UPDATE: Woman Attempted to Bring Gun into Animal Kingdom Monday, Same Day as Epcot Incident

As it turns out, our first report Monday of a person bringing a loaded weapon into a Walt Disney World Theme Park was correct.  There were actually two incidents Monday morning, one at Epcot and one at Animal Kingdom.  We had initially reported the Animal Kingdom incident, news of which we received from an inside source at the park, but as the Epcot incident unfolded, we had assumed our source was confused, as we would have never thought such an occurrence would happen twice within hours of each other.

But indeed our source was correct.  Court records show an Alabama woman, Baleigh Turner, was arrested on a charge of carrying a concealed firearm, after Disney security found a .380 caliber pistol in her backpack. Apparently the woman did have a concealed weapon permit in Alabama, but it had expired.  Even if the permit had been valid, weapons are not permitted in Disney theme parks.

REVIEW: Liberty Tree Tavern Removes Pot Roast & Turkey Lunch Meals In Favor of Family Style Meals

If you have been to the Liberty Tree Tavern for lunch at the Magic Kingdom, you without a doubt are familiar with the New England Pot Roast and Pilgrims’ Feast meals. If you aren’t, here is the old menu to refresh your memory a bit:

Lunch menu at Liberty Tree Tavern, February 2016

Lunch menu at Liberty Tree Tavern, February 2016

Liberty Tree Tavern has always been one of my favorite lunch spots at the park, being fairly inexpensive and having a menu of really solid comfort food. In fact, you can read my glowing review of the former lunch menu that I did back in February if you want to hear more about it.

On Wednesday, October 26th, 2016, the menu above ceased to be. In its place was this:

Now, not only are the Pot Roast and the Pilgrims’ Feast gone, but as you can see, the menu has been greatly reduced in overall options. You can still get turkey if you really want it, but you will have to order the infamous “All-You-Care-to-Enjoy” meal which is now also offered at lunch in addition to dinner, where it has always been.

Is the move a positive one, or is this another Plaza Restaurant style disaster? Let’s find out.

Liberty Tree Tavern “All You Care to Eat” Family Style Meal ($33.00 Adults, $19.00 Children)

The “all you care to enjoy” feast includes 3 courses: Declaration Salad, The Patriot’s Platter, and then dessert.

Liberty Tree Tavern bread and butter

Liberty Tree Tavern bread and butter

The meal begins with bread and the Declaration Salad. The bread is probably the highlight of the meal, soft, flaky rolls served with a sweet honey butter.

Declaration Salad

Declaration Salad

The salad is very standard, but good for what it is. I actually prefer the salad at the Diamond Horseshoe, but that is where compliments for that dining establishment end.

img_4940

Liberty Tree Tavern macaroni and cheese

Liberty Tree Tavern macaroni and cheese

On to the main course, the macaroni and cheese is a highlight if you enjoy such a dish, but there’s nothing really special about it. Sometime you just want some good mac and cheese though, it doesn’t always need a gimmick.

Liberty Tree Tavern Patriot's Platter

Liberty Tree Tavern Patriot’s Platter

As for the meats, the turkey is always a highlight, cooked well enough and rather enjoyable. I thought the pork had a weird flavor to it and was a little fatty for my taste. The sliced prime rib was fine, although depending on the batch you end up with, it might more closely resemble an inferior piece of beef. There was some au jus on the side with it, which I would recommend dousing it with.

Our second helping was much healthier, but the prime rib had a very different appearance.

The mashed potatoes and the stuffing are just as good as I remember, and the seasonal vegetables were good enough.

Liberty Tree Tavern Bread Pudding

Liberty Tree Tavern Bread Pudding

The dessert offered with the feast is the warm bread pudding. This was really good, but the entire time I was eating it, I just wished that I was at Ohana at the Polynesian Village Resort (home of the world’s greatest bread pudding in my opinion). Also, the pieces of crust in here were really hard to chew, but otherwise the rest was moist and delicious.

OVERALL

Since the clam chowder and the cheeseburger stayed on the menu, my usual lunch order from Liberty Tree Tavern is still available, but it is hard to deny that this is a significant downgrade to the Liberty Tree Tavern. The Liberty Boys BLT with pork belly was delicious, the soup of the day was a nice offering, and the pot roast and cheaper Pilgrims’ Feast were a beloved mainstay of the menu, and now all of that is gone. In the short time we sat down for lunch, we saw two guests complain about the removal of the pot roast and Pilgrims’ Feast. The couple seated next to us up and left just minutes after being seated, and the table adjacent to them was given a “no strings” FastPass after complaining that they had to order something else.

While I occasionally find myself craving the comfort food of the “all you care to eat” offering, I would much rather have the diverse lunch menu and instead come to Liberty Tree Tavern for dinner if that is in fact what I wanted. Instead, you now have a restaurant that may only be a notch above the Diamond Horseshoe Saloon… and that’s bad… really bad.

I still enjoy the “all-you-care-to eat” meal, but the Magic Kingdom has changed a lot in the last few years. What was one of my favorite meals at the park (albeit originally with the added offering of Disney characters for dinner) now exists in a world with Skipper Canteen, the sweet and spicy chicken and waffle sandwich, and even a Pecos Bill’s menu that I really enjoy. In a brave-new-dining-world of far superior choices, I can’t in good conscious recommend a visit to Liberty Tree Tavern for lunch unless you really just want what is pictured above (and maybe the Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake, because that is amazing). Otherwise, there are plenty of other fine restaurants at the Magic Kingdom, they just don’t exist along this street between Frontierland and Liberty Square.

RUMOR: Disney Has An Opening Date for Rivers of Light at Animal Kingdom and It’s Really Soon

I know that there has been a tremendous amount of speculation as to when Disney might be debuting Rivers of Light, the new nighttime show for Animal Kingdom (which is now a whopping 6 months late after being set to debut April 22nd, 2016), but it looks like we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel now. Supposedly. Maybe.

"Rivers of Light,"the majestic nighttime jewel, coming to Disney's Animal Kingdom creates an illuminating musical experience for guests. Currently in development with a premiere date to be announced soon, "Rivers of Light" will celebrate the magic of animals, humans and the natural world with a blend of performers, floating lanterns and theatrical animal imagery. (David Roark, photographer)

If sources are to be believed, Disney is eyeing November 18th, 2016 as the official debut date for Rivers of Light. This is not set in stone and is still being discussed internally, but it seems highly likely at this point in time. This would be just days ahead of the Destination D event where it is believed D23 members in attendance will get to be a part of a private showing of the new nighttime spectacular.

Regardless, we expect an announcement from Disney very, very soon.

If it makes you feel any better, some cast members who have been present for recent dress rehearsals of Rivers of Light have called it “stunning”, “beautiful”, and one even went so far as to call it “the greatest thing I have ever seen in my life”. Color me excited for this one, folks.

PizzeRizzo at Hollywood Studios Opens November 18th; Menu Revealed

PizzeRizzo – the classic family pizzeria owned by Rizzo – will open in Muppets Courtyard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on November 18. While enjoying personal-sized pies, guests will find décor inspired by Rizzo, as well as his extended family and friends who have visited PizzeRizzo over the years throughout the two-story eatery. Be sure to head upstairs to Rizzo’s Deluxe Supreme Banquet Hall, where there’s a wedding reception already in progress; join the party and show off your best moves under the disco ball.

If you’re looking for a lighter option, the Antipasto Salad features a bed of Romaine lettuce piled high with tomatoes, Mozzarella, Kalamata olives, ham, pepperoni, salami and Balsamic Vinaigrette.

Disney Springs Renames Festival of Holiday Trees to Christmas Tree Trail, Full List of Trees

Dr. Strange Meet and Greet Not Happening, Moana Preview Coming to Hollywood Studios

For a limited time starting November 5, a sneak peek of Disney’s next big adventure, the sweeping animated feature “Moana,” will be presented as part of the One Man’s Dream attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, offering guests an advance look at scenes from the film. The removal of the Doctor Strange preview shuts down any hope of a character meet and greet coming, despite Disney casting for actors to portray the hero. The work inside of One Man’s Dream is likely related to some sort of new theme park model, possibly for Pandora: The World of AVATAR at Disney’s Animal Kingdom or the Star Wars & Toy Story Lands at Hollywood Studios.

skjdno80

This special preview of “Moana” is also currently playing at Disneyland Resort, where guests can catch the sneak peek in Disney California Adventure park at the Bug’s Life Theater, featuring a 3D presentation with exclusive in-theater effects.

Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess and the Frog”), produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”), and featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa‘i, “Moana” sails into theaters in 3D on November 23, 2016.
