Club Penguin Island Launches Today

Today Disney has launched their new subscription-based game, Club Penguin Island.

Earlier this week the legacy game shut down for good, and now players can embark on the future of Club Penguin. All the activities one would expect are still around in this new game, including customizing characters, sharing food, playing games, and the list goes on.

Club Penguin is over a decade old, and Club Penguin Island seeks to bring the franchise to a more modern audience that has grown up on mobile devices. The spirit remains the same, but the platform has changed, while the game has also evolved into a 3D experience (goodbye early 2000s flash game artwork).

As with the original Club Penguin, this game is extremely kid-friendly, with tools that are readily available to report negative content, and a strong community of respectable players, although shenanigans are commonplace in the Club Penguin community.

The game can be downloaded now on iOS and Android. You can start for free with a seven-day trail, but afterwards the game will cost $4.99 per month.

VIDEO: Official Trailer for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy – The Telltale Series

As promised earlier this week, Marvel has released the first trailer for the upcoming episodic Telltale Game, Guardians of the Galaxy.

http://https://youtu.be/xrKBKk59bZw

The Guardians of the Galaxy humor is present, while the art style notable takes many cues from the MCU movies. It is important to note, however, that the Telltale series will be completely unrelated to the comics and the movies.

Episode one will release on April 18, which is just a few weeks away! Stay tuned for more news and some reviews as the game starts rolling out.

New Details on Pandora: The World of AVATAR – No Attraction Signage, Wilderness Explorers, Banshee Connect, “AVATAR Me”, No Disney Bags, ETC.

Disney is starting to release more information to the cast members who will be working in Pandora: The World of AVATAR at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, giving us the scoop on some things we didn’t know we would encounter when the area opens on May 27th, 2017.

 width=

Reportedly, there isn’t much in the way of signage for the attractions in the land, as it would impede on the natural environment around the two rides (in story). Na’vi totem poles will be used to convey to guests what the attraction is they are entering the queue for. Whether or not this means there will be wait time signs or not remains to be seen. Also, there will be no Mickey icon readers for MagicBands as it would not make sense on Pandora, so expect custom readers or ACE crew members with iPads I suppose.

The Wilderness Explorers attraction at Animal Kingdom will be tied into the land as well, adding two more pages for guests to obtain while they are on Pandora.

Supposedly, the Na’vi River Journey attraction will feature only one Audio-Animatronic Na’vi creature, the Shaman character we were already introduced to. She will be seated along the riverbank in a crossed leg pattern, but if she were to stand, she would clock in at over 10 feet tall. There will however be additional “AAs” of some of the wildlife on Pandora.

 width=

Windtraders, (pictured here) travelers can find Na’vi cultural items, toys, science kits, and more.

Regarding merchandise, AVATAR products will only be sold in Pandora and not anywhere else in the park. There will also be specific daytime and nighttime merchandise, such as flip flops, staffs, and spears that interact with their surroundings in the land in the evenings. Disney Parks branded bags and receipts will also not exist on Pandora, instead, everything will be branded to Alpha Centauri Expeditions.

The D-Tech “AVATAR Me” station that can be somewhat made out in the store concept art is apparently a real thing, similar to when Disney offered the service where guests could become a Jedi or a Stormtrooper. There is also a “Banshee Connect” service where you will be matched with a tiny plush version of the beast; a robotic creature that you can take home with you for a price.

The stores will include a bead station where guests can make their own bead necklace or bracelet. As well, the Na’vi artifacts that will be for sale will be actual, hand painted props.

We will share more tidbits like this with you as we inch closer to the opening of Pandora: The World of AVATAR on May 27th, 2017.

Beyonce Is The Favorite To Play Nala In Jon Favreru’s Live Action Remake Of The “The Lion King”

 width=

Variety is reporting that Beyonce is director Jon Favreau’s top choice to play Simba’s love interest, Nala,  in the upcoming live action remake of “The Lion King”.

According to Variety:

Sources tell Variety that Beyonce is director Jon Favreau’s top choice to voice Nala in the upcoming remake.

Insiders stress that the Grammy winner has not made a decision regarding the film yet, as the star is pregnant with twins. But since it’s a voice-acting role, sources say the studio and director will do whatever it takes to accommodate her schedule. The songstress announced her pregnancy in early February and dropped out as a Coachella headliner by month’s end. Lady Gaga will replace the “Single Ladies” singer at the desert music and arts festival next month.

This would mark Beyonce’s first film role since lending her voice to the Fox animated film”Epic.” Her other major movie credits include the 2009 thriller “Obsessed,” 2006 movie musical “Dreamgirls,” and 2002 Mike Myers comedy “Austin Powers in Goldmember.”

Walt Disney World Gondola System Foundation Construction About to Begin

We reported back in February about a rumor that Disney is planning to build a gondola system connecting Epcot, Caribbean Beach Resort, Art of Animation/Pop Century Resorts, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Now comes an official “Notice of Commencement” for the construction of “foundation and building infrastructure” at six different locations that correspond with the six locations we mapped out for the gondola’s route.

 width=

The six addresses in “Attachment ‘A'” correspond exactly to the locations on the map from our February post.

 width=

The addresses in the Notice of Commencement are:

  • 251 E. Buena Vista Dr., Bay Lake, FL – this is the turn at the intersection of Buena Vista Dr. and Epcot Resorts Blvd., near the Speedway gas station.
  • 785 Studio Dr., Bay Lake, FL – this is the station located at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
  • 1874 Avenue of the Stars, Bay Lake, FL – this is the station located at the International Gateway entrance to Epcot.
  • 1910 Animation Way, Bay Lake, FL – this is the station at the Hourglass Lake bridge between Disney’s Art of Animation Resort and Disney’s Pop Century Resort.
  • 1051 Sea Breeze Dr., Bay Lake, FL – this is the station at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort.
  • 1074 Sea Breeze Dr., #C, Bay Lake, FL – this is the turn on the property of Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort.

This is the first official filing of a Notice of Commencement, and typically construction begins soon after such a notice is filed.

Previously, Disney filed paperwork with the South Florida Water Management District regarding the Hourglass Lake station because that impacts a body of water under the SFWMD’s purview.

PCL Construction Services Inc. is a large construction firm in the civil and industrial sectors and has done work at Orlando International Airport, Legoland Florida, the Orange County Convention Center, and many other locations in Orlando and around the world.

REVIEW: Trattoria Al Forno Bon Voyage Character Breakfast Brings Tangled & Little Mermaid Couples to the Table

On Sunday, April 2nd, 2017, Trattoria Al Frono at Disney’s Boardwalk began serving a daily character breakfast instead of standard fare that they have had since opening a few years ago. Trattoria is a horrendously bad Italian restaurant for dinner, but featured a surprisingly great breakfast service despite that reputation. Sadly, that menu is now gone, replaced for the “Bon Voyage Breakfast at Trattoria Al Forno”.

The character dining experience costs $34 for adults, $20 for children. Please note: Disney Characters join guests for breakfast only. Character appearances are subject to change. Tables in Wonderland discounts and the Disney Dining Plan are accepted as well.

 width=

Upon check-in, guests are greeted by a pop-up shop of sorts, selling Princess merchandise. This is pretty much a first for a character meal, and does feel a bit cheap. That being said, I get it. Some family will probably impulse buy a dress for a cute picture, and it isn’t the world’s worst idea.

 width=

The interior of Trattoria Al Forno isn’t my favorite, as it is often quite dark and reminds me of Olive Garden, which provides me with marinara sauce PTSD upon sight.

The main event here is characters. Each of the four meet at tables individually and make separate, musical entrances into the restaurant before doing their meet and greet rounds. At various times, small parades with the characters and guests happen through the aisles, marching along to either Tangled of The Little Mermaid tunes. Yes, napkins are twirled in the air.

The characters offered are Ariel, Prince Eric, Rapunzel, and Flynn Rider (or Eugene). Our interactions with them were very nice, despite the fact that we were a table of grown men with large cameras asking to take pictures of the characters by themselves. If we could acquire a decent and lengthy interaction, that certainly you normal people can as well.

Before we get to the food, I want to talk about the atmosphere set by the background music. With adventure as the theme, the Bon Voyage event offers a music loop including songs from the Soarin’ queue, DINOSAUR, the Rocketeer, and more in the realm of inspiring scores. The music achieves the theme nicely, but feels out of place inside the soup, salad, and breadsticks aesthetic. Occasionally, the music changes to songs from the Tangled and Little Mermaid films, as you might expect, but only as and after the characters make their entrances.

Moving on to the meal, breakfast begins with your choice of a mixed berry parfait or fresh fruit salad, but also a frying pan of pastries featuring braided breakfast bread and clam shell pastries.

 width=

The twist was covered in chocolate chips, the clam shells were cherry turnovers, the Sun icon in the center was made of pastry crust, and the muffins were vanilla (despite being rainbow colored) and blueberry in variety.

 width=

The cherry turnover was the favorite of the table for the fresh jelly inside. It wasn’t the thick, gelatinous goo you find in most other Walt Disney World pastries. The chocolate chip twist was also very good, and the other desserts were standard fare, but all delicious.

 width=

As stated above, you also get a choice of fruit plate or yogurt parfait. Both are fine and what you would expect them to be, a nice way to start the meal. Each is topped with a small, decorative sugar cookie.

 width=

The main menu for adults is as follows:

“Shipwreck al Forno”
Calzone with scrambled Eggs, Soppressata, Bacon, Sausage,
Blend of Cheeses and Sunday Gravy

“Golden Frittata”
Prosciutto di Parma, Piquillo Peppers, Green Onion,
Pecorino Romano and Roasted Potatoes

“Tangled Eggs”
Tomato & Basil Scrambled Eggs,
Fresh Mozzarella, Sunday Gravy and Roasted Potatoes

“Two Eggs Poached Under Water”
House-made Fennel sausage, Parmesan, and Sunday Gravy
over Golden Polenta and Toasted Ciabatta

“Tower of Pancakes”
Seasonal Buttermilk Pancakes with Bacon or Sausage

“Royal Breakfast”
Oak-Grilled Steak, Cheesy Egg Torte, Asparagus,
Crispy Onions and Roasted Potatoes

“Swimmers di ‘light’”
Smoked Salmon Egg White Omelet with Spinach, Mushrooms,
Tomatoes, Goat Cheese and Roasted potatoes

Here’s a look at the full menu below, including specialty and alcoholic beverages:

 width=

The Italian Ice Coffee is a holdover from the old breakfast menu which I really enjoy and recommend if you want a sweet, caffeinated start to your morning.

There are four breakfast options for kids as well. While we didn’t have a kids meal, they are either something standard like a Mickey Waffle or egg white omelet, and we will cover the steak and pancakes as adult entrees later in this review.

 width=

Despite still offering a Buzz Lightyear Punch, the glowing clip-on toy that comes with the drink here is Pascal, new to Disney Parks. To my knowledge, it is not available anywhere else. Our waitress was nice enough to just give me one with my meal when I inquired about obtaining one, even though I am almost thirty years old…

 width=

 width=

 width=

Kids (and kids at heart) can also have fun filling out an Adventure Journal that they will find at their table.

 width=

 width=

 width=

The Chinese Theater actually made it in to the artwork, which made me happy.

Alright, lets move on to the entrees…

“Shipwreck al Forno”

 width=

Calzone with scrambled Eggs, Soppressata, Bacon, Sausage, Blend of Cheeses and Sunday Gravy

The dish initially comes out with “King Triton’s Trident” in it, which the server then immediately removes. Apparently a large fork is considered more dangerous than a steak knife which is provided to most ordering food.

 width=

The portion is massive and the flavor is there, but I can’t imagine why this is a breakfast item. Nothing about this screams “what I want to eat at 9am”. I’m not sure Italians eat calzones for breakfast and this Italian American certainly never has. Either way it is good, but you need to be in the mood for a calzone and come very hungry if you are looking to conquer “the beast incarnate”.

“Tower of Pancakes”

 width=

Seasonal Buttermilk Pancakes with Bacon or Sausage

The pancakes are a tall order and they are quite thick. Apparently, the fruit used in the topping will change seasonally, but it was strawberry today. The compote was quite tasty with the pancakes, but otherwise they were the big, dry flapjacks you have come to expect at most Disney World eateries.

 width=

“Royal Breakfast”

 width=

Oak-Grilled Steak, Cheesy Egg Torte, Asparagus, Crispy Onions and Roasted Potatoes

Another large meal, the Royal Breakfast is Trattoria’s take on steak and eggs. The steak was fine, the potatoes and onions tasty, but the real winner was the cheesy egg torte which was delicious.

OVERALL

Trattoria Al Forno, cuisine-wise, falls somewhere in the middle when compared to other breakfast offerings on property. It’s not the best, and its not the worst, but it gets the job done. The pastries were fantastic, the fruit and yogurt parfait are fine, and the entrees are edible. Chances are, you will be coming here for the characters and not the food anyway, so it’s probably nice to know that you can at least digest their food, unlike Chef Mickey’s in most cases. The Bon Voyage Breakfast is a fine option (if you can actually find a reservation for it). While I miss the former breakfast menu, I understand the need for more Princess character dining and this is one of the better ones at least.
