Captain Blackbeard To Temporarily Haunt “Pirates of the Caribbean”

From Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald on the Disney Parks Blog:

Rendering of Ian McShane as Captain Blackbeard in the Pirates of the Caribbean Attractions at Disney Parks

On February 11, actor Ian McShane appeared on a soundstage in Los Angeles for a very special “head shot” – one that will soon be featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean attractions at Disneyland park and Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort.

Captain Blackbeard will make his appearance on the ghostly waterfall in the grotto scenes of the park attractions beginning May 20, coinciding with the release of the new film, “Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides,” in which McShane plays a starring role.

Walt Disney Imagineering writer Michael Sprout (who wrote the script for Bill Nighy as Davy Jones several years ago) was on hand to direct the special shoot with Ian McShane. Michael said, “He came in wearing his complete Blackbeard costume, including the sword, saying it helped him stay in character!”

Look for Blackbeard soon in this classic attraction, and the return of Davy Jones later this year.

Goofy’s Sky School and New Restaurants Opening Pushed Back to July 1st

From the Disney Parks Blog:

Paradise Pier at Disney California Adventure Park

The sun is shining and the temperature is rising – summertime is coming to Disneyland Resort! What better way to spend a summer day than with a waterside stroll? That’s why we’re thrilled to let you know that on July 1, the transformation of Paradise Pier will be complete at Disney California Adventure park.

Disney Soundsational Summer kicks off June 3 with the opening of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, Star Tours and “Mickey’s Soundsational Parade,” and the completion of Paradise Pier will continue our celebration of new attractions and experiences at Disneyland Resort.

Coming in for a landing on Paradise Pier will be Goofy’s Sky School, a Wild Mouse-style roller coaster which carries Guests through a flying lesson from Goofy. Last summer, we showed you this video in which Goofy dreams of opening his own flight school – and on July 1, his dream will come true!

Also, two new dining locations and one returning favorite will add to the excitement: Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta and Paradise Garden Grill. Pam Brandon will be sharing details on these new restaurants here on the Disney Parks Blog later today.

And Disneyland corn dog fans will be happy to know that the popular Corn Dog Castle will also make its return on July 1.

Read more about Disney Soundsational Summer here.

The Menus for the above restaurants have already been released on the Disney Parks Blog:

As Erin Glover reported earlier today, two new quick-service spots debut July 1 at Paradise Pier at Disney California Adventure park. These new restaurants will be side-by-side, with 900 shared seats. Open for lunch and dinner, both will feature healthful options throughout the day. Here’s what you’ll find on the menus:

At Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta, on-stage kitchens will turn out flatbreads, pastas and freshly tossed salads. Flatbreads run the gamut from a traditional cheese or pepperoni to a Portobello mushroom and spinach flatbread with pesto, artichokes, mozzarella, ricotta-salata and Pecorino Romano (two fancy cheeses).

Classic Spaghetti and Meatballs Dish

Pasta fans can dig into classic spaghetti and meatballs, pasta tossed with chicken in a sun-dried tomato cream sauce, or five-cheese ravioli with pesto and toasted pine nuts. Hearty salads include a chicken Caesar; Mediterranean chef salad with provolone, salami, capocollo, fresh mozzarella, cured ham, roasted peppers, olives and greens in a red wine vinaigrette; and a field greens salad with Craisins dried cranberries, raisins, caramelized pecans and a basil vinaigrette.

A Classic Greek Salad with Grilled Pita

Next door, Paradise Garden Grill has a healthful Mediterranean spin with a variety of skewers and kabobs – lemon-oregano chicken, Mediterranean, grilled steak or veggie and tofu served with rice pilaf, cucumber salad and grilled pita, with your choice of sauces to make it your own: Moroccan chili tomato, chimichurri, tandoori-spiced yogurt and tzatziki (a yogurt-cucumber-garlic sauce). A classic Greek salad with grilled pita also is on the menu. For kids, there’s a grilled chicken skewer or a beef kabob, both served with choice of sauce.

Time Lapse Footage of Little Mermaid Construction

Neat little video from the Disney Parks Blog:

We love time lapse footage around here! It shows how much progress we’re making! In this time lapse you’ll see the façade of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure in various stages of construction. You’ll notice at the beginning of the video – over to the right of the screen – the Palace of Fine Arts rotunda, originally the entrance to the former “Golden Dreams” attraction. Walt Disney Imagineers incorporated it into the new architecture. As the video progresses, you’ll see King Triton placed atop the arch, surrounded by relief carvings of six of Ariel’s six older sisters: Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Attina, Adella and Alana. The architecture is modeled after buildings found on boardwalks at the turn of the century, and was created using new digital 3D technology. Enjoy!

More Ariel’s Undersea Adventure Details Released

While their is not a lot of new information in this article, Imagineers Larry Nikolai and Chris Crump do mention a few interesting details about The Little Mermaid attraction opening June 3rd in Disney California Adventure.

From Disney Insider…

Look at this stuff, isn’t it neat? Paradise Pier area’s collection of turn-of-the-20th-century-style boardwalk attractions will be more complete when The Little Mermaid~Ariel’s Undersea Adventure opens June 3, 2011, at Disney California Adventure Park. With exterior architecture reflecting the era, Walt Disney Imagineers used whimsical special effects, gadgets and gizmos aplenty to create an immersive experience overflowing with seaside flavor. Creative Director Larry Nikolai and Show Designer Chris Crump discuss the whozits and whatzits galore behind the Park’s first fairy-tale-inspired ride.

Though construction took almost four years, Larry tells us that the desire to convey Ariel’s story as a ride-through attraction is almost as old as the film. “‘The Little Mermaid‘ has been around for 22 years. We started designing the attraction several times, but it never materialized.” Luckily for fans, all that’s changed.

According to Larry, Ariel’s Undersea Adventure attraction will be as memorable as the movie. “Our vision was to celebrate the music, because that’s what people remember. We recorded brand-new orchestra music for certain scenes and in-between transitions.” Guests can sing along to original songs from the film, including “Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl,” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls.”

Scuttle welcomes Guests into the shipwreck’s broken hull before they sail through scene after scene. From Ariel’s grotto to Sebastian’s “Under the Sea” extravaganza (the largest scene), the show boasts 183 characters in all, including 49 spinning starfish. Larry talks about how they selected characters for “Under the Sea.” “We chose characters mentioned in the lyrics – there are 129 in that scene alone!”

Cramming a full-length movie into a five-and-a-half-minute attraction is always tricky, but Larry points out some of the other challenges. “One of the most amazing things we’re doing is animating Ariel’s hair. It’s important her hair looked like it was ‘floating’ because it almost has a life of its own in the movie. We didn’t animate individual strands of hair … that would’ve been distracting.”

Fortunately, Larry says, Imagineers got pointers on the sculpture process from Ariel’s original animator, Glen Keane. “He advised us to handle it as a mass with its own fluid movement apart from hers – but not to ‘over-animate.'” Chris adds, “It’s common to work with a character artist, but not the original animator. John Lasseter wanted us to consult with Glen to ensure we remained faithful to his vision. We were very lucky!”

New technology made other Imagineering firsts possible, like the digital 3D design program used to model the building facility, portions of the ride, and the major environmental components. Larry explains that skin technology advances helped the team construct Ariel, King Triton, and Ursula. “The fact that Ariel really isn’t wearing much of a costume is challenging. To get the skins on and off each figure, we need seams, fastenings, and closures. Finding the right place for them is difficult when you’re working with that amount of exposed skin.”

Chris describes how skin is handled when it doesn’t cover the entire body. “The hands or necks of most figures usually terminate into a sleeve, cuff, or collar, which makes things a lot easier. In Ariel’s case, her body is all skin from the waist up to her arms and head – that’s a pretty complicated ‘skin suit.'” Larry says that King Triton and Ursula presented the same difficulty, but thankfully, “Skin technologies have changed immensely in the last 30 years. New materials hold up better and provide more movement. If we’d done Ariel 15 or 20 years ago, it might not be the same result … which is a really neat development.”

Ursula’s one of the most advanced Audio-Animatronics® figures ever built. As Larry puts it, “She’s amazing in sheer size alone – 12 feet wide by 7.5 feet tall. We’ve given her torso a ‘squash and stretch’ function (traditionally used in hand-drawn animation) so she can dance along to her number. Our figure animator, Ethan Reed, has done a wonderful job with her.” The staggering sea witch conjures up some surprising special effects at her caldron as well, which only enhance her delightfully dark side.

Now that their work is done, both Larry and Chris agree it’ll be hard to let Ariel go. “The show’s become so much a part of our lives … it’s such a high point for both of us. We’re going to miss the people too. While working on a project like this, you get close to everyone on your team – the artisans, architects, engineers, construction workers, painters, and electricians who’ve all worked tirelessly. I want to see very long lines,” laughs Chris. Larry nods. “Our finale goes a little beyond the film. I think it’ll surprise people and give them a lump in their throats … that’s what I’m hoping for.”

Video of Mickey’s Soundsational Parade Filming at Disneyland

Mint Crocodile has footage taken from earlier today of Mickey’s Soundsational Parade out on Main Street USA. Only two floats, the Mickey Float and the The Princess & the Frog Float, were out as Disney was filming the floats for commercial use. In the video, it is confirmed that the main theme is indeed the same used in Hong Kong for Flights of Fantasy with a slight lyric change.

If you would like to see photos of the parade, head over to Mintcrocodile’s blog….

Disney Parks Blog To Host Little Mermaid Meet-Up With Disney Imagineers

From the Disney Parks Blog:

We’ve taken you behind the scenes to see some of the amazing things the Walt Disney Imagineers are working on for the June 3 debut of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure at Disney California Adventure park. We’ve shown you what it’s like to create not only the Ariel Audio-Animatronics figure, but also how to animate her hair.

We’ve given you a glimpse of how impressive Ursula will be when she gets settled into her lair.

And we’ve shown you the beautiful “clam shells” – the vehicles that will take you “under the sea.”

Now we’re inviting you to join us for a very special meet-up, featuring Walt Disney Imagineers Lisa Girolami, Larry Nikolai and Chris Crump from the attraction’s creative team, as well as Walt Disney animators Andreas Deja and Mark Henn who worked on the animated feature film on which the attraction is based. Their tales will also be featured in an article in the May issue of D23 Magazine.

Please carefully read the details on the form when you enter. New Disney Gallery Exhibit Featuring the Art of Mary Blair

From the Disney Parks Blog:

In 1964, Walt Disney introduced a concept for a new attraction at the New York World’s Fair that would celebrate children around the world. More than four decades later, “it’s a small world” continues to be one of the most beloved Disney Parks attractions of all time.

'it's a small world' at Disneyland Park

Even more than the famous song that you can’t seem to get out of your head, one thing that sticks with me from “it’s a small world” is the art that takes you on a journey around the world. Artist Mary Blair is among those who played an integral part in the development of this classic attraction. Her artwork remains to this day, an inspiration to our Disney artists and Disney fans. Her designs have captured the hearts of many and can be seen throughout each “it’s a small world” attraction at Disney Parks worldwide.

Until today, there has never been an opportunity to showcase the collection that inspired it all. But thanks to Kim Irvine, Dave Golbeck and team, The Disney Gallery will unveil a brand new exhibit May 13 to celebrate the art of Mary Blair and 45 years of this classic Disney attraction.

The other day I had the unique opportunity to get a quick peek of what you’ll see when the exhibit debuts. Here are a few of the images
