PHOTOS, VIDEO: Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights Comes to An Emotional End After 20 Years

Last night, the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights finally faded away after an incredible 67-night-long final season. The lights were originally supposed to end on Sunday, January 3rd, but were extended 3 more nights to accommodate the thousands of guests and off-duty cast members who wanted to say goodbye.

IMG_7831

The lights turned on around 5:50PM, this was the scene just ten minutes before that. All of the Streets of America were packed with guests who wanted to see the lights turn on one last time. Around this time, the Hollywood Studios parking lot was forced to close and the area surrounding the lights was pretty much gridlocked and stayed this way for quite some time.

IMG_7836

The actual end time for the lights was unclear based on the previous two nights, but the lights ran until 10PM. By 8:45PM, the crowd began to calm down and what was left was a sizable crowd of die-hard fans who would remain until the lights were turned off. To close out the Walt Disney World holiday tradition, the new dancing light song for this season performed last, followed by a few heartfelt words from Donnie and Annie on WJBO Radio, the fictional radio station that provided some commentary between music over the last 10 years of the event. When they were done, the lights danced to the Mickey Mouse Club sign-off, and slowly, section by section, the Spectacle of Dancing Lights faded away forever:

IMG_7848

A darkened New York Street signified the end of a defining piece of the history of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Not only are we saying goodbye to the Spectacle of Dancing Lights, but also the Hollywood Studios we have known for almost 27 years. The Backlot Tour, the Magic of Disney Animation, the Streets of America, the Premier Theater, and the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights are all gone. It seemed as if we had talked about a makeover of Disney’s Hollywood Studios for well over a decade and now we are at the start of what may be the largest undertaking in over three decades for Walt Disney World.

A 14-acre land filled with Star Wars, new shopping, dining, and attractions from the world of Toy Story, and much more await, but first we had say goodbye to so many attractions that we have enjoyed for over 20 years. While Star Wars land and all of the other great projects for the park will surely amaze, it is sad to see so much that we love vanish, but probably no lost Studios offering hurts as much as the lights. The good news is it seems this will be our last loss before construction begins on those new additions, however, the holidays at Walt Disney World may never be quite the same again. Maybe we will see the Spectacle of Lights once more someday, but for now, and possibly forever, we say goodbye to one of the most awe-inspiring and memorable offerings in the history of the Disney theme parks: the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Is Now The Highest Grossing U.S. Movie Of All Time

starwars

After only 20 days, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has become the highest grossing domestic film of all time. We do not have the official numbers, but as of Tuesday, “The Force Awakens” brought in $8 million bringing its Domestic Total to $758.2 million. “Avatar’s” domestic gross is $760 million and early estimates show that “The Force Awakens” will pass that amount today (Wednesday).

The below chart is provided by Box Office Mojo. It does not reflect Wednesday’s numbers but should give you an idea where “The Force Awakens” stands in the top ten and after Wednesday’s numbers are tallied, it should have an estimated domestic gross of over $760 million.

DOMESTIC GROSSES

1 Avatar Fox $760,507,625 2009^

For those interested in the World Wide Highest Grossing Movies Of All Time, the below chart provided by Box Office Mojo will give you some idea. “The Force Awakens” still has not opened in China but it will this Friday. China provided and additional $204 million to “Avatar’s” gross, so we can expect “The Force Awakens” to either match or exceed that amount. Again these numbers do not reflect Wednesday’s final numbers.

Do you think “The Force Awakens” will top “Avatar” worldwide?

Closed Disneyland Attractions Offering New Experiences During Star Wars Land Construction in 2016

When January 11th brings the close of the Disneyland Railroad, the Mark Twain Riverboat, Sailing Ship Columbia and the Jungle Cruise (the first three related to Star Wars-themed land construction), the attractions will begin to operate in a new form as limited-time-only special experiences.

epr091738LARGE

The Main Street and New Orleans Square Train Stations will allow guests to get up-close with the historic steam engines that have circled Disneyland park for decades, learn about these amazing machines firsthand from train engineers and take a picture with an engine. Each engine will be accompanied by knowledgeable train engineers, who will share facts, details on how the engines operate, stories from the history of the Disneyland Railroad and more.

While the world-famous Jungle Cruise undergoes refurbishment early this year, the skippers will still share their stories, adventures and humor with Disneyland park guests in front of the attraction. They will recount tales from their travels while the Jungle Navigation Company headquarters readies for reopening later in 2016.

New, limited-time experiences aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat and Sailing Ship Columbia will be offered later in the year, so even though these attractions won’t be running per usual, guests will get the chance to see them in an entirely new way.

REVIEW: Star Wars Fireworks Dessert Party Awakens at Hollywood Studios, But Is The Force $69 Strong?

Last night, I attended the very first “Symphony in the Stars: A Galactic Spectacular Dessert Party at Disney’s Hollywood Studios”, which might be the longest named special event in Disney history. Regardless, the event is very much in the same vein as the FROZEN fireworks dessert party that has been offered in the past, but now themed to Star Wars to match the remastered Symphony in the Stars fireworks show that debuted back on December 18th.

The party is $69.00 for adults and $39.00 for children ages 3-9 and advance reservations are highly recommended. The event is hosted nightly from January 5th through March 19th, 2016.

IMG_7755

Check-in starts sometime before 7PM (we checked in at around 6:20PM) and the party actually opened a little before 7PM to those already checked in.

IMG_7760

Once entering, we were greeted with the Freeze-fried Nutella Truffle station, which is how I prefer to be greeted anywhere I go. This was really fantastic. The addition of the choice of raspberry or chocolate sauce was a nice touch and I felt like this was unique and a good fit for the theme of the party.

IMG_7765

IMG_7794

Alcoholic beverages are included with the price, probably why adults cost $69.00 per ticket. Of the 4 drinks, I tried 3: The Force, the First Order Finale, and the Corellian Smuggler’s Coffee.

IMG_7770

The First Order Finale was my personal favorite, but I’m also a big fan of coconut rum. It wasn’t too sweet and had just the right amount of alcohol in it for my taste.

IMG_7791

I hate to use this, but it’s very true… “The Force is Strong with This One.” The Force was easily the strongest drink I’ve ever had in a Disney theme park. It wasn’t bad, but you could smell this thing from the forest moon of Endor (which is in a galaxy far, far away for those who don’t understand Star Wars).

IMG_7795

The coffee was nothing out of this world, but on a cold night it was everything I could I have wanted. It had just the right mix of alcohol and coffee and if I didn’t need to review other “specialty” drinks that aren;t just coffee and Bailey’s, I would have probably just had 4 of these.

IMG_7786

IMG_7785

For those adverse to alcohol (and for younger padawans), there are specialty non-alcoholic drinks as well, Padawan Punch Blood Orange Lemonade and Ewok Juice Green Apple Lemonade. Water, coffee, and soft drinks are also readily available.

IMG_7796

The desserts were spectacular. If you’re a fan of the larger Star Wars cupcakes in the park, you’ll find mini-versions of the BB-8 and Darth Vader cupcakes here and you can have your fill of them. There is also a bite-size portion of the Blue Milk Panna Cotta. You’ll find a smattering of unique desserts not offered in the parks as well.

IMG_7797

IMG_7787

Darth Maul eclairs anyone?

IMG_7790

I have a weakness for crispy rice treats myself…

IMG_7780

My personal favorite was the Galactic Size Warm Space Debris Bread Pudding, which is as big as it’s name. This was really great, tasty bread pudding with a galaxy of special toppings such as M&M’s, chocolate chips, pretzel sticks, and some things I couldn’t even identify in the wreckage. You could even get a big scoop of ice cream to go with it at the next station.

IMG_7779

The ubiquitous generic Disney ice cream snacks are also here in case you have a rebellious picky-eater in your group. Although, sometimes in life you just need a Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar, right?

IMG_7775

I was most surprised to see some items I would not classify as desserts among the available spreads, including scorched pesto crisps and the smoked sea-salted “quarter ration” biscuit. The soggy crisps weren’t great, but I probably could have eaten an entire tray of the biscuits which were soft and had a great flavor.

IMG_7774

IMG_7776

There were also fruit-sabers for those who enjoy a healthier option.

With the food and drinks out of the way, let’s talk about the viewing area. It’s located on the left side of what is now called “Center Stage” in the hub of the park. This is not a bad viewing area by any means… as long as you are not behind trees.

IMG_7744

Honestly, our spot was the best one I’ve had for fireworks in the park, though typically I stand far enough back that my video camera can pick up the full view of all of the launch points, so I don’t necessarily always try to stand this close to the show. I can’t imagine the people a few table in towards the tree had as good a view as we did though. My main problem with this is that there are just too many tables in a rather confined space. I don’t think the event is overcrowded, the the amount of tables and the layout doesn’t function. You could see every guest toward the rope line having a really hard time getting to the food and drinks on the opposite side, just because the tables (which now had people around them) were so close together. Not having to fight through people to get to the tables and bars would have improved my experience. Maybe sell 5-10 less tickets and pull 3-4 tables out to make aisles?

My biggest issue, and this might be kind of silly, but it’s the tablecloths. Not only are these the icy blue cloths they used for the FROZEN dessert parties, but they are too long. With the tables pushed so close together and the table cloths dragging on the floor, I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I either almost tripped on a table cloth or saw someone almost pull everything off of a table. Please Disney, use the profits of the first few parties to buy Star Wars themed tablecloths that are actually the proper length. Maybe get the Star Wars centerpieces from last year’s Rebel Hangar lounge and spruce up the tabletops a little too…

IMG_7792

In the end though, we had a great view of what is a really phenomenal fireworks show (and one that will be getting better in the coming months, but that’s  a story for another post).

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrdJrOOExqU?rel=0&showinfo=0]

As a parting gift, guests were given a souvenir Chewbacca stein as they exited (the same ones you can buy around the park for $8, but a nice gesture).

So, was it worth $69.00? Maybe. I’m definitely on the fence about this one. I’m a pretty hardcore Star Wars fan, so it’s hard for me to not have a good time surrounded by Star Wars-themed desserts and fireworks. During the busier weeks like President’s Day or Spring Break, I definitely see the value here. A reserved fireworks spot with a nice, clear view and not having to fight crowds is really great. If you will have 3-4 alcoholic beverages and eat plenty of the snacks, you will probably find your value here. If it was priced at $49.00, I would say it was a no-brainer, but $69.00  a person is a lot of money for 1 hour of unlimited food and drinks. I definitely don’t see a $39.00 value for children though. Again, I don’t think I can clearly define if it is worth the price I paid, but I think the crowd will be split between those who enjoyed it and those who felt it wasn’t worth the price point. If you have Star Wars fans in your group, they’re going to have a good time, but otherwise, there are probably better ways to eat and drink for $69.00 a person at Walt Disney World on a night where the park isn’t crowded anyway. If seeing these fireworks the right way is a priority to th you and you’re coming during a busy week, book this. If not, it’s just going to depend how strongly The Force is calling to you.

New Poster & Extended Trailer Released For Disney’s “The Jungle Book”

jungle_book_ver2

Disney has just released a brand new poster for their upcoming live action version of “The Jungle Book” showcasing King Louie.

A new extended trailer has also made it’s way online. Not too many new scenes though:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yt7jEI83_FI

Directed by Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”), based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, “The Jungle Book” is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and the free-spirited bear Baloo (voice of Bill Murray). Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johansson), a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie (voice of Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire. The all-star cast also includes Lupita Nyong’o as the voice of the fiercely protective mother wolf Raksha, and Giancarlo Esposito as the voice of wolf pack’s alpha male Akela. “The Jungle Book” seamlessly blends live-action with photorealistic CGI animals and environments, using up-to-the-minute technology and storytelling techniques to immerse audiences in an enchanting and lush world. The wild adventure swings into theaters in 3D on April 15, 2016.

BREAKING: Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights Extended Until Wednesday

The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights (now in its final seasons as prep work begins for the Star Wars themed land at Hollywood Studios) was scheduled to end its run tonight, however, Walt Disney World has now extended the run, and park hours, though Wednesday, January 6th, 2016.

Osborne-Spectacle-of-Dancing-Lights2

Disney’s Hollywood Studios will now be open until 10PM the next three days, with the lights running from dusk until 9PM. The Symphony in the Stars fireworks will be presented an hour later at 10PM, park close time.

The extension is likely to subdue the large crowd expected this evening, however, it does negate the farewell meal packages that were sold to guests for this weekend which no longer mark the absolute end of the 20 year run of the Spectacle.

EDITORIAL: George Lucas Versus “The White Slavers” (AKA Disney)

627360d910Capture

While recently on The Charlie Rose Show, George Lucas took time to continue his public war with Disney calling them white slavers in regards to how they have handled his franchise.

George Lucas: These are my kids.

Charlie Rose: All those Star Wars films.

George Lucas: All the Star Wars films.

Charlie Rose: They were your kids?

George Lucas: Well, they are. I loved them, I created them. I’m very intimately involved in them. And, obviously, to sell them off—

Charlie Rose: And you sold them.

George Lucas: I sold them off to the the white slavers who take these things and…[laughs]

geaorge-lucas-mickey-mouse

In the last few months, Lucas has had no problems slamming Disney and The Force Awakens. Any good relationship that they had after the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney is gone.

Lucas has said a lot of nasty things about Disney and his relationship recently comparing their relationship to a breakup:

George Lucas: “When you break up with somebody, the first rule is no phone calls. The second rule, you don’t go over to their house and drive by to see what they’re doing. The third one is you don’t show up at their coffee shop and say you are going to burn it . . . You just say, Nope, gone, history, I’m moving forward.”

The other thing with a breakup that George doesn’t get is you don’t keep talking about it either. If anything it shows that he is still hurt and he is having more problems with the breakup then the other party.

george-lucas-star-wars

The problem with George Lucas is he is acting like a spoiled little brat. I had respect for Lucas in the past and have held off from saying exactly how I feel about him in regards to his public blasting of Disney but to call Disney a bunch of “white slavers” is wrong and very irresponsible on his part.

Hey George, if you consider the Star Wars films your children, not only would you never have sold them to “white slavers”, you would have never sold them period. How can he expect people to feel any pity for him knowing that he got 4 billion dollars? Did he need the money? Nope. To be honest, he did donate a large percentage of his proceeds to charity. I just think he is getting carried away trying to make Disney look like the bad guy and that he was the poor innocent victim.

george-lucas-assina-contrato-em-que-passa-a-empresa-lucasfilms-para-a-disney-ao-lado-de-robert-iger-ceo-da-disney-em-burbank-na-california-301012-1351637255536_615x470

The main reason Disney purchased Star Wars was to make money. At the end of the day, Disney is a business and a businesses’ ultimate goal is to make as much money as possible. Are they going overboard marketing and merchandising Star Wars? I’d say so, but again they are in the business to make money. But I also think they are going out of their way to make sure that no harm comes to The Star Wars Franchise that George created. So many people love Star Wars and they are hiring the best people and consultants to make sure they don’t screw things up.

jarjar

The problem really started when Lucas decided to bring back more Star Wars film in the form of The Prequels. In the past when he worked on The Original Trilogy, he had help from people working with him about the story and what was told what seemed to work and what didn’t. The Prequels may have been a financial success but for the most part they were blasted as inferior movies.

The public began to lose faith in George as a good storyteller and movie maker. I can somewhat understand how he feels because he created Star Wars. Lucas must have felt very hurt that something that wouldn’t have existed without him, was better off without him in the eyes of the public. There are many Prequel haters out there, myself included. There are some good scenes in The Prequels, but very few and very far, far between. The writing is horrible, the films were boring, the acting was terrible, the CGI was more distracting than good and it was all due to George Lucas being a control freak and not wanting any help with the movies.

Lucas’ problem is he just doesn’t understand why people don’t like them. I could sit down with him for 5 minutes (although I could probably spend several hours) and explain to him why people don’t like them.

It was one thing to ruin The Prequels but did he really have to go back and continually mess with The Original Trilogy by making changes that offended fans of The Original Trilogy? The one scene that give most fans a conniption fit is Lucas changing the scene in A New Hope where Han shot Greedo first. Lucas’ mentality was that he was concerned that by Han shooting first it would tarnish his good guy image. He even went as far to say that Greedo always shot first in The Original Trilogy but the camera angle captured it wrong. No one bought that.

My problem lies in Return Of The Jedi in which he changed the Force Ghost of Anakin Skywalker from original actor, Sebastian Shaw, to Prequel actor, Hayden Christensen. I’m OK if others love The Prequels. Let them enjoy them and more power to them, but I don’t like The Prequels and don’t need to be reminded that they exist, if I don’t want to, especially while watching The Original Trilogy.

Many fans complained that they did not like the changes Lucas made and that they wanted the unaltered version of The Original Trilogy back. Lucas’ answer to the fans was that while making The Special Editions, he used the original negatives and basically destroyed parts of The Original Trilogy that he took out. Basically saying, you have to like my new versions because that’s the version I like. The Original Trilogy gave it’s life so that The Special Editions could live.

Getting back to The Force Awakens, Lucas had not seen the movie until a week or two before the release. Disney and Kathleen Kennedy had been asking Lucas to view it for some time to get his opinion of their work. Before the film’s release, Steven Spielberg had seen the movie three times but Lucas had difficulty finding time to see it just once? For Lucas to go out of his way to avoid seeing it was just showing that he was pissed off that Disney and Lucasfilm did not rely on him for input while the film was being made. And knowing Lucas, I am sure he wanted Disney to use “all” of his ideas. My personal opinion is that The Force Awakens may not be a perfect movie, but it is a great Star Wars film and it’s the “Gone With The Wind” of Star Wars films if you put it against any of The Prequel films.

The person I feel bad for is Kathleen Kennedy, who Lucas hand chose to succeed him as head of Lucasfilm. She is stuck right in the middle. Kennedy has been long term friends with Lucas but also works for Disney. I am sure she understands why Disney did not want Lucas’ treatment to be part of the film because, like most people, she understands why people did not like The Prequels. Let’s not forget what he also did to Indiana Jones with his treatment for the last movie. Because George wasn’t willing to say it himself, Kennedy was asked whether Lucas finally saw the film and she gave the diplomatic answer saying that George saw the film and he liked it. But then a few days later George was asked to elaborate on what he liked about the film and he said:

George Lucas: “I think the fans are going to love it. It’s very much the kind of movie they’ve been looking for.”

That’s basically saying, I didn’t like it, but fans, who are not as at my level of thinking, will.

George has been on record saying that his ideas for Episode VII would be totally different:

George Lucas: “The issue was, ultimately, they looked at the stories and they said, “We want to make something for the fans.” So, I said all I wanted to do was tell a story about what happened. It’s called space opera, but people don’t actually realize it’s actually a soap opera and it’s all about family problems—it’s not about spaceships. So they decided they didn’t want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing so I decided, fine…. I’ll go my way and I let them go their way.”

Sorry George, but with your track record I’d rather spend my money on a movie that I am going to enjoy, even if it similar to previous Star Wars movies, then to spend money on something that is completely new but not enjoyable at all to watch.

While I was writing this article, Lucas came out and said that he didn’t mean to call Disney white slavers.

George Lucas: “I want to clarify my interview on the Charlie Rose Show. It was for the Kennedy Center Honors and conducted prior to the premiere of the film. I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy and for that I apologize.”

“I have been working with Disney for 40 years and chose them as the custodians of Star Wars because of my great respect for the company and Bob Iger’s leadership. Disney is doing an incredible job of taking care of and expanding the franchise. I rarely go out with statements to clarify my feelings but I feel it is important to make it clear that I am thrilled that Disney has the franchise and is moving it in such exciting directions in film, television and the parks. Most of all I’m blown away with the record breaking blockbuster success of the new movie and am very proud of (J.J. Abrams) and (Kathleen Kennedy).”

It sounds to me that George thinks he can use a Jedi mind trick and hope that we forgot all of the things he said in the past about Disney and The Force Awakens. Well, he did apologize, but he seriously needs to just let it go. Still not sure if his comments are sincere or just damage control. Only time will tell and I hope he has learned a lesson and starts to work with Disney and Lucasfilm instead of against them. Hopefully he will personally apologize to Bob Iger and maybe they can work in bringing Lucas back as a consultant.

It’s a new year, George. Do your best to let go of your hate because you know what that leads to if you don’t.
