Anna & Elsa FROZEN Topiary Vignette to Headline 2015 Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival

2011 Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival.

At the 75-day-long Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival in 2015, a Frozen topiary vignette will surely “freeze” guests in their tracks at World Showcase Plaza. The festival is taking place March 4-May 17, 2015 and will be headlined by the topiary debut of the Frozen characters, along with a new entrance vignette called “Goofy About Spring” featuring brand new topiaries of Chip and Dale who will be accompanied by Goofy and friends. Other 2015 highlights include:

  • Fresh new menu items will debut at the festival’s Outdoor Kitchens where, for the third festival year running, guests can taste garden- and spring-inspired tapas-sized food and beverages and have their complimentary Garden Passports stamped as they stroll the World Showcase promenade.
  • A Southwest desert garden will premiere as a thriving ecosystem.
  • Ten new mini-gardens will surprise guests around every corner. Guests will discover a new “health garden,” a pepper garden, a dinosaur-plant garden and a Shakespeare garden, among others, each designed with a storytelling element.
  • Guests can discover the story of the Monarch butterfly’s epic journey across the continent and see butterflies emerge from their chrysalises at Tinker Bell’s Butterfly House.
  • A weekend concert series will rock audiences every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Performers will include Gin Blossoms, Pablo Cruise, Village People and a lineup of top bands representing four decades of pop music.
  • Disney gardeners will lead weekend how-to Gardening Seminars at the Festival Center, where guests also can pick up signature festival merchandise.
  • When the sun sets, illuminated topiary and play gardens will glow brightly for an after-dark festival experience.

“This is one of our most ambitious festivals ever,” says Eric Darden, festival horticulture manager. “We’re telling stories we’ve never told before. You’ll get a fresh taste of spring — it’ll be like the first spring farmer’s market for America.”

As park guests nibble on inspired Outdoor Kitchen goodies, they can wander among multiple themed gardens and children’s play areas. Nearly 100 expertly crafted topiary characters, including Snow White, Bambi, Mickey Mouse, Simba and Peter Pan, will animate the landscape when Epcot transforms to a vibrant wonderland of sweeping garden beds and exhibits.

The “Frozen” topiary vignette at World Showcase Plaza will pop with color as Anna’s and Elsa’s icy world, illustrated with white and silver blooms of delphinium, alyssum and other floral varieties, transforms to a brilliant spring palette featuring Gerbera daisies, petunias, Sweet William and other flora.

A Health Garden near The Land pavilion in Future World will display ancient medicinal plants including garlic, aloe, chamomile, fennel, mint and others. Plants used to develop modern prescriptions will be papaya, periwinkle, turmeric, yew, thyme and valerian. And the new Shakespeare Garden at the United Kingdom pavilion will feature roses to represent Romeo and Juliet: “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Also in the garden: rosemary from Hamlet, lavender from The Winter’s Tale, plus representations featuring poppy, lily, honeysuckle and willow.

Tinker Bell’s Butterfly House will return with hundreds of winged beauties fluttering above and lighting upon their favorite nectar-producing plants. Dozens of Disney-crafted “flower towers” and beds of multi-colored blooms will add to the floral splendor of the park’s landscape.  At least 70,000 bedding plants will surround the Future World east and west lakes alone; on the water, 220 mini-gardens will be set afloat.

Several special weekend happenings will include Art in the Garden Weekend (March 27-29); Florida Fresh Weekend (April 24-26); and Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. Weekend (May 8-10).

Tom Corless’ 11/17/14 WDW Photo Report (Disney Springs, Hollywood Studios, New Phone Cases, Big Hero 6, ETC.)

I recently visited Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Downtown Disney and I have a great deal of newsworthy photos to share, so let’s take a look at what’s new and exciting:

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

The dancing ornaments are back at Hollywood Studios!

There are two limited edition pins for the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights this year, no passholder pin for the first time in over a decade

CHRISTMAS CUPS!!!

With photo touchpoints at the exit of Tower of Terror, you have a limited window to tap your media in order to claim your photo without going to the counter

Sorry for the blurry photo, but here is what the beautifully themed touchpoints look like

All quiet back at Soundstage 1… for now…

More and more of the Studio Backlot Tour is vanishing…

New Frozen phone cases for 5C and 6 are now at Wandering Oaken’s

Both the summer and holiday Olaf MagicBands available at Wandering Oaken’s

Santa Goofy now also meets before the Spectacle of Lights from 1PM-5PM

Specialty drinks at Osborne Lights this year, notably there is no eggnog…

A child wiped out an entire display of cookies… this was the worst tragedy to strike the park since American Idol closed…

The poor cast members started to restock the shelf as the child still dug through the wreckage to find a cookie she wanted to buy…

Moving to Downtown Disney/Disney Springs, Christmas decorations are up

An elevated track piece has also appeared between Splitsville, AMC, Wolfgang Puck’s and Bongo’s

Work continues on the bridge in the Marketplace over Lake Buena Vista

A ton of new phone case designs were recently introduced at D-Tech On Demand at the Marketplace Co-Op

A look at some of the newer options to choose from

New ladies shirts at Tren-D

3 different holiday big figs are available this year

Walls came down around Riverboat Square, the new area in front of Fulton’s and Portobello

The path between Porotobello and Raglan Road opened, so you no longer have to travel the long way around

Some facades are out from behind walls in The Landing

The Boathouse

Another façade

Waterside Park, now open in The Landing

Another elevated train track by the West Side Starbucks, this one appears to be just a lighting rig and decorative piece

A giant inflatable Baymax from Big Hero 6 was erected for the opening of the film

PHOTOS, VIDEO: The Jingle Cruise Adds New Props & Jokes for 2014 Holiday Season at the Magic Kingdom

Last year, the inaugural season of the Jingle Cruise at the Magic Kingdom delighted guests, but the Jungle itself was a little sparce when it came to the holiday feel that was added to the boathouse queue of the attraction. This year, a few scenes in the ride added some yuletide cheer with the new backstory that several shipments of holiday decorations and such that were to be received at the Jungle Navigation Company never quite made it. The animals who inhabit the waterways of the world seem to have found them…

There’s much more new to see for 2014, so sail with us as we go “Jungle All The Way” aboard the Jingle Cruise at the Magic Kingdom:

We sure hope Trader Sam-ta pays us a visit this year!

“Sunshine Highline” Elevated Dining Area for Disney Springs Officially Cancelled

Disney released an interesting piece of concept art today:

Disney Springs

Something missing?

IMG_5471-L

Concept art with the “Sunshine Highline” still there, including the ADA compliant elevator

IMG_5473-L

In back story, the area was an abandoned railroad track

It would seem that the delay in the construction of Food Truck Park on the West Side, now also known as Exposition Park, was the removal of the “Sunshine Highline” second floor offerings, an elevated abandoned train track area for guests to relax and possibly dine. The concept art on the walls for Food Truck Park featured the above art until quite recently it was removed and signs change to reflect the Fall 2014 opening, rather than Summer. Disney is being very quiet about the removal, so it is unknown if it was a budgetary or safety decision. Drunken guests on an elevated platform WOULD be a bad idea. Regardless, it’s sad to see the use of these structures relegated to simply being shade and lighting structures. Oh well…

Africa Expansion Announced for Animal Kingdom, New “Harambe Marketplace” Counter Service Restaurant Coming in 2015

In the midst of all of the work happening at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park, we finally know what’s happening behind those constructions walls in Africa:

tes

As you have probably seen if you’ve been by Mombasa Marketplace and the entrance to the Wildlife Express Train, construction work is taking place and even more new structures are under way. The Africa Marketplace, as the new area will be known, will open next Spring and expanded merchandise offerings, offer an alternate pathway to travel to Asia and a new quick service restaurant. The quick-service restaurant, the Harambe Marketplace, will feature a number of different food offerings at walk-up windows. This themed colonial-era marketplace will offer produce and raw goods that come straight from Harambe by train. Based on Guest feedback, you’ll see plenty of shade to enjoy while guests relax and eat during their visit.

VIDEO: Take One Last Ride on the Studio Backlot Tour at Walt Disney World, See What It Looks Like Now

If you weren’t able to say goodbye to the Studio Backlot Tour at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on Saturday (you were only given 8 days from the announcement of the closure to actually do so), we have a special treat for you. Enjoy a full ride-through, including the pre-show in its entirety, of the Studio Backlot Tour on its very last day of operation after 26 years:

By Sunday, September 28th, the former entrance to the attraction looked like this:

The news of the Studio Backlot Tour closing was broken by WDWNT.com on Friday, September 19th, 2014. Rumors persist that the area may be used for small scale Toy Story attractions, a smaller version of Cars Land from Disney California Adventure, or possibly even a Star Wars-themed land. No official announcement for the replacement project has been announced by Disney at this time.

RUMOR: Is A Puerto Rico Pavilion Coming to World Showcase at Epcot?

Puerto Rico’s presence was expanded this year at the 2014 Epcot Food and Wine Festival bringing not only many different flavors from the island to guests at Epcot, but also a bit of heritage and a look at the history of Puerto Rico. In a recent article published by Puerto Rican newspaper, Metro, details were divulged of the partnership that they’ve created with Disney. The island of Puerto Rico has signed a 3 year contract to bring the flavors of the island to the Epcot Food and Wine Festival, as well as the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival beginning in 2015 and running through 2016. For the Food and Wine 2015 display, they’ve already begun working on a design based on “El Yunque“, the second tallest mountain on the island and the only Tropical Rain Forest located within the United States National Forest System.

Old_san_juan

Various different companies from Puerto Rico including CC1, Yaucono, Club Caribbean, and Pan American Grain have invested over $700,000 to bring Puerto Rico to the Epcot festivals.

Also mentioned in the article is that Disney and Puerto Rico are currently in talks to bring a permanent addition of Puerto Rico to Epcot’s World Showcase. The addition of Puerto Rico to World Showcase would reportedly cost over $100 million that would be split over the course of 10 years (2017 – 2027) through a contract between Disney and the private companies involved.

We’ve seen in the past many attempts to add a new country to World Showcase, and all of them since Norway in 1988 have never made it off of the drawing board. A few years ago, a similar story about Brazil was posted on this very site. Of course, there is always the possibility that a Puerto Rico pavilion would never end up being built at Epcot, but the possibility is still there if the proper corporations actually come through on funding the project.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico

As the resident WDWNT Puerto Rican, I would be very excited to see my home island as a World Showcase pavilion. The heritage and architecture of Puerto Rico would make for a fantastic pavilion. For those familiar with Puerto Rico, El Morro would be an excellent choice to represent the Old San Juan area of the island in the pavilion.

What are your thoughts if Puerto Rico were to join the other countries at Epcot? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
