REVIEW: Star Wars – Secrets of the Empire VR Experience at Disney Springs is a Must-See!

Star Wars – Secrets of the Empire opened today at Disney Springs at Walt Disney World, and we of course were there as early as possible to check it out.

BREAKING: "Star Wars - Secrets of the Empire" VR Attractions Coming to Disney World, Disneyland Later This Year

In case you aren’t familiar with what this experience is, here’s a recap of what we knew going in:

Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire transports guests deep into the Star Wars universe, walking freely and untethered throughout the multisensory experience with friends and family. In groups of four, teams go undercover as stormtroopers to capture Imperial intelligence vital to the budding rebellion’s survival.

In basic, non-PR language, this is a very advanced virtual realty (VR) experience with characters from Rogue One present.

 width=

How was it? In short, amazing. I legitimately experienced that “wow” moment that I had felt visiting some of the most impressive theme park attractions my first time, all throughout the 13 minutes we spent running around this virtual playground. Secrets of the Empire is a reason to visit Disney Springs if you don’t already have one, especially if you are a Star wars fans. Even if you aren’t the biggest Star Wars nerd, the technology and experience is still enough of a novelty that I think just about anyone could have a good time with it. If you didn’t believe VR was the wave of the future before seeing this, you will after.

I have done other VR experiences over the last few years, and this was better in every way. The helmet and the vest were far more comfortable than any other I have ever worn (even over eyeglasses), everything worked fairly well, and the experience was seamless.

 width=

After a short preview and set-up following check in, guests are equipped with the VR equipment they will need to wear. The vest and helmet (seen above) weigh somewhere between 10-15 pounds, which could be a lot of some guests with physical restrictions, but most guests will be able to comfortable get through the 13 minutes of the VR portion of the experience without much discomfort. Guests who have done other VR experiences and have been made a little nauseous by those stated that Secrets of the Empire left them with no weird feeling afterwards.

 width=

Participants must be 10 years or older and over 48 inches in height to participate. Wheelchair access is available via transfer, and all guests sign a liability waiver as you might have guessed. Photography, videography, and recording of any kind is not allowed inside of the attraction, as you might have guessed since you are strapped to a bunch of VR equipment and wearing a headset. From check-in to exit, it should take you around 30 minutes to complete your time inside of Secrets of the Empire. In order to go through, guests will have to leave some belongings that could be in the way of the experience behind.

Guests are sent through in groups of four, so if you have more than 4 people in your party, you will be broken up, and as you might guess, you will be paired with other guests if you don’t have a full party size. Some may find this challenging as getting through the experience does require a lot of communication between teammates carrying out the mission.

The set-up inside the experience is so that every wall and item you see with the headset on (that is within reach) is really there for you to reach out and touch. Even the droids in the room with you are physically there. This makes the experience feel as real as possible, unlike VR experiences you can have in your own home. The graphics inside the game are stunning, making it feel like you are actually living a Star Wars movie thanks to the work of ILM, and the presence of actual actors from Rogue One makes the experience all the more authentic. Much like Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge promises, you are living your own Star Wars adventure here, with real consequences based on choices you make while playing through the many scenes of Secrets of the Empire.

All of this is complemented by fantastic elemental effects, such as changes in temperature, smells, air blasts, rumbling floors, and more. I hate to use the Disney-PR buzz word, but it is truly immersive. If you love to smell Rome burning in Spaceship Earth at Epcot, you’re going to love a lot of the stuff they have going on in here.

Oh, and you get to pick up blasters and shoot stormtroopers, so who wouldn’t love that? You’ll feel the gun recoil and do other things as well as you go through different portions of the story. It’s fairly cool and will allow many a fan to live out some childhood dreams of being a Rebel hero. Now we just need a chance to play the bad guys…

The story guests are thrown into is fun and easy to understand, and even has a payoff for the more hardcore of Star Wars fans towards the end. It is tremendous fan service, but accessible for everyone. There’s also a reason to come back and do this again since, as we stated above, different actions have different consequences and cause different events to take place in the attraction.

Again, I can not stress how enjoyable our experience was, from myself as a Star Wars fan, to others in my party who I would claim are more casual fans, everyone had a fantastic time and was simply blow away by the technology at play here. Get tickets now to make sure you get to see this the next time you are at Disney Springs.

 width=

Star Wars – Secrets of the Empire is now open at Disney Springs, located just behind the Once Upon A Toy store, next door to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique in the Marketplace section. Tickets are $30 per person and appointments are available in 15 minute intervals (and highly recommended since this is sold out for the next few weeks already. You can find ticket information and more on Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire now at www.thevoid.com.

The experience will also open in Downtown Disney at the Disneyland Resort on January 5, 2018.

PHOTOS: Disney Reveals PIXAR Pier Model for Disney California Adventure, First Look at New Counter Service Establishments

Coming summer 2018, Pixar Pier will transform the southern shore of Paradise Bay at Disney California Adventure park with whimsical neighborhoods filled with characters from Pixar stories. Today, Disney is sharing a first look at this transformation through photos of a working model now in use at Walt Disney Imagineering.

 width=

Featuring newly themed attractions, foods and merchandise, this area will introduce new neighborhoods representing beloved Pixar stories. The neighborhood inspired by “The Incredibles” will be anchored by the Incredicoaster, which will feature a new mid-century-modern-style loading area inspired by the Parr family home as seen in the upcoming “Incredibles 2.” In the artwork behind the model above, we get an early glimpse at a Toy Story themed attraction with Jessie serving as the marquee, a fast food stand themed to the chicken restaurant from the Toy Story Toons series, Bing Bong inside of his new candy store, and an additional fast food stand (which we couldn’t figure out).

 width=

Another of the neighborhoods will be a celebration of many of your favorite Pixar stories. In this neighborhood, each of the 24 gondolas on what is now Mickey’s Fun Wheel will feature different pairs of Pixar pals, and at the Games of the Boardwalk, all of the midway games will be inspired by characters from films such as “a bug’s life,” “WALL·E” and the Pixar short “La Luna.”

Pixar Pier will open summer 2018, during the first-ever Pixar Fest celebration, which begins April 13.

BREAKING: Walt Disney Company To Acquire Twenty-First Century Fox; AVATAR, Simpsons, X-Men & More Join Disney Family

The Walt Disney Company and Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc. (21st Century Fox) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement for Disney to acquire 21st Century Fox, including the Twentieth Century Fox Film and Television studios, along with cable and international TV businesses, for approximately $52.4 billion in stock (subject to adjustment). Building on Disney’s commitment to deliver the highest quality branded entertainment, the acquisition of these complementary assets would allow Disney to create more appealing content, build more direct relationships with consumers around the world and deliver a more compelling entertainment experience to consumers wherever and however they choose. Immediately prior to the acquisition, 21st Century Fox will separate the Fox Broadcasting network and stations, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, FS1, FS2 and Big Ten Network into a newly listed company that will be spun off to its shareholders.

 width=

Under the terms of the agreement, shareholders of 21st Century Fox will receive 0.2745 Disney shares for each 21st Century Fox share they hold (subject to adjustment for certain tax liabilities as described below). The exchange ratio was set based on a 30-day volume weighted average price of Disney stock. Disney will also assume approximately $13.7 billion of net debt of 21st Century Fox. The acquisition price implies a total equity value of approximately $52.4 billion and a total transaction value of approximately $66.1 billion (in each case based on the stated exchange ratio assuming no adjustment) for the business to be acquired by Disney, which includes consolidated assets along with a number of equity investments.

Popular Entertainment Properties to Join Disney Family

Combining with Disney are 21st Century Fox’s critically acclaimed film production businesses, including Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures and Fox 2000, which together offer diverse and compelling storytelling businesses and are the homes of Avatar, X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool, as well as The Grand Budapest Hotel, Hidden Figures, Gone Girl, The Shape of Water and The Martian—and its storied television creative units, Twentieth Century Fox Television, FX Productions and Fox21, which have brought The Americans, This Is Us, Modern Family, The Simpsons and so many more hit TV series to viewers across the globe. Disney will also acquire FX Networks, National Geographic Partners, Fox Sports Regional Networks, Fox Networks Group International, Star India and Fox’s interests in Hulu, Sky plc, Tata Sky and Endemol Shine Group.

 width=

“The acquisition of this stellar collection of businesses from 21st Century Fox reflects the increasing consumer demand for a rich diversity of entertainment experiences that are more compelling, accessible and convenient than ever before,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “We’re honored and grateful that Rupert Murdoch has entrusted us with the future of businesses he spent a lifetime building, and we’re excited about this extraordinary opportunity to significantly increase our portfolio of well-loved franchises and branded content to greatly enhance our growing direct-to-consumer offerings. The deal will also substantially expand our international reach, allowing us to offer world-class storytelling and innovative distribution platforms to more consumers in key markets around the world.”

“We are extremely proud of all that we have built at 21st Century Fox, and I firmly believe that this combination with Disney will unlock even more value for shareholders as the new Disney continues to set the pace in what is an exciting and dynamic industry,” said Rupert Murdoch, Executive Chairman of 21st Century Fox. “Furthermore, I’m convinced that this combination, under Bob Iger’s leadership, will be one of the greatest companies in the world. I’m grateful and encouraged that Bob has agreed to stay on, and is committed to succeeding with a combined team that is second to none.”

At the request of both 21st Century Fox and the Disney Board of Directors, Mr. Iger has agreed to continue as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company through the end of calendar year 2021.

“When considering this strategic acquisition, it was important to the Board that Bob remain as Chairman and CEO through 2021 to provide the vision and proven leadership required to successfully complete and integrate such a massive, complex undertaking,” said Orin C. Smith, Lead Independent Director of the Disney Board. “We share the belief of our counterparts at 21st Century Fox that extending his tenure is in the best interests of our company and our shareholders, and will be critical to Disney’s ability to effectively drive long-term value from this extraordinary acquisition.”

Benefits to Consumers

The acquisition will enable Disney to accelerate its use of innovative technologies, including its BAMTECH platform, to create more ways for its storytellers to entertain and connect directly with audiences while providing more choices for how they consume content. The complementary offerings of each company enhance Disney’s development of films, television programming and related products to provide consumers with a more enjoyable and immersive entertainment experience.

Bringing on board 21st Century Fox’s entertainment content and capabilities, along with its broad international footprint and a world-class team of managers and storytellers, will allow Disney to further its efforts to provide a more compelling entertainment experience through its direct-to-consumer (DTC) offerings. This transaction will enable Disney’s recently announced Disney and ESPN-branded DTC offerings, as well as Hulu, to create more appealing and engaging experiences, delivering content, entertainment and sports to consumers around the world wherever and however they want to enjoy it.

The agreement also provides Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool with the Marvel family under one roof and create richer, more complex worlds of inter-related characters and stories that audiences have shown they love. The addition of Avatar to its family of films also promises expanded opportunities for consumers to watch and experience storytelling within these extraordinary fantasy worlds. Already, guests at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort can experience the magic of Pandora—The World of Avatar, a new land inspired by the Fox film franchise that opened earlier this year. And through the incredible storytelling of National Geographic—whose mission is to explore and protect our planet and inspire new generations through education initiatives and resources—Disney will be able to offer more ways than ever before to bring kids and families the world and all that is in it.

Enhancing Disney’s Worldwide Offerings

Adding 21st Century Fox’s premier international properties enhances Disney’s position as a truly global entertainment company with authentic local production and consumer services across high-growth regions, including a richer array of local, national and global sporting events that ESPN can make available to fans around the world. The transaction boosts Disney’s international revenue mix and exposure.

Disney’s international reach would greatly expand through the addition of Sky, which serves nearly 23 million households in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Italy; Fox Networks International, with more than 350 channels in 170 countries; and Star India, which operates 69 channels reaching 720 million viewers a month across India and more than 100 other countries.

Prior to the close of the transaction, it is anticipated that 21st Century Fox will seek to complete its planned acquisition of the 61% of Sky it doesn’t already own. Sky is one of Europe’s most successful pay television and creative enterprises with innovative and high-quality direct-to-consumer platforms, resonant brands and a strong and respected leadership team. 21st Century Fox remains fully committed to completing the current Sky offer and anticipates that, subject to the necessary regulatory consents, the transaction will close by June 30, 2018. Assuming 21st Century Fox completes its acquisition of Sky prior to closing of the transaction, The Walt Disney Company would assume full ownership of Sky, including the assumption of its outstanding debt, upon closing.

Transaction Highlights

The acquisition is expected to yield at least $2 billion in cost savings from efficiencies realized through the combination of businesses, and to be accretive to earnings before the impact of purchase accounting for the second fiscal year after the close of the transaction.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Take in the Splendor of Pandora - The World of AVATAR at Night (and During a Thunderstorm)

Terms of the transaction call for Disney to issue approximately 515 million new shares to 21st Century Fox shareholders, representing approximately a 25% stake in Disney on a pro forma basis. The per share consideration is subject to adjustment for certain tax liabilities arising from the spinoff and other transactions related to the acquisition. The initial exchange ratio of 0.2745 Disney shares for each 21st Century Fox share was set based on an estimate of such tax liabilities to be covered by an $8.5 billion cash dividend to 21st Century Fox from the company to be spun off. The exchange ratio will be adjusted immediately prior to closing of the acquisition based on an updated estimate of such tax liabilities. Such adjustment could increase or decrease the exchange ratio, depending upon whether the final estimate is lower or higher, respectively, than the initial estimate. However, if the final estimate of the tax liabilities is lower than the initial estimate, the first $2 billion of that adjustment will instead be made by net reduction in the amount of the cash dividend to 21st Century Fox from the company to be spun off. The amount of such tax liabilities will depend upon several factors, including tax rates in effect at the time of closing as well as the value of the company to be spun off.

The Boards of Directors of Disney and 21st Century Fox have approved the transaction, which is subject to shareholder approval by 21st Century Fox and Disney shareholders, clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, a number of other non-United States merger and other regulatory reviews, and other customary closing conditions.

REVIEW: “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is a Shocking Entry in the Saga

 width=

When The Force Awakens first came out, there were complaints from some that the film was more of a remake of A New Hope instead of something totally new and original. A new Jedi is found on a desert planet, a new masked villain emerges, and a new Death Star like panet is destroying planets that are loyal to The Republic. Even though I saw some similarities with A New Hope, I always felt that The Force Awakens stood on its own as a wonderful film in the Star Wars Saga. There were many fans that felt disenchanted with the release of The Prequels and Lucasfilm and Disney had to find a way to bring those fans back. They did so by reintroducing some familiar themes and characters that we all loved. To me The Force Awakens was more of a homage to A New Hope and it was a very welcome return of Star Wars to our world.

 width=

Is The Last Jedi a remake of The Empire Strikes Back? Well, again, there are some similarities. A Jedi is trained by an old reluctant Jedi Master. There is a battle that includes AT-AT Imperial Walkers, that looks like it takes place on a snow covered planet, although this time it takes place on a mineral planet, and it’s salt, not snow. The heroes are being perused by the villains in space, and I will be honest, there is a big scene that is very similar to what we had seen in Return Of The Jedi. Good news though, there is no Death Star this time.

 width=

Regardless of the similarities of any previous Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi is a fantastic movie and only time will tell if it becomes another classic like The Empire Strikes Back. Director Rian Johnson really introduces bold new concepts and storylines into the Star War Saga and in no way does he play it safe. The last act contains so many shocking revelations, it will take a while for it to fully sink in. Trust me, you will be both shocked and surprised during this film and, in my opinion, that is the best kind of film.

 width=

The film takes place right after The Force Awakens. When Rey (Daisy Ridley) finds Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), things don’t go the way she had hoped. Although The First Order received a major blow with the destruction of Starkiller Base, they are even more driven to destroy the Resistance. In a subplot, Finn (John Boyega) and his new alley Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) are on a secret mission to help the Resistance escape from the constant pursuit of The First Order. Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) is also struggling with the repercussions of his actions and also the decisions made by some of the high ranking officers of The Resistance. Those are the main story-lines that jump back and forth with each other, eventually leading to the final battle on the planet Crait between the Resistance and The First Order. There is one other confrontation that I will leave for spoilers.

 width=

I absolutely loved the film for taking such risks that most fans never expected we would ever see, especially with Disney now owning the Star Wars franchise. I am still amazed that Disney signed off on some of the things that happened in this movie. Star Wars fans will be talking about these events for years to come. I have seen it twice and I can not wait until I see it again and probably will still be shocked at some scenes.

 width=

The Last Jedi is not perfect. I felt we could have done without Finn and Rose’s adventure on Canto Bight. To me, that part felt dangerously close to prequel territory. The planet looked nice and the Fathiers creatures were definitely cool looking, but I felt that whole part took us away from the action. If you need to take a bathroom break or refill your popcorn bucket, this is the time to go.

I love John Boyega as Finn and just felt his talents were wasted sending him on a basically useless mission that had no payoff. People’s biggest worry was the Porgs and whether they were going to be the new Ewoks. I’m glad to say that they actually add some comic relief to the movie, but in a good way. Surprisingly there was a lot of humor in the movie, but some jokes did not hit the mark for me. The last third of the movie definitely makes up for any (minor) issues, although I wish it would have ended 5 minutes sooner. Hopefully you will agree with me when you see the ending I am talking about.

 width=

Rian Johnson really delivers with this movie. His direction style is very different from what J.J. Abrams did in The Force Awakens and it is definitely appreciated. Without a doubt, Johnson was the right choice for directing this movie. The acting is just as good, if not better, as the first film. Without a doubt, the standouts in this movie were Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill and Adam Driver. And Carrie Fisher really does such a great job as General Leia and she will surely be missed. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed the character of Vice Admiral Holdo played by Laura Dern. The cinematography is absolutely beautiful and the imagery perfectly blends practical effects with CGI. The musical score by John Williams hints at the past and pulls in musical cues from both The Prequels and The Original Trilogy. Not Williams’ best but far from his worst, if there is such a thing.

SPOILERS!!!:

 width=

The absolute most shocking thing for me is that Kylo Ren fooled us all. Well, he fooled me. In all of the footage that we had seen prior to the film, there was just a few scenes with Kylo Ren. One scene had him contemplating killing his mother, which most of us believed he would never do (and he didn’t). We also saw him reach his hand out to Rey in a sign of friendship. I personally thought that he realized the errors of his ways and was going to team up with Rey to defeat Snoke. And he did that, but his plan the whole time was to team up with Rey so that they could take down Snoke together and he would be the new leader of The First Order. He simply used Rey the whole time. I did not see that coming at all! Not only that, but he kind of kills Luke by draining him of his Force power!

After The Force Awakens, I always felt that Kylo Ren would redeem himself in this movie. He may have killed his father Han Solo, but he probably had deep regrets for doing it and there was just no way he could kill his mother. Now that Kylo Ren killed both Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, there is absolutely no chance of redemption for him in Episode IX. Even Leia has given up on him at the end, and I am totally OK with that because he is a such great villain. He is right up there with Darth Vader in my book.

Luke being a bit of a hermit/beatnik was kind of an odd choice. It’s just hard to imagine Luke giving up The Force and The Jedi way because he made a mistake, especially when his friends needed him. I’m sure it was not only a letdown to Rey but many fans of the franchise. But Luke did try to kill Ben Solo when he was under his care and that was another shocking revelation. Although I think they wimped out on that by having Luke say, he quickly changed his mind.

Leia being able to use The Force to save herself in the vacuum of space was a bit of a surprise and hinted that she may be much more powerful than we originally thought. I would not be surprised if the original idea was to have Leia confront her son in Episode IX, but after the passing of Carrie Fisher, we will never know. Luke’s use of his Force projection to be in two places at once is a new power of The Force we had never seen before. Will Luke return as a Force Ghost in Episode IX or was his Force Ghost destroyed? We don’t know. I am just blown away by most of these events and never saw them coming at all.

End Of SPOILERS

 width=

Is The Last Jedi the best Star Wars movie ever made? For me, that title still goes to The Empire Strikes Back, but damn, this movie does not pull any punches and I absolutely love that! I think that time will only be good to this movie and this will continue to get better upon repeat viewings. The Last Jedi is at times shocking, and goes places that you would never imagine. Just when you think you know what is going on, the movie takes a sharp left turn.

Go and see this movie and expect to not only be entertained, but also to be utterly astonished by some of the events that occur in this movie. Expect the unexpected!

I give Star Wars: The Last Jedi a 8.5/10!

BREAKING: Stitch’s Great Escape Will Close Forever Next Month

Having been on a seasonal operating schedule for quite a while now, Stitch’s Great Escape at the Magic Kingdom will be open again December 23, 2017 through January 6th, 2018. However, it will never open again following that.

 width=

Disney is expected to make the announcement shortly, but the final day of operation for the Tomorrowland attraction will be January 6th, 2018. The closure will make way for a new, yet-to-be-announced attraction.

Stitch’s Great Escape replaced the ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter in 2004, becoming one of the most poorly received attractions in the park’s history.

New Details Revealed for Terralina Crafted Italian, Coming to Disney Springs in Early 2018

Terralina Crafted Italian will be the name of the new restaurant coming to Disney Springs early next year to replace Portobello.

 width=

Terralina will be owned and operated by the Levy Restaurant Group, the same company that owns and operates Paddlefish.

 width=

According to the Disney Parks Blog, the restaurant is expected to transport guests to “la dolce vita,” (the sweet life) essence of the spectacular Lake District of Northern Italy.

Alison Weber, Chief Creative Officer for Levy, gave details of the backstory. “The story here is of a first-generation Italian family, from the Lake District, who built a home in Disney Springs, expanding it over the years to welcome more friends and neighbors to enjoy their hospitality, and, of course, food! At Terralina Crafted Italian, every detail supports the philosophy that ‘life is meant to be savored through the simplest of pleasures.’ The table is even set that way … ready for good conversations, storytelling and moments to be enjoyed.”

The building will feature an open rotunda that welcomes guests with a rustic stone fireplace, a new outdoor patio with a veranda bar that spills out into the Disney Springs promenade, and a two-story glass conservatory that showcases stunning views of Lake Buena Vista. The restaurant will have a wood-burning oven and open display kitchen.

James Beard-Award Winning Chef Tony Mantuano will lead menu development. We’ll bring you more menu details as we get them!

REVIEW: Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe Holiday Offerings, The Magic Kingdom

For the 2017 holiday season, many Magic Kingdom restaurants are offering some special holiday fare, so we decided to check out the rather interesting offerings at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe in Tomorrowland…

 width=

The Bah Humburger ($13.99)

 width=

Char-grilled Angus Cheeseburger topped with Turkey and Cornbread Stuffing and our Signature Cranberry Scrooge Sauce on a Brioche Bun, served with French Fries or Green Beans.

 width=

If these toppings were placed on a burger that wasn’t served at a Magic Kingdom counter service restaurant, I think it would be quite good, but the problem here is where it was made. This is a good idea, and the turkey, cornbread stuffing, and cranberry sauce (which is thankfully not very bold and just adds a hint of cranberry flavor) were all enjoyable, but the hamburger underneath had no taste whatsoever.

Fa la la Fondant Fries ($4.29)

 width=

Dusted with Cinnamon Sugar and drizzled with a Holiday Colored Fondant.

 width=

These sounded weird and gross, so I immediately knew that I had to review them. Let’s be honest, you clicked this review to see what was going on with these french fries. So… these aren’t bad. It’s surprising how well icing and cinnamon sugar goes with fries (although fries historically go well with sweets). The one thing I will say is eat them while they are as hot as possible, because once the fries cool down, the flavor loses a lot of its charm and you start to realize that YOU ARE EATING COLD FRENCH FRIES WITH ICING ON THEM.
