Review: Disney’s “Big Hero 6” Delivers Super-Powered Laughs and Heart As Studio Continues New Renaissance

bigherosix06

Taking non-human characters and imbuing them with empathy has been one of the keys to the success of Walt Disney Animation since 1928, and Big Hero 6’s Baymax is another great example. The first official feature crossover collaboration between Marvel and Disney takes what the House of Mouse and the House of Ideas do best and combines them into a warm, funny, heartfelt, and riveting adventure film.

Hiro Hamada is your typical rebellious fourteen year-old, except he’s already graduated high school and is using his robotics genius to hustle the world of underground robot fights. His older brother, Tadashi, decides Hiro needs to focus his genius and introduces Hiro to his lab at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology. Impressed by Tadashi’s classmates Wasabi, Gogo, and Honey Lemon and most of all Tadashi’s experiment, the medical robot Baymax. Hiro of course decides to join the school.

When an accident curtails Hiro’s attempts to join the school, he sets out on a mission to find the mysterious man in a kabuki mask who he thinks caused the accident, but before he can stop this new super-villain, his robot, and his new friends from the school need some upgrades to turn them into superheroes.  That, in a carbon fiber armor shell, is the simplest spoiler free synopsis I can give you.

BIG HERO 6

While the story is both fun and engaging, it is not the strength of the movie. In a way, it is your typical coming of age storyline akin to Spider-Man grasping “with great power,” but in other ways it’s so much more than that. We don’t just watch Hiro struggle as a teenager to define the man he wants to be, we see Baymax develop from a robotic nurse to a full sentient being and it is their relationship growth that drives their maturity and the story.

The movie is also visually stunning in its design. The Japanese-American crossover of San Fransokyo is simply a place I would love to visit. Modern skyscrapers dotted with traditional Japanese imagery and the Golden Gate Bridge topped with torii gates provide a unique and eye-catching background for the action. The armor of the eponymous team reflects a more manga style than Marvel’s traditional heroes wear. Oh, and being a Marvel movie, watch for the excellent Stan Lee cameo.

The biggest weakness of the film is in the development of the secondary characters. The team is rounded out by Gogo, Wasabi, & Honey Lemon, who have technological powers fueled by their own inventions, and Fred is the school’s mascot and science enthusiast. None of them really change at all, aside from the obligatory “we need to be a team” type moment these films inevitably have. I don’t even remember if we get the character’s real names, just the nicknames Fred has given them. However, this is really nit-picking the plot as they are all decent and likable characters from the start. The actors embody the characters enough to keep them realistic.

The comedy of the piece maybe what drives the heart. It ranges from slap stick, to fish-out-of-water, to just plain awkward and beyond. However, it’s not just played for laughs. The laughs fuel the relationship between Baymax and Hiro and allow them to grow together and individually. They work on levels for adults and kids, and in the typical Disney way without having to rely on double entendres .

Filled with exciting and moving set pieces, easy to empathize with characters, beautiful backdrops, and gut busting moments, Disney has another hit on its hands with Big Hero 6. It won’t outperform Frozen, but it’s likely nothing will for a long time. Wreck-It Ralph will be more of an apt comparison, with a similar feel and demographic target.

BIG HERO 6

I have been fortunate enough to see two preview screenings of Big Hero 6, including the first showing to anyone outside the studio at New York Comic Con. The writers directors and actors were in attendance, and it was a unique pleasure to watch the looks on their faces as they rose to a standing ovation from their first audience. I wish them all the success this film can muster, and I encourage all of you to see it in theaters.

“Toy Story 4” To Be Released In 2017 And Directed By John Lasseter

toy story 3 personajes

Walt Disney CEO, Bob Iger, announced today that “Toy Story 4” is in development and will be released in 2017. John Lasseter is to direct the 4th installment of the “Toy Story” franchise. Bob Iger made this announcement to Wall Street analysts while discussing Disney’s 4th quarter results. Very little is known other than that the movie will come out in 2017 and that John Lasseter will direct the movie. John Lasseter directed the very first “Toy Story”, which was also the very first Disney and Pixar co-production. Lassester later went on to direct “Cars” and “Cars 2” and is now the head of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios. It should be very interesting to see John Lasseter go back to the franchise that started his career.

“Big Hero 6”: The Movie Vs. The Comic Book

maxresdefaultss

Before “Big Hero 6” was Disney’s 54th animated movie, it was one of Marvel’s comic book titles. I thought it would be fun and interesting to go over the similarities and differences between the two.

The Team:

splash-bighero6characters-600x375

Movie: When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the midst of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called “Big Hero 6.”

collage2

Comic Book: When the Japanese government needs a team of state-sanctioned superheroes at their disposal, a top-secret consortium of politicians and business entities known as the Giri is formed to recruit and train potential superhuman operatives for the team, which is named Big Hero 6.  The original team consisted of Silver Samurai, Sunfire, Go Go Tomago, Honey Lemon, Hiro Takachiho and Baymax. Later Silver Samurai and Sunfire left the team and Wasabi-No-Ginger and Fred became the replacement members.

Hiro Hamada:

big-hero-6-hiro-1024x662

Movie: Hiro is a young boy who has lost his parents and is raised by his Aunt Cass. Hiro is very intelligent and uses hit talents to win at gambling during back street illegal robot fighting matches. Tadashi, Hiro’s older brother, tries to save Hiro from a life of crime by convincing him that his talents can be better used by helping others and going to college. After his brother’s heroic death, Hiro starts to find clues that lead him to the villain that caused the death of his brother. Aided by Tadashi’s invention, Baymax, and his brother’s colleagues, Hiro puts together the team of Big Hero 6.

imagesghb

Comic Book: At age 13, Hiro Takachihowas was targeted by the Giri, a top-secret consortium of Japanese politicians and business entities that was established to recruit and train potential operatives for a Japanese super-team, Big Hero 6. Silver Samurai(Kenuichio Harada), Big Hero 6’s initial field leader, first approached Hiro’s mother for permission to have him join the team, but she refused due to her desire for her child to live a normal life. Silver Samurai then approached Hiro directly, but the boy was less than impressed with Big Hero 6. However, after his mother was abducted by the Everwraith, the astral embodiment of all those killed in the 1945 nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Hiro was forced to turn to Big Hero 6 for assistance. After joining forces with the team, which also included his idol, the Japanese hero Sunfire, Hiro opted to join the team and has remained a member ever since. In fact, when Silver Samurai and Sunfire left the Big Hero 6, Hiro was appointed to serve as the team’s field leader. In the comic book, Hiro has no older brother and his father is killed. Instead of being raised by his aunt, Hiro is raised by his mother.

Baymax:

big-hero-6-baymax1-1024x662

Movie: Baymax is an inflatable robot created by Hiro’s older brother, Tadashi, to be a medical healthcare companion. After Tadashi’s death, Baymax becomes Hiro’s protector and closest friend. And after some reprogramming that includes a rocket fist, super strength and rocket thrusters that allow him to fly, Baymax becomes one of the most powerful members of Big Hero 6.

collage3

Comic Book: Monster Baymax began his existence as a science project created by Hiro Takachiho. He was originally designed to be a hydro-powered robotic synthformer programmed to serve as Hiro’s personal bodyguard, butler, and chauffeur. However, prior to the project’s completion, Hiro’s father died and the young inventor programmed Baymax’s artificial intelligence using the brain engrains of his recently departed father. With the thoughts and emotions of Hiro’s father, Baymax became much more than a robotic bodyguard. He also functions as Hiro’s best friend and father figure. Baymax is an artificial synthformer capable of synthtransing his body into various forms. His default form is a large humanoid male designed to be less conspicuous in public while attending to Hiro’s daily needs. His other forms “Battle-Dragon” and “Action-Mecha”, are exponentially more powerful.

Go Go Tomago:

big-hero-6-go-go-tomago-1024x662

Movie: Aptly named GoGo Tomago knows what it takes to be fast. She’s tough, athletic and loyal to the bone, but not much of a conversationalist. Popping bubble gum and delivering well-placed sarcasm are totally her speed. The daredevil adrenaline junkie is at her best on wheels, and when GoGo joins forces with Big Hero 6, she rolls like never before, using maglev discs as wheels, shields and throwing weapon.

2890289-go_go_tomago6-everything-you-need-to-know-about-big-hero-6-in-3-minutes-or-less

Comic Book: Raised on the streets, young street urchin Leiko Tanaka fell in with the Shikei-otaku, one of the many youth-based motorcycle gangs involved in Yakuza activities. At age 18, she was arrested during a botched robbery and sentenced to a term of five years in Tochigi Prison. However, before serving her full sentence, engineers from Japan’s Ministry of Defense came to her with a deal: secure an early release from prison in exchange for test piloting an experimental exosuit. Tanaka, who was chosen as a test subject based on her good behavior in prison and her high-speed motorcycling skills, accepted the government’s terms and soon found herself in the “Go-Go Tomago” exosuit, named for the sphere-like shape the armor takes when propelling through the air at high velocities (“tomago” being the Japanese word for “egg”).  Go-Go Tomago was chosen to be a founding member of the Big Hero 6 due to her proficiency with the exosuit and the belief that her fear of being sent back to prison would make it easy for the Giri to control her. Impulsive and hotheaded, Go-Go initially clashed with virtually every member of her new team. She refused to take orders from the team’s initial field leader, Silver Samurai, and was insanely jealous of teammate Honey Lemon. However, once becoming acclimated to the team, her grudging respect for her teammates evolved into true kinship.

Honey Lemon:

big-hero-6-honey-lemon-1024x662

Movie: A cheerful and talented chemical engineering student at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, Honey Lemon lends her skills to help form San Fransokyo’s premier superhero team Big Hero 6. Her knowledge of alchemy proves powerful when the effusive brainiac becomes part of the Big Hero 6 and creates clever concoctions that when thrown, can get her team out of nearly any jam.

tumblr_muequezDRT1rftaf2o4_1280

Comic Book: Aiko Miyazaki was enrolled in the graduate program at the Tokyo University of Science when she was recruited by Japan’s premiere intelligence agency. Miyazaki’s stunning looks and sharp intellect made her a prime candidate for secret agent status, and she was promptly placed on a research and development team consisting of  top physicists, chemists, and mechanical engineers and put to work creating new technology for the government. The team’s most significant invention was a cluster of artificial, miniature wormholes — tiny warps and distortions in the fabric of space-time. At Miyazaki’s suggestion, the wormholes were contained within an innocuous woman’s purse so they could be applied in the field without attracting undue attention. It was soon discovered that the wormholes, in conjunction with Pym Particles (Ant-man) and cutting-edge nanotechnology, served as ideal storage devices in the field — virtually any object, no matter how large, could be stored in Miyazaki’s aptly-named “Power Purse” for later use. Miyazaki was later recruited to join Big Hero 6 and she adopted the codename “Honey Lemon” (inspired by her favorite television program of the same name). As the most caring and compassionate member of the team, Honey Lemon quickly found herself at odds with teammate Go Go, a tough-talking ex-convict who felt that Honey Lemon received special treatment because of her looks and intellect. However, after several heated squabbles, the two eventually learned to appreciate one another and became good friends.

Wasabi:

big-hero-6-wasabi-1024x662

Movie: Wasabi is an intelligent young man and notable student at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, majoring in in applied physics. Wasabi is committed to precision. He’s super smart and just a touch neurotic, but the big and burly neatnik can’t help but join the cause when Hiro needs him most. As part of “Big Hero 6,” Wasabi amplifies his martial arts skills with jaw-dropping plasma blade weaponry.

538565-wasabi4

Comic Book: Wasabi No Ginger is a master chef.  Wasabi, along with Fred, joined big Hero 6 after Silver Samurai and Sunfire left the team.  He is a weapon master, carries two Samurai swords and can also generate knives with his mind out of Qi Energy.  These knives, often shaped as sushi knives,  have the ability to render his foes unconscious.

Fred:

big-hero-6-fred-1024x662

Movie: Fred is the son of a wealthy couple in the city of San Fransokyo, though he rarely spends quality time with either of them, as they’re often away on the family-owned private isles. Fred is also a regular attendant at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, where he works as the school’s mascot, as well as entertains his passion for science. Fred comes off like a laid-back dude with no direction. But this sign-twirling, monster-loving, comic-book aficionado is sure to go place. For example, Fred doesn’t hesitate to join “Big Hero 6,” and he has a lot of ideas for his super-hero skillset, too. His ferocious, fire-breathing alter ego comes complete with claws, integrated communications and a super bounce.

fredzilla

Comic Book: Nicknamed Fredzilla, he can transform himself into a Godzilla-like creature. Fred seems to surround himself in a type of mysterious aura, shaped like a giant purplish-red kaiju, which acts like a massive suit of psionic armor when expanded to it’s full-size. Even when used at less than half it’s full height and stature, the aura seems to enhance some of his abilities such as strength and stamina but to what level and what else it is capable of is unknown.

Absent Members

Silver Samurai and Sunfire:

collage4

Both Silver Samurai and Sunfire were founding members of Big Hero 6. Silver Samurai later became a villain and one of Wolverine’s greatest nemisis’. Sunfire went on to join the X-Men. Both characters are seen in The Wolverine and X-Men movie franchises, which is owned by FOX. This was part of the reason why they were not shown in Disney’s Big Hero 6.

Possible Spoilers of The Teaser Trailer For “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens”

www.epicstream.com

According to Badassdigest.com, the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is completed and it is possible that we may see it even sooner than originally expected. As I have previously mentioned, don’t expect much. People are saying it is a minute long, tops. The representatives from Badassdigest.com say to take all of this with a grain of salt, but the sources for this teaser description have been very reliable in the past. Stay tuned, but it does appear that we will be seeing something within the next 4 or 5 weeks.

Here is the (possible) description of the upcoming teaser trailer:

It’ll be short. And when I say short, I mean one minute long. It’s going to have The Force Theme played on woodwinds, softly, over flashing images of the main leads, each fading to black. There’s no dialogue, just reveals of the characters. And then the music swells up into a full orchestral piece – perhaps what John Williams recorded this weekend? – and we hear a female voice, likely Daisy Ridley’s, saying “Wake up.” And then the title card appears – Star Wars: The Force Awakens – and we see the Millennium Falcon, firing blasters, coming right at the camera.

Also, Anthony Daniels, who has played C3PO in all of the Star Wars movies, recently tweeted this about Star Wars: The Force Awakens:

Twitter-Anthony-Daniels-star-warsI agree with Daniels and have always felt that The Empire Strikes Back was a better movie than A New Hope. I usually go back and forth between Empire and The Godfather Part 2 as to which is the best sequel of all time. To me, those are very encouraging words from Anthony Daniels, especially since he has been in every film. Also, he never said anything like that in regards to the Prequels, but then again Twitter didn’t exist back then. 🙂

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the first chapter of a new trilogy that takes place 30 years after Return Of The Jedi. The movie is being directed by J. J. Abrams and will reunite the original cast as well as new cast members to continue the Star Wars saga. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is scheduled to be released domestically on December 18th, 2015.

12/4/14 Marvel News Mash-Up (Vision, Full-Length Star Wars Trailer with Avengers?, Darth Vader Coming)

First Good Look At “Vision” From “Avengers: Age Of Ultron”

collageewdccwcwec

A picture of a promotional movie poster has leaked online for Avengers: Age Of Ultron and we get out first good look at Vision as one of the new team members. I definitely couldn’t be happier because they made the look of Vision very faithful to the comics. Growing up, Vision was always my favorite member of the Avengers and I’m so glad that he will be in the movie and that he looks great. Also glad to see Captain America finally wearing a good costume and that his ears are finally showing (maybe lose the chin strap or paint it blue).

Here is a photo of Vision concept art that leaked months ago and it matches the movie poster:

First Official Trailer (Not Teaser) For “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” To Appear Before “Avengers: Age Of Ultron”

collagesdfdsfsdfdsf

By now, most people have seen the teaser trailer for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. And as awesome as that teaser was, it didn’t reveal much of the plot. Teasers are just that, they tease us and just give us quick flashes of a movie. A trailer on the other hand is usually 2 minutes or more and gives us some idea of the plot and what to expect from the movie. According to /Film.com, they were informed that the first official trailer for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will be attached to the movie, “Avengers: Age Of Ultron” on May 1st, 2015. Age Of Ultron will be Disney’s second larges film of that year and it makes sense to introduce Disney’s largest film of that year, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. Cross promotion marketing working at it’s best!

“Avengers: Age Of Ultron” Set To Have Stars Return For Re-shoots

avengers-age-of-ultron-costumes1

Even though filming for Avengers: Age Of Ultron completed months ago, some of the stars are being asked back to film some re-shoots in London early next year. According to DailyMail.com, Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Paul Bettany (The Vision), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and Tom Hiddleston (bad-guy Loki) have all been asked to make themselves available over a two-week period in January to film additional scenes at Pinewood Studios. Interesting that Chris Evans (Captain America) is not on the list. Total speculation on my part, but it could mean that maybe they are filming additional scenes to introduce one of these two characters (I can dream, can’t I?):

Preview Art For Marvel’s New Star Wars Series “Darth Vader”

star-wars-darth-vader-1-alex-ross-674x1024The cover above is from my all time favorite artist, Alex Ross. It’ really great to see him doing so many Star Wars covers lately. 🙂

Dark Horse Comics had been publishing Star Wars comic books since the 80’s and they have done an excellent job with the franchise. Many Star Wars fans, myself included, were worried when Marvel got the rights back to the Star Wars comic book franchise that it wouldn’t match the quality of what Dark Horse Comics had done. But looking at this preview, I would say they are on the right track.

Marvel.com recently provided an exclusive preview of the upcoming Darth Vader series.

Ever since Darth Vader made his first on-screen appearance, he became the one of the most popular villains to ever haunt an audience’s dreams! Now, follow Vader straight from the ending of “Star Wars: A New Hope” (and the pages of the new STAR WARS comic book) into his own series, showing the Empire’s war with the Rebel Alliance from the other side! Emily Blunt Talks About Fan Interest In Her Playing “Captain Marvel”

blunt-marvel

Even before the movie Captain Marvel was announced, many comic book fans had their top actress picks to play the character. One actress I thought of, especially after seeing Edge Of Tomorrow, was Emily Blunt. What not to many people know is that Emily Blunt has been courted by Marvel several times to be in a superhero movie. She was the first choice to play Peggy Carter in Captain America and was also the first choice to play Black Widow. Maybe the third time is a charm.

BT84m6i

Recently during an interview with Screen Crush Blunt was asked about playing Captain Marvel:

SC: Are you aware of the Internet buzz surrounding you playing Captain Marvel?

EB: Somebody told me about it this morning! I knew because my brother told me.

SC: People want you to play Captain Marvel.

EB: Which is kind of amazing. What’s she like, though? I don’t know anything about her. What’s it like, this character?

SC: She’s great. She’s witty and strong. That’s why people keep bringing your name up. They don’t want a boring actor. A lot of personality.

EB: Oh, cool.  They call it fan casting?

SC: Yes.

EB: Which is lovely. It’s my favorite kind of casting! I wish it was always like that.

SC: Maybe they can make ‘Captain Marvel’ a musical now that you’ve done ‘Into the Woods.’EB: [Laughs] ‘Captain Musical Marvel.’ Let’s just call Marvel about that right now. We’ll call Kevin Feige about that. “Kevin Feige, we have one hell of an idea.” Yeah.

SC: But in seriousness, it does appeal to you?EB: I think, it’s always for me, it’s always about—and now, more so—what am I putting out there? What would be interesting for me and what would be interesting for people to see. So, if it’s an awesome part, it doesn’t matter if it’s a Marvel movie or a tiny movie, I’d be up for it.

SC: You’d be a hero for every 10-year-old girl out there right now. There’s no Marvel female superhero who has her own movie yet.

EB: Really? That’s huge. How awesome. I love this. No one has actually called me about it, so, we’ll hold our breath. [Laughs] I don’t know if I’ll get the call ever if I pitch it should be a musical.

That’s it for this week!
