REVIEW: Joffrey’s Coffee “Revive” Opens in the Magic Kingdom, Mission to S’mores Pays Homage to Classic Ride

For months, we have been watching the construction of the Joffrey’s Coffee “Revive” kiosk in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom. This morning, the coffee and pastry shop opened with the park.

The kiosk is the first for the Magic Kingdom, with Joffrey’s operating several kiosks at other Walt Disney World theme parks. It’s sign is an homage to the old Tomorrowland attraction marquees of the 70’s and 80’s.

Exclusive to this location is Mission to S’mores, an homage to the Mission to Mars attraction that once stood in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom. Mission to Mars was open from 1976 until 1992, replacing the instantly dated Flight to the Moon and then closing to make way for the ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter (which would eventually debut in 1995).

The signage for the drink even looks like the old Mission to Mars logo!

I ended up being the only guest running to this at park opening (what a surprise that no one else wanted to rope drop coffee, but went to Space Mountain instead). As the first guest ever at Revive, I was given my drink for free!

So how was the Mission to S’mores? It was delicious! It wasn’t overly sweet, but instead was a latte with just enough of a marshmallow flavor for you to get your caffeine fix and not feel terrible about yourself afterwards (like some of the dessert drinks at Starbucks). I will be ordering this again for sure.

It is available hot or iced. I ordered it iced because it’s Orlando in March…

Other than this specialty beverage, the Revive kiosk also offers a wide array of coffee drinks (all non-alcoholic at the Magic Kingdom, but you’ll find the alcoholic versions at other parks), as well as pastries.

 width=

Pastries are of the usual Joffrey’s kiosk variety, including the giant doughnuts, croissants, muffins, and cookies.

Overall, the stand is a great addition to the park. With Casey’s Corner already discontinuing breakfast, it’s nice to have another location for pastries at breakfast time. I also really enjoy Joffrey’s coffee and prefer it to Starbucks, so I’m excited to have another good coffee drink location in the park (other than the Auntie Gravity’s coffee float).

Revive by Joffrey’s Coffee is now open daily at the Magic Kingdom, opening with the park every morning.

Celebrating 50 Years of Pirates of the Caribbean with 50 Fun Facts

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the original Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Disneyland (tomorrow, March 18th), I have decided to celebrate the occasion with 50 fun facts you may or may not know about the rides and the movie franchise. The list will countdown to what I think are the coolest facts about Pirates of the Caribbean, from fifty down to one.

50 Fun Facts about Pirates of the Caribbean

 width=

#50: Pirates of the Caribbean at the Disneyland Resort was the very last ride Walt personally oversaw before he dies in December 1966.
#49: Original plans for the attraction actually were for a wax museum of famous pirates. It became an audio-animatronic ride after the great success of Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln and “it’s a small world”.
#48: In the Disneyland version, there is a total of 122 audio-animatronic figures, which includes 68 humans and 54 animals.
#47: On the facade at Disneyland, there are the initials “WD” and “RD” carved into the wrought iron fence on the balcony upstairs, where Walt’s apartment would have been. The “WD” stands for Walt Disney and the “RD” stands for his brother Roy Disney.
#46: Staying on that topic, the “Disneyland Dream Suite” above the Pirates attraction at Disneyland was actually supposed to be a 3,000 square-foot apartment for Walt Disne and his family. It didn’t get finished before Walt died, and Roy then did not want to use it. For some time it was used for VIPs, and then it became The Disney Gallery. Now it is home to the “Disneyland Dream Suite” and soon the 21 Royal offering.
#45: A total of $8 million was spent on the attraction at Disneyland.
#44:  The Magic Kingdom Pirates of the Caribbean ride opened to guests on December 15th, 1973.
#43: There is a total of 4 Pirates of the Caribbean rides across all the Disney Parks. You can count 5 if you are counting the one in Shanghai called Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure, as it’s very different from the other attractions.
#42: The Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Tokyo Disneyland opened to the public on April 15th, 1983.
#41: The Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland Paris opened to the public on April 12th, 1992.
#40: The Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland opened to the public on March 18th, 1967.
#39: Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl made $654 million worldwide.
#38: Robert De Niro was originally offered the role of Captain Jack Sparrow. However, he turned down the role because he thought that the film would do poorly at the box office.
#37: The entire scene where the attack on Port Royal happened was all shot in one take.
#36: The Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise features 4 movies so far, with one more and the final one on the way coming May 26th, 2017.
#35: Keira Knightley felt very unqualified for the role of Elizabeth Swann.
#34: Filming for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales took place in Puerto Rico and New Orleans.
#33: Hans Zimmer is actually not recording the soundtrack for the 5th film; one of his proteges, Geoff Zanelli is doing it. Hans has recorded the soundtracks for the other 4 films.
#32: Filming officially ended for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales on July 21st, 2015.
#31: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was never expected to succeed. In fact, Disney thought that the 2003 film The Haunted Mansion would be the bigger hit.
#30: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest was the number 1 film of 2006, making almost $1.8 billion at the worldwide box office.
#29: In total, the film franchise has made $3.73 billion, not including the 5th one coming in May.
#28: The Interceptor ship from Pirates of the Caribbean Curse of the Black Pearl was actually a real ship named the Lady Washington.
#27: During filming, Johnny Depp wore contact lenses that acted like sunglasses so he wouldn’t have to squint while facing the sun.
#26: Davy Jones’ tentacles were partially real, the rest was CGI.
#25: Pirates of the Caribbean at Magic Kingdom almost never happened. Imagineers thought that the attraction wouldn’t be popular in Florida with the proximity to the Caribbean. So many guests complained that Disney decided to build the ride in Florida instead of the unique Western River Expedition.
#24: Only the Disneyland and Disneyland Paris versions of Pirates of the Caribbean have 2 drops, while Magic Kingdom, Shanghai, and Tokyo Disneyland only have 1.
#23: The Magic Kingdom version of the ride is actually 7 minutes shorter than the Disneyland version. In fact, the Disneyland version is the longest out of all the Pirates of the Caribbean attractions across Disney Parks. The total run time for the Disneyland version is 15:30 while in Magic Kingdom it is 8:30.
#22: Arrow Dynamics manufactured the both the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland versions, while Intamin manufactured the one in Disneyland Paris.
#21: In total, there are 630,000 gallons of water pumping throughout the Disneyland attraction.
#20: In order to renovate/refurbish the Pirates at Disneyland, it takes a total of 3 days to empty the ‘bayou’ and 3 days to fill it back up.
#19: Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides was shot on 5 different islands which included Kauai, Oahu, Puerto Rico, Palominito, and Great Britain.
#18: The Queen Anne’s Revenge from Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides, was the first historical ship that was represented in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise.
#17: Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man’s Chest, as of right now, is the highest grossing film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise which made $1.66 billion in the worldwide box office.
#16: The lowest grossing film in the Pirates’ franchise is Pirates of the Caribbean Curse of the Black Pearl, which only made $654 million.
#15: The Disneyland version of Pirates of the Caribbean actually used to have real human bones… yep human bones. They did eventually take them all out, however to this day, it is rumored there is one human skull left in the ride but has not been confirmed.
#14: While riding the Disneyland version, pay very close attention to the voice of the Auctioneer. He may sound familiar… maybe too familiar? The reason he sounds so familiar is that the voice of the Auctioneer for the audio-animatronic is actually the voice of the beloved ‘Ghost Host.’ Not only that, he voices the ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales’ line as well as many other pirates in the ride! The person behind these voices is the one and only Paul Frees.
#13: To create the ‘fire’ in the attraction, cloth, lights, and fans are all used. In fact, the Anaheim Fire Chief almost shut down the ride at one point for thinking it was real fire!
#12: X Atencio and George Bruns were the Imagineers who composed the famous ‘Yo Ho, Yo Ho, a Pirates’ Life for Me!’
#11: The lyric “Fifteen men on the Dead Man’s Chest” and “Yo Ho Ho, and a bottle of rum!” referred to the pirate Blackbeard’s habit of leaving crewmen on the deserted island, with only a bottle of rum, to die as punishment.
#10: The “Yo Ho, A Pirate’s Life for Me”) was sung by The Mellomen, a barbershop quartet that also sang many songs for Disney films. They also sang as backup for Elvis. The frontman of The Mellomen, Thurl Ravenscroft, was the voice of Tony the Tiger, of Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes.
#9:  Pirates of the Caribbean’s character Davy Jones came from the old seaman’s idiom “Davy Jones’ Locker”. It means the bottom of the sea: if someone was sent to Davy Jones’ Locker, it means that he died at sea.
#8: Remember the jail scene where several characters were trying to get the key from the dog? The whistling guy in the middle is based on a janitor that used to work at what is now called Walt Disney Imagineering.
#7: The ride starts at Laffite’s Landing, where you board a boat after waiting in line for what seems to be three and a half days or so. The Lafitte in Lafitte’s Landing refers to Jean Lafitte (often spelled Laffite), who was a real-life pirate and privateer in the Gulf of Mexico (and subsequent American war hero) in the late 1700s/early 1800s.
#6: When you pass the Blue Bayou restaurant, look up at the second story of the building. You may think that it’s a facade, but the balcony actually belongs to Club 33, a member-only restaurant that most of us can’t afford to join (it costs tens of thousands of dollars to join, plus there’s a ten year waiting list anyhow).
#5: The most famous pirate of the entire ride – besides the newly added Jack Sparrow, Davy Jones and Captain Barbossa for the movie tie-in – is the Pooped Pirate. Originally, the Pooped Pirate was shown boasting and waving a lady’s lingerie while a woman peeked up from inside an oak barrel behind his back. But that was deemed politically incorrect in the 1990’s, so the Pooped Pirate was changed to the gluttonous pirate in 1997 (the woman in the barrel was replaced by a cat) and then to a pirate holding the key and map in 2006 (with Jack Sparrow in the barrel).
#4: The façade of the attraction for Disneyland was partly inspired by the Cabildo building in Jackson Square in New Orleans, which served as the seat of the Spanish colonial government in 1799. It is also noted for being the site where the Louisiana Purchase was signed in 1803.
#3: At the beginning of the Magic Kingdom version, guests experience one big drop. This wasn’t done to add a thrill to the ride, although it does have that effect. The drop is there because Disney needed to move guests below the train tracks above. The drop couldn’t be any bigger though because of the high water table in that particular spot.
#2: In the Magic Kingdom version, enter the queue on the left-hand side and look for the tall gun cabinets. The cabinets have hidden Mickey-shaped locks. As you float past the Treasure Room at the end, there is a hidden Mickey on the lock in the middle of the open wooden door, as well as on the cabinet locks behind Captain Jack Sparrow.
#1: One of the scenes in the Florida queue area is of two skeletons playing chess in a dungeon cell. If you look closely, you might notice that no one will win this chess game; the pieces are arranged in a eternal stalemate.

Prepare to Make Sail!

I hope you have enjoyed these 50 fascinating facts about the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise and rides! Happy 50th birthday you scalawags!

REVIEW: California Grill’s “Celebration at the Top” Debuts, But Does It Sip, Savor, and Sparkle $123 Worth?

Announced just over a week ago, the Celebration at the Top event offered at the California Grill on top floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort debuted last night. Here is Disney’s description of the event…

 width=

Join us for an intimate event that celebrates fine food and fireworks.

Highlights

Experience the flavors of the Pacific Coast—and enjoy a dazzling fireworks display—during Celebration at the Top, a special event held in the private Sonoma Room and Napa Room of California Grill.

Here, you can relax, unwind and savor light bites and refreshments for one hour prior to the Magic Kingdom fireworks. Culinary offerings include:

Canapés, sushi and small plates inspired by the California Grill menu
Libations from the complimentary bar offering California wines, beers, and cordials.
As showtime approaches, step out onto the intimate and private observation deck reserved just for Celebration at the Top Guests. Here, you can enjoy an incredible view of the Wishes nighttime spectacular—the biggest and brightest fireworks in Magic Kingdom history. The lights will dim as music is piped into California Grill—so you’ll be immersed in the magic of the night.

After fireworks, head back inside to enjoy a sweet spread of petit four desserts, cordials and coffee.

Location

Celebration at the Top is held in the Sonoma Room and the Napa Room at California Grill, an award-winning restaurant located on the 15th floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort. These private rooms are ideal for intimate events, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows and connecting to an exclusive observation deck—where you can enjoy sweeping views of Bay Lake and Magic Kingdom park.

Parking

For your convenience, complimentary valet parking is included with this event.

Pricing and Reservations

Start planning for an unforgettable evening. Explore pricing and reservation details for Celebration at the Top:

  • Pricing: $99 plus gratuity and tax per person
  • Dates: Held on select Sundays through April
  • Reservations: Book online or by calling (407) WDW-DINE or (407) 939-3463

Please note that the Wishes nighttime spectacular may be changed or canceled without prior notice.

So, Sunday, February 26th, 2017 was the first event, and we went to see just how good it would be. Mind you, the actual price of the event after tax and gratuity was roughly $123.00. Can you get your value out of an even that high in price? Let’s find out.

 width=

Check in took place starting at 6:30pm near the California Grill check-in desk, with the rooms upstairs opening for the event at 6:45PM sharp. I thought this was nice as it gave us 15 minutes to go and enjoy the view from the balcony before beginning our experience.

 width=

I honestly haven’t dined at California Grill since the week it reopened a few years back. Then again, I’ve never been a big fan. The views are unparalleled, but the food has typically disappointed me.

 width=

Regardless, it could not have been a prettier evening with nicer weather.

 width=

 width=

Once 6:45pm rolled around, we were invited into a private room with seating. The observation deck for the event was open if you wanted to go out there, but we wanted to start making the most of our time here with food and drink.

 width=

There were assigned seats last night, but we were told this would change moving forward. The views from here were nice and I thought it was a pleasant atmosphere. The tables were spaced out nicely and the event did not feel too overcrowded (maybe at the start of food service, but otherwise comfortable).

Once you are seated, you have a card with your name on it, and a strange light-up necklace thing. I don’t even know how to describe them…

 width=

At the open bar, this menu greeted guests. While this may seem like a short list, also available was Tanqueray, Captain Morgan, Ketel One, Seagrams, Bacardi, Dewers Scotch, and Jack Daniels. Basically, you could order just about anything that the bartenders could make with any of those ingredients. This is the best selection at any dessert party event at Walt Disney World, far and away.

 width=

I have to say I enjoyed a majority of the wines listed (and yes, I did try all five of them), with the Bordeaux Blend being my favorite, but the MacMurray Estate Vineyards Pinot Gris being a close second though.

 width=

A variety of beers are available as well. The bars opened with the event at 6:45PM and remained open un till 8:45PM, when the bartenders made the rounds to see if anyone was interested in a final drink before departing.

 width=

The small appetizers include two flatbreads, tandoori style chicken satay, and a pork belly bao. The flatbreads are the Duck Confit and Roasted Tomato variety.

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

The flatbreads were just OK. The chicken satay with Vietnamese peanut sauce was solid, but my favorite had to be the Pork Belly Bao. Overall, this round felt a little lacking and could probably benefit from 1-2 more items.

 width=

Sushi makes up the second food station. A Shrimp Tempura Roll, Vegetable Roll, and California Roll were available .A lobster roll is also available at this station (and it was quite good).

 width=
 width=

I liked the sushi well enough, but it’s not really my favorite that I have had.

Fireworks Viewing

Just moments before fireworks begin, you may step outside on to a private balcony and enjoy the Magic Kingdom fireworks, which is still Wishes! until May 11th and will then be replaced by Happily Ever After on May 12th. While it has not been decided as of yet, it seems likely that these Celebration at the Top events will be extended past April and continue into the new show.

On your way out, you are handed a light-up glass with champagne. This is a nice touch, and you can take the cup home.

 width=

The viewing area is behind the usual viewing area, but it is far enough behind that the guests in front of you will in no way obstruct your view. There is also more than enough room out here with the limited number of guests at Celebration at the Top. All in all, the view is as good as a regular view from California Grill (which you can get if you go dine at the lounge or the regular restaurant).

Below is video of the fireworks from this private balcony, which is quite the nice view:

Dessert

 width=

Here its the dessert station, which opens once the fireworks conclude and guests are welcomed back inside. On a side note, you could stay inside and watch fireworks through the windows if you wish, assuming you want to continue to enjoy food and drink from a climate controlled environment.

 width=

Desserts include fruit tarts, cream puffs, a creme brûlée tart, chocolate ganache cupcakes, and a hazelnut crunch cake. The dessert service began at 8:15PM and ran until the end of the event around 9PM.

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

The Creme Brûlée tart was amazing, as was the Hazelnut Crunch Cake. Overall, all of the desserts were really great, and in a lot of ways saved the event from the somewhat disappointing appetizer servings.

OVERALL

Value wise, I don’t feel like Celebration at the Top is a waste, but you may find just as good of a time (and value) at California Grill through several other methods.

Brunch at California Grill offers unlimited mimosas and quite a bit more food, all without time constraints of Celebration at the Top. As well, by showing your receipt from earlier in the day, you will be welcomed back upstairs during the fireworks that evening and be given access to the balcony. $123 can also buy you quite a bit of food at California Grill during normal meal services, which also provides access to the balcony. And lastly, the lounge at California Grill, which does not require a reservation (but may be hard to get into later in the evening), also provides, you guessed it, balcony access.

So, where is the value in Celebration at the Top? Alcohol and service. If you feel like you can put back several drinks in 2 hours, then you can find your value here. Unlike other dessert parties, the bartenders were actively making rounds to top off and replenish drinks in the dining room. This is a nice change, but still doesn’t quite do the trick.

Honestly, I had a great time at Celebration at the Top, but it still falls under “overpriced”. This isn’t so much a feeling I had when we experienced the Star Wars or Jingle Bell, Jingle Bam dessert parties at Hollywood Studios, but those are priced at just about half of this. Even though there was less time to consume alcohol, those offered a wider selection and a better value per hour than Celebration at the Top. As far as Magic Kingdom offerings go, you may be better off with Ferrytale Wishes if you prefer alcohol, and for sure you will want to just book the in-park dessert party if you have young children.

Celebration at the Top is a savory, sparkly good time if you want an open bar and an event likely free of small children. Otherwise, there are plenty of other options you should explore.

The new drink will be available hot or iced.

Road Work

 width=

While taking the monorail from Epcot to Magic Kingdom, we got a nice view of the ongoing roadwork to alter the way guests leave and enter the Magic Kingdom resort area. This will alleviate the current Magic Kingdom toll plaza, leaving it just for guests parking at the Transportation and Ticket Center. You can see the plans for the roadwork HERE.

 width=

A ton of trees on the right side of the toll plaza are cleared for a new road to take guests to Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground.

To the left, more trees are being cleared just after the toll plaza, where the new flyover will be.

 width=

Monorail red was looking really rough, and its wasn’t just on the doors either. The front of the nose cone was just as marked up as this. When things look like this, it is unacceptable. This is the kind of maintenance I expect from Six Flags, not Disney.

Welcome to the Magic Kingdom

Work continues on the Main Street Railroad Station and the train remains closed.

The Haunted Mansion MagicBand 2 was released recently. For more details on it (and link to buy it), check out our post on the limited edition collectible. If you click the link to buy, WDWNT even gets a few bucks to put towards more fantastic Disney World coverage for you.

Work continues on the new covered seating areas outside of Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe.

The D-Tech on Demand kiosks inside the Tomorrowland Light and Power Co. now also have a matching Haunted Mansion 45th anniversary phone case.

There are also some new MagicBand designs inspired by the upcoming Beauty and the Beast film.

Sadly, these are still going to be printed on the old MagicBands.

Tomorrowland Gets “Revive”d

 width=

The Joffrey’s Revive coffee kiosk in Tomorrowland just got really interesting, now with a tall marquee reminiscent of those that were found in the land back in the 1970’s.

 width=

If You Had Wings, Flight to the Moon/Mission to Mars, and the Circlevision 360 theaters all had similar marquees back in the day.

This and That

Some nice flowers were planted in Town Square, perfect for the spring weather which has already descended upon Orlando.

 width=

On the way back aboard the monorail, we could see more work happening just outside of the Magic Kingdom toll plaza, along the road which leads guests away from the park. Apologies for the dirt monorail window, but it was the hand we were dealt.
