New Live-Action “Cinderella” Trailer Released

The Walt Disney Studios has released a new trailer for the spectacular new live-action film Cinderella.

Cinderella Poster

A live-action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale, Cinderella brings to life the timeless images from Disney’s 1950 animated masterpiece as fully-realized characters in a visually-dazzling spectacle for a whole new generation.

Cinderella opens in theaters March 13, 2015.

The story of Cinderella follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new Stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family.

Soon, she is forced to become their servant, disrespected, covered in ashes and spitefully renamed Cinderella. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her, and she continues to remain positive, determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.”

When Ella meets a dashing stranger in the woods, unaware that he is really the Prince (Richard Madden) and not merely Kit, an apprentice at the palace, she believes she has finally found a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the King (Derek Jacobi) summons all maidens in the kingdom to attend a royal ball at the palace, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit. Alas, her Stepmother forbids her to attend and callously destroys her dress.

Meanwhile, the calculating Grand Duke (Stellan Skarsgård) devises a plan to thwart the Prince’s hopes of reuniting with Ella and enlists the support of the devious Stepmother. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand. Soon, a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham Carter) steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin, a few mice and a magic wand, changes Cinderella’s life forever.

Cinderella opens in theaters March 13, 2015.

Walt Disney World Speedway Closing To Make Way for Magic Kingdom Area Improvements

Walt Disney World announced yesterday that the Richard Petty Driving Experience and Exotic Driving Experience will be closing in late-June 2015 for “future transportation improvements”. The Walt Disney World Speedway is expected to be demolished sometime after that.

walt-disney-world-speedway

It’s no secret that road improvements are coming to the area, as cast members already know of the expansion of Floridian Way and the moving of Cast Connection to allow backstage road improvements near Magic Kingdom. We can only speculate that changes will also be made to the Magic Kingdom toll plaza and parking exit to allow better traffic flow, and perhaps provide a separate vehicle entrance to the park from the road that takes guests to the monorail resorts nearby.

Hurrell Exhibit Brings Hollywood Glamour To The Walt Disney Family Museum

“Our world was a storybook –  a romantic fantasy.” – George Hurrell

In the special exhibition, Lights! Camera! Glamour! The Photography of George Hurrell, the Walt Disney Family Museum steps outside of its expected area of concentration and finds itself right where it belongs.

And while the allure of Hurrell’s photographic content may seem diametrically opposed to the work of Walt Disney, both men raised their particular crafts to an unprecedented level, through artistry, innovation and imagination, while communicating nearly opposite worlds of fantasy.

After all, the Scottish origin of the word glamour meant magic, or enchantment.

On display through June 29, the show brings together a selection of rare, vintage prints from George Edward Hurrell (1904–1992), one of the world’s most admired photographers, whose professional career helped define beauty for the motion picture industry and the world at large.

The “Golden Age of Hollywood” was in many ways a reaction to hard times.  A movie was a 25-cent exchange for a couple of hours of escape. Not exactly cheap, but a grand bargain. And while the world suffered through the Great Depression the movie industry thrived. Harrell’s work promoted and projected precisely that “idea” of the motion picture industry.  Both supported each other by bringing unparalleled elegance to a financially depressed and demoralized public.

Hurrell’s big break was a sitting with actress Norma Shearer, who sought to cast off her good-girl film image. She posed for a series of sensual portraits which convinced her husband, legendary MGM Production Chief Irving Thalberg, that she could play the lead in MGM’s racy new film, The Divorcee (1930) for which she won the Best Actress Academy Award. It brought Hurrell a job as a staff portrait photographer for MGM.

Trained as a painter, he brought a fine art aesthetic to his photographic work. He invented the Boom Light, among other techniques, as a means to “paint” with light.  He manipulated negatives with incredible precision. Be it removing numerous freckles from an a make-up free face, or lengthening and thickening eyelashes to a sumptuous state.

Hurrell married Walt Disney’s niece, Phyllis Bounds, and they had three children. In the 1950s, the family founded Hurrell Productions, a television production studio located on The Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank. The companies were wholly separate, but it did allow a “sharing” of animators and staff for the creation of animated television commercials. Walt’s daughter, Sharon, was employed as the assistant to her cousin, Phyllis Hurrell, and was personally delivered each morning to the door of the Hurrell Productions offices by her father.

Disney Characters as Chinese Zodiac Revelaed for “Garden of the Twelve Friends” Area at Shanghai Disneyland

Just in time for the Chinese New Year, Shanghai Disney Resort today unveiled more details of its Garden of the Twelve Friends, a whimsical area of the theme park that recasts twelve beloved Disney and Disney•Pixar characters as members of the Chinese zodiac.

Logo_SHDR_2014

“Introducing the twelve Disney zodiac characters to our guests is one way of conveying the best wishes of Shanghai Disney Resort during this traditional festival of family reunion in China,” said Philippe Gas, Shanghai Disney Resort General Manager.

Continuing the tradition of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts worldwide, Shanghai Disney Resort will welcome guests to immersive, magical, multi-day experiences. Garden of the Twelve Friends blends Disney’s signature storytelling with traditional Chinese elements and pays homage to the central role of the Chinese zodiac in daily life in China. The garden will offer resort-goers with fantastic photo opportunities and the chance to create everlasting memories with their families, friends, and favorite zodiac characters who represent their own Chinese zodiac sign of the year.

Shanghai Disney Resort selected 12 Disney characters to accurately symbolize each element of the Chinese zodiac, while retaining their own distinctive traits. For example, Shanghai Disney Resort settled upon Remy as the Year of Rat. From the Disney-Pixar film Ratatouille, Remy is the rat-turned-chef, who embodies cleverness, determination and a remarkable sense of smell — the true spirit of the zodiac sign with a fresh twist.

In honor of 2015, the Year of the Sheep, Shanghai Disney Resort is excited to present this year’s zodiac character: the “Jolly Holiday” lambs from Disney’s Mary Poppins. These lambs represent the elegance, charm, and gentleness of the Sheep, as well as the ancient Chinese saying, “San Yang Kai Tai,” or, “Three Sheep Bring Good Luck.”

In the Garden of the Twelve Friends, the garden wall is decorated with flowering vines and colorful mosaic vignettes where every character of the Chinese zodiac is rendered in Disney style. The beautiful glass mosaics are created in close collaboration with local Chinese artists and craftsmen. The serene interior, designed to resemble a classic Chinese garden complete with lush cherry blossoms, represents the perfect place for families and guests to gather and relax together.
The Twelve Disney Characters of the Chinese Zodiac include:

1. The Rat: Rémy. In Disney•Pixar’s Ratatouille, Rémy is a rat with big dreams – he longs to be a chef! With cleverness, determination… and a remarkable sense of smell… he turns the culinary world of Paris upside down.

Remy

2. The Ox: Babe The Blue Ox. Loyalty is important to Babe. This colossal hero of Disney’s Academy Award nominated short film Paul Bunyan devotes his life to helping his friend – a giant lumberjack – tame the wilderness.

Babe

3. The Tiger: Tigger. Winnie the Pooh’s friend Tigger is confident and cheerful. As he exuberantly bounces about on his springy tail, it’s easy to see that he is proud to be the only “tigger” in the Hundred Acre Wood.

Tigger

4. The Rabbit: Thumper. Sometimes the first friend is the best friend, especially when he is a rabbit! In Disney’s film Bambi, Thumper befriends a newborn fawn, and stands by him as he grows to be a prince of the forest.

Thumper

5. The Dragon: Mushu. The fast-talking little dragon named Mushu may be small in size, but he is big in spirit. His enthusiasm and bravery make him the perfect guardian for Disney’s Mulan on her quest for family honor.

Mushu

6. The Snake: Kaa. The wily python from Disney’s The Jungle Book, can be charming like other snakes. And he hates to fail, although his hilarious attempts to hypnotize other jungle creatures never work.

Kaa

7. The Horse: Maximus. This determined, quick-witted guard horse from Disney’s Tangled will not give up until justice is done! Which is why he helps reformed thief Flynn Rider free Princess Rapunzel from her tower.

Maximus

8. The Sheep: Jolly Holiday Lambs. The lambs featured in the “Jolly Holiday” song of Disney’s Mary Poppins represent the qualities that make those born in the Year of the Sheep so special – elegance, charm, serenity, and gentleness.

Jolly Holiday Lambs

9. The Monkey: Abu. The hero of Disney’s Aladdin is lucky to have a loyal friend like Abu. Sure his “Monkey Business” gets him into plenty of trouble, but his agility and cleverness are handy in dangerous situations.

Abu

10. The Rooster: Allan-A-Dale. This charming and melodic rooster narrates Disney’s Robin Hood. But Allan-A-Dale is also Robin’s trusted ally, joining him and his “merry men” in fighting injustice and helping the poor.

Allan-A-Dale

11. The Dog: Pluto. Like all dogs, Pluto is honest, faithful and friendly. His cheerful demeanor makes him a perfect companion for the optimistic Mickey Mouse, and he has become one of Disney’s biggest stars.

Pluto

12. The Pig: Hamm. In the Disney•Pixar Toy Story films, Hamm plays a wisecracking plastic piggy bank, but he’s a loyal and trustworthy companion to the end. He’ll keep your extra coins safe too!

Hamm

We here at WDWNT.com wish you a healthy and prosperous year of the “Jolly Holiday” Lambs!

2/17/15 Marvel News Mash-Up (Spider-Man Deal Details, Avengers Posters, Princess Leia, ETC.)

Update On Disney/Marvel And Sony’s “Spider-Man” Deal

Marvel-Sony-Spider-Man-Avengers-Crossover-570x294

Now that Disney/Marvel and Sony finally came to an agreement in regards to Spider-Man appearing in future Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, more information about the deal is making it’s way out. The following is what I was able to come up after researching all aspects of the deal:

  • No money changed hands by either company. This deal is being used so that both companies mutually benefit. It will benefit Sony by giving Spider-Man more exposure from appearing in Marvel movies like “The Avengers.” It will benefit Disney by having Marvel’s most popular character, Spider-Man, in their most popular movie franchise.
  • The final deal that Sony agreed to was to basically lease Spider-Man to Disney and in return Kevin Feige, head of Marvel, will co produce the new “Spider-Man” film scheduled to be released in 2017.
  • Marvel will have full creative control and help write the script for the new “Spider-Man” movie but Sony has final approval of the script.
  • Disney acquired Marvel in 2009 for $4 billion dollars. Since then they have been pursuing the “Spider-Man” movie rights from Sony for years offering billions of dollars for the franchise. Sony has rejected them every time.
  • The “Amazing Spider-Man 2” grossed $708 million dollars worldwide. The production budget and marketing costs for the movie was close to $500 million dollars. If you take into consideration that usually 50% of ticket sales goes to the theater owners over the distribution period of the film, Sony incurred a loss of about $150 million dollars theatrically. “Guardians Of The Galaxy” grossed $774 million dollars worldwide. The production budget and marketing costs for the movie was close to $350 million dollars. Unlike Sony, Disney incurred a profit from “Guardians” theatrical release. Both companies had additional revenue through home video sales. What stands out is that Spider-Man is one of the most recognizable comic book characters and previously had a franchise consisting of 4 profitable movies going into the release of “Amazing Spider-Man 2.” Prior to “Guardian’s” release, barely any moviegoers ever heard of them and two of its main characters were a talking raccoon and a tree that said three words. I heard that the parent company of Sony was very much aware of this and not happy.
  • Disney owns all of the merchandising rights to Spider-man, including movie merchandise, and having Spider-Man have more exposure in their movies will add to a big increase in Spider-Man related products. If Sony owned the merchandising rights to the “Spider-Man” movies, this deal between Disney/Marvel and Sony probably would not have happened.
  • The studios are looking for a much younger actor than Andrew Garfield, age 31, to portray Spider-Man. They would like to go with an actual teenager.
  • The story for the new “Spider-Man” movie will not be an origin story and will focus on Peter Parker being an awkward teenager by day and being Spider-Man at night. There will be less focus on his love life. All 5 previous “Spider-Man” movies focused on his love life and the studios want to go into a different direction.
  • By Disney planning to include some of their Marvel characters in Sony’s “Spider-Man’s” movies some sources are saying that this is the first step in Disney acquiring the movie rights. Disney could also be positioning itself into purchasing Spider-Man’s movie rights in the future.
  • The plan is for the new Spider-Man to appear in a Marvel movie “prior” to the release of the solo “Spider-man” movie in 2017. The movies prior to the new “Spider-Man” are:
    • ”Avengers: Age Of Ultron” – Maybe. It’s possible as a post credit teaser.
    • “Ant-Man” – Highly unlikely. I know, spiders and ants, but don’t see it happening.
    • “Captain America: Civil War” – Highly likely. Marvel is scrambling to have Spider-Man in this movie before it goes into production. Apparently two scripts were written. One with Black Panther being a central figure, the other with Spider-Man.
    • “Doctor Strange” – Mmmm, maybe. Doctor Strange is based in New York and so is Spider-Man. Plus Doctor Strange is a bit of a risk character with less people knowing who he is and the addition of Spider-Man could help the box office.
    • “Guardians Of The Galaxy 2” – Nope. Unless it takes place on Earth.

Even though we are learning more about the “Spider-Man” deal, there probably is a lot that has yet to be revealed.  The one thing that I feel most people have overlooked is Disney moving “Thor: Ragnarok” and other Phase 3 release dates to accommodate the opening of the new “Spider-Man” movie. Why would Disney do that? Sony will get 100% of the revenue and Disney will get nothing, except maybe a bump in Spider-Man merchandise revenue. This is either an act of goodwill on Disney’s part, or like what was mentioned, Disney is positioning itself to acquire the “Spider-Man” movie rights back. Disney had planned to release 3 Marvel movies in 2017 and with “Thor” moving to November of 2017 it resulted in “Black Panther” being pushed back to 2018. I think that is more than just goodwill on Disney’s part because they are sacrificing a whole movie that would add to Disney’s overall 2017 revenue. Disney is basically saying, “This is the movie that we want you to see before you see the rest of our Phase 3 movies.” Maybe I’m just an optimist but I think that move was a significant move on Disney’s part.

Definitely exciting times are ahead and expect news some news next month since “Captain America: Civil War” begins filming this April.

Actors Being Considered For The New “Spider-Man”

collagefddfdfd

According to Variety, Sony is looking at actors Dylan O’Brien (“The Maze Runner”) and Logan Lerman (“Percy Jackson”) as potential candidates for the role of the new Spider-Man. Both actors are 23 years old. As previously mentioned, the studios want to go with a younger Peter Parker who is an awkward high school teenager by day and superhero at night. Sony is looking for a new director to replace Marc Webb, who directed “Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2.”

comic1

The studio is also unsure if they will continue with Peter Parker or go with Miles Morales. In the comic “Ultimate Spider-Man,” Miles Morales is a young boy of African American and Hispanic decent who takes over the role of “Spider-Man” after Peter Parker dies (not much of a spoiler, this is comic is based in an alternative universe).
