REVIEW, PHOTOS, VIDEO: Star Wars Fireworks Dessert Party Gets Revamped with “Special Edition” Treatment

On Sunday, I attended the very first of the newly revamped “Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular Dessert Party at Disney’s Hollywood Studios”, the latest version of the event we provided you a review of back in January. The largest change is in venue as the Florida heat and rain finally convinced Disney to find a new, indoor home for the food and beverage portion of the evening. That new home is Star Wars Launch Bay and Disney used to opportunity given with the move to revamp a number of the offerings and the logistics of the event.

The party is $69.00 for adults and $39.00 for children ages 3-9 (includes a souvenir Chewbacca stein for each guest) and advance reservations are highly recommended. All food and drinks pictured are included with that price. The event is hosted nightly.

IMG_9463

The dessert party portion of the event now takes place inside of Star Wars Launch Bay.

IMG_9464

Check-in is done at what was going to be the FastPass+ verification podium, but FastPass+ was never rolled out to Launch Bay, so now it is just used for this process.

IMG_9465

Even outside of what is the main dining area for the event, there are tables for guest use. The area can b ea little cramped, so it is nice that they are encouraging guests to roam around Launch Bay while still enjoying their treats.

IMG_9466

The main area roped off from other guests is to the right of the Kylo Ren meet and greet on the bottom floor.

IMG_9467

Here, guests will find a similar, yet upgraded experience compared to what was offered before.

IMG_9469

New items include a flatbread with 2 different sauces, sugar cookies, an R2-D2 cupcake, and a Darth Maul red velvet brownie.

IMG_9472

The skewers, formerly referred to as sabers but changed for legal reasons (too many kids fighting with them I guess), are still here.

IMG_9473

IMG_9474

IMG_9476

The flatbread is served with both a black bean dip and a roasted red pepper hummus. While I will miss the biscuits, this probably makes a little more sense at a dessert party.

IMG_9478

IMG_9480

IMG_9481

The blue milk panna cotta is still offered as well.

IMG_9482

IMG_9483

IMG_9485

My favorite treat, the Freeze-fried Nutella Truffle has stayed on as well, offering a treat that is as fun to watch being made as it is to devour seconds later.

IMG_9487

Many of the fun dessert names were removed, but they are still as good (maybe even a little better given that the elements do not take their toll on the food as much when it is inside).

IMG_9488

IMG_7780

Above is a photo from January when the bread pudding was referred to as “Space Debris”.

IMG_9489

The Darth Maul eclair was replaced with a Red Velvet Brownie, a definite upgrade.

IMG_9490

IMG_9497

The Star Wars dessert parties have to be my favorite just for the presentation alone. The photo opportunities are great and are sure to be something cool to show friends and family when you get back home. On top of that,l almost everything is absolutely delicious.

IMG_9498

The new R2-D2 cupcake is my least favorite of the 3, although I’m not really sure it was more than a vanilla cupcake with a sugar covered icing. The BB-8 and Darth Vader cupcakes are still phenomenal, with the first being lemon flavored and the later chocolate & peanut butter.

IMG_9505

IMG_9508

IMG_9509

They also provided a number of toppings, including ice cream, for the bread pudding.

IMG_9516

The table settings were a nice upgrade and they would reflect the room you were dining in.

IMG_9515

Tables available up by the Cantina in Launch Bay.

IMG_9491

The drink menu saw the largest amount of changes, replacing all 6 specialty alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

IMG_9493

I started with the Galactic Punch.

IMG_9495

Josh started with the Light Speed Margarita.

IMG_9496

IMG_9500

The Cosmic Citrus Twist, pictured above.

IMG_9502

The Swamp Milk was my favorite of the new bunch, unique in look and flavor.

IMG_9511

Non-alcoholic options included Guava Juice and a Watermelon Lemonade.Soft drinks in cans, water, and coffee are also available.

IMG_9512

IMG_9513

I took some video around the dessert part in Launch Bay to give a better idea of the atmosphere inside:

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcCIe7gaqIg]

IMG_9518

The viewing area itself has not moved, but it is being set-up differently and has a much smaller footprint.

IMG_9459

A picture of it set-up earlier in the evening, seen above. The check-in process for the party begins at Launch Bay at 8:00PM. My suggestion would be to be there at 8PM and get the most for your money. You can have an hour and a half in that space, which is more than enough to enjoy everything there. Cast members walk the party attendees over around 9:15PM, but there is nothing to stop you from heading over a little earlier to ensure you have a good spot. Now, no one in the viewing area audibly complained that they couldn’t see, but I like to have a front row view, unobstructed, so we walked over to the area around 9:05PM and were situated right against the rope behind the new children’s section.

IMG_9519

When the tables were here for the old party, shorter tables to accommodate the wheelchair guests were provided up front. This section up front is now for children and could be used for those in wheelchairs as well.

IMG_9521

This was honestly the perfect view of the show as I have been unimpressed with the sight lines for it from nearly every other spot around the Center Stage area. Being up against the rope will give you plenty of space from anyone of adult height, and if you are traveling with kids you can have them right in front of you in the children’s section.

I took a video from the section to show just how good the view is. Also, the show has been polished up with some new effects over the last few weeks, si it may be worth another look:

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNhNGkWdtaU]

Overall, I think Disney has increased the value here. The decorations and venue are a vast improvement, the improvements that I think finally make this worth $69.00. It is by far the best view of the show available and if you are looking to appease any Star Wars fans in your group, this will do it. I don’t often feel these dessert parties are worth it, but this really is the only one I think delivers at its price point. Alcoholic drinks, endless desserts, good atmosphere, and the perfect viewing of the nighttime spectacular (along with a neat souvenir, albeit not exclusive to the event) come together for a very worthwhile package for the Star Wars fan.

REVIEW: Tomorrowland Terrace Reopens for Summer with Spicy, Revamped Menu

The Tomorrowland Terrace has had a tumultuous history at the Magic Kingdom. It has typically been closed seasonally for most of the last 20 years, reopening for filler table service a few times, or as the often despised “noodle station” which infamously served nearly inedible fast-food Asian cuisine that would make Panda Express seem like Victoria and Albert’s. In more recent years, it has reopened with a fairly forgettable menu, with options that could only be viewed as a minor improvement over half-cooked noodles. Recently, the venue reopened for counter service dining with a very different menu, so we decided to go check it out.

IMG_8338

IMG_8339

IMG_8363

Spicy Chicken Sandwich ($9.99) – This was pretty solid. The patty itself had a nice flavor, complimented well by the spicy sauce. The bun could have been a little fresher, but otherwise a fine option here. SCORE: 5 out of 7.

IMG_8342

IMG_8345

IMG_8353

Dipped Chicken Strips with Buffalo Sauce ($10.99) – These were everything I wanted them to be. I have been pretty sad since the removal of the buffalo chicken breast nuggets at Backlot Express at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but these are just as good if not better. Sometimes you just want something simple and cheap, and these deliver on a good quantity of food and good flavor from the sauce. I just wish I liked the fries more… SCORE: 7 out of 7.

IMG_8355

IMG_8357

IMG_8359

Coconut Tres Leches Cake ($4.59) – I was pleasantly surprised how good this was. A nice lighter option to follow the strong flavors from some of the spicy entrees here. SCORE: 6 out of 7.

IMG_8350

Rocky Road Brownie ($4.59) – Don’t buy this. It’s so chalky and bland that it is nearly inedible. It tasted what I imagine 5-year-expired chocolate frosting tastes like. SCORE: 0 out of 7

IMG_8368

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this experience (outside of the brownie). The service was quick and the food was actually fantastic for what I would call a run-of-the-mill counter service. I would much prefer to eat here than fight the crowds at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe, plus the options here are just much, much, much better. It may not be Be Our Guest, but Tomorrowland Terrace is a fine choice for a quick bite this summer when you visit the Magic Kingdom.

REVIEW: New Menu Effectively Ruins “The Plaza Restaurant” at the Magic Kingdom

I love The Plaza Restaurant. Wait, let me rephrase that… I loved the Plaza Restaurant. For many years I have enjoyed a soup, a turkey sandwich and some ice cream on a pretty consistent basis from this Magic Kingdom establishment, beloved for its fairly inexpensive table service options, good sandwiches, and stellar ice cream creations. When a new menu went into effect a few weeks ago, I decided a trip back was necessary to see what had been done to the menu. What I found was pretty disappointing…

IMG_9746

Gone is the Turkey Sandwich I’ve enjoyed here most of my life (among other items). Newly added are the Loaded Fries, a Fried Green Tomato Sandwich, and Honey BBQ Beef Brisket Burger.

IMG_9747

Plaza Loaded Fries ($8) – Meant to emulate the old Figaro Fries once served at Pinocchio’s Village Haus many years ago, this new representation leaves much to be desired. First off, Plaza changed from thick steak fries to what are essentially the fries found at most Disney counter service locations, which is a bad start. The toppings also didn’t taste fresh. I would’t eat fries at Plaza anymore and I certainly wouldn’t order these again. SCORE: 0 out of 7.

IMG_9748

IMG_9752

Fried Green Tomato Sandwich ($16) – This too was awful. The counter service version at Hollywood Studios is significantly better than this offering at the Plaza. The bun had no flavor, the tomato itself was way too greasy, to the point where it was slipping out of the breading it was in, and the toppings tasted a bit off. SCORE: 0 out of 7.

IMG_9754

IMG_9760

Grilled Chicken Sandwich ($17) – This was more of what I expect from Plaza, solid and satisfying. Nothing crazy about this, but there didn’t need to be. If you are going to get a side with your entree here, stick with the chips for sure. SCORE: 3.5 out of 7.

IMG_9763

Honey BBQ Beef Brisket Burger ($19) – This was just OK. The BBQ sauce was just alright, it was honestly no different than getting the BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich from Flame Tree BBQ (which I’m not a big fan of either though) with a burger in it. SCORE: 2 out of 7.

IMG_9765

Overall, I was massively disappointed with Plaza Restaurant. This was a place I often visited once a trip and the experience we had food-wise was pretty awful. Our server was amazing, but the cuisine just wasn’t as good as it had been in years past. The change in fries and the new dishes are all changes for the worse, and I honestly would not recommend this place for anything more than dessert anymore. We would have had dessert on this visit, but everyone was pretty uninterested in eating more after getting through the entrees.

The prices are significantly higher than they have ever been and the value just wasn’t there. I would rather spend $10-20 more a person just to eat at a different table service in the park (or even hit a good counter service location like Pecos Bill’s or Tomorrowland Terrace) than eat an entree or appetizer here again. As I said before, this is really a shame because Plaza was often a favorite of mine, and to see the menu tank so rapidly is hard to stomach, almost as hard to stomach as the loaded fries were…

There are still a few valid entree options here, but not enough for me to recommend this restaurant to anyone.

OVERALL RATING FOR PLAZA RESTAURANT – 1.5 OUT OF 7.

REVIEW: La Cantina de San Angel in Mexico Begins Breakfast Service in Preparation for Frozen at Epcot

With the opening of Frozen Ever After approaching, the Mexico and Norway pavilion have been testing out their new 9AM opening time with some new breakfast options. Over in Mexico, La Cantina de San Angel now opens with the park and offers four breakfast plates (and no margaritas before 11am, before you even ask me):

image

image

The tamal verde con huevos was a good sized dish for the price. The tamale was a little dry, but not bad. The scrambled eggs (or huevos) served with each dish are pretty good, slightly better than the Disney-made counter service scrambled eggs elsewhere.

image

The chilaquiles was the best of all of the dishes in both presentation and taste. Similar in texture to the tamale, this did not have the same dry taste. This would be my recommendation if you are eating here.

image

The pambazo de chorizo is a weird dish, almost tasting like a hamburger covered in marinara sauce. It wasn’t bad, just strange, especially for breakfast.

image

The huevos revueltos kid’s meal is a good size dish and includes a beverage and fruit. The potatoes had a good flavor, and all of the fruit tasted very fresh.

image

Overall, La Cantina serves up a solid breakfast. I’m not sure if they are adding this out of necessity, but I don’t think this is where I would get breakfast at Epcot if given a choice. The bakeries in France and Norway have a really solid pastry lineup I would likely choose over this, and I might even be more likely to go for an adult breakfast platter from Sunshine Seasons over this location. The lack of indoor seating for breakfast doesn’t help the cause in the summer months either. Personally, I would skip this in favor of almost any other breakfast option at Epcot, even if it is on the way to Norway.

REVIEW: Frontera Cocina Opens in Disney Springs; So Much More Than Amazing Pecan Pie

Frontera Cocina opened just yesterday, becoming the latest in a long line of new restaurants to debut in the area over the last year or so. In case you haven’t heard of it, here’s the official release on Frontera Cocina:

Renowned chef Rick Bayless is introducing Florida and the Southeast to his famous gourmet Mexican dishes with the debut of Frontera Cocina now open at Disney Springs at Walt Disney World Resort.

Frontera Cocina will delight friends, family and food lovers with exciting flavors and a contemporary Mexican experience. Warm colors, an open kitchen and a lively atmosphere frame an inviting exploration of the many delights developed by Chef Bayless, a six-time James Beard Foundation winner. Menu items include Oaxacan Red Chile Chicken, Salsa Verde Shrimp Enchiladas Suizas and freshly made salsas and guacamole. In addition, a quick-service taco counter will be added to offer guests a quick taste of Chef Bayless’ award-winning cuisine.

“For me, it is always a thrill to share the lively fresh regional flavors of Mexico with a broader audience,” Chef Bayless said.  “And what better place to do that than Walt Disney World Resort? We plan to add all the deliciousness we can to the experience for all who come to enjoy Frontera Cocina at Disney Springs.”

Executive Chef Stephen Hicks will oversee Frontera Cocina’s kitchen. Hicks has forged his career based on the basic fundamentals of simplicity, sourcing local ingredients and pursuing world-class customer service. Using these guiding principles, Hicks has served as cook and lead in the kitchens of the River Club in Jacksonville, Florida; Sapphire Grill in Savannah, Georgia; and Seasons 52 in Orlando, Florida. Hicks also spent time as a multi-unit chef in Chicago with McCormick & Schmick’s.

And just in case you don’t know who Rick Bayless is…

Chef Rick Bayless is probably best known for winning the title of Bravo TV’s “Top Chef Masters,” with his authentic Mexican cuisine. His highly rated, national Public Television Series, “Mexico–One Plate at a Time,” is in its 10th season. In 2012, Chef Bayless was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for Best Culinary Host.

Chef Bayless has launched several award-winning Chicago restaurants. He founded the casual Frontera Grill in 1987 and received the James Beard Foundation’s highest award, Outstanding Restaurant, in 2007. The 4-star Topolobampo served its first meals in 1989. And the wildly popular, LEED GOLD-certified, fast-casual Xoco launched in 2009, serving wood-oven tortas, steaming caldos, golden churros and bean-to-cup Mexican hot chocolate. Chef Bayless’ quick-service Tortas Frontera restaurants have changed the face of food service at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, while Frontera Fresco restaurants have brought Frontera flavors to several Chicago locations. His award-winning Frontera line of salsas, cooking sauces and non-GMO tortilla chips can be found coast to coast.

Chef Bayless is the author of nine cookbooks, including “Mexico–One Plate at a Time,” which won the James Beard Foundation Best International Cookbook of the Year award in 2001. His “Fiesta at Rick’s” is a New York Times bestseller. He has won six James Beard Foundation awards, including two for his cookbooks, Midwest Chef of the Year, National Chef of the Year, Humanitarian of the Year and Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America.

IMG_8855

Frontera Cocina occupies a fairly unassuming building along the water in Disney Springs, but once inside or by the patio area, you realize that the restaurant may have the best location in all of Town Center.

IMG_8860

IMG_8861

Guests can see into the kitchen just across from Sprinkles.

IMG_8993

IMG_8882

The interior isn’t very large, but it has a pleasant atmosphere.

IMG_8881

IMG_8984

IMG_8982

IMG_8969

The bar area is of a nice size.

IMG_8971

The patio views at night are stunning, better than any others along Town Center, which will be plenty enjoyable when the Summer weather fades away in the Fall.

IMG_8883

Let’s take a look at the menu…

IMG_8884

I’m thoroughly impressed that there isn’t a separate allergy menu, the regular menu has the potential ingredients of concern listed right under each item. This is a nice touch.

IMG_8885

IMG_8886

The back of the menu features a drink menu, but there is also a much larger drink menu at the nearby bar.

IMG_8955

IMG_8956

IMG_8957

IMG_8958

The bar offers a smaller version of the menu, but it seemed like you could order the full menu there anyway.

IMG_8892

Playing with Fire – Avion blanco tequila, cucumber, jalepeno, fresh lime juice, agave nectar, and a hibiscus salt rim.

IMG_8897

Blood Orange Jalapeno Margarita – Casa Noble blanco tequila, orange liqueur, blood orange juice, habanero bitters jalepeno, and a tajin chile rim.

IMG_8899

The “People Watching” was unique in that it had a salt rim which contains black ants, which despite being kind of odd to Americans, really compliments the drink flavor perfectly.

IMG_8906

The Frontera Old Fashioned – Zacapa 23 Solera rum, agave syrup, orange tiki bitters, lemon, and an orange peel.

IMG_8911

The Mexican Cola may not be the best drink to order with dinner, but if I was just hitting the bar I would definitely get this one again.

IMG_8913

The Frontera Margarita – Casa noble blanco tequila, Royal Combier, fresh lime juice, agave nectar, and a salt rim.

IMG_8919

The black ant rim on two of the drinks was unique and surprising for a Disney setting, but it blended nicely with both drinks.

Overall, the drinks were great. I especially enjoyed the Playing with Fire, but I also like Jalapeno Margaritas typically. There wasn’t one of the drinks I would not with have again or recommend to someone dining here.

IMG_8890

On to appetizers, my least favorite was the Chipotle Chicken Tostada. They weren’t bad, just just seems kind of standard. I enjoyed the seasoning on the chicken and the avaiocado added a nice flavor, but overall it just was kind of forgettable against the other choices.

IMG_8894

The Cotel Verde was excellent. The shrimp and scallops blended perfectly with the sauce, which had just a hint of lime.

IMG_8898

I usually am not a fan of guacamole, but the two we tried here were pretty phenomenal. The Bacon version tasted like bacon as you would expect, so I’m not sure how anyone would not like it.

IMG_8900

If you have read any of my dining reviews, you know very well that I have a love for spicy dishes, so needless to say that the Atomic Guacamole was my favorite. The habanero salsa packed a good punch, but also a really nice flavor.

IMG_8905

The Queso Fundido was also spectacular and was a very good size portion with the included tortillas. Melted cheese is hard to mess up, but this was pretty close to perfection.

IMG_8908

The Tortilla Soup was better than expected and is poured table-side (which is now a trend if you remember our Tiffins review).

IMG_8916

Not something I would order again just because the taste reminded me a little too much of Chef Boyardee’s red sauce, but it wasn’t bad.

IMG_8922

Now, on to the entrees. I ordered the Carne Asada, which was a very healthy portion for $32.00. This was my least favorite entree, but that being said, it was something I would order again if I was in the mood for it. The carne asada was cooked well, but what made the dish was the tomatillo salsa and the caramelized plantains.

IMG_8932

It is hard to find a weak spot in the entrees since they are all so good, and I probably only ranked the other entrees over this one as it was what I expected it to be.

IMG_8924

The Shrimp Mojo de Ajo was also enjoyable, mostly thanks to the sauce which is a mix of garlic, chicken broth, olive oil, lime, and chipotle. Overall, a good lighter option

IMG_8925

IMG_8933

The Shrimp Enchiladas Suizas was a particular highlight among the entrees. The creamy roasted tomatillo sauce was unique, not something I have experienced in many dishes but it worked perfectly with the fresh shrimp, complemented by the starchiness of corn tortillas.

IMG_8937

You may not think of sandwiches when you think of Mexican style cuisine, but the Pepito Torta was delicious, especially when dipped in the accompanying chipotle salsa.

IMG_8948

IMG_8941

The carnitas (pork shoulder) was tender and flavorful, probably my favorite of all of the entrees.

IMG_8945

I enjoyed the Oaxacan Red Chile Chicken as well, which is covered in a nice red mole sauce and filled with chicken, rice, and corn tortilla.

IMG_8947

Now the sides… This may sound ridiculous, but the Queso Anejo Mashed Potatoes were out of this world. Mashed potatoes would typically be just about the last side I would order at this kind of a restaurant, but the cheese gave them a sweet taste that was really special. These are probably just about the best mashed potatoes I’ve ever had.

IMG_8940

The Arroz Con Plantains was pretty standard, rice with plantains mixed in which will do the trick if you are in the mood for rice.

IMG_8942

If you need a bigger helping of the Fried Plantains (which may not be a bad idea), they also offer them as a side. As I mentioned earlier, I am a pretty big fan of these.

IMG_8963

The dessert menu wasn’t ready yet when we dined, but our server was happy to describe them all to us. He informed us that Bayless was famous for his pecan pie, so I decided that’s what I had to have. This was seriously one of my favorite desserts I’ve ever had in my entire life. The pie was more akin to a pecan brownie, but it was about as perfect as it could be. Even the ice cream had a good pecan flavor from the dusting over it. I would seriously have just came back to Frontera Concina for this, but luckily I enjoyed the rest of the menu as well.

IMG_8966

The plantain sundae has to be one of the most unique desserts in all of Walt Disney World. I was kind of “weirded out” by the idea of ice cream with plantains, but it turned out to be a really good mix of flavors.

IMG_8960

The Coconut Lime Quattro Leches was wonderful as well, a nice lighter option (but I would just get the pecan pie and exercise more later).

IMG_8975

The staff was nice enough to bring us Crema de Tequila to follow our meal, which was smooth with a light caramel flavor. I’m currently looking for a recipe to make this at home…

IMG_8986

If you enjoyed your meal so much that you want to take it home, they do sell 3 of the salsas at a counter in the front, as well as a Bloody Mary mix and some Rick Bayless books.

IMG_8988

IMG_8990

IMG_8856

Outside, there is a small counter service window attached that sells “to-go” versions of the food and drinks you will find inside Frontera Cocina.

IMG_8857

Overall, Frontera Cocina is yet another viable table service option at Disney Springs. I went in with zero expectations and totally wowed by most of the food and drinks we had during our dinner. There are several dishes here I am dying to try (or even try again) based on our experience, which might lead me to even chose Frontera Cocina over some of my usual lunch at dinner spots at the Springs. A late evening stop here for drinks and more of the amazing pecan pie wouldn’t be out of the question either. Frontera also offers a style that isn’t like anything else at the Springs, even though Paradiso 37 does take a stab at some similar dishes. I wouldn’t even have to think if I was asked to chose between the two, Frontera Cocina would win hands down. Also, I found the prices to be fairly resonable compared to most other options at Disney Springs, although that can change over time.

I will be going back to Frontera Cocina, probably on a regular basis, and if you typically enjoy this kind of cuisine, I get the feeling you will be too.

Major Chef Shake-Up Takes Place at Walt Disney World’s Top Restaurants

According to Scott Joseph of Scott Joseph’s Orlando Restaurant Guide:

Scott Hunnel, the much celebrated chef de cuisine at Victoria & Albert’s restaurant, a position he has held for more than 20 years, has been named executive chef for Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. In that position, he will oversee all the hotel’s restaurants, which, besides Victoria & Albert’s, includes Citricos, Narcoossee’s and the Grand Floridian Cafe.

For now, Hunnel is continuing on at Victoria & Albert’s, but sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity say that a new chef de cuisine will be hired. Hunnel says that Victoria & Albert’s will continue to be a focus of his, even if a new chef de cuisine is hired.

Hunnel, 52, has held the position since 1995 when he moved up from the kitchen at Ariel’s restaurant at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort.

He is one of the most respected and talented chefs in the region and has been nominated for a James Beard Foundation award for Best Chef South eight times. In 2008, Hunnel was recognized by Sante magazine as its Culinary Professional of the Year.

Hunnel’s move is the culmination of a number of changes among top-tier Disney chefs in recent months. Brian Piasecki left California Grill for another position within the company, as did Phillip Ponticelli, who had been chef de cuisine at Citricos. Tim Keating left Flying Fish Cafe — and the company — when the Boardwalk restaurant closed for renovations earlier this year.

Dennis Thompson has been named chef de cuisine at the California Grill, the popular restaurant on the 15th floor of the Contemporary Resort overlooking the Magic Kingdom. Thompson replaced Brian Piasecki, who left CG in February to accept a new position within the company with the cumbersome title of Executive Chef WDW Resorts, Moderate, Value and Standalone DVC Properties. He must have the biggest business cards in the company.

cgt851248LARGE

For Thompson, the new job is a return to Grill. He began his 16-year career with Disney in 1997 cooking at California Grill under opening chef Clifford Pleau. He moved on to Jiko — The Cooking Place at Animal Kingdom Lodge and then to Narcoossee’s at the Grand Floridian Resort, just across the lagoon from his new office.

A native of Worthington, Ohio, Thompson, right in photo with Piasecki, graduated first in his class at Columbus State College in 1991. His training included a three-year program in an American Culinary Federation apprenticeship. He has acheived the first of three levels of the Court of Master Sommeliers.

Thompson’s wife, Victoria, also works in food and beverage at Walt Disney World Resort as a front-of-the-house manager.

California Grill is one of the restaurants considered to be among the resort’s top three best, along with Citricos and Flying Fish Cafe (now known simply as Flying Fish). Dominic Filoni was named chef de cuisine at Citricos in November after longtime chef Phillip Ponticelli moved to Golden Oak. Flying Fish is still searching for a replacement for Timonty Keating, who left the kitchen and the company earlier in the year when the Boardwalk restaurant was closed for a planned multi month renovation.

Given the overwhelming positive response we received when I first posted about the new menu, I knew we had to go and check it out. I was already a HUGE fan of the Trail’s End dinner buffet for both the quality of food and very reasonable pricing, but I had never done breakfast here even though it comes highly recommended. My problem with Trail’s End lies solely in location. If I’m looking to just go out to dinner, I’m really OK with investing a fair amount of travel time to get here via the internal bus system at Fort Wilderness. If I’m going to Magic Kingdom, The Wave breakfast is usually my option for the proximity to the park and the breakfast buffet which I would place on the same plateau, if not even higher, than Trail’s End. In the end, it’s really just a convenience thing, nothing against the quality of the buffet.

My only real complaint overall has to be the shrimp. First of all, you have to peel them, secondly, peeling them only means you are about to eat pretty much the foulest tasting shrimp on planet earth. I’d rather they just remove this from the buffet rather than replace it with another item. They are that bad.

Other than that, I was upset there was only corn muffins and not corn bread. I know this is probably just about the most childish complaint you can have, but I think the cornbread tastes slightly better than it does in muffin form.

The breakfast pizza was a solid option, fun and delicious

Fried chicken at 9am? OF COURSE I WANT SOME!

IMG_5972

They serve the “Jungle Juice” here now, under the term specialty moonshine. Nice to have it offered here.

My significant other chose to have a pretty plate…

IMG_5976

This was my first plate…

You will have to ask if you want an omelette as there is no station and the server may not even mention it. We ended up getting an omelette with the famous chili in it and it was pretty spectacular.

In review, I think I would prefer to take advantage of this brunch buffet over going during the week for just breakfast or dinner buffets. It’s a nice mix of items, the price is good (slightly more than breakfast of course), and I’m as big a fan of the brunch as I am of the dinner service. Trail’s End brunch is definitely worth your time and money, if you can spare it.

REVIEW: The Daily Poutine at Disney Springs; Disappointment Comes in 4 Flavors

The Daily Poutine opened on the border of the Marketplace and Town Center of Disney Springs back on May 15th, 2016. The stand serves traditional poutine (which are large french fries with cheese and gravy), as well as some interesting new takes on the Canadian favorite. You may be asking yourself now, “Tom, you seem to like to be the first to talk about new items at Walt Disney World, why is this review a month late?” Well, honestly, I forgot, and that’s the problem. What sounded like an exciting quick stop for loaded french fries ended up being a bit of a disappointment. We were so excited about so many other options that have opened at Disney Springs that this one kind of just got lost in the shuffle, which is pretty much what I feel the fate of this booth will be in the grand scheme of Disney Springs.

It is located just steps away from World of Disney and Amorette’s Patisserie.

There are 4 varieties of the fries offered here, as well as a nice drink selection.

IMG_5457

In WDWNT fashion, we ordered them all.

IMG_5459

We also ordered the Fireball Sangria, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I never really though to throw whiskey in sangria, but it makes for a good (and surprisingly refreshing) combination. This is a solid drink option for a hot summer day at Disney Springs.

The fries themselves are thick steak fries. They are good on their own, but as this is a “poutine” stand, the focus is on the toppings. The Italian style was my least favorite. The marinara sauce reminded me of the more awful faux-Italian counter service offerings from Disney. The cheese was barely melted as well, which didn’t help the cause.

IMG_5461

The Latin were my overall favorite. The pork was seasoned really well and the yucca, cheese, and black beans all mixed for a really good flavor, even though I’m not sure french fires are the best item to throw these toppings on.

IMG_5463

I thoroughly enjoyed the French version, as the Gruyere cheese melted onto the fries was pretty perfect. I also enjoy mushrooms, so the added taste of those in this dish was a pleasant addition to some bites.

IMG_5466

While I enjoyed the cheese curds, I am not a big fan of brown gravy which hampered my enjoyment of the Classic option.

The Daily Poutine is good, it’s just not great, and that’s a problem when it is surrounded by some really great counter service or food stand options. While the portions are large and filling, I would much rather dine at B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co., D-Luxe Burger, or even Earl of Sandwich if I was at Disney Springs looking for something fast. If time and money were no option, my choices would broaden ten-fold, leaving the Daily Poutine completely off of my radar, and that’s the issue. The Daily Poutine just isn’t good enough or priced well enough to survive in the “theme park for food” landscape that is the Disney Springs of 2016. My recommendation would be to skip this and visit any of the other establishments we have positively reviewed from Disney Springs over the last year.
