I made a short trip over to Disney’s Hollywood Studios thsi weekend to see what was new and exciting around the park, and honestly, a lot more had changed in a week than I had expected. This trip, we’ll take a look at the Halloween merchandise the Disney Parks will be selling this year (yes, it is mid-August), some new Star Wars merchandise, the latest progress on the Muppets Courtyard overhaul (including the Muppets eatery, PizzeRizzo), and the rather earnest start to the demolition of the Streets of America area.

Oasis Canteen Tries to Dig Up Some Customers

Streets of America Demolition & Muppets Courtyard Overhaul

Much of the New York Street facade has been gutted of anything useful at this point and is just an empty shell.

Speakers that play the Muppets Courtyard music were ripped from the structure, so they now rest on temporary speaker stands behind the Star Wars construction walls.

Gone are posters for the ABC television series The Muppets and back are the original MuppetVision 3-D posters.

Walls and other items are starting to vanish from New York Street, part of the former Streets of America at Disney’s Hollywood Studios as construction continues on the Star Wars themed land. Disney Offering Special Character Meet & Greets for PhotoPass Day on August 19th

On Friday, August 19, the Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort will celebrate the first-ever #DisneyPhotoPassDay, a one-day celebration that will feature special one-day offerings and experiences for guests.

Special Character Experiences At Magic Kingdom Park & Epcot

Enjoy special character experiences at Magic Kingdom Park and Epcot, where Disney PhotoPass photographers will capture your encounter with Pinocchio, Gideon and Foulfellow in Storybook Circus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Foul fellow and Gideon will appear for World PhotoPass Day

At Epcot, a friend or foe will join some of your favorite Disney characters around World Showcase, including Mushu and Mulan in the China Pavilion; Snow White and Dopey in the Germany Pavilion; and the Queen of Hearts, who will join Alice in the United Kingdom Pavilion. Check the My Disney Experience app or the Epcot Times Guide on August 19 for these Disney characters’ schedule.

Disney PhotoPass Day

Complimentary Photo Locations at All Disney Parks & Disney Springs

There will be one location at each of the four theme parks (and Disney Springs) at the Walt Disney World Resort and at both parks at Disneyland Resort where a Disney PhotoPass photographer can capture your special moment. That photo will be available in the My Disney Experience app at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland app at Disneyland Resort to download and share at no charge as part of the #DisneyPhotoPassDay celebration. (Normal My Disney Experience registration is required to access the image). Check out Disney’s PhotoPass Service Facebook page on Tuesday for a list of participating photo locations.

Participate in a Disney PhotoPass Challenge

Complete a Disney PhotoPass Challenge at any of the four parks at the Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort to get a Disney PhotoPass photo for free. All you need to do is get your photo taken by a Disney PhotoPass Photographer at each of the designated challenge locations on August 19. Once you’ve stopped by all of the locations, visit a Disney PhotoPass Sales Center to claim your Disney PhotoPass photo. At the Walt Disney World Resort, participants will receive a voucher for one Disney PhotoPass download. Participants at Disneyland Resort will receive one 5×7 print of a Disney PhotoPass photo. Challenge locations and details will be posted on the Disney’s PhotoPass Service Facebook page on Wednesday.

VIDEO: Steven Tyler’s “Obscene Hand Gesture” Removed From Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster

Have you ever noticed that Steven Tyler’s hand in the Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster pre-show video kind of looks like something that could be considered an “obscene hand gesture”? For the sake of any younger members of our audience, I won’t write the name of it here, but you likely know what I am talking about if you have been on this attraction. Well, Disney has now digitally removed the gesture after 17 years…

Here is how it used to look:

It does seem kind of odd to remove it digitally 17 years later, but enough of the world has noticed it by now. From time to time I’ve ever heard guests yell out the name of the hand gesture, so I can somewhat understand Disney’s decision to keep the attraction family friendly.

What do you think? Is it ridiculous that Disney removed it? Or was it the right decision?

Turkey Legs Are Out and Baked Potatoes In at Hollywood Studios Starting August 2nd

Starting August 2nd, 2016, guests will no longer find turkey legs at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The seasonally operating Toluca Legs Turkey Co. on Sunset Boulevard will be renamed Sunshine Day Cafe and offer a new menu (but will still rarely be open). Meanwhile, the removal of the turkey legs will free up some room at Fairfax Fare to add baked potatoes. Baked potato options will include a one-pound baked potato with tri-tip beef, brown gravy, and white cheddar, as well as the Loaded Fairfax Potato including sour cream, cheddar, and bacon.

Turkey legs were removed from Animal Kingdom as well, but Yak & Yeti’s counter service drink window now sells their own version of the treat. Epcot and Magic Kingdom do currently still offer turkey legs.

A few select counter service menus at Walt Disney World are now showing guests the amount of calories they will find in each dish…

The concept is being tested at a few counter service locations around property, so far spotted at Columbia Harbour House at the Magic Kingdom and Backlot Express at Hollywood Studios.

Menus handed out to guests are also featuring this information.

Will this change the way guests eat at Walt Disney World? Will Disney rollthis out to more locations? Only time will tell.

A Jawa was untying everyone’s shoes using a garbage picker in Launch Bay…

A ton of new limited release phone case and MagicBand designs are available exclusively inside Launch Bay

Path of the Jedi received very permanent looking signage at some point

More and more of these automated pressed penny machines keep showing up, this one by the Frozen Sing-Along Celebration

The ever-changing menu at Min and Bill’s

While Voyage of the Little Mermaid is closed for a few days, all of the connected shops are as well

Trivia, rubber ducks, and hula hoops are out to entertain guests…

More permanent directional signage is being put in place since it will be at least a few years until construction is completed

The signs were filled-in with some additional offerings as not to look like there isn’t much to do here

Loving this new art on the gates at Sunset Ranch Market

More new Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster merchandise was rolled out over the last few weeks

While the bar didn’t happen at the exit of Tower of Terror, they used the empty spaced cleared out for a Engraved ID Tag machine

The Pete’s Dragon preview currently occupies the One Man’s Dream theater

Early box office projections aren’t strong for the movie, and there isn’t much merchandise either

FIRST LOOK: Concept Art Released for Muppets Restaurant at Hollywood Studios

While PizzeRizzo was announced as the replacement for Pizza Planet at Disney’s Hollywood Studios last week, we were not given a look at what the eatery would look like when it opens this Fall. Today, concept art was released of the exterior of the restaurant on the construction walls in the park:

PHOTOS: “Lights, Motors, Action!” Now Being Demolished at Hollywood Studios for Star Wars Land

Over the weekend, work began on removing the viewing area for the former “Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in preperation for the new Toy Story and Star Wars themed land being added to the park.

Lights, Motors, Action! performed for the very last time over 4 months ago, and while the staging for the show was removed some time ago, the 5,000 seat viewing area is just beginning to be torn down.

Disney has not provided a timetable for when demolition in the backlot area of the park will be completed, nor when either the Toy Story or Star Wars themed lands will open.

While the inside of the park is like a war zone as demolition rages on at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the World Drive entrance of the park isn’t faring much better. Even though the new exit from Osceola Parkway is complete, the World Drive entrance road now merges down to one lane before shifting guests over to the right towards the furthest toll plaza booths and away from the construction zone. However, it does offer guests their very best look at the ongoing work to prepare the park for two new themed lands:
