Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic, swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow in the all-new “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.” The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea—notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has ever faced.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” also stars Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs, Golshifteh Farahani as the sea-witch Shansa, Stephen Graham as Scrum, David Wenham as Scarfield and Geoffrey Rush as Captain Hector Barbossa.

Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg are directing “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” with Jerry Bruckheimer producing. The executive producers are Mike Stenson, Chad Oman, Joe Caracciolo, Jr. and Brigham Taylor. Jeff Nathanson wrote the screenplay. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” drops anchor in U.S. theaters on May 26, 2017.

An Update on the Home Video War Between Disney And Amazon

 width=

Last month we reported that something strange was going on with Disney and Amazon.com. None of Disney’s recent Blu-ray’s titles were available for preorder at Amazon.com, but all of those titles were listed at sites such as Target.com, Wal-Mart.com and BestBuy.com. If you wanted to purchase Blu-rays for Doctor Strange, Moana or Rogue One from Amazon, you would either receive a message that the title was unavailable for preorder, or on the day of the title’s release, there would be a message stating that the title is temporarily out of stock and the estimated shipping date was 2-3 months.

There still is no official word from either Disney or Amazon as to what has been going on, but our sources are telling us that Amazon is the culprit. Apparently Amazon wants a bigger slice of the revenue from the sale of Disney’s Blu-rays. Meanwhile other sites are content with the deal that they have with Disney. Disney is not budging knowing that they can just sell their Blu-rays at other retailers and that could be why we are seeing more exclusive editions of current Disney blockbusters on Blu-ray. Disney doesn’t have much to lose by holding out. It’s not like people that want the Blu-rays are going to chose not to get the movies. Consumers do have options with other retailers and they can also just go the Digital HD route if they chose. So Disney is not going to lose money by having Amazon not carry their product. And unfortunately, Amazon is not going to go out of business anytime soon by not making preorders available on their site for Disney Blu-rays.

The people that seem to be losing are the consumers, and I would say more specifically Amazon Prime members who are Disney fans. An Amazon Prime member is paying and annual fee of $99 for this service. Granted, it provides you with a ton of benefits like free 2 day shipping or better, free release date shipping, a video streaming service, music streaming, photo storage, 20% off video game preorders and so on, But currently if you want Amazon to ship you a Disney Blu-ray on the day it is released, it aint going to happen. You can purchase the movie digitally and also on DVD through Amazon, just not on Blu-ray.

Here is an update on the status of current Disney Blu-ray titles that have been affected:

 width=

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – Temporarily out of stock.

Moana – Temporarily out of stock.

Doctor Strange – Temporarily out of stock. But Amazon has it on sale this week for $17.99! LOL

There is no problem with purchasing older titles, like Zootopia or Finding Dory, through Amazon. These titles, and many other Disney titles, are in stock at Amazon. This problem has to do with preorders and sales of fairly newer Disney titles and it appears to have started with the releases of the Doctor Strange Blu-ray back in February.

Hopefully both sides will come to agreement, but as for now it appears that both Disney and Amazon feel they really dont need each other for the immediate future. We will keep you posted.

Disney Fans Upset With Changes Made To The Live Action “Mulan” Movie; No Songs, No Li Shang

 width=

Say it isn’t so! The director of the upcoming live action “Mulan” movie says there will be no songs from the original Disney animated film. Not only that, but he cut the role of Captain Li Shang, Mulan’s love interest, in his version of the film.

 width=

The following casting call shows a new character will be replacing Li Shang:

 width=

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgWiMm_Nffc

Director Niki Caro also revealed the following while speaking to MovieFone:

Moviefone: So I was talking to Sean Bailey and he was telling me about your approach to “Mulan.” It sounds great!

Niki Caro: What did he say?

He said that it’s going to be very muscular and a Ridley Scott approach. But I wanted to hear from you what your approach is going to be.

Well I’m not going to contradict Sean. His sensibility and mine for the material is right in sync. It’s a big, girly martial arts epic. It will be extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving.

That sounds awesome.

Yeah!

But from what I understand, no songs?

Yes, from what I understand, no songs right now, much to the horror of my children.

I’ve heard that the deleted scene where the Huns sneak in via a Chinese dragon is going to be in this movie. Is that true?

I could not possibly comment upon that.

So there you have it: “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” is out, but all sorts of thrilling awesomeness is in.

Needless to say, Disney fans did not take this well:

 width=  width=  width=  width=  width=  width=  width=  width=

So what do you think? Do you think this is a good idea or not? Will this effect with or not you will see the live action “Mulan”?

You still have time to think about it. “Mulan” still does not have an official release date but filming will start soon and it is set to release sometime in Winter of 2018.

Disney CEO Bob Iger Extends Contract Through 2019

On Thursday, the Walt Disney Company announced the extension of current CEO Bob Iger’s contract to July 2, 2019.  The complex nature of finding a suitable replacement has proven challenging in the years since Mr. Iger first announced his desire to retire.   Since it is a “robust process of identifying a successor and ensuring a smooth transition” the Board of Directors felt keeping the steady approach Mr. Iger has provided would best serve the Company.

 width=

Robert A. Iger

In the release, the Independent of Lead Director of the Disney Board Orin C. Smith highlighted Mr. Iger’s success’s over his first 11 years as CEO.  Among those achievements are the 448% growth in shareholder returns while simultaneously increasing the market capitol of the company from $46 billion to $177 billion.

Mr. Iger expressed his gratitude in saying “leading this Company is a tremendous privilege, and I am honored to have been asked to continue serving as CEO” adding “even with the incredible success the Company has achieved, I am confident that Disney’s best days are still ahead”.

As part of his agreement, Mr. Iger will receive a $5 million dollar bonus for staying on.  In addition to the bonus, Mr. Iger will remain a consultant for the company for 3 years following his retirement.  Back in 2011, Mr. Iger announced his intentions to step down in 2015.  The departures of CFO Jay Rasulo and COO Tom Staggs left no clear successor within the company.  This latest extension marks the 3rd time that Mr. Iger’s contract has been extended since his initial announcement.

With Pandora: World of Avatar set to open this spring and both Toy Story and Star Wars Lands set to open by 2019, it makes sense that Mr. Iger would want to stay on for those openings as the acquisition of both Pixar and Lucasfilm have been huge success under the Iger tenure.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” Gets Three New Theatrical Posters!

With “Spider-Man: Homecoming” opening this July, Marvel and Sony have been working together to start up the marketing push for the picture. It seems like both sides are very happy that Spider-Man is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by showcasing not only Spidey but Avengers Tower in all of these posters.

Is It The End For Chris Evans As “Captain America”? width=

Say it aint so….but it might be so. Chris Evans, who has played Captain America with his first appearance of the character in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”, will fulfill his contractual obligation with Marvel after the filming of “Avengers 4”, which will be filmed back to back with “Avengers: Infinity War”. Evans would like to go on playing the iconic character but in the end, it is all up to Marvel, and so far they havent reached out to him.

The following is from an interview with Chris Evans and Collider:

Are you really going to be done playing Captain America, after the next two Avengers movies?

“It’s really not up to me. My contract is up. I’m not going to sit here and say, “No more.” I think Hugh Jackman has made 47 Wolverine movies, and they somehow keep getting better. It’s a character I love, and it’s a factory that really knows what they’re doing. The system is sound, over there. They make great movies. If they weren’t kicking out quality, I’d have a different opinion. But, everything Marvel does seems to be cinema gold. And like I said, I love the character. The only reason it would end is ‘cause my contract is up. After Avengers 4, my contract is done. Talk to Marvel. If we engage further, I’d be open to it. I love the character. It’s almost like high school. You certainly always look to senior year, and then, all of a sudden, senior year happens and you’re like, “I don’t know if I’m ready to go.” It’s tough thinking about not playing the guy.”

I can never understand why Disney and Marvel had such love for Robert Downey Jr but kind of seems to be leaving Chris Evans out in the cold. Part of it has to do with that Marvel learned from Downey and that after the success of “Iron Man”, they leanred to sign their future actors, like Evans, to long term contracts. But I do believe that Evans deserves his fair share for his contributions to the MCU. It all depends on what happens at the end of “Avengers 4”, which still not official, has to be a continuation to “Avengers: Infinity War”. It is possible that they may finally kill off Captain America and have another character take on the mantle, like Sebastian Stan, who’s character of Bucky in the comics eventually went on to be the new Captain America. Only time will tell.

“Venom” Is The “Spider-Man” Spinoff Movie That Just Wont Die; Official Release Date Is Now October 5th 2018

 width=

Back when Sony was making a mess with the Spider-Man franchise, they wanted to create an MCU style universe all of it’s own based on characters from the “Spider-Man” franchise that would include spinoffs such as “The Sinister Six”, “Venom” and even an “Aunt May” solo film. Luckily, the reboot of Spider-Man into the MCU put a stop to it, but looks like our luck couldn’t hold out forever.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Venom, Columbia’s long-in-the-works Spider-Man spinoff, now has a opening date.

The studio on Thursday announced it has set Oct. 5, 2018, as the release date of that comic book movie. It had previously announced its Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequel, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, as bowing on that date, but then bumped it to Oct. 19, 2018.

Venom has no director yet, but it does have a script; Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, the latter of whom worked on 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, recently turned in a draft. (Dante Harper wrote a previous draft.)

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, among the stewards of the Spider-Man properties, are producing and overseeing the project. Amy Pascal is also producing.

Venom has been one of Marvel’s top villains and a Spider-Man fixture since he was introduced in 1988, created by writer David Michelinie and artists Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck. The character is an alien symbiote that needs a human host to survive. In return, the alien vests its victim with incredible powers. He made his first big-screen appearance in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 and was portrayed by Topher Grace.

The studio hopes to launch a franchise with Venom.

Now I was a huge fan of Venom when he was introduced in the Amazing Spider-Man comic books but you don’t want to make the mistake of introducing the character in a spinoff movie. Learn from DC’s mistake with their movies. Don’t play catchup with the MCU. Build your franchise slowly. Have Venom be introduced as a villain in a “Spider-Man” movie. Completely forget the mess that was done by casting Topher Grace as Eddie Brock and Venom in “Spider-Man 3”. I don’t have high hopes for this “franchise”…oh boy.

Sony Looking At Bringing “Black Cat” And “Silver Sable” Together For Another “Spider-Man” Spinoff Movie width=

Here comes more bad news courtesy of Sony. Looks like Sony is venturing into another spinoff movie using characters from the “Spider-Man” franchise. This time it is Black Cat and Silver Sable in what smells like an answer to DC’s “Gotham City Sirens” movie that has Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Poison Ivy,

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Sony’s Spider-Man universe is getting a little bigger.

The studio, already in deep development on villain offshoot Venom, is now developing a feature project centered on the female characters Silver Sable and the Black Cat.

Chris Yost, who worked on the upcoming Marvel movie Thor: Ragnarok, is writing the script, building on a previous version written by Lisa Joy, the co-creator of HBO’s Westworld.

The studio is hoping to go to directors soon with an eye toward a fall start date. Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are producing the project, which was previously known as the “secret female spinoff project.”

Silver Sable, created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz in 1985, is a mercenary who runs a company that hunts war criminals. The character has been both antagonist and ally to Spider-Man.

Black Cat, an acrobatic cat burglar whose real name is Felicia Hardy, has a long and tangled romantic history with Spider-Man in the comics. The character was cut from scripts for the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, and a “Felicia Hardy” (played by Felicity Jones) briefly appeared in Amazing Spider-Man 2, though no Black Cat connection was ever made explicit.
