Epcot Re-Imagined – Part 1: The Wonders of Life

Editor’s Note: This series is a look at how one staff member would re-imagine Epcot pavilions. Previous articles in the series can be found here.

As most of you know by now, Epcot, especially Future World, is scheduled to undergo quite extensive and expansive changes over the next few years. While Disney Imagineering is re-imagining the park as we speak, I thought I would re-imagine the park myself.

This series will start in Future World, slowly making its way to World Showcase, as I will re-imagine all current pavilions in both sections. With that being said, let’s start this series by looking at the former Wonders of Life pavilion, now often repurposed as the Festival Center.

The Wonders of Life is my favorite Future World pavilion, past or present. I believe that it is the best attempt and the best representation of the Epcot vision of edutainment and the future. Its message of health and the human body was so well integrated into the pavilion.

Wonders of Life opened to the public on October 19th, 1989, and was sponsored by MetLife. The 100,000 sq. ft. pavilion housed two headline attractions: Body Wars and Cranium Command, as well as several smaller attractions: Frontiers of Medicine, Wonder Cycles, Sensory Funhouse, Coach’s Corner, The Making of Me, Goofy About Health, and The Anacomical Players Theatre. Additionally, there was a store (of course), Well & Goods Limited, and a counter-service restaurant, Pure & Simple. Below, you’ll find videos of the past experiences the pavilion offered, just in case you forgot what they were or never got to see them. This will help set the stage for the changes I will be pitching.

MetLife pulled its sponsorship in 2001, and as a result, the pavilion became a seasonal offering in 2004, eventually closing forever on January 1st, 2007. Instead of doing anything with the pavilion, it was essentially left abandoned. As you are well aware, it didn’t stay abandoned for long.

Later in the year, it was repurposed as the Festival Center for International Food & Wine Festival, eventually also finding use for the Flower and Garden Festival. Any signage was removed, painted over, or covered to hide as reference to what once was. The external ride buildings were abandoned after the four motion simulators of Body Wars were removed.

As it stands today, Wonders of Life is a shell of its past, but that doesn’t mean its glory days are gone forever.

The Wonders Of Life

The question still remains: What would be required to re-imagine Wonders of Life for the present time?

Simply bringing it back to what it used to be cannot happen (as much as us Epcot fanboys would want it to). Instead, in my re-imagining plan, Wonders of Life would undergo a massive transformation so that it can properly enter the 21st Century.

The carnival-style concept will be scrapped. The entire interior will be given a face lift, including a new paint scheme, with blues, reds, purples, greens, and neon outlines. The DNA tower will stay out front, but the archway sign will come back along with the second iteration of the sign which will be located in a planter in front of the walkway to the pavilion.

The pavilion’s new sponsor will either be another life insurance company, like Voya, or it will be a major medical/healthcare or pharmaceutical company like CVS or Pfizer.

ATTRACTIONS

Body Wars: Though the four simulators from the ride have been completely decimated, the queue and loading areas are still somewhat intact. Disney’s patented ATLAS (Advanced Technology Leisure Application Simulator) was used in Star Tours in 1987 and then Body Wars two years later. I have no doubt that Imagineering is up to the task of building a brand new simulator ride system. Along with new simulators, the queue and loading areas would be updated to reflect the changes in the simulators. Instead of updating the original ride film picture, a completely new film will be directed. Disney can even incorporate an IP into the attraction by using Baymax, your personal health care assistant from Big Hero 6. If not, cast relevant, popular actors and actresses to keep interest for the attraction high. All of this will generate big crowds for what was the first-ever thrill ride in Epcot.

Cranium Command: Other than the attraction marquee signage being removed, the queue and show theater haven’t been touched, so it should be easy to renovate. The show ran into a problem as it became time capsule of the height of 1980s comedy due to those who were cast for the attraction. The original actors reached their height in the 1980s, most due to Saturday Night Life, but the cast was never updated from the original, which led to its downfall. The solution for the longevity of the revival of this attraction is simple: continuously update the show cast with relevant actors and actresses. Disney can go even further by internally marketing IPs by using actors and actresses from popular Disney films. If the cast is continually updated, the film stays fresh for newer generations of park guests.

The Making of Me: This show, narrated by comedian/actor Martin Short, was controversial to say the least. The show theatre is still intact, and it will be easy to re-purpose. Instead of keeping with the childbirth them, a new film will be shown, one about the anatomy and development of the human body.  The film’s narrator will be Benedict Cumberbatch, simply because of his Oscar-nominated role as Alan Turing in The Imitation Game. The theater itself will be updated with a new projection and sound system.

Goofy About Health: The show’s original theme about living a healthy lifestyle, is one that should be taught. The problem is that the original show is outdated by 2017 standards, but the show building is still intact. The new show will be a completely new and original 10-minute film, set to style of the classic Goofy cartoons. The physical set will be taken out in place of a giant video screen. The new film, titled “Goofy About Health,” will highlight the importance of living a healthy lifestyle through the clumsy, but lovable Goofy, just like the original.

Sensory Funhouse: The Sensory Funhouse was a great place for kids to roam free. However, it is simply outdated by today’s standards. The re-imagined Sensory Funhouse will be uniquely different and immersive, even more than its predecessor. These new experiences, like VR and digital scent technology, among other things, will truly amaze those who interact.

Coach’s Corner: The way for this smaller attraction to have any staying power is to have relevant professional athletes teach kids. For example, have Mike Trout or Bryce Harper show kids how to hit a baseball, have Russell Wilson and Odell Beckham Jr. show kids how to throw and catch a football, and Steph Curry show kids how to shoot a basketball. If you continue to update the coaching videos with relevant players who kids like, this attraction will continuously have long lines.

Frontiers of Medicine: It is important to inform about the advances that are currently being made in the areas of medicine, and science related to the body. The way to keep this attraction current is to update the different exhibitions within the attraction with touch-screen interactivity. The more that the guests can do within the attraction, the more likely they are to spend more time in that attraction, and hopefully, they will take something away from what they looked at.

Wonder Cycles: There are two ways in which this attraction can be updated: change the destinations people are biking through, and implement new visual technologies, like VR. Those are simple and easy updates that will make the younger demographics enjoy the attraction more while also getting physical exercise.

Anacomical Players Theatre: While this played an integral part in the original pavilion, though it did end several years before the entire pavilion closed, the concept of the original show doesn’t fit the new pavilion concept well enough. Unfortunately, it won’t be coming back in the re-imagining. The show building will be taken down to allow for an expansion of the Sensory Funhouse. While Sensory already takes up a significant part of the pavilion, the expansion of the play area is where the new VR experience will take place, keeping the theme of interactivity.

DINING & SHOPPING

Well & Goods Limited: The pavilion’s flagship store will continue to sell pavilion and Epcot merchandise, but the store’s footprint inside the pavilion will expand. The interior of the store will be completely new and re-designed.

Pure and Simple: The seating area will be renovated and updated. The menu for the counter-service will essentially stay the same, serving a plethora of healthy food choices and of course, the iconic Wonder Waffle and the hot and cold toppings bar. Anything for the Wonder Waffle.

Who knows if this will happen, but it’s fun to think of what could be.

Well, that’s my plan for the Wonders of Life! Next time, I’m going to help Figment out in the Imagination Pavilion…

PHOTOS: Disney Unveils Entire Line of Epcot 35th Anniversary Merchandise

This October, Epcot celebrates its 35th Anniversary at Walt Disney World Resort. To commemorate this milestone occasion, the Disney Parks Merchandise team has created a retro-inspired merchandise collection that captures the essence of a spirited phrase from Epcot’s beginnings, “We’ve just begun to dream.” The Disney Parks Blog spoke with Eric Caszatt, Creative Manager with the Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media Creative Group, about how research played an important role when designing artwork for this collection.

“Many of the artists on my team are long-time Epcot fans,” explained Eric. “We wanted the art to have a distinct vintage feeling, and take its cues from artwork, logos, signage, and in-park graphics found in the early 1980’s. We also referenced actual merchandise released during the first few years of operation. Many products then did not incorporate Disney characters into the artwork with the exception of Figment from the Journey Into Imagination attraction. I’m excited to see several products being released this fall can trace their heritage back to those original items.”

One of the art team’s most noticeable nods to original Epcot is their use of five colors – purple, pink, red, orange, and gold. These colors were prominently featured on a variety of opening year products, from license plates to coffee mugs to jewelry boxes (you can see some of those items in this article). The anniversary artwork has the same colors with more muted tones, further enhancing the vintage look of items.

Eric said some products may include “EPCOT Center” in their designs. The art team used the theme park’s original name when a new item was directly inspired by an original merchandise product such as the youth and women’s “35” T-shirts, or the long sleeve shirt with Spaceship Earth graphic.

Fans of Figment will be delighted to find several items with the loveable purple dragon. Look for a leather backpack, a wristlet, a logo pin, and apparel.

Other products have incorporated the EPCOT Center logo that “symbolizes unity, fellowship and harmony around the world.” Guests will also find original Future World pavilion logos on select products such as a baseball cap or a mystery pin set.

The Epcot 35th Anniversary collection will be released in late September in select locations throughout Epcot. Guests may also find select items via the Shop Disney Parks app once released.

Additional products created especially for October 1, 2017 will be announced soon.

D23 Expo Rumors – A List of Every Announcement Expected for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts

The last month leading to the D23 Expo 2017 has been a crazy one, as there is a larger than usual list of expected announcements for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek to make on Saturday, July 15th at 3pm. Below, we cover what we expect to be announced. While not all of these will likely be “confirmed” come this weekend, they are highly likely to be.

Unlikely rumors that could see announcement on Saturday include the Star Wars Luxury Hotel, Zootopia at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the DVC wing of Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, and a massive expansion of Walt Disney Studios Paris, but the timing for these doesn’t seem right, whether they are going to happen or not.

Stay tuned for updates from the presentation when it begins at 3pm Pacific time today!

CONFIRMED: Ratatouille, Guardians, New China Film, New Table Service Restaurant Coming to Epcot – D23 Expo 2017 News

Bob Chapek has just confirmed that Epcot will be getting a major overhaul. Tom Fitzgerald took the stage to say that the Ratatouille attraction from Disneyland Paris will be coming to the France pavilion at Epcot, as we told you last month.

AT D23 EXPO 2017, DISNEY PARKS CHAIRMAN BOB CHAPEK ANNOUNCES NEW RATAOUILLE ATTRACTION COMING TO EPCOT — Looking ahead to the 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney World, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek announced exciting plans across Epcot to realize the original vision of the park while making it more timeless and relevant than ever before. Patterned after the number one family attraction at Disneyland Paris, Ratatouille will be added in an all-new space in the France pavilion in World Showcase at Epcot.

Confirming news that we first brought to you back in June of 2016, Chapek announced the new E-Ticket attraction based on Guardians of the Galaxy will be coming to Future World in the Universe of Energy pavilion. As a relief to Epcot fans, we see from the concept art that the existing show building will remain intact.

CONFIRMED: Gondolas, Minnie Vans, New DVC Resort Coming to Walt Disney World – D23 Expo 2017 News

Bob Chapek has confirmed at D23 Expo 2017 several stories that we broke over the past months.

First, the gondolas, now called “Disney Skyliner,” were announced. “A brand new transportation system is coming to the Walt Disney World Resort to add even more magic to your future vacation experiences.” Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts said that the Disney Skyliner will soon give guests a bird’s-eye view as they travel between Disney’s Art of Animation, Pop Century, Caribbean Beach resorts and the newly-announced DVC resort, to be named “Disney’s Riviera Resort,” connecting with Disney’s Hollywood Studios and the International Gateway at Epcot. The gondolas of Disney Skyliner will feature favorite Disney characters as shown in the concept art.

AT D23 EXPO 2017, DISNEY PARKS CHAIRMAN BOB CHAPEK ANNOUNCES DISNEY SKYLINER COMING TO WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT — A whole new transportation system called Disney Skyliner will give guests a birds-eye view of Walt Disney World Resort.

The map shown at the presentation looks strikingly familiar to the map we showed when we broke the gondola story back in February 2017.

More information on the gondolas can be found in a number of our articles published since then.

Second up is the Minnie Vans announcement made today that confirms the story we ran two days ago.

AT D23 EXPO 2017, DISNEY PARKS CHAIRMAN BOB CHAPEK ANNOUNCES MINNIE VAN SERVICE COMING TO WALT DISNEY WORLD — An all-new Minnie Van service will provide a point-to-point transportation service at Walt Disney World Resort, giving guests an even more seamless resort vacation from start to finish.

“Since we’re all about exceeding guest expectations and making every aspect of your vacation uniquely Disney, we’re creating a new point-to-point transportation service in a way that only Disney can do,” Chapek said.

The Minnie vehicles will take you everywhere you want to go at the Walt Disney World Resort, and you’ll ride in Minnie’s classic style.

No further details were given on the cost of the service.

And finally, in news we first brought to you all the way back in June of 2016, the 15th DVC resort was announced as “Disney Riviera Resort” and will be located adjacent to the Caribbean Beach Resort.

“We’re thrilled to announce plans for a new Disney Vacation Club property called Disney Riviera Resort coming to Walt Disney World Resort,” Chapek said. “Our Vacation Club Members are among our most loyal fans, and we think that they will love what we have planned, especially the rooftop restaurant that will offer unbelievable views of nighttime spectaculars at both Epcot and Hollywood Studios.”

Estimated to open in fall 2019, this new resort experience is slated to have approximately 300 units spread across a variety of accommodation types.

AT D23 EXPO 2017, DISNEY PARKS CHAIRMAN BOB CHAPEK ANNOUNCES PROPOSED 15TH DISNEY VACATION CLUB RESORT — The next planned development for Disney Vacation Club will be an entirely new resort called Disney Riviera Resort. Estimated to open in fall 2019, this new resort experience is slated to be the 15th Disney Vacation Club property with approximately 300 units spread across a variety of accommodation types. A new skyway transportation system will connect the new resort to other areas on Walt Disney World property.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek Announces Extraordinary Line-up of Experiences Coming to Disney Parks around the Globe

Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and a seventh cruise ship among the experiences coming for guests

Today at D23 Expo 2017, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts announced an extraordinary line-up of brand new attractions and experiences coming to its parks and resorts around the world as it continues to revolutionize the guest experience, starting from before guests even arrive for a Disney vacation to the many memories that last a lifetime.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek welcomed nearly 7,000 fans as he unveiled more than a dozen new experiences coming to Disney parks and resorts and gave a sneak peek at much-anticipated projects in development. Several Imagineers joined the presentation by providing details of the creativity, imagination and innovation in development around the world. Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios John Lasseter also shared his enthusiasm for plans to include a larger Pixar presence at Disneyland Resort.

In addition to the announcement that Fantasmic! will return to Disneyland Park tonight, two nights early in honor of the Expo, fans were treated to a glimpse of the new “Beauty and the Beast” musical production coming to the Disney Dream on Disney Cruise Line, currently in production in Toronto, and a special one-night-only medley of nostalgic entertainment numbers showcasing the heritage of Disney Parks.

“On the heels of the many new and incredibly popular experiences that just debuted this year, the best is yet to come. We have ambitious plans for our parks and resorts around the world,” said Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.  “We’re investing in the guest experience like never before, and we’re doing it all in way that is only possible at Disney!”

From new lodging and transportation options that make getting around more fun, to original storytelling and immersive experiences based on guests’ favorites, Disney continues to provide unparalleled vacation destinations for guests across the globe in even more exciting ways than ever before.

Immersive Theme Park Experiences and Attractions

An Unprecedented First Look at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Fans were elated to hear their Star Wars stories will come to life in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, the newly announced name for the Star Wars-themed lands. Chapek shared exciting new details and a glimpse inside the two anchor attractions, including one that puts guests right in the middle of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance where guests will feel like they are inside a hangar bay on a Star Destroyer. Guests will also have the chance to fly the Millennium Falcon, where each guest is critical to the mission’s success. Chapek also revealed many characters that guests will meet, including BB-8, Chewbacca, Rex and Kylo Ren. Representing the largest single-themed land expansion at 14 acres each, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open in 2019, with the first land debuting at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, then at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando.

Timeless Transformation of Epcot Revealed

Looking ahead to the 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney World, there are grand plans to complete the transformation that started with the debut of New Fantasyland in 2014. Chapek announced exciting plans across Epcot to realize the original vision of the park while making it more timeless and relevant than ever before.

Patterned after the number one family attraction at Disneyland Paris, Ratatouille will be added in an all-new space in the France pavilion at World Showcase.

AT D23 EXPO 2017, DISNEY PARKS CHAIRMAN BOB CHAPEK ANNOUNCES

Epcot will also see the addition of a brand new E-ticket attraction based on the rockin’ and action-packed world of Guardians of the Galaxy, the next step in how guests can encounter these characters at Walt Disney World Resort.

In Future World, a new Green Mission at Mission: SPACE will take guests on a stunning tour around the Earth, and an updated Orange Mission will make the trip to Mars even more spectacular.

Adjacent to Mission: Space will be a new restaurant that will invite guests to travel high above the earth for an unforgettable dining experience.

More Thrills than Ever Planned for Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom

Disney remains at the cutting edge of deeply immersive, creative storytelling that draws guests into new worlds, and it is a legacy that lives on in every new Disney Parks experience.

The first-ever Mickey-themed ride-through attraction, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, will come to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. With a new original story and lovable attraction theme song, this new state-of-the-art ride-through attraction will take guests on a journey inside the wacky and unpredictable world of Disney Channel’s Emmy Award-winning “Mickey Mouse” cartoon shorts using new technologies that transform the flat cartoon world into an incredible dimensional experience.

Chapek also announced that the highest rated attraction at Shanghai Disneyland is coming to Walt Disney World Resort. A thrilling, TRON-themed attraction will be added in a new area near Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom.

Additionally, a new live entertainment theater coming to Main Street, U.S.A., based on the iconic Willis Theater in 1920s Kansas City, will bring world-class entertainment to the world’s most popular park.

Pixar Fun at the Happiest Place on Earth

In addition to announcing the summer 2018 opening of Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Chapek was joined by Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios John Lasseter to unveil plans for Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure, where the pier will take on a brand new look as more favorite Pixar characters and stories come to life, from The Incredibles, to Inside Out to even more Toy Story. Chapek also announced there is more Pixar in store during Pixar Fest at Disneyland Resort. Starting in 2018, this limited-time offering will include a new fireworks spectacular as well as special characters and entertainment moments.

As part of the celebration, the Pixar Play Parade will return to Disneyland Resort – this time at Disneyland Park – and the fan favorite Paint the Night Parade will move to Disney California Adventure, one of Disney’s longest parade routes.

Disney Cruise Line to Nearly Double the Size of its Fleet by 2023

Chapek surprised the crowd by announcing that Disney Cruise Line will add one more ship in its expansion to take family cruise vacations to a whole new level, giving the line a total of seven (yeah, seven!) ships. Joining the other two new ships that were announced just last year, all three new ships will be powered by one of the cleanest-burning fuels available, liquefied natural gas. When all three ships are completed by 2023, Disney Cruise Line will have nearly doubled the size of the fleet.

Immersive Hotel Concepts

Among the announcements were projects that infuse even more exciting experiences for resort hotel guests in ways that are only possible at Disney.

To the delight of fans, Chapek confirmed ambitious plans to create the most experiential concept ever in an immersive Star Wars-themed hotel at Walt Disney World Resort. Dedicated entirely to the galaxy of Star Wars, it will be a one-of-a-kind experience where a luxury resort meets a multi-day adventure in a galaxy far, far away.

Adding to the immersive resort hotel slate, Disney’s Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel at Disneyland Paris will transport guests to the action-packed world of Super Heroes, including Iron Man, The Avengers, Spider-Man and more. Guests will be able to explore the Marvel Universe through its comic art, films, Super Hero costumes and more, displayed in the style of a contemporary art gallery.

Leading up to the July 17 opening of Copper Creek Villas & Cabins, Chapek also announced the proposed 15th Disney Vacation Club property, Disney Riviera Resort, coming to Walt Disney World Resort near Epcot.

Seamless Transportation Options

Completing the immersion so guests never have to leave the story while on a Disney vacation, Chapek announced plans that will make getting around Walt Disney World Resort even more fun.

An all-new Minnie Van service will provide a point-to-point transportation service in a way that only Disney can do, giving guests an even more seamless resort vacation from start to finish.

Additionally, a whole new transportation system called Disney Skyliner will give guests a birds-eye view of Walt Disney World Resort. This brand new system will connect Disney’s Art of Animation, Pop Century and Caribbean Beach resorts, as well as the proposed new Disney Riviera Resort, with Disney’s Hollywood Studios and the International Gateway at Epcot.

Honoring the Heritage of Disney Parks

In a memorable tribute to the legacy of beloved attractions, entertainment and characters, fans enjoyed a special one-time-only performance of entertainment numbers from Disney Parks through the years. Following the return of the Main Street Electrical Parade, Chapek hinted there are even more fan favorites in store from Disney Parks’ storied past.

EDITORIAL: The Good and the Bad of Guardians of the Galaxy Coming to Epcot

Written by Scott Smith

By now everyone has heard the news (at least everyone who reads WDWNT) — Universe of Energy, a pavilion that has long stood in Epcot, is going to be replaced.  Guardians of the Galaxy is moving in to what I feel was one of the integral pillars of what Epcot was. The admittedly-aging attraction, home to Ellen Degeneres and Bill Nye, is to be replaced by an E-Ticket attraction starring Groot and Rocket. What are we to make of this? Are we going to praise Disney for giving us (and Epcot) a sorely-needed new ride, or are we going to be upset that some random IP-du-jour is taking up residence in a pavilion wherein the new attraction will have no relation to the pavilion’s original intent? Well…it’s a complicated issue. And honestly, I don’t know how to feel.

I’m not going to laugh at anyone who’s upset. I fully understand their thinking. Nor am I going to say anyone who’s excited is “stupid” or “a problem”, but this is a big deal. It’s a fundamental shift from what Epcot is, was, and has been. Not simply because it’s an Intellectual Property of the Walt Disney Company does it represent a fundamental shift. That’s because the IP in the form of Finding Nemo over at the Seas, or The Lion King at The Land, were changes that fit the mold of the pavilions and preserved their original conceptual spirit. Guardians, on the other hand, is a property that has nothing to do with Energy, will not have anything to do with Energy, and will completely encompass and erase everything was there before (with the exception, possibly, of the show building itself – but this is likely for cost reasons and nothing else).

Let’s start at the beginning. What WAS Epcot? What is it NOW? Back in the day, young Scott was a small, bullied nerd. Being very timid, he didn’t love thrill rides, but loved the immersion and escapism that Walt Disney World offered. Epcot was an amazing place. The attractions were perfect for me. They were creative, imaginative, and immersive, and the thrill was in the design and theme, not in speed or drops (I have since learned to love roller coasters and other rides of the sort, I’m just recounting my history here). I quickly fell in love with Epcot, as many others did. What I may not have realized at the time, was that there was something underneath it all, a whole other level, that made Epcot greater than just its collection of attractions and pavilions. What Epcot was, at its core, was a bold statement about a future, a really-for-real future, that we actually could achieve, for the betterment of society. Transportation, energy, the land, the sea, the power of our own imaginations — all of this would be harnessed to make an optimistic future become reality. As I said before, I was extremely timid and scared as a young boy, and even to this day I suffer from anxiety and depression. While I was there, Epcot had an amazing effect on me: it made me not afraid. It made me feel like tomorrow was going to be ok, that the future would be great, and that I didn’t need to be afraid of what was to come. Whether it was Figment, or Horizons, or “Tomorrow’s Child,” Epcot allowed me to escape the anxiety and depression of my everyday existence and for once I could be happy, and not afraid.

Unfortunately, as we have seen, it didn’t stay that way. As the future was born each day, Epcot had trouble keeping up. There are plenty of places to lay the blame, but that’s not what this article is about. As time went on, missteps happened, some larger than others, and Epcot fell behind. Wonders of Life became not so wonderful after it was essentially abandoned, Mission Space never landed (pardon the pun), and Imagination was one disaster after another.  Innovations had dozens of changes of various quality, like a rudderless ship trying to find its way. The amazing layout of the park made it ideal for various seasonal festivals, and thus the Food & Wine Festival in the fall and the Flower & Garden Festival in the spring became the main driving force of the park (and a huge cash cow for the Parks and Resorts division), so much so that they’ve been replicated in DCA and extended to additional seasons at Epcot. The culmination of all of this was an Epcot that struggled to stay relevant, as questionable management decisions and changing tides of society came and went.

In the beginning, Epcot was an amazing achievement that inspired almost all who visited, but as Epcot approaches its 35th birthday, what is it now? In my opinion, it’s merely just a theme park with several fun experiences, no longer inspiring guests, but more likely disappointing them, due to the lack of spirit resulting from the lack of a cohesive vision for the park. So, what’s the solution?

I wanted a return to the optimism, a return to the time when Epcot made me feel better, and brave enough to look forward to tomorrow.  As Imagineering has shown us in some of its greatest creations, whether it be Pirates 50 years ago or Soarin’ more recently, IPs are not a pre-requisite for an attraction to be “fun” and well-liked by guests.  And let’s not lie, “fun” is first and foremost what the “average” park visitor seeks. It wouldn’t have been difficult for the company to keep Epcot updated and relevant, while keeping each pavilion alive in spirit and continuing to make people feel good about the future. If IPs were a mandate, Disney could have followed the example of The Seas and The Land with tie-ins that made sense. We could have had Hiro and Baymax teach people about energy (Big Hero 6 was a wonderful supporter of science). The emotions of Inside Out had the perfect seat from which to teach us about the body in Wonders of Life. Figment and Imagination had literally endless possibilities.

But Disney decided not to go this route. I’m not going to argue the fact that the Guardians of the Galaxy have become very popular. No question, they sell merchandise, but instead of holding true to Epcot’s ideals, the bean-counters are only concerned with what sells. You cannot tell me it “fits” or whatever line Bob Chapek is feeding us. A fake Polaroid of some kid posing as Peter Quill, who supposedly visited Epcot, is ludicrous. This attraction will have nothing to do with energy, so the pavilion is completely sacked. It certainly doesn’t fit with any sort of optimistic future, since it has nothing to do with Earth or our everyday lives at all. Yes, they’re relatable characters, but so what? Epcot was about improving our OWN lives, making OUR future better. This is science fantasy, something that would be awesome in the Studios but something never done in Epcot. Every single attraction in Future World — even something as detached as Soarin’ — had to do with OUR lives and OUR world. Guardians of the Galaxy is nothing of the sort. By putting this in Future World, management and the bean counters are opening a Pandora’s box, heading full steam ahead down a slippery slope of removing something and putting literally anything in it’s place. Who needs a transportation pavilion? Just put in Cars and sell toys. Animals live on “The Land” so just put some live-action Lion King characters in the boat ride. I might be exaggerating here, but those make as much sense if not more that what Disney is planning. With this addition, there is no more optimistic future; it is gone, given away to the bean counters. Chapek can give whatever lip service he wants, but Guardians does NOT fit with Epcot’s founding ideals, and anyone who says it does is simply feeding us a line of bull. No more will Epcot entertain us while teaching us we can be better. It may entertain us, but certainly not the way it did before. Future World will not be a beacon of hope for a better society. Sure, some of that will remain, but the resulting disjointedness from this random placement will stick out like a sore thumb, and only pave the way for each part of Epcot to be replaced with whatever movie is popular. Epcot, as so many of us knew it and loved it, is gone. It sucks.

Not to leave everyone depressed, let’s look at what we are getting in exchange for our beloved Epcot. We’re getting a brand new, multi-layered, E-Ticket experience. Let’s also not forget that the Guardians of the Galaxy are some awesome characters, and both movies were excellent. They brought back the fun of the rag-tag science fantasy movie, something that was lost in the Star Wars prequels. The characters, no matter what “species” they are, were human in their emotions and experiences. Frankly, I love them. As a theme park fan, how can I be upset about this? Just think about this: Disney took Avatar, a really overrated, boring movie, and created an attraction worthy of praise. Imagine what they could do with GOOD movies! They did their best overlaying Tower of Terror in DCA, and the results are fun. So think about combining those characters with a BRAND NEW ride — it’s exciting! With a new project of this caliber being added to Epcot, it very well could bring in a whole new generation of children, who will then about Epcot as I did as a child. What if this project remains a one-off, and with the increased popularity and concomitant attendance increase, Disney decides to fork over the money for a high-tech Figment ride? Unlikely, but possible.

Like I said, the Epcot of our nostalgic memories won’t be coming back. It’s easy to be upset by this news. It is inevitable that something new will take its place. Personally, I don’t think Disney is gave even a shred of consideration to Epcot’s theme or optimistic message about the future when they decided to put Marvel in the park. The best we can do at this point is hope that it has a positive effect on the rest of the park. If the Seas pavilion stays on-message (as it is currently doing, even with Nemo there), the kids who come to ride Guardians might also visit that pavilion and discover more about our oceans. If Spaceship Earth continues to champion communication (and hopefully get a bit of love to make its message even more clear), perhaps those who stop to ride it on their way to Guardians next door will be inspired, just as the Irons version did for me. I’m not trying to sound like an apologist, and am certainly not making excuses for Disney’s attempts to make it fit, but… as a theme park fan, a lover of rides that take me out of the real world… how can I be mad at this? What if instead decided to keep the theme of Energy, but simply removed all the dinosaur animatronics and replaced them with screens? That would be far worse the scrapping the whole thing for a new E-Ticke. There could be dozens of Imagineers working hard to take those children with Groot lunch boxes, and fans who follow the comic books, and even those who’ve never seen the Guardians films, out of the real world and on a fantastic journey. That’s… well, that’s pretty darn exciting.

What’s my point? I guess, writing it out like this, my point is that there are both upsides and downsides, that those who are mad and those who are excited are both right, and there’s not really much we can do at this point anyway. This marks an end of an era for Epcot, full stop. A lot of us are losing something we treasured. New stuff is coming though, and hopefully it will be really fantastic. As opinions flare, whether on social media or face to face, the situation is more complicated than one side being right or wrong. Don’t laugh at people that are upset, because you don’t know what Epcot meant to them. If you’re happy that this brand new attraction is coming, just remember this changes a huge dynamic that has been in place for 35 years — even when Epcot wasn’t that great. New stuff is awesome but there is often a trade-off, and that can hurt. Likewise, if you’re feeling sad about what has been lost, please understand that unfortunately these things must happen. While we’d all love an Epcot museum, Epcot the theme park can’t be it. In the end, if these rides are well done, they’ll make lots of magic for a new generation, and thatt could inspire them to do great things. New projects are exciting, but just because someone’s cheering doesn’t mean that they’re happy at the demise of old Epcot. It’s a complicated scenario, but we’re all on this Spaceship Earth together.

Epcot’s New Mission: Space Will Launch in August, Booster Seats & Lower Height Requirement Likely Coming

Mission: SPACE at Epcot has had a tumultuous history. It opened to great fanfare in 2003 as the most realistic space simulation on the planet, a new-age thrill ride the likes of which the world had never seen before, but after being too intense for many (to put it politely), they were forced to introduce two different “teams”, or versions of the ride in 2006. While Orange Team Mission kept the original version intact, Green Team Mission used the same film with a much gentler ride profile that was minus any g-forces. It’s like watching Mission: Space from a rocking chair in my opinion.

New attraction poster for Mission: Space at Epcot

Announced over the weekend at the D23 Expo, in just a few weeks, guests will be able to enjoy new adventures at Mission: SPACE – an updated Orange Mission and a brand-new Green Mission.

The updated Orange Mission will make an even more visually stunning trip to Mars thanks to a new film animated by the folks over at ILM, while the all-new Green adventure will allow guests to blast off for a completely different orbital adventure around planet Earth. A new film with the gentler motion of Green in mind seems like a good idea, as the gentler version of the original just never really seemed to click with guests.

From what we are hearing, not only will Green boast a completely new mission, but booster seats should be made available so that Disney can lower the height requirement for this version of the ride. Disney has continually said they are trying to make Epcot more family friendly in this overhaul, and this Mission: Space update certainly screams that.

Among other changes expected are a reworked queue and a completely new pre-show (at least for Green Mission). It is unclear if Gary Sinese has returned for the new pre-show, but both rides should have their own unique versions.

Disney is stating Mission: Space will re-open this August at Epcot, although internet sources are still claiming it will be this October. I guess we’ll have to wait and see which of those is correct…
