Epcot International Festival of The Arts Returning in 2018

It seems as though the Epcot International Festival of the Arts will return in January 2018.

 width=

No exact dates are available yet, but Disney has confirmed that the event is returning starting in the first month of next year. It is no secret that the Festival exceeded all expectations, proving to be quite popular with guests in 2017, the inaugural season.

It is rumored that the event will take place daily, not just on weekends in 2018, but Disney has made no announcement as of yet.

For an overview of the entire event (so you can start planning for 2018), please check out our exhaustive review and guide.

Off to Neverland! – Epcot Attractions and Lands that Never Happened (Part 1)

Welcome back to Neverland! We will continue our tour of Disney’s newest theme park, Neverland. If you are joining us for the first time on this tour, welcome! If you didn’t join us on our last tour back in February, you can go back and check out our inaugural visit. What is Neverland, you ask? Here’s the explanation from our first visit:

Neverland is a fictional place in Disney’s “Peter Pan,” where pirates rule the seas, mermaids lurk the waters, fairies are real, and you never grow up. It’s a place of “never.” For a moment, let’s pretend that it is the year 2078. In this time period, Disney has just announced plans for their 6th theme park which would be 500 acres – their biggest park yet. This park would be called Neverland. This park is filled with shows, rides, concepts, ideas and many other things that Disney had plans for, but never fully put into effect. Let me be your VIP tour guide and show you what would be in this fictional Disney park of things that have “never” happened.

On today’s tour, we will journey across the world and explore lost continents. Pack your suitcase, get your passport, and buy your plane ticket, because we’re heading to the Land of Forgotten Countries! This particular tour will be separated into multiple parts to ensure you don’t get jet lag!

Land of Forgotten Countries (World Showcase, EPCOT)

Planned poster for the ‘future site’ of Israel

  • ISRAEL PAVILION- In 1980, the State of Israel entered into a contractual agreement to be officially sponsored in the World Showcase. The pavilion would feature a center courtyard with a menorah, as well as artifacts from the Jewish Museum in Tel Aviv. Also planned was an open-air restaurant. Think of the Holy Land, but on a much smaller scale. It wasn’t built because of threatened boycotts and security issues arising in Israel. However, from 1999-2001, the Millenium Pavilion featured an Israel Exhibit and had a simulator-type ride called “Journey to Jerusalem,” which was a virtual tour of historic holy sites.
  • COSTA RICA PAVILION- Below is a model of the planned pavilion for Costa Rica. The pavilion would feature a crystal palace shown below, which looks very similar in design to the Crystal Palace Restaurant at Magic Kingdom. The palace was to be the pavilion’s main centerpiece. In addition to the palace, there were to be waterfalls, exotic animals, and gardens similar to the nation itself. Food and shopping locations would have had a tropical vibe as well. There were also plans for an arts and crafts area inside the palace.

  • EQUATORIAL AFRICA PAVILION- This pavilion was actually in the final stages of  development before being cancelled. Even shows were already planned out. However, due to a lack of funding owing to the lack of an African nation sponsor, the construction never began. Why Disney has never revisited the idea, no one knows. The two pictures below show concept art and a map of the future land.  The ‘Equatorial’ in Equatorial Africa refers to the group of African countries that lie along the equator and to which the pavilion would have been themed. The pavilion was also known as the “African Nations pavilion” or the “Africa pavilion” and the pavilion would have been located between China and Germany. The main attraction would have been a theater show called the ‘Heartbeat of Africa.’ The entrance to the area would feature a larger-than-life African treehouse. There is so much more to this pavilion, I could write an entire article just on this topic, but our tour must move on.

  • IRAN PAVILION- Before Epcot was constructed, this pavilion was proposed. Unfortunately, we have never seen any concept art for this pavilion, so it’s possible the concept never reached full planning stages yet and was only an idea created by Disney Imagineers. It would have featured a dark ride that would explore different parts of Persian history and have a shopping area that would be based on a bazaar. Because of the upheaval after the Iranian Revolution, the idea was scrapped.
  • PUERTO RICO PAVILION- Details are vague for this pavilion. We do not know much because, although it was ‘technically planned’, at some point, the Walt Disney Company decided to announce that the idea was completely false. Even though the company said it was false, the idea was under investigation and was indeed proven to have been ‘in the works’ at some point. In 2014, rumors arose that Epcot would finally see this pavilion because of some new agreements between Puerto Rico and the U.S., but turns out this speculation was only for a booth at Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival.
  • SOVIET UNION (RUSSIA) PAVILION- Based on the Kremlin in Moscow, the pavilion would feature a replica of St. Basil’s Cathedral. Two rides that were planned would be a sled journey through the Russian scenery, and a ride-through attraction based on Russia’s famous folk tale The Fool and the Fish.  The story is about Ivan, a young fool who spares the life of a fish, specifically a pike. It just so happens that the pike is magical, and in return, Ivan is granted wishes from the pike. The plans were scrapped when the Soviet Union was dissolved. Below were two concept art images for this proposed land.

  • SPAIN PAVILION-Two attractions for this pavilion included a dark ride through Spain highlighting Spanish culture, and a film (likely a Circle-Vision 360) about the nation’s landmarks, showcasing the beauty of the country. The pavilion would have also featured a waterside restaurant on the World Showcase Lagoon. Unfortunately, the plans got scrapped, most likely due to budget reasons and a lack of sponsorships. Below are two images confirming the concept for the land.

The description for Spain reads, “Take a spectacular journey through Spain by film to little known and out of the way vacation Edens. A ride attraction captures the country’s passionate heritage and spirit in her arts. In a waterside restaurant, indulge in tapas, or Spanish-style finger food – a blend of varied ingredients suitable to simple tastes. And browse the market places of striking contrast, from pueblo village to aristocratic opulence.”

Planned Poster for ‘future site’ of Spain. “Discover the Golden Land of Segovia, Cervantes and Picasso… Discover SPAIN.”

  • SWITZERLAND PAVILION- The Switzerland pavilion would actually have featured a Swiss mountain, containing a version of the Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction from Disneyland. We did a huge write-up on this planned pavilion back in December of 2014 including an entire book of concept art! width=
  • UNITED ARAB EMIRATES PAVILION- The UAE pavilion was an idea created by Imagineers, but never matured beyond an idea. The pavilion would feature a ‘flying carpet’ ride that would be a simulation where you are flying on a magic carpet (though nothing like The Magic Carpets of Aladdin at Magic Kingdom).
 width=

  • VENEZUELA PAVILION- For the same reason, this idea never got off of the drawing board. In this pavilion, there would have been an aerial tram ride through a Venezuelan rainforest as pictured below.

This will conclude our tour of the Land of Forgotten Countries for now. If you enjoyed this article and want more, stay tuned for more about the ancient past of Epcot when our tour continues…

PHOTOS: Flower and Garden Festival 2017 Merchandise; Egg Hunt Returns to Epcot with New Characters

The start of the 2017 Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival is only a few weeks away. Today, Disney shared a sneak preview of new products created this annual springtime celebration that returns to Walt Disney World Resort from March 1 to May 29.

 width=

This year, guests will find new artwork from Disney Design Group including stylized images of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and pastel-colored, geometric patterns featuring Figment.

 width=

 width=

New merchandise will include apparel, headware, home décor, and souvenirs. Five Dooney & Bourke handbags will be released, including, by popular demand, a larger sized Weekender bag. A Shellie May plush bear dressed in gardening attire and three Figment-inspired garden decorations will also be offered.

 width=

For Disney pin collectors, look for a limited release logo pin along with several limited edition pins. The four-pin, limited edition pin set features Disney characters such as Orange Bird or Judy Hopps from Disney’s “Zootopia.”

 width=

Annual Passholders will find several unique products such as apparel for women and men; a TERVIS wine goblet; a collectible coin; and a limited edition pin. For the first time, there is also a limited release logo pin created only for Passholders. In order to purchase these items, Passholders must present a valid Annual Pass at time of purchase.

 width=

Disney also announced the return of the Egg-stravaganza to Epcot. From March 1 to May 29 (or while supplies last), you can search for special hidden “eggs” themed to Disney characters. Maps and stickers can be purchased for $5.99, plus tax. To participate, visit Pin Central – Future World, Disney Traders at the entrance to World Showcase, or World Traveler at International Gateway.

The event will also return to Disneyland Resort, but no details are available as of yet.

You can look for these items and more at the Festival Center located in Future World between Mission: SPACE and the Universe of Energy. The location will have expanded operating hours during opening week, Wednesday, March 1 to Sunday, March 5. During the remaining weeks of the Festival, the center will be open Friday through Sunday. Guests may also find additional products in select merchandise locations throughout Epcot.

RUMOR: Skyway Gondola Transportation System Between Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios to be Constructed

This one is a bit wacky, but according to recent permits filed by the Walt Disney World, it seems that a Skyway-type gondola transportation system may be installed to transport guests between Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios (as well as a few resort hotels in between).

If you think Skyway systems are out of date, think again. New York City still utilizes such a system to and from Roosevelt Island and has proposed an additional system for the future, seen here.

If you think Skyway systems are out of date, think again. New York City still utilizes such a system to and from Roosevelt Island and has proposed an additional system for the future, seen here.

If the buildings on the permits are indeed for stations, the system would include stops at Epcot’s International Gateway, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, a shared station at the Pop Century and Art of Animation Resorts, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. See our illustration below:

The rumored route, stops and turns of Walt Disney World's new Skyway system.

The rumored route, stops and turns of Walt Disney World’s new Skyway system.

It’s no secret that Disney will not build a monorail expansion for cost and efficiency reasons, so would they build this instead? The timing seems right with the massive expansion work at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and soon-to-commence at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort. The stations and turns are in spaces not currently used by any other structures or infrastructure.

The original Skyway attraction once operated at the Magic Kingdom park from 1971 until 1999. This new system would likely include much larger, enclosed gondolas, however (similar to the New York system pictured at the top of the article). It would be nice to have the Skyway back at Walt Disney World, in name at least. A modern homage to a classic Disney attraction that would now serve a real transportation purpose for many a guest.

We will keep you in the loop as more information on this rumored project becomes available.

Our thanks to the group of Disney World fans who pieced together this information!

REVIEW: Croissant Doughnut at Epcot Gets More Ridiculous with Pastry Cream Filling

As part of the Epcot International Festival of the Arts, the Refreshment Port in World Showcase has decided to kick-it up a notch on their already beloved croissant doughnut.

 width=

For a little extra, guests can acquire the croissant doughnut filled with pastry cream, covered in icing and colored pearls.

 width=

It’s a real work of art, no?

 width=

I generally love the croissant doughnut (or cronut, the term Disney is not legally allowed to use for the treat), but this was something far more special. As much as I enjoy the cinnamon sugar topping, the combination of the pastry icing and filling with the perfectly-cooked, flaky croissant doughnut made for an even more amazing treat. I will warn you that it is very sweet, but I thought it was perfectly put together. Obviously, don’t eat the filling all in one bite, but be sure to spread a little onto each morsel of the snack for optimal enjoyment.

I’m not telling you that you should get this on your next trip to Epcot, I am telling you that you have to. If I had to pick one theme park snack to be trapped on a dessert island with for the rest of my life, this is the one. Oh, and it makes for nice photos too, if that’s important to you.

If you want one of these, you will need to hurry as it will only be offered during the duration of the Epcot International Festival of the Arts, running on weekends (Friday through Monday) now through February 20th.

It’s a Zoo Out There

 width=

A slew of new open edition pins were released recently, including Zootopia and compact mirror designs.

 width=

 width=

There is no actual mirror in these pins, but the silver works sort of like one. I don’t know, these seem kind of dumb to me…

 width=

 width=

This one actually has a mirror, which makes sense.

 width=

The last piece of history pin for 2016 was 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, so I had to have it.

It has been out for a few weeks now, but the new Mickey Mouse Bubble Glow Wand is proving popular with guests.

 width=

And now, some ducks.

 width=

Security at the Speed of a Sloth

 width=

Since December, the security screening at Epcot has been a disaster, with everyone going through the metal detectors. Guests with bags now have their bag inspected while they go through the detector, which is some cases takes 1-2 minutes per guest. I hate to say this, but the Universal Orlando process where bags go through a screening machine (I believe Disneyland Paris has this as well) works a million times better than this. Safety is obviously important, but it shouldn’t take anyone 30 minutes to get into a park.

 width=

Epcot turnstiles are often mess as well, as never quite enough seem to be open at peak times. The annual pass holder entry lines are a mixed bag, more often than not being longer that the regular lines, especially in January.

BREAKING: Massive Power Outage Shuts Down Most Epcot Attractions

Most attractions at Epcot are temporarily closed due to a power outage problem at the park.

 width=

There are no further details available at this time, but it appears that nearly every attraction in the park is closed.

UPDATE: Power was restored before 9pm last night, but some attractions did not reopen. Normal park operations did resume today, February 1st.
