Spotlight On: Mike Vetrone’s Poison Apple Custom

Mike Vetrone sent us a few photos of and a few words on his most recent creation:

“I wanted to share with you one of my most recent works.  It is a 9 in Bad Apple from Snow White.  I wanted to really emphasize the “poison” on the apple so I sculpted it!

This was a total challenge for me, but it was a great learning experience and I love the outcome.  On the back it featured the old hag’s hand holding the apple and the “body” of the Vinylmation is her sleeve.  On the front of the body it featured Snow White and the Prince which acts as foreshadowing.  Enjoy!”

Spotlight On: Roman’s Jabba Custom

In this week leading up to Star Wars Weekends at DHS, artist Roman Rodriquez would like to share a new Star Wars inspired custom he has created!

“I want to take this opportunity to introduce my custom Jabba The Hunt 9” Claymation.  I was approached by Susan Ermish-Gunther to create a realistic and detailed 9” Vinylmation Jabba.  I wanted to give her a very realistic Jabba and I love the way it came out.  One of my favorite features of this custom is the way the clay captures the wrinkles and bumps in his body.  In addition,  I added glass eyes that provide a life like look. These eyes are so real that it seems like he is looking at you and following your every move.  I am available for commission work and I can be contacted at my page www.facebook.com/romanrodriguezart.”

Artist Mike Vetrone just sent us pictures of his newest creation. My jaw dropped. This depiction of Beauty and the Beast is simply stunning. I love the added touch on the wheels. Take a look and let us know what you think…

Spotlight On: Celeste’s Wonder Woman, Genie, Tokidoki

We noticed a few new customs from our friend Celeste and we asked her to share them with us. Here’s what she said. (“Her Wonder Woman piece is amazing. I love the details, including the lasso!”-MC)

“I’d thought I share a few customs I’ve been working on for the last few months. First is Wonder Woman, she was made as a Christmas present for a very special gal. When finally revealed I was overjoyed by the wonderful response from everyone.

Another favorite I had the pleasure of creating is a Tokidoki inspired custom and I loved how this came out.

A new series I hope to finish over the next month or so is series 2 of light up customs. The first series was all princesses and the second one I’m calling “Spellbound”, and it will be a magic based theme. It will include some of the most famous and infamous characters. Here’s a sneak peek of one of the figures that will be included in the series, Genie!!

Thanks for having me and you can always check out my fb for more customs @ facebook.com/pages/Celeste-Custom-Vinylmations/253094558053568

Celeste, we can’t wait until you complete the light up series. It looks amazing!

Spotlight On: Aaralyn’s Tick Tock

Aaralyn is back and this time she created this cool Tick Tock from Peter Pan! We got her to talk a little about this figure. Make sure you take a close look at Tick’s stomach, there’s more then meets the eye there.

“I wanted to share a recent custom of mine that breaks away from the cuteness of my traditional style. A few friends of mine have been pushing me to try something different and with the recent re-release of Peter Pan, I decided to make one of my favorite characters from the movie.

Disney has a great talent for giving characters personality, even when those characters don’t speak, and I believe Tick-Tock falls into this category. One of my favorite scenes from the movie is when Smee is shaving Captain Hook (or the seagull rather) and Tick-Tock comes along. After Smee scolds him, he pouts before turning around and leaving. This clip from the movie was my main inspiration for this piece.

I added quite a few elements to this custom that I have never attempted before, which made this custom one of my most challenging. The first challenge I faced was cutting a hole in the body of the custom. After, I had to figure out how I wanted Tick-Tock’s face to fit on the mold and I spent a lot of time focused on his face. Somewhere in the process I decided to add a painted canvas background to his case, to give the custom more depth.

The last part of the process was installing the sound, working pocket-watch, and scenery inside the custom, then protecting it all with a piece of plexiglass. While the sound is installed inside the custom, the button to activate it can be pushed while Tick-Tock is sitting in his case.

In addition, I created a video to showcase these features:

I am also having a contest on my Facebook page to win a 3″ vinylmation custom, and the character will be chosen by the winner! The giveaway end March 12. 2013 at 9 pm CST. Please visit my Facebook page linked below for details; thanks for reading and good luck!

Spotlight On: Ryan Branoff’s Animal

We ran into Ryan on the internet and since MC is a recovering drummer, this custom spoke to us. We asked Ryan about his custom.

Destination Vinylmation: Hi Ryan, how long have your been doing customs?

Ryan Branoff: I’ve always been interested in the custom world of Vinylmation. I have been collecting Vinylmation for the last 3 years, but have just recently in the past month been doing my own customs. I’ve been working really hard this past month, I never knew how addicting creating your own Vinylmation would be!

DV: They are addicting! So, what is your art background?

RB: Art has always been a major part of my life. I went to an arts-centric high school, where I studied Visual Arts, and this continued on to university. Since then, I have been working as a commission artist with a focus on portraiture (on the side to my day job).

DV: That sounds fun. I love this figure, what inspired it?

RB: Definitely my love of the Muppets was the inspiration behind this figure. Ever since I was little, I have been a big fan of the Muppets, especially Animal. I have a pretty expansive Muppet collection spanning from the Palisades line of action figures to every Muppet-related Vinylmation that has been released. I knew my first 9 inch custom had to be special, and the result was my Electric Mayhem Animal.

DV: What was the most difficult part of this design?

RB: The Electric Mayhem logo on the back was the most challenging. I knew I had to get it just right to execute the overall design on the back of figure and in order for the figure to have the overall feel I was going for.

DV: Don’t worry. It looks great! Just curious, which are your favorite Muppets?

RB: Animal, Gonzo, and Bean Bunny.

DV: Which of Disney’s VInylmation figures is your favorite?

RB: This one is really tough. There are a lot of figures that appeal to me, but I would have to say that it’s a toss up between Park 1 Kermit and Park 3 Rizzomouse.

DV: How can people find more of your figures?

RB: To see any of my past projects and for future releases, you just need to ‘Like’ my Facebook Artist Page: www.facebook.com/CustomVinylmationRyanBranoff or email me at ryan.branoff@facebook.com.

Spotlight On: Millennium Middle School Art Portfolio Students

Melissa and Brandon, the Art Portfolio teachers at Millennium Middle School in Sanford, Florida, have finished another Vinylmation themed project with their students and we would like to share the finished designs with you.

DV: Last year, we spotlighted the Vinylmation themed project you gave to your students. You decided to do this once again this year, with some differences. What were the requirements of this year’s project.

Melissa and Brandon: For this project, our only requirements were that the kids create something new and different from the hundreds of Vinylmation they had seen throughout their time in class. Each student had to do a front and back colored sketch before they could draw their designs in their Vinylmation and begin painting. Students were allowed to create and attach accessories if it enhanced their piece. After creating their Vinylmation, each student designed and created a custom box. We really tried to give the kids lots of creative freedom so they would take pride in their creation and do their best work.

DV: Were your students excited to do this project?
MB: Our kids were so excited! They had created the art for so many Vinylmation at this point that they were thrilled to finally get their hands on the real thing. Some kids were slightly intimidated at first, but once they finished their sketches there was no stopping the excitement.

DV: Now that you have done a Vinylmation themed project with another set of students, do you have a feel for the impact this type of themed learning has on your students?
MB: It’s funny, we just officially finished our Vinylmation unit today and we always get several gasps and sighs when we say we are leaving it behind. Brandon gives the kids a reassuring speech that they can go on- it’s kind of like a eulogy for something they have come to love and rely on. These kids have worked on Vinylmation, in some form, since September. The Vinylmation form has become almost comforting to them. After our first year with Vinylmation, I fell in love with themed projects and have worked it into my other classes (on a much smaller scale). I think themed learning really gives the students a boost of confidence before entering each project by allowing them to use a theme they are already familiar with.

Spotlight On: Evilos’ P. Sherman

Evilos emailed us this great custom and we asked for more info. So in his own words, here is Evilos…

“These are my two of a kind customs for the “Custom Artist Project” headed up by Rust This World. The project consists of 12 well known custom artists in the Vinylmation custom world. Each artist has been tasked with creating a custom themed around the world of Pixar movies. My custom named “P.Sherman 42 Wallaby Way” is themed around “Finding Nemo”. The main blue custom is one of my “Domed” customs that portrays the part in the movie when Nemo “Touches the Butt” and is taken by P.Sherman (The Dentist). Mr.Shermans’ scuba mask is left behind with the address “P.Sherman 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney NSW”, giving Nemo’s father Marlin the only clue to finding his captured son.

Since this is a Blind Box Series, the dome would not fit in a normal box. So I had to think of a way to keep it consistent with the rest of the customs being offered with the series. So I created the Green figure with the address written in the style portrayed in the movie. Collectors will open their blind boxes, hopefully find the green figure, then contact me to redeem the dome. Both domes have been created so there will be no waiting on their end.

There will be a total of 24 figures (could be more) to this Custom Pixar Series. I will be offering up two of these sets, so the odd’s are 1:12 in pulling my custom from this amazing series.
