This will be a day long remembered. – Darth Vader, “Star Wars: A New Hope”

For those that were not able to attend the D23 Expo and see the historical announcement by Disney Chairman and CEO, Bob Iger. Here it is:

[sc name=”YouTube Embed 800w” id=”xbOBqRL5AQA” ]

“I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the next 60 years of Parks & Resorts than with Star Wars Land. Every restaurant, building, everything will be inhabited by the aliens and droids you’d expect to find there. You’d expect to find a Cantina – and there will be one. You’ll have the chance to run into all the droids and fantastic beasts that Star Wars is known for. You’ll meet characters from The Force Awakens and more from the Star Wars saga. The land will have two fantastic signature attractions, including the ability to take the controls of the millennium Falcon on a customized secret mission. We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single themed land expansion ever. These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance.”

Everything We Know So Far About Star Wars Land at Disneyland & Disney World np

Unless you have been living inside a Taun Taun all weekend, you have no doubt heard or read about the long-awaited Star Wars themed land that Bob Iger announced for Disney Parks on Saturday at the D23 Expo. The new land will be constructed at both Disneyland Park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in the U.S., with no word yet as to if the construction will take place simultaneously on both coasts (or when it might actually open to guests). If it is simultaneous, the official Disneyland Today twitter account is claiming construction will begin no later than the end of 2017. Now, this does not mean that construction won’t start early, but the project is still in the design phase at this time. The twitter account also confirmed that Mickey’s Toontown at Disneyland will not be affected, but Big Thunder Ranch will close to make room for the land which will also take the place of many current backstage buildings.

@DisneylandToday are they building it behind Fantasyland or Tomorrowland at Disneyland?

@PaulYankees It’s going to be in the Big Thunder Ranch area, inclusive of some backstage locations.

@DisneylandToday Any idea on where “Star Wars Land” will be and when construction will begin?

@ZachTWB It will take place in the Big Thunder Ranch area. We haven’t announced a date yet, but it would be no later than the end of 2017.

Why was Toontown spared? Well, our guess is that this 14-acre Star Wars land with two attractions may be just the beginning. The two new attractions will center around the story (or at least take place around the time) of The Force Awakens, but there are still two more Star Wars episodes to follow and many “A Star Wars Story” stand-alone films on the way. I can’t imagine a scenario where more Star Wars attractions aren’t added over time to both Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios to include the stories following Episode VII. It is likely Mickey’s Toontown is simply a placeholder at this time for more Star Wars adventures to come at a later date several years from now.

While we still don’t know exactly where Star Wars land will be located at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, just north of Star Tours seems like a good bet. Yes, that might mean the end of Muppetvision 3-D, but we’ll have to wait for some official announcement on that.

The land will represent a new planet on the Outer Rim, sort of the last stop before the deep reaches of space in the Star Wars universe, so it would be a good place for anyone in the galaxy to stop on their journey. This will be a world where it is believable that anyone and anything from the franchise could appear and not seem out of place.  The land will feature two new attractions:

These authentic lands will have two signature attractions, including the ability to take the controls of one of the most recognizable ships in the galaxy, the Millennium Falcon, on a customized secret mission, and an epic Star Wars adventure that puts guests in the middle of a climactic battle.

We expect the Millennium Falcon attraction to be a simulator-type ride that allows guests to control the movement and fate of the vessel. The details on the other attraction are a little more vague, but rumor has it that it may be a type of shooting ride along the lines of the cutting-edge version of Buzz Lightyear being designed for Shanghai Disneyland.

The remainder of the land will feature shops, restaurants, and lounges operated by the inhabitants of the planet. You may not find cast member name tags throughout the land, but maybe strange alien creatures who own and operate the establishments. The only venue we have heard anything about so far is a Cantina, different in design but similar in overall concept to the one you would find in Mos Eisley space port on Tatooine. There also appears to be a nightclub with live musical performances, but this could be another part of the Cantina.

It seems that Star Tours will cover the entire Star Wars series, while the new land is mostly inspired by athe new films being released over the next few years. It feels like a bold move for the company ahead of the release of Episode VII, but I’m sure now that Bob Iger has seen the finished film product and is pleased with it that there is enough confidence in the future of the franchise to move forward with this project as is. Only time will tell if this is a wise decision.

Stay tuned for more details on the Star Wars themed-land as the become available.

D23 Expo 2015: “Star Wars Land” Announced For Disney’s Hollywood Studios And Disneyland np

The wait is over! Star Wars Land has been officially announced by Bob Iger at D23!

Today at the D23 EXPO 2015, The Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced to an audience of more than 7,500 fans that Star Wars-themed lands will be coming to Disneyland park in Anaheim, Calif., and Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla., allowing Star Wars fans to step into the stories from a galaxy far, far away.

Ambitious plans to bring Star Wars to life in the two parks include creating Disney’s largest single themed land expansions ever at 14 acres each, transporting guests to a never-before-seen planet, a remote trading port and one of the last stops before wild space where Star Wars characters and their stories come to life.

“I am thrilled to announce the next chapter in the long and exciting history between Disney Parks and Star Wars,” said Iger.  “We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single themed land expansion ever.  These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance.”

These authentic lands will have two signature attractions.  Along with the thrilling battle experience, another attraction puts guests behind the controls of one of the most recognizable ships in the galaxy, the Millennium Falcon, as they take on a customized secret mission.

Iger also shared concept images of the Star Wars-themed lands, giving fans a glimpse at what is to come for Disney parks.

The partnership between Disney and Lucasfilm dates back to 1987, when the successful Star Tours attraction, inspired by George Lucas’s legendary Star Wars film series, opened at Disneyland.  The attraction was then redesigned, emerging as “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue” in 2011 and featuring more than 50 different story outcomes and the possibility to visit five different planets.

For 60 years, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts has been delighting millions of people with fantastic storytelling, exceptional entertainment and extraordinary experiences, creating places where guests can make life-long memories with their friends and families.  This announcement marks an unprecedented time of growth with exciting developments happening around the world – from Disneyland Resort’s Diamond Celebration to the anticipated opening of Shanghai Disney Resort in China.

Jungle Cruise “Skipper Canteen” Finally Announced for Magic Kingdom

Jungle Cruise fans will have even more to look forward to later this year when the brand-new Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen restaurant opens in Adventureland.

At the Jungle Skipper Canteen, guests will be able to experience “World Famous Jungle Cuisine” in one of several unique dining rooms – including a crew mess hall and a once-hidden secret meeting room of the famed Society of Explorers and Adventurers. The restaurant will also be staffed by Jungle Cruise Skippers.

The Jungle Skipper Canteen is currently under construction and will open its doors in late 2015.

PHOTOS: AVATAR Themed Land and Shanghai Disneyland Previewed at D23 Expo 2015 np

From the Disney Insider blog:

Earlier this afternoon we were able to get a sneak peek at the Imagineering Pavilion at this year’s D23 Expo and it blew us away. It was mostly focused on the Shanghai Disneyland theme park (opening next spring), with a small experience dedicated to the upcoming Pandora expansion of Disney’s Animal Kingdom (based on James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar franchise). And it was incredible. The amount of art was positively overwhelming, both in how much stuff there was and because it was amazingly gorgeous, full of rich detail and snappy storytelling that we’ve come to expect from the wizards at Walt Disney Imagineering. We’ll have a full write-up of the experience soon, but we wanted to share a huge photo gallery from the pavilion.

BREAKING: Hangar in Disney Springs is an Indiana Jones Themed Restaurant, “Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar” Opens This Fall

We were already excited about the hangar themed restaurant coming to Disney Springs in The Landing, but that excitement has just been taken to new heights…

DisneySprings9

Original concept art from Disney

The bar and restaurant opening Fall 2015 is going to be called “Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar”, named for the pilot friend who comes to Indiana Jones’ rescue in the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark. The aviation themed lounge located between Paradiso 37 and the Boathouse will feature 150 seats, including a bar area located on a boat that seems to be hanging off the side of the main building. The theme will be expressed through propeller themed ceiling fans, vintage travel posters, and correspondence between Jock and Indy.

The location will feature small plates and themed beverages and include special effects similar to Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.

IMG_4183-1200x900

UPDATE: Disney has now officially confirmed our story and given a few more details:

NJHR5685963

With a prime location along Lake Buena Vista and seating for 150, the venue will feature unique cocktails – such as the “Hovito Mojito” with Barsol Quebranta Pisco, fresh lime juice and simple syrup – and small plates such as “Air Pirates Everything Pretzels” with house-made mustard and beer cheese fondue.

The design team has gone to great lengths to ensure that every element – from the propeller-based ceiling fans and diving bell “booth” to the “Rolling Boulder Meatballs” on the menu – fits within the storyline.

And just what is that story? Ardent fans of the “Indiana Jones” films may recognize Jock Lindsey as Indy’s frequent pilot; he’s also the owner of a pet snake named Reggie – an important detail, trust me on this! In the main room, guests will discover an expansive bar, aviation decor filling the room, vintage travel posters covering the walls and correspondence between Jock, Indy and their fellow adventurers on display. Guests can eat, drink and be merry outside as well, in Jocks’ old steamboat, now in permanent dry dock and aptly named “Reggie;” and in nearby seating on the adjacent deck.
