Captain Blackbeard To Temporarily Haunt “Pirates of the Caribbean”

From Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald on the Disney Parks Blog:

Rendering of Ian McShane as Captain Blackbeard in the Pirates of the Caribbean Attractions at Disney Parks

On February 11, actor Ian McShane appeared on a soundstage in Los Angeles for a very special “head shot” – one that will soon be featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean attractions at Disneyland park and Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort.

Captain Blackbeard will make his appearance on the ghostly waterfall in the grotto scenes of the park attractions beginning May 20, coinciding with the release of the new film, “Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides,” in which McShane plays a starring role.

Walt Disney Imagineering writer Michael Sprout (who wrote the script for Bill Nighy as Davy Jones several years ago) was on hand to direct the special shoot with Ian McShane. Michael said, “He came in wearing his complete Blackbeard costume, including the sword, saying it helped him stay in character!”

Look for Blackbeard soon in this classic attraction, and the return of Davy Jones later this year.

Goofy’s Sky School and New Restaurants Opening Pushed Back to July 1st

From the Disney Parks Blog:

Paradise Pier at Disney California Adventure Park

The sun is shining and the temperature is rising – summertime is coming to Disneyland Resort! What better way to spend a summer day than with a waterside stroll? That’s why we’re thrilled to let you know that on July 1, the transformation of Paradise Pier will be complete at Disney California Adventure park.

Disney Soundsational Summer kicks off June 3 with the opening of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, Star Tours and “Mickey’s Soundsational Parade,” and the completion of Paradise Pier will continue our celebration of new attractions and experiences at Disneyland Resort.

Coming in for a landing on Paradise Pier will be Goofy’s Sky School, a Wild Mouse-style roller coaster which carries Guests through a flying lesson from Goofy. Last summer, we showed you this video in which Goofy dreams of opening his own flight school – and on July 1, his dream will come true!

Also, two new dining locations and one returning favorite will add to the excitement: Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta and Paradise Garden Grill. Pam Brandon will be sharing details on these new restaurants here on the Disney Parks Blog later today.

And Disneyland corn dog fans will be happy to know that the popular Corn Dog Castle will also make its return on July 1.

Read more about Disney Soundsational Summer here.

The Menus for the above restaurants have already been released on the Disney Parks Blog:

As Erin Glover reported earlier today, two new quick-service spots debut July 1 at Paradise Pier at Disney California Adventure park. These new restaurants will be side-by-side, with 900 shared seats. Open for lunch and dinner, both will feature healthful options throughout the day. Here’s what you’ll find on the menus:

At Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta, on-stage kitchens will turn out flatbreads, pastas and freshly tossed salads. Flatbreads run the gamut from a traditional cheese or pepperoni to a Portobello mushroom and spinach flatbread with pesto, artichokes, mozzarella, ricotta-salata and Pecorino Romano (two fancy cheeses).

Classic Spaghetti and Meatballs Dish

Pasta fans can dig into classic spaghetti and meatballs, pasta tossed with chicken in a sun-dried tomato cream sauce, or five-cheese ravioli with pesto and toasted pine nuts. Hearty salads include a chicken Caesar; Mediterranean chef salad with provolone, salami, capocollo, fresh mozzarella, cured ham, roasted peppers, olives and greens in a red wine vinaigrette; and a field greens salad with Craisins dried cranberries, raisins, caramelized pecans and a basil vinaigrette.

A Classic Greek Salad with Grilled Pita

Next door, Paradise Garden Grill has a healthful Mediterranean spin with a variety of skewers and kabobs – lemon-oregano chicken, Mediterranean, grilled steak or veggie and tofu served with rice pilaf, cucumber salad and grilled pita, with your choice of sauces to make it your own: Moroccan chili tomato, chimichurri, tandoori-spiced yogurt and tzatziki (a yogurt-cucumber-garlic sauce). A classic Greek salad with grilled pita also is on the menu. For kids, there’s a grilled chicken skewer or a beef kabob, both served with choice of sauce.

Embarcadero Gifts Opening May 31st to Passholders

From the Disney Parks Blog:

There’s so much happening around here! This week I debated what to blog about but decided to pick a topic that would be the envy of those on land and at sea.

With just under a month to go before the opening of Disney California Adventure park’s newest attraction, The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, I thought I’d show you some of the treasures, thingamabobs and whatchamacallit’s that you can look forward to finding in some of our nearby stores.

First up on the list of ‘must have’ items would have to be the apparel. Not only will you make a splash when you hit the streets in your Little Mermaid inspired clothing, but now your little ones can, too! Like to accessorize? My pick is definitely the Little Mermaid scarf. There’s something for almost everyone, or at least everyone who considers Ariel among their favorite Disney characters.

Where can I find these, you ask? Here are a few insider tips:

Embarcadero Gifts is a new location, located right across from The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure attraction. The location will open to park guests in early June. Passholders take note here, on May 31 and June 1, you’ll have the ‘first look’ at the new location and merchandise, including a special commemorative coin, created just for you. In search of other who’s-its and what’s-its then be sure to dive in to Treasures in Paradise.

“X” will mark the spot for all of these treasures this Summer, so be sure to stop in and take a look, but before you do, find out more about what’s ‘in store’ at www.ArtofDisneyParks.com.

How many of you consider “The Little Mermaid” one of your favorite Disney films and are as excited as I am for the June 3 opening of the attraction at Disney California Adventure park?

If your are wondering where this shop is going, it will be located in the San Francisco building occupying the space formally occupied by the Luminaria lobby and later on a CM break room.

New Star Tours Marquee Poster Revealed

From Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald on the Disney Parks Blog:

Today, May 4, we unveiled a stunning new piece of Star Tours art which serves as the attraction poster at Disneyland park and the marquee at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Designed by Imagineer Scot Drake, the piece features the new Starspeeder 1000 surrounded by many of the planets, vehicles and characters from the show. Look for Darth Vader lurking in the shadows.

The photo below shows the new marquee as it was being installed just this morning at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The Adventures Continue – only weeks away!

Time Lapse Footage of Little Mermaid Construction

Neat little video from the Disney Parks Blog:

We love time lapse footage around here! It shows how much progress we’re making! In this time lapse you’ll see the façade of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure in various stages of construction. You’ll notice at the beginning of the video – over to the right of the screen – the Palace of Fine Arts rotunda, originally the entrance to the former “Golden Dreams” attraction. Walt Disney Imagineers incorporated it into the new architecture. As the video progresses, you’ll see King Triton placed atop the arch, surrounded by relief carvings of six of Ariel’s six older sisters: Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Attina, Adella and Alana. The architecture is modeled after buildings found on boardwalks at the turn of the century, and was created using new digital 3D technology. Enjoy!
