RUMOR: Disney Infinity Getting New Achievements/Trophies

Earlier on XboxAchievements.com, new achievements were posted for Disney Infinity 3.0. There are five new Achievements each for both the Marvel Battlegrounds Play Set and the Finding Dory Play Set. Though these Achievements did not show up in the recent final update, it is possible that they could be added in once the Finding Dory Play Set releases on June 17th.

Normally when Achievements or Trophies leak like this, it is the result of developers unlocking them during testing. This does not necessarily guarantee that these unlockables will be added to the game, but it does nearly confirm the existence of them.

These are the Achievements/Trophies for the Marvel Battlegrounds Play Set.

Finding Dory: Just Keep Swimming Now on Mobile

Basic RGB

Disney Interactive has just released Finding Dory: Just Keep Swimming, a new mobile game available now for $3.99 on iOS, Android, and Windows 10.

Throughout the game’s 13 levels, players guide Dory across the map through mazes while journeying through the story of Finding Dory. Currently, only the first 11 levels are available. The final two levels will be released after the film hits theaters. Dory and Marlin tell the narrative together and along the way players encounter characters such as Nemo, Hank, Bailey, and Destiny.

Before each level, Dory asks the player to select two items from a handful of options, these items appear later in the levels to fill in the gaps of the story. This adds a Mad Libs-esqu element to the game that makes the story more fun for the younger audience that the game is clearly intended for.

The game is also coming to Apple TV and the Amazon Appstore later this month.

img_1390153616_221

In what is surely to be shocking to many, Disney has announced that it is cancelling Disney Infinity.

Disney reported it’s quarterly earnings today and in the report Disney announced that it is cancelling it’s Disney Infinity game line which will result in a $147 million charge. Going forward, Disney will liscense it’s characters to to third party gaming production companies.

From CNBC:

The company added that “lower results” for Infinity contributed to operating income in its consumer products and interactive media segment falling 8 percent year over year to $357 million.

From John Blackburn, Senior Vice President and GM of Disney Interactive:

By now you may have heard the news that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue production of Disney Infinity. From the beginning, Disney Infinity was built for you—our fans—and I wanted to take a moment to thank you not just for your support over the years, but for creating a community that made Disney Infinity more than just a game.

Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that. We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it.

So what’s next for Disney Infinity? We have two final retail releases coming, including three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass later this month, and the Finding Dory Play Set launching in June.

And as we turn to the next chapter in our story, I want to thank everyone who helped bring Disney Infinity to life, particularly Disney’s Glendale-based production and publishing teams, our external development partners, and of course the incredible Avalanche team for their tireless dedication to this project.

But most of all, I want to again thank you for making Disney Infinity a part of your lives—and for adding to the Disney legacy by being a part of this community.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 Arriving Next Year

featuredImage.img

EA has confirmed that a Star Wars Battlefront sequel is currently in the works and is set to release next year. The new game is said to have “bigger and better worlds” thanks to having “the new movies to work off of.” This is exciting news seeing as the first entry only contained worlds from the original trilogy as well as one DLC level from The Force Awakens. With Rogue One releasing this year and Episode VIII coming in 2017, Battlefront 2 should have plenty of new and exciting settings for players to visit.

A sequel comes as no surprise after EA announced that Star Wars Battlefront has already shipped over 14 million copies. EA now has plans for three Star Wars games, with this Battlefront sequel coming next year, while Respawn Entertainment and Visceral Games work on two additional Star Wars titles.

EDITORIAL: What is the The Future of Disney Video Games

mobile_GX_banner-infinity3

It has now been a few days since Disney announced the cancellation of Disney Infinity, the closure of Avalanche Software, and that Disney is pulling out of video game publishing. This made no sense at first seeing as Disney was just bragging a few months ago about how Disney Infinity was the best selling Toys-to-Life game on the market. Upon first discovering this news, I was devastated. After all, Disney Infinity has grown to be truly one of the most creative and unique games with a deeply passionate community. Though the more I thought about it, the more it made sense.

Activision’s Skylanders has been on the decline for the past few years and with last year’s inclusion of LEGO Dimensions, the market has begun to get both crowded and fatigued. Even though Disney has been out-performing the competition, they have not necessarily been making a fortune. Sure, Disney Infinity has been making money and is no doubt a success, but the perhaps Disney saw the writing on the wall. After all, it is better to get out while you still can.

Though the news is sad, this is not the end of seeing Disney owned properties in video games. Disney has stated that moving forward, their plan is to license out Disney properties to other publishers. This is similar to Disney’s current deal that EA that allows them licensing to create Star Wars games. Various publishers will now theoretically be able to get the rights to any Disney property. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities for Disney related video games.

We now live in a world where video games based off of licensed properties can be just as good as original IPs (e.g. the Batman Arkham series). Theoretically, Ubisoft could now make the greatest Avengers game the world has ever seen. This realization of new possibilities is exciting and perhaps it is the true silver lining in all of this. After all, Disney does not necessarily have the best track record for making good Disney games, but other companies do. Some of the most beloved Disney related games of all time include Duck Tales, Aladdin, and Kingdom Hearts, all of which were not created by Disney. Without Disney limiting their properties to just themselves, other developers can get their hands on Disney IPs and create more fantastic games.

Of course, the future is currently shaky. Disney Infinity still has a few months of content left before it is officially over and until something new is announced, we will still only have the cancellation of Disney Infinity to dwell on.

Disney Movies VR Lets You Explore Disney Worlds in Virtual Reality

ss_83ad505bd94a0bd5bd25bedbe3979d89e1b7c2d7.600x338

Disney Interactive has just launched Disney Movies VR for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. Available for free on Steam, the app allows users to explore the worlds of recent Disney films like never before.

Currently, the app offers players access to explore a hub world featuring “parks” from Star Wars, Avengers, and The Jungle Book. These experiences differ from one movie to another. For example, The Jungle Book includes 3D interactive scenes from the movie, while the Captain America: Civil War experience is a 360-degree virtual theater showing footage from the red carpet premier of the film.

Clearly, the app is not intended to be Disney Interactive’s next big venture, but it is a nice tech demo that showcases the potential of VR. Perhaps Disney has plans to do more with VR in the near future!

FIRST LOOK: Finding Dory Disney Infinity Playset Photos

A listing on Amazon UK has provided further details about the upcoming Finding Dory Play Set for Disney Infinity 3.0. We already knew that this would be the final playset released for Disney Infinity, as it was announced last week along with the news that the game was coming to an end (see here).

Interestingly, it looks like the playset will only feature one character in the box, much like the Marvel Battlegrounds Play Set. Avalanche has confirmed that Nemo will be available as well so it seems that he will be sold as a stand alone figure. Though no price point was provided on the listing, it is safe to assume that the play set will be priced at $30 like the Marvel Battlegrounds Play Set, rather than the $35 price point use for two-figure play sets.

First Look At “Star Wars Rebels” Characters For Disney Infinity 3.0

6

The announcement of  “Star Wars” coming to Disney Infinity 3.0 made many Star Wars fans very happy. We have seen characters announced from both “The Original Trilogy” and “The Prequels” but it turns out that the Disney Infinity Team wasn’t quite done.  Now the newest group of Star Wars characters to join Disney Infinity 3.0 is from the hit Disney XD series, “Star Wars Rebels.”

From StarWars.com

Star Wars Rebels was decided really early on,” Lucasfilm’s brand creative director Hez Chorba tells StarWars.com. “It’s an important part of the saga and our entire team is proud of the stories being told in the series. That’s when we got to, ‘We need these characters.’” The Star Wars Rebels characters that are making the jump to Disney Infinity action-figure form include Jedi-with-a-secret-past Kanan, Jedi-to-be Ezra, hot-headed alien Zeb, and explosives expert/graffiti artist Sabine. There’s more to adapting them to this line of toys, however, than one might think. A lot more.

The addition of Star Wars Rebels to Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition — and the care taken with that addition — illustrates just how important the series and its characters are to the Star Wars universe. In the game and in figure form, Sabine, Zeb, Ezra, and Kanan stand proudly with the galaxy’s most popular icons. “I’m super excited that we’re doing Rebels justice, the right way,” Chorba says. “We’re only expanding on something already great.” This is not the last stop in a galaxy far, far away for Disney Infinity, though. Quite the opposite.

“The cool thing is,” Bunker says, “there’s a lot coming down the road. I just want to ride the wave.”
