Alice 9″ LE Vinylmation

Update: 11/4/11 We have confirmation by Zoe from artist Thomas Scott about the LE 9″ Alice set (thank you commenters below as well). It will be a 9″ Crying Alice, Jr Happy Alice, Jr Drink Me Bottle and Jr Eat Me Cookie. After seeing the the 12 figure 3″ inch set designed by Thomas, this is sure to be a beautiful LE combo. No work on edition size, but Thomas did say to look for it in the Spring of 2012.

Today the vinylmation.com blog posted the box for the Alice in Wonderland LE 9″ combos. One is the Carpenter and the Walrus, which we knew from the Florida Project. The other looks to be an Alice 9″.
There also appear to be three Jr’s in this set, with one of them looking strangely like Alice herself. Is this a 9″/Jr set with 2 extra Jrs? It makes some sense, as Alice grows and shrinks on her way thru Wonderland. I might just love this one!

Walt Disney’s Alice in Wonderland is a 1951 animated classic. Walt was always fascinated with Lewis Carroll’s stories of Alice and used the character in many productions before this. He toyed with the idea of mixing live action and animation but settled on a fully animated feature. The animation in this film is fascinating with a brilliant Wonderland designed by Mary Blair of Small World fame. Filled with many memorable characters, this film is perfect for a set of Vinylmation all to it’s own.

Update: 11/3/11 At the D-Street Orlando Alice release on Friday 11/4, there will be 3 one-of-a-kind 9″ Alice customs available for $1000 each.

By Lana Cook from Chicago, Illinois. Comes with a small pocket watch.
By Julie West from San Fransisco, California
By Jeff Lamm from Ohio

Disney also showed off some packaging details. As with the entire set, the box and tray art was designed by Thomas Scott.

Update: 10/4/11 Disney released a picture of the box art for the set. Check it out.

Update: 10/2/11 Alice release dates announced. 11/4 at D-Street Disney World and 11/5 D-Street Disneyland. On the 5th at Disneyland artist Thomas Scott will also be signing from 10 AM – Noon.

Update: 9/11/11 Thanks to The Florida Project we know the 11 3″ pieces.

Update: 8/29/11 We added some pictures from D23 and now have confirmed that Thomas Scott is the artist of the entire set.

Update: 5/31/11 According to a comment from Kristi, the eBay sale has been pulled. Also, based on various opinions, it seems likely that the piece was stolen or pulled from a trash bin.

Update: 5/30/11 Disney has just gotten back to us about the Alice series. It has not been officially released yet in any part of the world and they are looking into how any of the figures got out and onto eBay. They are currently working on this and other matters to ensure good communication between all the places that carry Vinylmation and smooth out release issues.

Update: 5/30/11 There was a listing for the Green Hedgehog on eBay. It has been listed by a seller in Hong Kong (thank @lindols)We do not know the details of the release, or if it has been officially released. We have contacted Disney and are awaiting a response. We have also learned by the seller’s photo that the Green Hedgehog, therefor maybe the entire set, was designed by Thomas Scott.

Mad Hatter

Voiced by: Ed Wynn

The crazy party guy, played by Johnny Depp in the live-ish action movie. Great top hat. Nick likes the use of Mickey’s ears. There’s a shoeless variant.Remember we already have the Chris Chapman designed 9″ Park 5 Mad Hatter.

Queen of Hearts

Voiced by: Verna Felton

The evil queen who has it out for Alice. Check out her crown (we think it’s glued on like Dumbo’s hat). Great looking piece!

Cheshire Cat

Voiced by: Sterling Holloway

This mysterious cat appears and disappears helping Alice on her journey. Notice that in this lighting the Mickey ears blend into the background creating the effect they are looking for.
Check out the tail on the back!

White Rabbit

Voiced by: Bill Thompson

This poor guy is constantly late. Alice follows him down into Wonderland. On his side is his pocket watch.

Caterpillar

Voiced by: Richard Haydn

The return of the Neck! Great use of this accessory.

Dodo Bird

Voiced by: Bill Thompson

Leads Alice to the Caucus Race. Don’t confuse his beak for a Flamingo.

Oyster

Voiced by: J. Pat O’Malley

These guys are converted to the sides of Carpenter or Walrus. Well, until they find themselves devoured.

Tweedle Dee

Voiced by: J. Pat O’Malley

Great job at capturing this guy as he fits perfectly onto the vinyl. You can even see part of the flag in his ear. But what would Dee be without…

Tweedle Dum

Voiced by: J. Pat O’Malley

March Hare

The March Hare (just like everyone else in Wonderland) is mad. The hare is best friends with the Mad Hatter and enjoys tea just as much as him.

Green Hedgehog

This character played an unwilling croquet ball in one of the Queen of Hearts favorite pastimes.

The Alice in Wonderland series will also have several LE sets.

9″ Walrus and 3″ Carpenter

Voiced by: J. Pat O’Malley
LE 1500
$74.95
November 2011

3″ Cheshire 2 pack

LE 5000
$26.75
November 2011

The future? Only one 9″? Will there be more?

*Note: The following was speculation before we knew more about the set. We can only speculate on the rest of the set as of right now:

Dinah

Alice’s cat. There was a piece on eBay that lead us to think this is a piece in the set. It didn’t show up as part of the normal set. Is this a Combo Topper?
As an obscure choice, the door knob would make a cool chaser.
A possible variant? In the Croquet game, Alice’s hedgehog was red. If there is a green hedgehog, there is a decent bet that we will see a red variant.
Another possible variant. The new mold is supposed to help artists pull off some amazing designs… this is their chance to shine. The Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow Pirates figure looks great. A Johnny Depp as Mad Hatter variant or chaser would be spectacular!

Spotlight On: Custom Vinylmation Artist Are-Jay

On today’s Spotlight we feature the talents of Californian artist, and appearently Dole Whip fan, Are-Jay. And I’m sure after you check out all his customs, you will soon be a fan of his.

Destination Vinylmation: Were you into creating artwork before custom vinylmation?
Are-Jay: Yes! I have been creating art for all my life. I remember going door to door selling my drawings while I was still in elementary school. Comic book art was my passion for such a long time until I began customizing various vinyl figures about 4 years ago. Prior to Vinylmations, I created custom Symbiotes, Mighty Muggs, and Minimates!

DV: I have always enjoyed your work, and i’m glad we can finaly share some with the DV readers. How long have you been creating custom Vinylmation?
Are-Jay: My first Vinylmation custom was completed on 08/19/2009 and was a Classic Batman design.

DV: How many custom Vinylmation have you done?
Are-Jay: I’ve lost count at this point but I’d say somewhere around 175-200.

DV: Wow! How about Disney’s Vinylmation. Do you collect any?
Are-Jay: I do! I used to be a completist for the 3″ figures but due to the flurry of releases each month, and the limited availability of some of them, I’ve cut down and began only collecting my favorites.

DV: Do you have favorite Disney Vinylmation figure?
Are-Jay: My absolute favorite Vinylmation is the 3-eyed Monster from Urban 1, designed by Tyler Dumas. I just love the vibrant colors and randomness of the design. I even created a 9″ tribute piece to match the 3″!

DV: You have just launched your first custom blind box series. This is exciting.
Are-Jay: For my first custom blind box series, I created 15 unique Spiderman customs- including a chaser, and 3 variant designs. They are shipped randomly, which adds to the excitement and captures some of the fun when buying an official Vinylmation blind box!

DV: Why Spiderman?
Are-Jay: Spiderman is such an great character and even though a person may not be into comic books, everyone loves him! I initially wanted to do a mixed series of various Spidey characters but he had so many amazing costumes, I couldn’t choose! I ended up creating the entire series based on his most famous looks which worked out well as everyone who purchased one would get who they wanted- Spiderman!

DV: Which Spiderman costume is your favorite?
Are-Jay: Like mentioned above, its so hard to choose! LOL My current favorite would have to be the Ultimate costume worn by the new Spiderman, Miles Morales. The costume design is incredible and I’m really enjoying reading his series. I’d definitely recommend checking out the book!

DV: Out of your personal custom portfolio, can you pick a favorite?
Are-Jay: While my Batman is a close second, I’d say I am most proud of my Twilight Saga Collection. Each custom features the cover design to each of the 6 books. The book covers are really amazing and they translated so well to the Vinylmation shape. I love that set because the customs have such a unique sophisticated look to them.

DV: You are one of the more experienced custom Vinylmation artists out there. What have you learned from creating your customs that you can pass onto other custom artists?
Are-Jay: I’d the say the most important thing for any artist is just to stay true to yourself and your style!

DV: How can people purchase some Spiderman blind boxes and see the rest of your work?
Are-Jay: You can purchase my Spiderman series by contacting me at arejaydesigns@yahoo.com, through my new facebook fan page: facebook.com/arejaydesigns, and they are also currently listed on ebay. You can view some of my past work at my blog: arejaydesigns.blogspot.com

DV: Thanks for sharing your work with our audience. Don’t be a stranger. Keep us updated on your work.
Are-Jay: Thank you for the opportunity! It’s been wonderful getting to share a little bit about myself and my art. Please feel free to stop by any of my sites and say hello!

ZoMG: Cars 2 at Carsland

In honor of Cars 2 movie release today, I took Mater & Lightning McQueen through California Adventure.
The wanted to see how progress is coming on Cars Land which is scheduled to open in 2012!
First I took them to the Blue Sky cellar to see how plans were coming and what Cars Land is going to look like! They couldn’t be more happy with the result. Looks just like home!
I then took them to see the list of rides. Mater was thrilled that he gets his own ride!
Mater and McQueen then peeked over the construction walls to see how things are coming along.

Lastly we went to see some of the Cars art that they have placed throughout California Adventure on the walls hiding the construction. Mater and McQueen can’t wait to drive back over in 2012 and check out the final product for themselves!

Park Starz Vinylmation Photoshoot

Every time a new set of 12 comes out, I like to take the figures to Walt Disney World and take a few pictures of them around the parks. When Park Starz came out, I was very excited to grab these guys and head out for another photoshoot. I had no idea how many picture opportunities would come up. My friend Austin helped me out and as usual, we looked crazy taking all these pictures, but it was fun. And I couldn’t narrow it down too easily, so I have a lot to share with you. Many of the best are below, but you find a larger photo album at our Facebook page. Enjoy! And let me know your favorites.

Haunted Tease

The Vinylmation Blog posted this artwork today by Casey Jones:

Will this ghostly fisherman be in next year’s Haunted Mansion Vinylmation set? See what we know about this series here.

This figure is designed after the Fisherman that resides in the newly refurbished queue line at the Haunted Mansion at the Magic Kingdom.

Water can be seen pouring from the tomb and the fisherman “sneezes” on guests as they walk by. Water sprouts out of the tomb misting unsuspecting guests.

Urban 8

Warrior
Maria Clapsis

This figure looks like and Indian warrior. He has a great looking head piece and wonderful markings and coloring on the body. The way the feet are painted, it appears he is standing in some brown brush. Will there be a spear accessory?

Rudos
Casey Jones

It appears to be a masked wrestler. He is blue with a squiggle of chest hair. He has a black tank top and tennis shoes. And possible flash bulbs in the ears.

Barricade
Thomas Scott

Directing traffic everywhere. The head is a clear yellow and the ears give the impression of a flashing light.

Beaded
Betsy DePedova

A new artist to the Vinylmation scene. This effort is a colorful figure full of different shapes. Flowers, dots, springs and stars.

Hot Dog
Dan Howard

Looks yummy. Though I prefer just ketchup and relish.
-MC

I like the hidden Mickey disguised as an onion! – Nick

Thomas Scott

This cool, cool cat has a simple black and white stripe shirt a beret and small artist-like eye glasses. He has some chin hair and a pencil mustache. The ears are painted a solid red.

Raccoon
Casey Jones

This little fellow looks happy. Maybe he saw the hotdog. It’s a purple raccoon with a bushy tail… just like the Cheshire cat’s.

Tree Frog
Robert Vann

Watch out! They are poisonous. This one has a great color green and a cool glossy finish.

Cave Painting
Thomas Scott

It looks like a painted you would see inside a cave. Different shapes and colors tell a story the artist wishes to pass down to us.

Yellow Robot
Billy Davis

The Disney Store artists have a robot series all to themselves, but the Disney Design group wanted some of their own. What job do you think this robot was built to perform?

Zombie Break Dancer
Monty Maldovan

Gold tooth, headphones cool blue shades and bling… this blue man is ready to get funky.

This is a great looking piece. If any of the bandaids were mixed media, I’d almost think this was a one-of-a-kind.

Oh, and the boxing gloves, besides being awesome, are removable. When you can, check out his hands underneath.

9″ Saber Tooth Tiger

This figure was named on a placard at The Florida Project, but it was not displayed. It’s sounds pretty cool though. I hope the teeth are 3D.

Not sure if they are real or molded. It has also not yet been determined if these will be a Disney Store exclusive, or available at the resorts as well.
