WDW News Today Celebrates 3rd Anniversary – July 8th, 2010

It’s hard to believe it was three years ago today that I sat down and finally pulled the trigger on creating a Disney fan website, but it’s even harder to believe the world that surrounds myself three years after that decision was made. I had no idea or intention of creating a website, a podcast, and a brand that would be enjoyed by thousands. To be honest, I was happy to see just a few visitors trickle in every day.

WDW News Today was created to fill a niche that I wanted to see a fan site cater to: providing a little bit of Walt Disney World news and information each and every day. In 2007, this community was a very different place. The “big” sites updated their sites maybe once a week, twice a week if we were lucky. Everyday I would make the rounds, visiting the same bunch of sites, getting incredibly excited when one of them had even a minor update. It had always been obvious that Walt Disney World has enough restaurants, attractions, shops, resorts, etc. throughout its history to provide more than enough content on a daily basis. With that premise, WDW News Today was born. The initial response was trivial, most famously it was stated on a certain forum (that will remain nameless) that WDWNT “would not last more than 3 months.” I don’t think I need to tell any stories of what happened after this….

I’ll be the first to admit the site was very bad in the beginning. It was hideous, we didn’t have photo reports, and it really was just myself and a team of 4 or 5 people trying a lot of different things that mostly didn’t work. Things did get better, and I can’t deny that It has had more to do with the team that surrounded me here, rather than anything I did myself. I have been truly blessed to be connected to an incredible staff as we’ve grown over the past 3 years, a team that I not only consider to be my colleagues, but among my very best friends. This “family” that has been brought together by this crazy idea may be the greatest gift of the entire experience, a gift that is provided through your continued support of our work.

WDW News Today’s evolution into what is now the WDWNT Network has been an unpredictable miracle. The growing fan-base, as well as the growing staff of talented and devoted people, has forever changed my life for the better. The only way I can re-pay this gift is through hard work and keeping the promise I made on July 8, 2007, that “WDW News Today is a site created for you, the Disney World fan, and will be dedicated to educating and entertaining you about this magical place.”

I thought it might be fun to look back at our very first news posts that were made the morning after the site opened. It’s amazing how correct we were with some of the rumors mentioned below:

7/9/2007

The big news this week is the removal of the Epcot wand and the refurbishment of Spaceship Earth that both begin today. Expect the entire second half of the Spaceship Earth attraction to be completely different from the current version when it reopens in mid-November.

Over at the Disney MGM Studios, Toy Story Mania’s main building is shaping up nicely and should be complete by September with the attraction opening in Spring of 2008.

At Animal Kingdom, work on the Yak and Yeti restaurant is picking up pace as the rush is on to be finished by October. Don’t be surprised if the restaurant doesn’t open until November/December of this year. Also worth noting is the newly announced refurbishment of the Astro Orbiter in August. Some major interior updates are in store for the spinning planets as the idea is to get them spinning much to the speed they originally did.

Over at the Disneyland Resort, they have added a Project Tomorrow exhibit to Innoventions in Tomorrowland. The exhibit is somewhat similar to the Project Tomorrow exhibits at the exit of Epcot’s Spaceship Earth.

Pecos Bill’s Cafe in the Magic Kingdom has added four touch screen ordering systems for guests who wish to pay by Credit Card and those who have a Disney Dining Plan. Expect to see these changes in all WDW fast food locations by year’s end.

Today, the associated press had a story about the death of longtime Disney animator Art Stevens back on May 22. Art worked on Fantasia, The Fox and The Hound, The Rescuers, Winnie the Pooh, 101 Dalmations, Robin Hood, Mary Poppins, and Bednobs and Broomsticks before his retirement in 1983. He was 92 years old.

Well, thats it for now, but everyday we will have news updates and i will be sure to update news as it happens throughout the day every day. Thanks for reading the soon to be #1 source for Walt Disney World news! See ya real soon!

We continue our celebration tonight at 9:30PM ET at www.WDWNTunes.com with our annual live anniversary show. We hope you can join us for that. Again, thank you for your support and admiration over the last 3 years, I can’t begin to explain what it means to me. As long as there is a Walt Disney World Resort, we will continue “Bridging the Gaps Between You and the World”.

“See Ya’ Real Late” Debuts Tonight!!!

Heeeeeeere’s Tommy! Get ready for a summer of fun with “See Ya’ Real Late”, WDWNT Network’s new late night talk show! Hosted by Tom Corless, and featuring Chris Lastrapes and Jose Castillo, it’s a weekly late night talk style show with a monologue, sketches & guest interviews. The fun starts tonight, June 16th, and runs throughout the summer! Get excited for your late night Disney fix, exclusively at www.WDWNTunes.com starting at 11PM ET!

A little word about it from Tom Corless about the show: “This late night talks show is only one piece of a HUGE summer promotion for the WDWNT Network we will be revealing very soon, but it may be the part I’m most excited about. I’ve always admired late night talk shows, from Carson to Conan; I think it’s something missing from the Disney online community and we’re pretty confident it will be successful during this summer trial run.”

New Details on WDWNT: The Weekend

It’s hard to believe we are just under 4 months until the WDWNT Network holds its first-ever event at the Walt Disney World Resort, WDWNT: The Weekend. As we stated when we announced the tentative schedule for the event a few months ago, things were subject to change. Some things have changed. In an effort to make the events more affordable, we have changed the venue for our Live Podcast and Breakfast event and reduced the ticket price. The event will still be held on Saturday, August 28th, but will now be held in the Cape Cod Room at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Convention Center. Tickets for the Live Podcast and Breakfast are available now, you can get all the details on what’s included at this link (Tickets are also still available for our Liberty Tree Tavern and Boma group meals on the same page).

Many have asked us about being able to participate in the event from home. We are proud to announce that there will be a few different opportunities to do so. Of course, we will be broadcasting the Live Podcast event on WDWNTunes, but we are also proud to announce a new event that will allow those at home to play along with those in attendance. We’re calling it “WDWNT’s Future World Adventure”. While we can’t give you all the details just yet, it will be an event where teams of WDWNT: The Weekend attendees compete for prizes and our followers sitting at home can play-along simultaneously. Stay tuned for more details on this fun competition as we get closer to WDWNT: The Weekend.

We were asked on multiple occasions “Why is the event in late August?”. To answer the question, we wanted to pick a time of year that was both affordable and gave our guests the opportunity to take part in other special events at Disney World. When we selected dates for the event, we had a feeling that the annual “free dining” offer would be available for bookings during WDWNT: The Weekend, and we were right. You can book “free dining” or one of several other special offers for the Walt Disney World Resort during WDWNT: The Weekend at our special booking page, courtesy of Magical Travel.

We will be providing more frequent updates concerning WDWNT: The Weekend now that we are getting closer to the event. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!!!

WDWNT Network Announces Major Changes and Additions

The WDWNT Network has always been dedicated to providing its followers with quality information and entertainment. In continuing this tradition, we are happy to announce a few additions and changes to the WDWNT Network that are taking place in the coming days, weeks, and months:

-For the first time ever, an existing podcast is being added to the WDWNT Network family. “Mr. Frank’s Wild Ride” has been a popular podcast & radio show since it was introduced, and now it is being added to the WDWNT Network roster. Frank Rogers hosts the variety show along with co-hosts Heather Nichols and Margaret Fries of the Disney World Moms Panel. “Mr. Frank’s Wild Ride” will soon reside at www.MrFranksWildRide.com, and can also be found on Twitter, Facebook, and its own section on the WDWNT Network Community Forums. The podcast actually began as an online radio show beginning September 2009 and ran through January 2010, switching to a podcast format this month. “Besides how nice the WDWNT Network staff has been to me, this move for Mr. Frank’s Wild Ride offers an enhanced connection to Disney, and great technical support,” said Frank, “We’re excited about the move to the WDWNT Network for the opportunity to offer a wonderful podcast product.”

-Multiple upgrades are on the way to the WDWNTube Disney Parks video site. You have probably already noticed the new layout that we introduced to the site a few weeks ago, but that was only the beginning. We have already begun converting many of our existing videos to full 1080P resolution and all new videos to come will be uploaded at this resolution as well. Followers will also soon be able to watch WDWNTube videos on their smart phones and various other mobile devices. Other enhancements are on the way as well, so stay tuned!

-Since WDWNTunes was launched in June 2009, it has been a tremendous learning experience for the WDWNT Network staff. Not only were we finally able to conduct live interactive programs with our listeners and followers, but we have also been able to provide great original programming and music from the Disney Parks and Resorts all around the world. Beginning Saturday, February 20, WDWNTunes will launch a completely revamped schedule filled with original programming, great Disney Parks music both past and present, and signature WDWNT Network Podcasts. For complete details on the new schedule, be sure to check the newly added WDWNTunes section of the WDWNT Network Community Forums.

-WDWNT: The Weekend is the WDWNT Network’s first ever fan event at the Walt Disney World Resort, taking place August 26th through August 29th, 2010. The event was officially announced June 2009 and registration opened for the event opened January 2010. WDWNTunes Announces “Super WDWNTunes Saturday”

WDWNTunes is proud to announce our most exciting day of programming ever, with our signature WDWNT Live! show, new original programming, WDWNT Network podcasts, and the Disney Parks music you love. “Super WDWNTunes Saturday” is a special event that defines everything that the online radio station & chat room is about.

The event begins with the wildly popular and first-ever WDWNTunes original program, Brandon and Banks’ Super Obscure Show. B&B S.O.S. is a show dedicated to obscure Disney audio and is usually featured twice a day on WDWNTunes. For this one time only special event, you can catch all 4 of the first episodes of the show in a row beginning at 10:00 AM ET.

For the first time in history, an episode of the popular WDW News Today Podcast will debut on WDWNTunes.com before being available for download. Episode 130 of the WDWNT Podcast will be airing beginning at 1:45 PM ET and contains what the podcast team has already described as “the best and funniest segment we’ve ever recorded”.

The first episode of the very first podcast dedicated to the collecting, trading, and creation of Vinylmation debuted earlier this week, it’s called The Viylmation Station. Super WDWNTunes Saturday will feature the innovative podcast starting at 4:00 PM ET, giving listeners a chance to hear Tom Corless, John Rick, and Scott Smith dissect Disney’s latest collectible craze.

WDWNTunes hosted a live chat on February 10th to give Disney fans a place to communicate live as major announcements were made about the future of the Walt Disney World Resort. While the exciting chat was taking place, a record WDWNTunes audience enjoyed a special mix of Disney audio called “WDW Through the Years”. The music selection took listeners on an audio journey from the opening of Walt Disney World in 1971 to the debut of Disney’s Honorary VoluntEARS Cavalcade in January. The audio was so popular with listeners that we have decided to play it one more time during Super WDWNTunes Saturday beginning at 6:00 PM ET.

The festivities end with a WDWNTunes trademark, “WDWNT Live!”. This is a live interactive program that gives listeners a chance to interact with WDWNT Network staff members from WDW News Today, Disneyland News Today, The Disney Pincast, and The Vinylmation Station, as well as fellow listeners in the chat room. This first-ever Saturday presentation of WDWNT Live! begins at 9:30 PM ET.

Super WDWNTunes Saturday begins at 10:00 AM ET and is the biggest event in WDWNTunes history, so be sure to join us at www.WDWNTunes.com this Saturday, February 13, 2010.
