REVIEW: Zootopia Might Just Be The Best Animated Movie in 20 Years

Growing up, my favorite Disney animated movies were always the talking animal films. I grew up loving animals, so movies like Lady and the Tramp, Bambi, and The Jungle Book were the ones I usually gravitated towards. When I heard Disney would finally be making another talking-animal movie, I was overjoyed, but honestly, our fist look at the film back in 2013 was a bit of a let down. Fast forward to the 2015 D23 Expo, and we were given a preview of the film the was genuinely hilarious. That’s when the anticipation started for me. It’s fair to say after all of the clips shown online or at various events, I had seen a good 25 minutes of Zootopia before sitting down to experience the entire film. Every preview or clip I had seen made me more and more excited to finally see the finished product, but what I saw on the big screen far exceeded all of my expectations.

The new renaissance in Disney animation has brought us a lot of movies that I think are absolutely fantastic: Wreck-It Ralph, Tangled, and yes, even Frozen. But I honestly think Zootopia is the overall best film of the current crop, probably the best put together since The Lion King. It’s a radical departure from most of the current Disney lineage in that there are no princesses, there’s no love story, and it isn’t a musical. In a lot of ways, it shares a number of similarities with co-director Rich Moore’s Wreck-It Ralph, but I think the storytelling and animation in this one are just a notch above.

The story takes place in probably the most fleshed-out fantasy world of any Disney film to date. It’s an entire planet where mankind never existed and animals evolved to create great civilizations where they all (somewhat) coexist. The creative team spent months crafting this backdrop for the story, one that proves to be as important of a character as any with a speaking part in the film. The level of detail is what you expect from this studio by this point, but it’s really fun to see them finally get to play with more modern material (iPhones, apps, etc.) in a sprawling world of their own design. The movie is worth watching a few times just to take in signage and different items that populate the backgrounds. The film is also littered with “eater eggs”, some subtle and some that could not be any more in your face.

The characters are magnificent as well. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde make up one of the the greatest duos in animation history. Their pairing provides fantastic comedy, a lot of heartfelt moments, and  they just gel together very well, no doubt a product of the incredible performances from Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman. The pairing reminds me of Bernard and Bianca from The Rescuers, but there’s something about this pairing that works a little better, maybe because we get to see a friendship built rather than just a continuing story of two characters who already knew each other. The supporting cast is phenomenal. Chief Bogo (Idris Elba),  Mayor Lionheart (J.K. Simmons), Assistant Mayor Bellwether (Jenny Slate), and Flash (Raymond S. Persi) are among the more memorable characters, but the film is littered with some really exceptional, albeit short performances.

The movie also makes a pretty strong social commentary you may not see coming, but one that is especially poignant at this time. I could see a lot of parents being very happy about the overall message of the film, and who knows, maybe some adults can learn a thing or two from it as well. In an effort not to spoil the film, I won’t divulge it, but it feels fresh and different (maybe sometimes even edgy)for the realm of animation.

I do have a bit of a bias towards the talking-animal animated classics, but having spoken with a number of people who have seen it, Zootopia is something really special. It’s the funniest Disney animated movie in a long time and it breaks away from the princess stories to deliver something poignant, heartfelt, and fun. The end of the movie leaves me wanting to spend more time in this world, to see what Nick and Judy are going to do next and just explore more of the city and what may exist beyond its borders. I couldn’t possibly more highly recommend you see Zootopia, I think you’ll have a “Wilde” time.

Town Center, Disney Springs’ newest neighborhood, will offer a sophisticated mix of shopping and dining along with a promenade where Guests can relax, refresh and reconnect with each other. Town Center features Spanish “Revival” style architecture, drawing from a rich history of explorers that landed in Florida centuries ago.

Also announced today as coming to Disney Springs are several new dining venues at Town Center overlooking The Spring, the heart and soul of the property.

At D-Luxe Burger, a Disney owned and operated concept, burger aficionados are in for a treat with gourmet burgers made from a signature blend of beef, unique toppings and freshly baked buns. All-natural chicken and vegetarian burgers round out the menu with hand-cut fries and house-made dipping sauces as the perfect complement. Artisanal gelato shakes (non-alcoholic and alcoholic) and floats will also be featured, as well as hard sodas, draft beer and cider.

Celebrating the art of pastry making, Amorette’s Patisserie features elements of an artist’s loft and art gallery side-by-side within the comforts of a small town patisserie. Amorette’s means “little loves,” which is evident in the care poured into creating the shop’s sweet treats. Timeless classic and contemporary pastries are the stars in this unique high-end pastry shop owned and operated by Disney. Custom cakes are truly a work of art and are available for immediate purchase or for pre-order. Champagne selections by the glass and handcrafted hot chocolates only a pastry artist could create allow for a truly indulgent experience.

These venues are in addition to the new restaurants currently being built in Town Center by award-winning celebrity chefs.

The newest contemporary Mexican-themed restaurant joining Disney Springs has a new name. Tablas Frontera will delight friends, family and food-lovers with exciting flavors and a contemporary Mexican experience. Warm colors, an open kitchen and a lively atmosphere frame an inviting exploration of the many delights from the kitchen of renowned chef Rick Bayless. The delicious, enticing presentation of grilled meats, seafood and vegetables served on planks (tablas) promote sharing and togetherness.

Homecoming — Florida Kitchen and Shine Bar by Chef Art Smith will showcase farm-to-fork cuisine inspired by the Sunshine State. The menu will feature Southern favorites like homemade pimento cheese, deviled eggs, low country shrimp and grits, and fried chicken.

ADDITIONAL ENHANCEMENTS

As Guests enter Town Center around The Spring area, they will be warmly greeted at theWelcome Center, a place where Guests can relax and take in the beauty of the clear water with lush landscape along the water’s edge. Themed to early Florida settlements, the architecture around The Spring is based on timber frame structures that were once used in the citrus and ranching industries.

Over in the Marketplace, Fulton’s Crab House will open a new concept this fall. The re-imagined restaurant will welcome Guests with a bow to stern update including interiors reflecting the crisp luxury of modern yachting, and new spaces include a lushly appointed rooftop lounge overlooking Disney Springs, outdoor waterfront bar featuring a “build your own” fish boil and private dining areas. The new menu stars fresh seafood with an oyster shucking bar, Florida stone crab and Alaskan king crab, with hearty steaks and chops, as well as classic and curated cocktails.

In addition, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique will move from its current location at World of Disney into a new and expanded location near Once Upon a Toy in the Disney Springs Marketplace. Guests ages 3-12 will receive the royal treatment, getting made up like their favorite Disney princess with the help of their own Fairy Godmother-in-Training. This country parlor-inspired location will include an expanded salon to welcome royal attendees and a uniquely designed photo room to capture memories.

Budget Cuts Continue at Walt Disney World, Still No Statement from Disney

Despite Disney’s refusal to make comment, heavy budget cuts continue at the domestic parks. In just the last few days, there have been multiple reports of many understaffed positions at the parks, leading to longer lines at restaurants, shops and resort front desks. These reports come after WDWNT.com ran a story about possible labor cuts coming to the U.S. parks dues to the Shanghai Disneyland project being over time and budget, as well as continuing losses at Disneyland Resort Paris.

In addition,  a spokesperson for the Actors’ Equity Association has now come out and stated that 10 of the 29 Streetmosphere performers at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will not have their contracts renewed. Nine of the performers are full-time, while one works part-time. The performers will conclude their run at the park in mid-April.

Upon visiting the Magic Kingdom this weekend, it was also made clear that the Fairy Godmother meet and greet has been cut as well. Some other meet and greets around the resort have also been cut lately, most noticeably Princess Aurora at Epcot. Others are rumored to be cut in the weeks ahead.

Rumors also indicate that TradNation, the new performing group at Epcot is being cut in April, but that could be unrelated to budgetary concerns.

EDITORIAL: Increases, Cuts and The Feeling of Empty Pockets at Disney Parks

Since the announcement in February, many people have spoken up and out either for or against (but mostly against) the cost cutting measures that were announced at both Disney World and Disneyland regarding the over budgeted and delayed Shanghai Disneyland. I for one had held out speaking about this regard, partially to see how this situation played out, but mostly because of initial anger.

When the announcement came, the statement described having to scale back the payroll of cast members both in Florida and California, as well as cancelling the 2nd showings of both Fantasmic and Main Street Electrical. The thought of that brought me back to memories of lining up three hours before a Fantasmic showing, because tourists were always told that the show would fill to capacity. There has been a statement made by the AEA stating that some cast members in acting roles will not have their contracts renewed. This is in addition to the CM’s whose attractions will be closing in April for the demolition of much of the rear of Hollywood Studios.

While this sparked anger from CMs and Disney Park regulars, the proof of such issues is beginning to be evident in terms of what is passed on to the guests. Disney has, as is true every year, raised ticket prices. A one day ticket to Magic Kingdom now costs $105, however Disney has now also tiered the ticket prices. This means that a ticket to the park from the end of May until the end of July will cost $114, but the same ticket in late August will cost $97. Magic Kingdom has magically transformed into a baseball stadium, with ticket prices varying depending on who the home team is playing. They have also surveyed about adding a $15 per night fee for staying in a Disney Resort. Though this has not become reality yet, the fact that they are surveying means they must be toying with the idea. Couple this with the raises in Annual Passes, as well as raising parking fees to $20 per day and testing a Preferred parking fee of $35, (which will probably rarely be used by guests) it appears that the domestic guest is beginning to feel the pressure financially.

Here becomes the issue: why does the domestic Disney guest have to feel the pressure alone? Why has it not been spread around the entire Parks division? And most importantly, how did Shanghai get this out of control in both budgetary and timeline without anyone taking the reins in? I have to believe that the upper management at the Walt Disney Company was aware for quite a while that Shanghai was running late and expensive, because if not, that becomes a very bad sign. Considering reports were coming out last January that the Park was over budget, it seems clear that it was a long reality. The big concern I have is this, look at the following list of things Disney is in the process of beginning, completing, or working on right now. (Forgive me if I miss any)

· Star Wars Land in both CA and FL

· Toy Story Land in HS

· Rivers of Light in AK

· Pandora in AK

· “Frozen Ever After” attraction in EPCOT

· 3rd Soarin’ theater in EPCOT

· 3rd track in Toy Story Mania in HS

· Disney Springs

· Shanghai Resort

· Refurbishments of attractions

Now the list is impressive, and I believe that when completed it will revitalize both coasts (but mostly FL) however it seems as though there are cuts right now, and prices increasing to allow for this to become a reality in the future. The sad truth seems to be that Disney, as well as many other resorts in the area, are pricing much of the middle class out of their parks. The wonder becomes this: are all of the increases and cuts a result of the issues in Shanghai, or is Shanghai being used as the rationale for increases that were already planned? In other words, is it more of a PR move? Could it be possible that Disney is able to absorb the Shanghai problems, but planned to use it as a reason why these cuts and price hikes had to happen? Either way it does not look favorable for the Parks Division, and it will be a hot topic moving forward. Let’s just hope that Imagineering continues its streak of great attractions and theming, because we are learning that they “spare no expense” in new construction.

Daisy Ridley Confirms Recent Clip Of Luke And Rey Is How “Episode VIII” Begins

When I reported a few weeks ago that we had our first clip of “Star Wars” Episode VIII”, I got flack from friends and readers that this was just the same clip that appeared at the end of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. I had seen “The Force Awakens” 6 times, and although similar, I knew this was something we had never seen before. Turns out I was right and that clip was actually our first look at “Episode VIII”.

Daisy Ridely was recently interviewed by MTV News at this year’s Academy Awards and here is what she had to say:

“Me and Mark have been rehearsing a lot, and it’s really amazing,” Ridley told MTV News on the Oscars red carpet Sunday (February 28). “When we went back to Skellig to do the opening of [Episode] VIII, it was so crazy doing the same scene with a different crew of people. He’s amazing to rehearse with, and I’m very excited to be doing the rest of the stuff.”

“It’s such a good story,” Ridley added. “Seriously. Luke is so cool in this one. Really.”

“Big Hero 6” Returns As A TV Series On Disney XD

BIG HERO 6 - "Big Hero 6," an animated television series for kids, tweens and families based on Walt Disney Animation Studios' Academy Award-winning feature film inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, has begun production for a 2017 premiere on Disney XD platforms around the world. The heroes from Disney’s animated feature “Big Hero 6” will be making their return for more superhero adventures! This time the team wont be on the big screen but will be coming back with their own series that will debut on Disney XD in 2017.

Disney’s Oscar-winning film, which is based on the Marvel comics of the same name, is being adapted into an animated series on Disney XD. The show hails from Kim Possible creator Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley, and has started production for a 2017 premiere.

The series picks up immediately following the events in the movie, and continues the adventures of 14-year-old tech genius Hiro and his robot Baymax. Joining the pair on their journey is control freak Wasabi, scientist Honey Lemon, fanboy Fred and no-nonsense Go Go, who together form the Big Hero 6 superhero team. As the new prodigy at San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, Hiro faces daunting academic challenges, not to mention the social trials of being the little man on campus. The stakes are also raised for the high-tech heroes when they must protect their city from an array of scientifically enhanced villains.

“Our colleagues at Walt Disney Animation Studios have created a brilliant new world, inspired by Marvel, with vivid, unique characters,” Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to further develop these characters into a world class animated series — full of fun, action and the kind of endearing storytelling that only Mark, Bob — and  Baymax — can deliver.”

Disney•Pixar’s “Finding Dory” reunites everyone’s favorite forgetful blue tang, Dory, with her friends Nemo and Marlin on a search for answers about her past. What can she remember? Who are her parents? And where did she learn to speak Whale?

Directed by Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo,” “WALL•E”) and produced by Lindsey Collins (co-producer “WALL•E”), the film features the voices of Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks, Ed O’Neill, Kaitlin Olson, Ty Burrell, Eugene Levy and Diane Keaton. “
