PHOTO REPORT: Epcot 8/31/16 (Haunted Mansion, Mosquito Prevention, New Stairs, ETC.)

Today, we take a short trip to a rainy Epcot to see what’s new and exciting in our latest photo report (and no, Haunted Mansion in the title is not a mistake):

Steps Toward Security

Work was finally completed on the new emergency stairs at the Epcot Monorail station. New safety protocols have required these additions at many of the monorail stations around Walt Disney World property.

ZIKA/Mosquito Prevention

I found two of the complimentary bug repellent locations during my rainy night visit to Epcot. This first one is on the bridge from China to the Refreshment Outpost.

Another was spotted near the Agent P sign-up kiosk between Future World and World Showcase.

PHOTOS: Disney World Rolls Out Free Mosquito Repellent to Combat Zika Virus

On Saturday, we told you about the introduction of complimentary bug repellent at the Disney World theme parks and Disney Springs to help combat the Zika Virus presence in central Florida. On Sunday, Disney rolled out the program resort wide. Here’s how it works…

Mosquito Prevention Kiosk in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom

Mosquito Prevention Kiosk in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom

These kiosks are located all around the parks and Disney Springs. Cast members are handing pamphlets out to guests about mosquito prevention and then invite them to apply repellent to themselves. On Sunday, cast were tallying the number of guests using the program. By mid-afternoon, one kiosk at Disney Springs informed us that they already had over 50 guests who had taken advantage of the program.

Guests do not actually receive anything to keep with them, but they can stop at these kiosks and apply the repellent to themselves. All resort rooms at Walt Disney World have similar bottles of repellent placed in them by housekeeping. Guests do in fact get to keep these bottles distributed to their guest room.

It is unknown for how long Walt Disney World will offer the repellent, but it will likely be until the threat of Zika is gone from the Central Florida area.

Children Now Require Biometric Finger Scan to Enter Walt Disney World Theme Parks

Children under the age of 10 have never been required to scan a finger when entering a Walt Disney World theme park, something required of all ticket holders over that age for many years at the Vacation Kingdom of the World. Starting just last week, children under age 10 now are required to have their fingerprint scanned to enter the Walt Disney World theme parks, water parks, and DisneyQuest.

Disney-MagicBand

A guest relations cast member we spoke to over the weekend confirmed the changes after 3 separate reports were sent to us by WDWNT readers.

The change is reportedly part of the continuing effort to fight ticket fraud and Walt Disney World Resort ticket resales. Child tickets in the past would have no fingerprint associated with them, nor would they require photo ID, so it would have been very easy to transfer tickets between guests under the age of 10.

Disney has made no official statement on the new policy beyond the instructions given to front gate cast members at their theme parks.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Tour “The Living Seas” Private Lounge at Epcot

The Living Seas name may have gone away 10 years ago, but it lives on in a secluded space inside of the Seas with Nemo and Friends pavilion at Epcot. Through a set of nondescript doors near the entrance to the Coral Reef Restaurant, lies the passageway to an exclusive lounge, now only open to private events.

The lounge, like many others, was incorporated into the design of the original pavilion to host the sponsor company of the pavilion, which is 1986 was United Technologies.

The lounge offers grand views into the main aquarium, possibly my favorite views of the tank I have ever experienced, but the views of the old ride tunnels and the large observation area ccross the way might have something to do with that.

The interior of the lounge itself doesn’t scream “The Living Seas” to me, but it is a pleasant atmosphere regardless thanks to the big open windows into the tank.

You can see the original windows from the old ride clearly from here. These were of course covered when the ride was converted into the Seas with Nemo and Friends in 2006.

The clear piano is likely the most memorable piece inside of the lounge, often the subject matter of most guest pictures from inside of the space. The other options are strange metal fish, so this wasn’t much of a competition.

We also have a quick video tour of the space:

I don’t know about you, but this is one of my favorite private event spaces in all of Walt Disney World. If you get the chance to rent this space or attend an event here, do it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go listen to the old Seabase Alpha music loop on repeat…

BREAKING: The Sum of All Thrills and Stormstruck Closing; Goodbye Innoventions at Epcot

On September 14th, 2016, the Sum of All Thrills and Stromstruck exhibits inside Innoventions at Epcot will close.

PE3_8404

Innoventions West exhibits were closed last year and some of the space was utilized for meet and greet areas for Baymax and Joy & Sadness. Colortopia, the newest Innoventions exhibit to open, will remain open at this time, but will close whenever the contract with Glidden concludes. Disney has stated they will make an announcement about the future of the Innoventions space at a later date.

All signs point to a massive overhaul of Future World at Epcot coming in the next few years, and those plans may include the demolition/repurposing of the Innoventions East and West buildings, thus why no replacement exhibits are being added.

Epcot’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” Ride will be a Roller Coaster Attraction

I wish I had better news, but it seems the replacement of the Universe of Energy at Epcot in favor of a “Guardians of the Galaxy” ride is indeed imminent. Today, we are finding out more about what exactly guests may find instead of a slow-moving ride through Dinosaurs and film clips when the blockbuster MARVEL property breaks into the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (if that even still means that anymore).

Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy

Rumor has it that the Guardians of the Galaxy ride at Epcot will be a roller coaster attraction. This attraction would already be historic as it would be the first Future World attraction to break way from the fundamental “edutainment” theme the park has had for nearly 35 years now. However, it could now be an even more profound statement as it would be the very first roller coaster in the park’s history and only the 6th ride that could be categorized under “thrill”.

Apparently the ride would feature both elaborate scenes and a long roller coaster portion, very similar to the rumored plans for a Captain America roller coaster once-slated for the new land at Disney California Adventure. The existing Universe of Energy building and attraction would be demolished.

The one interesting wrinkle is that the words “MARVEL” nor “Guardians of the Galaxy” appear in any renderings of the attraction that exist so far. This is of course a product of the legal restrictions still in place on Walt Disney World by the parameters of the MARVEL/Universal Studios theme park deal.

Sources seem convinced that this attraction will be announced before the end of 2016, possibly by Bob Chapek at the upcoming Destination D event at Walt Disney World. With that being said, it does sound like the project has been approved and will be moving forward barring any unseen problems.

RUMOR: Guardians of the Galaxy Attractions for Disney Parks to Be Announced at San Diego Comic Con?

I wasn’t sure if posting this was such a good idea based on how often we might scare Disney out of announcing things, but current rumbling indicate that San Diego Comic Con might be the time and place for the announcement of the Guardians of the Galaxy attractions at Disney theme parks.

Guardians

If the rumors are true (or if Disney decides to go through with it), the MARVEL Studios panel may be used to announce a Guardians of the Galaxy overlay of the Tower of Terror attraction at Disney California Adventure and a Guardians of the Galaxy ride to replace the Universe of Energy at Walt Disney World’s Epcot.

The reasoning for the announcement at SDCC is that work will commence on the new additions by the Fall, far before another D23 Expo arrives in Anaheim next summer. In fact, Disney would like the new Guardians-themed Tower of Terror to be open by then.

The cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is slated to be at the panel, making it an opportune moment to promote the movie and possibly announce that they are coming to Disney Parks.
