Portobello at Disney Springs Will Not Return, New Restaurant with Outdoor Bar Announced

Levy Restaurants, a Chicago-based restaurant company which operates more than 100 food-service locations in the United States and Canada, has announce the development of a new, Italian restaurant concept at Disney Springs. Previously, it had been indicated that this restaurant would remain Portobello and undergo extensive menu changes only.

 width=

James Beard award-winner and Top Chef Master, Tony Mantuano, is leading the development of the restaurant, which will replace the space at Disney Springs that was occupied by Portobello Country Italian Trattoria. The new restaurant’s menu will feature dishes inspired by Chef Tony’s adventures across the many regions of Italy.

In order to accommodate the large-scale renovations, Portobello closed its doors April 24 with plans for the new concept to reopen in early Fall 2017.

Based on the concept art, it appears that an outdoor bar area will be added during the renovations.

“We’ve been grateful to serve our loyal guests at Portobello for the last seven years,” said Andy Lansing, President and CEO of Levy Restaurants. “We look forward to welcoming our guests back to the location early this fall when we unveil a new concept at Disney Springs.”

REVIEW: “The Polite Pig” Preview Event Offers First Tastes and Sips of Disney Springs’ Newest Eatery

On Thursday, we were lucky enough to attend a “friends and family preview” event for The Polite Pig, the newest eatery at Disney Springs which is scheduled to officially open on April 10th. If you would like to read more about this location, please refer to our last story about the opening of the restaurant.

 width=

The Polite Pig is located in The Town Center section of Disney Springs, right next to the fountain that greets guests at the pedestrian entrance to the Lime Parking Garage.

 width=

Once through the doors, you are greeted by a prep station behind glass. The kitchen is also visible through windows in the main dining room.

 width=

 width=

Behind the bank of registers is a wall of taps. If you are not comfortable with establishments that serve alcohol, you may want to stop reading this review now…

 width=

The interior is themed as most Disney Springs eateries are: it was once something else (in story) and was converted into a restaurant. The Polite Pig apparently used to be a Farmer’s Market.

 width=

The interior is nice, but many of these places at Disney Springs are starting to blend together. The Polite Pig almost feels like a combination of design elements from D-Luxe Burger, the Welcome Center and the restrooms around the area. The look is good enough, but is more of the same.

 width=

Upon ordering and paying, guests are given a pager and then can pick a table to dine at.

 width=

If you dine outside, you will have to put the device on one of these readers.

 width=

There is an indoor/outdoor bar area as well where guests will find the full alcohol menu available. The restaurant is a unique hybrid in that once you are seated, a server will come by to assist with anything you might need, including adding additional food or drink to your order. I don’t know of another counter service establishment at Disney World where you can do this. Of course, you could also sit at the bar or just get food and drink to go from here.

 width=

The Polite Pig Menu

 width=

The menu is fairly focused on barbecue as it offers sandwiches and assorted smoked entrees, but there are also interesting snacks, salads, and sides.

 width=

Seven (yeah, seven) sauces are available at the condiment bar, as well as spiced vinegar. Of course, there is also the highly touted bourbon menu featuring over 50 selections.

 width=

All of the four pictured here were good, but my favorite was the Signature Black Pepper (as I like a little spice). I look forward to trying the Fresno Hot Sauce and Hot Honey on my next visit.

 width=

 width=

If you purchase a fountain drink, a number of the usual offerings are available, but The Polite Pig also has its own Sweet and Unsweet Tea. The Blue Sky Root Beer is also available at Blaze Pizza, where it is often a guest favorite.

The Southern Pig ($12)

 width=

Pulled Pork, Apple Slaw, Mustard Sauce, and Duke’s Mayo

The Southern Pig is not your average pulled pork sandwich. The pork is actually “less pulled” than you might expect, left in large chucks heavily coated in the mustard sauce. The flavor is not what I was expecting, but was delicious nonetheless. The pork is tender and the bun is nice and crispy, working well with everything in-between.

 width=

Half Chicken ($15)

 width=

Half Chicken with a citrus rub served with Slaw, Texas Toast, and Choice of 1 Market Side.

This is a massive portion of chicken with a smokey flavoring that was as unique as it was delectable. Sure, you will have to put a little work in to get the meat off the bones, but it will be worth your time once you get the chicken into one of the fantastic sauces offered. The Texas Toast is pretty standard, but that isn’t a bad thing. It reminded me a lot of the toast offered at Sonny’s BBQ, a restaurant chain present here in Central Florida.

 width=

For $15, this giant chicken, a piece of Texas Toast, and a side are an insane value, at least for Walt Disney World… and I probably don’t have to tell you that it’s better than Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe or the ABC Commissary.

 width=

The absolute best thing we had at the restaurant was the BBQ Cauliflower with Paprika Sour Cream. The vegetable was cooked perfectly, mixed with surprisingly well paired granola clusters, and accented nicely with the sour cream. I can’t recommend this enough, and I am not a person who generally enjoys cauliflower.

Orange Blossom Honey Cake ($7, Yeah, $7)

 width=

The Honey Cake was a little off putting in the first taste, but once I was better prepared for it, I found myself really enjoying it. The thick frosting had a nice flavor which counteracted the strong citrus overload nicely. Well worth a try at $7 and big enough for at least two to share after entrees.

 width=

Cask & Larder Red Drum Amber Ale ($9)

 width=

A good 20 ounce beer for $9, I really enjoyed this Red Drum Amber Ale, exclusive to restaurants in this family chain. It’s a nice, light, refreshing beer in a hefty potion. I almost couldn’t finish it just because we ate so much, but it pairs nicely with the barbecue dishes.

Old Fashioned ($10)

 width=

The Old Fashioned tasted a bit watered down, but was enjoyable. I am curious to see what the quality is like once they start serving these in pitchers on Monday.

OVERALL

In review, I was thoroughly impressed with the food and drink quality at The Polite Pig, as well as the attempt to offer a more service-intensive experience at a counter service establishment. We’ll see how it works when Monday rolls around, but until then, I am impressed with what I have had already and am anticipating my next visit. The barbecue was on the same level as (if not better than) Homecomin’ Florida Kitchen, and comes at a much better price (especially on alcohol). In the fantastic run of counter service additions to Disney Springs, this is another viable dining option to throw into the mix next time you are debating what to eat at the former Downtown Disney.

We will offer another review once the restaurant officially opens.

Full List of 15 Walt Disney World Restaurants That Will Offer Mobile Ordering Starting Soon

When the Satuli Canteen opens with Pandora: The World of AVATAR on May 27th, 2017, it will be one of the first restaurants at Walt Disney World to offer mobile ordering through the My Disney Experience app. For those unaware of this new service:

Mobile ordering allows you to pay for meals on-the-go with the My Disney Experience app, bypassing the queue to order in the restaurant. Using the app, you can select any of the menu items, customize them as you wish, and pre-pay for the meal. Arriving at the restaurant, guests will simply tap “I’m Here”, which will notify cast members to prepare the meal. When it’s ready, you will be alerted in the app to pick up the food at a designated service window. Only credit card payments will be accepted for this service, with Dining Plan guests still having to use the normal queue, at least as of right now.

Disney of course tested this service in one form or another over the last few years, including the most notable test at the Backlot Express and Fantasmic at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Mobile ordering will be also apparently be available for the following counter service locations at the four Walt Disney World theme parks and Disney Springs:

  • ABC Commissary
  • Backlot Express
  • Columbia Harbor House
  • Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe
  • D-Luxe Burger

  • Liberty Inn
  • Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe
  • Pinocchio Village Haus
  • Pizzafari
  • Restaurantosaurus
  • Satu’li Canteen
  • Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant

An exact start date for the service at all of these restaurants is still unknown, but we do know that at the very least Satuli Canteen will be using mobile ordering starting in May. More restaurants may be added in the future should the program prove successful

The Polite Pig Opens at Disney Springs on April 10th

As of today, the finishing touches are being added to the newest eatery at Disney Springs; The Polite Pig. Husband and wife chefs James and Julie Petrakis, who have won wide acclaim for their Central Florida restaurants Cask & Larder and The Ravenous Pig, will expand their Swine Family Restaurant Group to Disney Springs with a new fast-casual concept, The Polite Pig, set to open on Monday, April 10. Partnering with the James Beard Foundation-nominated chefs is Brian Petrakis, who owns the popular Orlando eatery Greens & Grille. The partnership unites the Petrakis brothers on a restaurant venture for the first time.

The Polite Pig will feature modern BBQ with Southern sides like a tomato and watermelon salad, mac and cheese and smoked corn with lime butter. There’s even a bar with seven different ways to top your ‘cue, from Layla’s Sweet to Fresno Hot Sauce. Not only that, but you can find a solid selection of craft beers and cocktails, and a bourbon bar with more than 50 selections, from small batch bourbons to a Pappy Van Winkle 23-Year Family Reserve.

The Polite Pig is located in Disney Springs’ Town Center neighborhood. The 5,000-square-foot venue will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., with seating for about 200 guests. The restaurant will employ 80 full-time and part-time employees.

 width=

In in interview done by Disney with the Chefs, they answer some questions about their new restaurant:

Why did you decide to open a restaurant at Disney Springs?
Disney approached us with the idea of opening a fast-casual outpost that would represent the atmosphere and quality of our Winter Park location, The Ravenous Pig. We shared their enthusiasm for bringing a true local restaurant to Disney Springs.

Is the menu similar to The Ravenous Pig and Cask & Larder, your other restaurants in Central Florida?
I would say that the menu is similar in its approach to using quality, seasonal ingredients, with our signature touch. We’ll have Cask & Larder Brewery beers, cocktails on tap and also an extensive Bourbon Bar. And this restaurant will focus a bit more on wood-smoked and grilled items.

Anything you’ll offer at The Polite Pig that will be a signature, or exclusive to that restaurant?
Most of the menu will be exclusive to The Polite Pig: modern barbecue with The Ravenous Pig twist. Like the Southern Pig Sandwich with pulled pork off the smoker, apple slaw, mustard sauce and Duke’s mayo; peel-and-eat shrimp with bourbon-cocktail sauce, and crispy Brussels sprouts with whiskey caramel.

Who will be the chef daily in The Polite Pig kitchen?
We have two of our Ravenous Pig/Cask & Larder veterans at the helm, Jared Thate and Allie Weldon, along with Chef James Petrakis’ guidance and inspiration.

Tell us about the craft beer program.
We will feature four of our beloved Cask & Larder Brewery brews on tap, as well as a couple other Florida/domestic craft beers.

Anything special about The Polite Pig cocktails?
We will feature five house cocktails on tap, including some of our crowd favorites from The Ravenous Pig, such as the Gin and Tonic and Old-Fashioned.

How many seats and describe the décor.
We’ll have 190 seats, and the décor pays homage to the beloved swine of The Polite Pig, as well as antiquity. Whimsical pigs on various adventures can be seen throughout the space, and rustic touches are used for custom featured art pieces. Large faded graphics also adorn the main wall of the space adding to the feel of the long-time family run business.

What’s your favorite dish on The Polite Pig menu?
My favorite appetizer is the Hop Salt Pretzel with beer cheese fondue and IPA mustard. Favorite sandwich: the Salmon BLT with bacon jam, marinated tomato, romaine and aioli. I love that with a side of charred broccoli tossed with herb buttermilk dressing and house granola.

What do you think is the secret to good food?
Using quality seasonal ingredients and taking great care of it by enhancing with smoke/cooking, proper seasoning and passion!

The Polite Pig will officially be opening at Disney Springs on April 10th, 2017.

Casting Parking Lot Closing Soon as Construction Begins on Another Disney Springs Parking Garage

The parking lot of the Walt Disney World Casting building on Buena Vista Drive will close April 1st, 2017 to accommodate the construction of a new Disney Springs parking garage and pedestrian bridge, as we reported several months ago.

 width=

Located next door to the Casting building at Disney Springs, the new structure will contain 3000 additional parking spaces, not just for Disney Springs guests, but also for the Casting building and the nearby Partners (formerly Suntrust) building. In the meantime, those visiting the Casting or Partners building may utilize the 2 and 4 hour parking spaces in the Partners parking lot. Those who work there will be parking in the Cast Services lot by the Team Disney building.

Work on the garage and bridge is slated to be completed in 2019.
