “10 Gallon Hat” – $27 Dessert Served in a Hat

Whispering Canyon was always one of my favorite restaurants at the Walt Disney World Resort hotels, mostly for the food quality, endless servings, and playful atmosphere. However, a few years ago, I picked Whispering Canyon for a birthday dinner and experienced a really terrible meal. Food was overcooked, under-cooked, and we even ended up waiting an hour past our reservation time. It was this experience which kept me away from Whispering Canyon at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, even though I have frequented Roaring Fork and Territory Lounge.

I wanted a good reason to return to Whispering Canyon, and a good tip from a friend last week was enough to convince me to do so. All he told me was that there was a new dessert, not featured on the menu, served in a “10 gallon hat”. I immediately said, “let’s go to Whispering Canyon!”

Now, while the main purpose of this trip was the ginormous dessert, which we will get to shortly, I do want to review the infamous skillet offered here, so this will be a full review.

The all-you-care-to-enjoy milkshakes are a great value at 7.50, the caramel is a particular favorite of mine. However, I skipped the shakes since there was an acrylic hat filled with sugary confections to order…

There was also cornbread, which I couldn’t manage to get a picture of before we started devouring it…

The skillet itself contains pork ribs, barbecue pulled pork, roasted glazed chicken, beef brisket, western style sausage, mashed potatoes, fresh vegetables, corn on the cob, and baked beans. It is quite the feast and the server will bring you more of whatever you want if the first skillet isn’t enough to conquer your hunger.

Everything was cooked well this time, providing an experience much like the Whispering Canyon I remember from my very first visits. This ain’t Victoria and Albert’s, but if you enjoy good barbecue in endless portions, this is the right place for you.

The 10 Gallon Hat Dessert ($27.00)

Served in a giant plastic hat, this thing is fairly insane. Insane enough where someone looking to eat lighter might go to Beaches & Cream and get the Kitchen Sink…

So, what is in the monstrosity? Well, let me tell you…

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Chocolate ice cream
  • Strawberry ice cream
  • Mine Chocolate Chip ice cream
  • Bananas
  • Pineapple
  • A full piece of Apple Pie
  • Graham Cracker Crumbles
  • A whole vanilla cupcake
  • Strawberry Sauce
  • Caramel Sauce
  • 2 Mickey Mouse cookies
  • A skewer of toasted marshmallows
  • 2 chocolate brownies
  • Chocolate covered bacon

The Ten Gallon Hat is not on the menu, you will likely have to ask for it. In our case, our serve never even brought it up. After she finished rattling off the dessert menu, we then asked if she had anything larger, to which I replied, “Do you happen to have something served in plastic headgear?”

I was rather surprised that there was not a big hoopla made over the ordering of this dessert hat. Whispering Canyon is generally loud: there are servers yelling at guests, guests yelling for ketchup, and loud horse on a stick pony races around the entire dining area. HOW IS THERE NOT SOME LOUD EVENT WHEN SOMEONE ORDERS THE BIGGEST DESSERT AT DISNEY WORLD?

I informed my server that I was disappointed about this, and that I expected more from such an insanely fun establishment. She then brought her manager over to hear my idea. The manager then looked at the server and said. “let’s work on this tonight!”. So, if you order this and something happens before it comes to your table, I guess you can thank ol’ Tom Corless. If nothing happens, well then, I just look stupid as usual I suppose.

The 10 Gallon Hat is suggested for 6-10 guests according to our server. We had 3 full-grown adults & 2 children who at least had a few bites, and we made a sizable dent in this thing. That being said, we are not suggested serving size people and probably devour more dessert than the average human being.

I feel like I’m downplaying the size by saying we almost finished it, but we are not normal, and this was more food than you can imagine, even looking at the photos.

To paraphrase Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park, Whispering Canyon was so worried about creating this dessert, they never wondered if they should. It is really good, but there are a few things that just don’t blend well. I managed to get a bite or two that (I believe) had apple pie, pineapple, and mint ice cream in it. This is not something I wanted. That being said, finding a full vanilla cupcake under a mound of chocolate ice cream pretty much made my day. Nothing is blended in it, so it does make it easy to divvy up everyone’s favorite desserts, despite the daunting size of the overall contraption.

If you are picky in your dessert eating (I don’t care for fruit desserts), choose your bites carefully, but otherwise, dig in as you please. They will also provide bowls if you don’t feel like having your whole party eat out of one hat.

$27.00 is a lot of money (and according to one reader, too expensive for lunch at Tiffins), but this was something unique and is sure to be something everyone in the family will remember about their trip to Disney World for a long time to come. I have encountered some crazy desserts in my time, but the 10 Gallon Hat has to be just about the craziest.

Thanks to Chris and Elizabeth Chatron for their help in ordering and eating this thing…

Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster Refurbishment Scheduled For This Fall

Even though there isn’t a whole lot still open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios right now (just look at our aerial photos and video if you don’t know what I’m talking about), Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith will closing for a refurbishment this Fall.

The ride will be closed October 27th through November 9th, 2016 for some regular maintenance.

This will likely be bad news for guests visiting during this period as it will lengthen waits at the other remaining attractions in the park.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: New Prop Added to Pirates of the Caribbean at Magic Kingdom, More Changes Coming

A new prop has appeared in the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at the Magic Kingdom, one that should be familiar to fans of the popular film series based on the classic ride…

The glass case at the very back of the beach scene looks just like the one used to transport the captured mermaid in the 4th film in the Pirates series, On Stranger Tides.

We also have a video to share of the new prop:

It is unknown if the prop is the actual one from the movie, but it is at least a rather convincing replica of the glass cage featured in the film.

In October 2012, a mermaid scene was added to Pirates of the Caribbean at the Magic Kingdom, projecting images of mermaids onto the surface of the water. The mermaid skeleton on the beach was also added at this time. The projection was turned off quite a while ago, but a similar or updated effect is expected to debut at the attraction soon, especially with the addition of the case which also calls back to these characters from the last film.

Other small changes have been made to the attraction lately, including the removal of the “Dead Men Tell No Tales” banner outside of the ride. Further changes are expected leading into 2017 when a larger enhancement of the attraction is expected to take place.

Children Now Require Biometric Finger Scan to Enter Walt Disney World Theme Parks

Children under the age of 10 have never been required to scan a finger when entering a Walt Disney World theme park, something required of all ticket holders over that age for many years at the Vacation Kingdom of the World. Starting just last week, children under age 10 now are required to have their fingerprint scanned to enter the Walt Disney World theme parks, water parks, and DisneyQuest.

Disney-MagicBand

A guest relations cast member we spoke to over the weekend confirmed the changes after 3 separate reports were sent to us by WDWNT readers.

The change is reportedly part of the continuing effort to fight ticket fraud and Walt Disney World Resort ticket resales. Child tickets in the past would have no fingerprint associated with them, nor would they require photo ID, so it would have been very easy to transfer tickets between guests under the age of 10.

Disney has made no official statement on the new policy beyond the instructions given to front gate cast members at their theme parks.

PHOTOS: Disney World Rolls Out Free Mosquito Repellent to Combat Zika Virus

On Saturday, we told you about the introduction of complimentary bug repellent at the Disney World theme parks and Disney Springs to help combat the Zika Virus presence in central Florida. On Sunday, Disney rolled out the program resort wide. Here’s how it works…

Mosquito Prevention Kiosk in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom

Mosquito Prevention Kiosk in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom

These kiosks are located all around the parks and Disney Springs. Cast members are handing pamphlets out to guests about mosquito prevention and then invite them to apply repellent to themselves. On Sunday, cast were tallying the number of guests using the program. By mid-afternoon, one kiosk at Disney Springs informed us that they already had over 50 guests who had taken advantage of the program.

Guests do not actually receive anything to keep with them, but they can stop at these kiosks and apply the repellent to themselves. All resort rooms at Walt Disney World have similar bottles of repellent placed in them by housekeeping. Guests do in fact get to keep these bottles distributed to their guest room.

It is unknown for how long Walt Disney World will offer the repellent, but it will likely be until the threat of Zika is gone from the Central Florida area.

BREAKING: Disney World to Distribute Free Insect Repellent to Fight Zika Virus

On the heels of the announcement that the pool at River Country will be filled in, Disney has now announced that will start handing out insect repellent at their resort starting Sunday.

From the Orlando Sentinel:

Walt Disney World will start giving out free insect repellent throughout its resort Sunday, as the threat of Zika comes increasingly close to Orlando.

Disney confirmed it will have various types of insect repellent at its theme parks, at Disney Springs and the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex. There will also be aerosol cans in hotel rooms.

Signs will be posted letting people know the repellent is available.

“In an abundance of caution, we are accelerating preventative efforts throughout our property, including providing complimentary insect repellent to our Guests along with helpful guidelines from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention,” Disney said in an emailed statement. ”We have an extensive mosquito-prevention and monitoring program in place, and we continue to work closely with local, state and federal experts on this topic.”
