COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW: “Rebel Hangar: A Star Wars Lounge Experience!” Offers Surprises in Quality and Atmosphere

When Disney hastily added the “Rebel Hangar: A Star Wars Lounge Experience!” to the line-up for Star Wars Weekends 2015, it seemed like it would just be a thrown-together dining option to better handle the dinner crowds on the busy weekend days. What they threw-together is actually a surprisingly affordable and fun restaurant with some really spectacular small plates.

The right side of Backlot Express was converted for the affair, including some outdoor seating space.

IMG_2909

Outdoor seating is reserved for walk-ups, otherwise referred to at the themed-restaurant as “Rebel Scum”.

272

The atmosphere inside is great. A 45 minute loop of Star Wars music in a lounge style plays while guests dine among a collection of Star Wars related items.

269

It is not a character meal, but we did have encounters with Sabine and Ezra from Rebels, the Modal Nodes band, and some other creatures during our time in the Hangar. You can stop them for pictures, but the characters are roaming as if they were visiting the lounge, not like other character meals where they actually visit each table. This won’t even happen if you visit on a non-Star Wars Weekends night.

262

We’ll need a seperate post just to talk about all of the hidden references in the space.

The Imperial Blue was just perfect for me.

IMG_2912

Tatooine Sunset is very sweet, but tasty.

IMG_2913

Dagobah Swamp Juice is great if you like sweet-and-sour.

IMG_2922

The Rebel Red was likely our least favorite drink, but it wasn’t terrible.

IMG_2927

As you can tell, we really liked the X-Wing “glow cubes” attached the glasses… They were nice enough to offer them with every alcoholic drink regardless of what the menu shows. The X-Wing is only available here.

IMG_2914

The dark fried had the ubiquitous Disney counter service chicken breast nuggets paired with Darth Vader waffles, accompanied by maple syrup and BBQ sauce. This wan’t anything special, but blended together really well.

IMG_2924

We weren’t really crazy about ordering the fruit and cheese tray, but we did so we could review it. We were glad that we did as all of the fruit was quite fresh and the cheeses very tasty. The C-3P0 is bread by the way…

IMG_2920

Chips and Sith was one of the best options. The dip was flavorful and the presentation was really cool.

IMG_2917

Our table’s absolute favorite item was the Lightsaber Bites. This is the chef’s favorite dish and it isn’t hard to imagine why after tasting them. The portion is more than enough for an entree as these are much bigger than those you’ll find at Trader Sam’s. They also tasted better and come with a side of delicious chips.

IMG_2921

The sliders were fairly standard, but really get lost in the shuffle as there are many better dishes here.

IMG_2918

The pommes frites were the standard Disney quick service fries with some cheese on them, but the garlic aioli dipping sauce made these taste fantastic.

IMG_2919

IMG_2915

The trio of Thermal Detonators was my personal favorite. The right amount of spice on these fall-off-the-bone pork wings made for an irresistible combination!

IMG_2916

IMG_2926

The Dark Side Chocolate Martini was way too strong. It comes with a dark chocolate truffle on a stick.

IMG_2930

The Yoda Key Lime Cake had great flavor, basically a spongy key lime pie (as should have been assumed since it is called cake)

IMG_2928

The mini-cupcake trio was a fun way to try all of the large cupcakes at the event without eating 3 large cupcakes

IMG_2932

The Darth Vader with peanut butter is always my favorite

IMG_2933

I wasn’t crazy for the hazelnut-flavored Yoda cupcake.

IMG_2934

I didn’t think the Jabba the Hutt cupcake at all tasted like a Salted Caramel Latte. The trio comes in the Han Solo popcorn bucket for only slightly more than if you buy it full of popcorn at the event.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised how great the food was. Unlike Trader Sam’s, I think the food menu here is spectacular while the drink menu is weaker, but not terrible. Overall, it was worth the price, possible more so than either of the other Star Wars character meals at the park (although those guarantee a character greeting). If you happen to catch some characters and get some photos, the value here can not be beat. While you can’t compare it to the music and props inside, the food will not disappoint if you try to walk-up and sit at an outside table, which is better than missing this experience all-together. I don’t doubt this will return in some fashion every year (or permanently in a Star Wars-themed land), and I couldn’t be more excited to see how they improve upon it with more planning time.

Fans are encouraged to watch the beloved film all weekend long. And for those who would like to watch as one big group, at 5 p.m. PDT on Saturday, June 13, D23 encourages fans around the world to hit “play” on their DVD, Blu-ray, or digital device to kick off the largest Lady and the Tramp viewing party ever. Lady and the Tramp, which had its premiere on June 16, 1955, tells the story of Lady, a young cocker spaniel from a “respectable” home, who falls in love with Tramp, a mutt who lives in the railroad yards. The idea for the film came from a short story by Ward Greene entitled “Happy Dan, the Whistling Dog.” The film stars such voice talents as Barbara Luddy as Lady; Larry Roberts as Tramp; and Peggy Lee as Darling, the Siamese cats, and Peg, the show dog.

Let us know in the comments how you will be celebrating Lady and the Tramp on June 13. Let’s have a WDWNT contingent in the viewing party!

VIDEO & REVIEW: “World of Color – Celebrate!” Debuts at Disney California Adventure

If you thought World of Color was impressive in 2010, the technical wizards at WDI will blow you away again with the new “World of Color – Celebrate!”. However, they seemingly got caught up in the new technology and forgot what kind of show they were making.

Let’s start with the good: new lightning, laser, fountain, and smoke effects make the show brand new again and set the stage for future shows that can do things that the 2010 infrastructure never could. The bad: the show is horribly disjointed and breaks away from any sense of the theme advertised at several points.

The show is meant to celebrate Walt Disney and is hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and Mickey Mouse. The theme is perfectly executed in the early segments featuring Mickey Mouse and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but collapses when a montage of Disney Animation starts to nondescript music and no actual dialogue from the films. The touching montages of the former show aren’t replicated here, although there are some sure-to-be-emotional moments where we see Walt talking about his creations or a lovely look at Disneyland through the years. But overall, the show is stopped dead in its tracks for a random Frozen musical number or a clip show of Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer moments. It just doesn’t make sense and it isn’t intended to just be a trip through movie moments like the old show. The theme of the show essentially changes several time, and by the end it is hard to tell if we are celebrating the achievements of Walt Disney or Bob Iger and John Lasseter.

In the end it feels like they got ten minutes into the show and realized they only half a show to cover another 70 years of Disney legacy. It also seems there may have been some demands from management to include larger segments with contemporary characters and upcoming films.

Regardless, the future looks bright for the Paradise Pier lagoon with all of the new tricks the show has up its sleeves, but for now, we will have to live with the slightly shorter and more disjointed “World of Color – Celebrate!”.

BREAKING: Disneyland Will Test FastPass+ System This Summer, Hong Kong Launching in 2016

For those who felt FastPass+ and MyMagic+ were failing at Walt Disney World, you may want to start re-thinking your theories.

magicBandFeatured

As most of the major bugs in the system have been worked out over the last few months, it seems Disney is ready to launch the system globally. The Disneyland Resort in California will be conducting their very first tests for FastPass+ in August 2015. Hong Kong Disneyland will officially launch their system with the opening of the Iron Man Experience in 2016.

FastPass+ takes the FastPass ticketing system into the digital age, removing the paper FastPass distribution points at attractions with a system guests can use to book a FastPass online, in an app, or at one of several designated kiosks within the parks and have it linked to their ticket/MagicBand. Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland still use the original FastPass system currently.

EDITORIAL: Liberty Tree Tavern and the Sum of Magic Kingdom Dining

Exposed wood, brick, masonry, and staples from the Revolutionary Era contribute to the theme in the primary waiting area.

Exposed wood, brick, masonry, and staples from the Revolutionary Era contribute to the theme in the primary waiting area.

During a recent trip to Orlando I finally made it to Disney’s Liberty Tree Tavern for a lunch. While this meal in-and-of-itself isn’t necessarily noteworthy, doing so completed my Magic Kingdom dining “cycle” — a meal at every restaurant in Magic Kingdom. We’ve been trying to make it to the Liberty Tree for years but it has always been trumped by another option — most recently Be Our Guest. Now that we’re approaching that magical 180 days out marker for holiday vacations, it seemed like a good time to explore Magic Kingdom dining.

It’s been my experience that, while the Magic Kingdom offers perhaps the best Counter Service options in Walt Disney World, the park itself comes up somewhat short in the Table Service category. While the recent addition of Be Our Guest changes this at least thematically, for me it didn’t really change my position culinarily. This is why knocking the last two out — Liberty Tree Tavern and Plaza Restaurant — emerged as such a personal objective.

Let’s begin this review with theming. It should come as no surprise to anyone that guests enter the Liberty Tree story by stepping into Colonial-meets-Revolutionary America. Hosts, hostesses, and servers are dressed in very believable period costumes. Exposed wood, old masonry, brick, a hearth, and staples from the late 18th Century and early 19th Century create an atmosphere that hearkens back to our nation’s Revolutionary Era. To a large degree it works. Admittedly, for some reason Liberty Square has always been hard for me to get excited about. It may be the transitions or perhaps the size. By contrast, I do not have a similar problem with New Orleans Square in Anaheim. Regardless, different rooms themed around quintessential Americans like Thomas Jefferson, John Paul Jones, Paul Revere, Betsy Ross, Benjamin Franklin, and Georgia Washington with artifacts and props unique to each contribute effectively. The Liberty Tree Tavern is a logical “next step” in the Liberty Square immersive experience. In fact, it may actually “complete” Liberty Square.

There are two things worth noting regarding the atmosphere and theme. One, everything slowed down considerably once inside. We all know how crazy a day at the Magic Kingdom can be. For whatever reason, all that slipped away when we stepped into the Liberty Tree Tavern. Life just seemed to move slower, more simply. And it was nice. Second, the interior seemed tired. The energy that I’m accustomed to feeling in one of Disney’s signature restaurants just wasn’t present. My guess is that the renovations scheduled for this summer have been scheduled to address this aspect as much as anything.

Regarding the food, I would say that the Liberty Tree Tavern is “good”. And if you’re looking for a bit of a change of pace and fare that you either normally wouldn’t expect in the park or non-Thanksgiving, it rates even better than good. A friend and I ordered an appetizer, two entrees, and a desert. (I’m not bold enough yet to try using my blog credentials to ask for additional samples.) First, the Crab and Lobster Dip for Two is outstanding as an appetizer. As seafood goes it was fresh and tasty. The dish itself was a perfect appetizer. I went with the standard New England Pot Roast and my friend opted for the Pilgrim’s Feast. We were both pleased. Other than the Angus Chuck Cheeseburger, the pot roast is Liberty Tree’s most popular dish and it’s easy to see why. The vegetables were cooked to perfection and the braised beef in Cabernet wine and mushroom sauce was tender and perfectly seasoned.

The New England Pot Roast at Liberty Tree Tavern. (The author is not a professional food photographer.)

I sampled the Pilgrim’s Feast of traditional roast turkey with herb bread stuffing, mashed potatoes, and vegetables but didn’t find it particularly tasty or unique, but then again it’s not necessarily trying to be. I mean, it’s turkey. But it’s still traditional New England fare prepared in a way consistent with the time period. Regardless I felt like I scored extra points in some way for eating at least semi-healthy in a theme park. In that same spirit, we chose not to go with the more popular Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake for desert, but the Fruit Crisp. Even though I’m sure the Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake is as good as its name would let on, and comes highly recommended, I would absolutely recommend the Fruit Crisp as well. Looking back on it, the better decision would have been ditching the whole “eating more healthy” approach and just ordering them both. Next time we will.

It should be said here that the lunch menu is a la carte while the dinner menu is much more limited. You can check out the lunch menu in various places and I would say, relatively speaking, it is very affordable with multiple options. The dinner menu ranges from $33 to $38 per person, and the Patriot’s Platter is the only entree option. It includes roast turkey breast, carved beef, sliced pork with traditional accompaniments, and mixed greens with house-made dressing.

The Pilgrim's Feast is available for lunch at the Liberty Tree Tavern

The Pilgrim’s Feast is available for lunch at the Liberty Tree Tavern

It’s difficult to place the Liberty Tree Tavern within the hierarchy of Magic Kingdom table service options. Plaza Restaurant, Crystal Palace, Cinderella’s Royal Table, Be Our Guest, Tony’s Town Square, and to a lesser extent Tomorrowland Terrace and Diamond Horseshoe all have an upside. For me they stack up like this: Be Our Guest and Cinderella’s Royal Table are the most impressive and iconic, while Crystal Palace offers the best character dining. The Plaza Restaurant is far and away the best value and its soda shop vibe fits perfectly with Main Street. Tony’s Town Square, however, serves up a wonderful nostalgia. It may be said that, while Liberty Tree Tavern doesn’t blow you away in any one category, it scores well enough to be among the best overall in terms of theming, food, and value. And to reiterate an earlier point, the Tavern completes Liberty Square in a way other venues do not. Even though I have completed the Magic Kingdom table service cycle, I’m still wrestling with this one question: If I had to choose one Magic Kingdom table service to rule them all, which one would it be?
