REVIEW: Spice Road Table Soft Opens at Epcot

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

This past weekend the Spice Road Table soft opened at the Morocco pavilion in Epcot. There is no official opening date yet and in the meantime no discounts are being accepted (this includes Cast, Tables in Wonderland, Annual Pass, ext.). The restaurant is located right along World Showcase Lagoon giving it stunning views of the park and a new viewing location for Illuminations. The menu for Spice Road  Table is tapas style, featuring classic Mediterranean dishes. Also well the restaurant has a selection of beers, wines, speciality drinks and desserts. Spice Road Table currently does not accept reservations making it a perfect spur of the moment dining choice.

The decor at Spice Road Table is simply stunning. Imagineering once again did an excellent job. Upon walking in, you see a beautiful bar. To the left is the outdoor seating and the indoor seating is on the right.

IMG_3380

IMG_3378

Let’s take a look at what the menu offers for Spice Road Table…

IMG_3384

IMG_3386

Pictured above is the Hummus and Imported Olives. This dish was a table favorite the hummus was so smooth and creamy with no aftertaste that you commonly find with the hummus you can buy in the grocery store.

IMG_3387

Above is the Mediterranean Omelet this was a surprisingly good dish. It’s basically your standard omelet that is stacked on top of potatoes and topped with a thick tomato sauce. I thought it would make a perfect breakfast dish, it was odd to have the omelet mixed with items that were more traditional dinner items.

IMG_3390

Spicy Garlic Shrimp – the name says it all! It wasn’t as spicy as I was expecting and it sure was loaded with garlic.

IMG_3388

The Moroccan Merguez Sausage was by far the spiciest dish we tried out. So if you love spicy this is the dish to try out.

For those of you who have allergies Spice Road Table is happy to accommodate. I have a dairy allergy and the chef came out and I could actually have 7 out of the 10 items. Items that were deemed unsafe, the chicken roll, lamb slider and calamari. Another important note is that ALL the bread served at Spice Road Table contained dairy.  Unfortunately, on this trip we didn’t get to desserts so I am unsure if any of those items are safe.

Overall, it was great to try out the new dishes at Spice Road Table but no dish was a run away hit with me. The food was okay but once you factor in the prices and portions it has me in no rush to be returning to this location.

There’s also a new sign that will interact with guests installed in the pre-show area at Muppet Vision 3-D

The Let The Memories Begin signage has been removed from the front of Animal Kingdom

Some walls are up near Island Mercantile where FastPass+ kiosks once stood… not sure if they are moving this help desk or not

Walls now up blocking guests from Camp Minnie-Mickey as it transforms into AVATAR

Camp Minnie-Mickey signage around the park has been removed

Work continues on the new home for Festival of the Lion King and the former Dawa Bar has now been absorbed by walls to accommodate queue construction

Not too long ago, Dug and Russell got some permanent signage for their meet and greet

WDWNT The Magazine: Dining at Disney with Food Allergies

A couple of years ago the unthinkable happened and I discovered that I had a dairy allergy. Food allergies that develop later in life can seem like a death sentence at first, but over time you learn there are still tasty things you can eat and that life will go on.

While I won’t be enjoying a Mickey Mouse Ice Cream Bar anytime soon, I have come to discover that there are still many treats I can enjoy around property like Pineapple Dole Whips and French Toast Cupcakes. The great thing about Disney is that they go out of their way to accommodate guests with allergies. Now that I am a Disney local I wanted to take some time each month to share with you some of the food options available to you if you have food allergies.

This month I want to begin with a special event that was held at Raglan Road this past weekend. Our friends over at the Gluten Free + Dairy Free WDW Blog hosted a Lunch & Learn at Raglan Road with cookbook author Laurie Sadowski. The event was packed with loads of helpful information as well as getting to enjoy a scrumptious lunch at Raglan Road.

The event started out with a Magners Irish Cider tasting and a chance to mingle with fellow event attendees. It was great to pick up tips from others’ experiences at various restaurants around property. If you have dined on property (whether it be sitdown or counter service) with anyone who has food allergies, you know that a manager or chef will come out to speak with you to discuss your food options. Some places are much more accommodating than others. I have had chefs say they can make me whatever I like off the menu (with some modifications, of course) and others who told me I was limited to a bowl of pasta. So it’s always great to hear from others where they have had the best experience.

photo 3

photo 2photo 1The chef spoke with the group first about Raglan Road’s dedication to accommodating allergies. The chef acknowledged that food allergies are becoming more and more common and that, at Raglan Road, they strive to find traditional Irish dishes that are safe for those with food allergies. He also went into a little depth about the food preparation out back. For example, they have dedicated fryers in the kitchen to use for those who have certain allergies.

For lunch, there was a special menu of dairy free and gluten free options provided to us. The menu, as you can see on the left, included Fish & Chips, Butternut Squash Risotto, and a Salmon Salad. I opted for the fish and chips because they are just too delicious to pass up. I have had the regular fish and chips in the past because there is no milk used to bread the fish (the Irish instead opt for beer instead of milk). This is the first time I have ever had the gluten free option and I was surprised to find it just as tasty. As our server pointed out, the gluten free breading makes it extra crunchy! I highly recommend giving them a try next time you are at Downtown Disney.

For the last portion of our Lunch & Learn, Laurie Sadowski spoke about her books and some cooking tips to keep in mind when cooking without flour. I don’t want to give it all away so I recommend you follow the link below and get one of her cookbooks for yourself. Outside of hearing about Sadowski’s books we also got some handouts on cooking with Magners Irish Cider and Mary’s Gone Crackers, two of the event’s sponsors.

While you are waiting for your next trip to the World don’t forget to check out Laurie Sadowski’s allergy free cookbooks. She spoke about some wonderful alternatives to help your baked goods taste just as delectable as those that have gluten, dairy, and other common allergens. I purchased both versions of The Allergy-Free Cookbooks and I am looking forward to baking these recipes! A few of the highlights include: chocolate filled pumpkin cinnamon rolls, coconut pull apart bread, triple chocolate layer cake, and the essential chocolate chip cookie.

Do you also have food allergies? I would love to hear about your experiences dining on property!

New Soda Flavors Coming, Some Old Favorites Leaving Club Cool at Epcot

Club_Cool_3

Is there a certain soda at Club Cool that you absolutely love? Well, you may want to go and get one last taste (of what’s left) before new flavors appear next Wednesday October 30, 2013.  A couple of “favorites” will be sticking around though…here’s a look at the new line up:

Fanta Pineapple: With more than 90 distinct flavors available in more than 180 countries, Fanta made its European debut in the 1940’s and was introduced to the USA in 1960. Fanta Pineapple is caffeine-free and features a sweet pineapple taste.

VegitaBeta: Originally launched in Japan in 1992, VegitaBeta is a non-carbonated beverage with apricot and passion fruit flavors and is rich in beta-carotene that contributes to its unique orange color. (Currently Available)

Fanta (Melon Frosty): This is the number one soft drink of Thailand. With a fun melon flavor, this carbonated beverage is beloved in Thailand’s sunny, tropical climate.

Bibo: Originally created in 1998, Bibo is a fruit flavored line of juice drinks popular in South Africa. The brand features fun characters such as Johnny Orange, Taka Strawberry, and Paolo Peach.

Sparberry: A raspberry flavored cream soda, Sparberry launched in Africa in 1955. It is exclusively available in several countries in southeast Africa.

Guarana Kuat: This is a guarana berry flavored soft drink first launched in Brazil in 1997. The word guarana comes from the Guarani word guna, which translates to ‘fruit like the eyes of the people.”

Inca Kola: Known as “The Taste of Peru,” Inca Kola has an unusually sweet fruity flavor that many compare to the taste of liquid bubblegum, The name refers to the Quechua words for king and queen.

Beverly (Staying): With its bitter flavor, it is a popular non-alcoholic aperitif that is a traditional part of Italian refreshment culture. (Currently Available)

These flavors are only available in the United States at Epcot and World of Coca-Cola attractions in Atlanta and Las Vegas. Club Cool will continue toe “Magical Moment” of recognizing the first tasting/testers of the day.

Going away from Club Cool will be Smart Watermelon, Kinley Lemon, Fanta Colita, Lift Apple, Mezzo Mix, and Krest Ginger Ale. Unfortunately, most of these are already out of stock and are not going to be replenished in time for you to say goodbye… THEY ARE GONE FOREVER.

So, what do you think? Did you lose a favorite drink (R.I.P. Smart Watermelon)? Excited that Beverly is staying?

Three courses and a non-alcoholic beverage for $30 — What a bargain! But what is included in these fabulous dinners? As an example, at the Wolfgang Puck Café, you can start with garlic and white bean hummus, a Caesar salad or butternut squash soup. Entrees include pesto chicken, crispy pork loin or spaghetti bolognese. Desserts feature key lime pie, carrot cake or a brownie sundae. Paradiso 37 is offering blackened mahi sliders, a hearty beef burrito or chicken enchiladas paired with a starter and dessert. At Planet Hollywood, their Celebrity BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger is on tap for an entrée, or lasagna or their Southwest Salad. Splitsville lets you choose from eight appetizers and ten entrées, with a brownie and ice cream for dessert. And that $60 menu at Fulton’s Crab House? It includes either shrimp cocktail, steamed clams and mussels or jumbo lump crab cake to start; a whole Rhode Island lobster, cioppino or filet mignon for an entrée, and a Tollhouse Cookie sundae, key lime pie or root beer float for dessert. .

Will you be attending the Foodtopia event? At which restaurant will you dine? Which menu sounds the most appetizing?
