Disney and the Rose Parade: A 75-Year Tradition Continues

We’ve been showing you updates on the construction of the “Destination: Cars Land” float which will appear in the 124th Rose Parade on New Year’s Day in Pasadena, Calif., here on the Disney Parks Blog. We’re really excited about this year’s Disneyland Resort float – not only is it a tribute to the all-new Cars Land, but it also continues a 75-year tradition of Disney involvement with the annual Rose Parade in Pasadena. Disney’s relationship with the Tournament of Roses began in 1938 when characters from the newly premiered “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” were prominently featured in the parade. And of course, the Rose Queen and her Court, along with the competing Rose Bowl football teams, have visited Disneyland Resort each year since 1960 (be sure to check back here on December 26 for photos from this year’s visit).
In 1966, Walt Disney served as Grand Marshall of the Rose Parade. Later, Roy E. Disney, Walt’s nephew and the head of Disney Animation, would serve as Grand Marshall in 2000. Members of the creative teams at Walt Disney Imagineering and Disney Entertainment have served as float judges numerous times throughout the years. In 2004, Disneyland Resort presented “A Sudden Drop in Pitch,” the tallest float in Rose Parade history at 110 feet, featuring live performers dangling in a elevator attached to the top. The float’s title played off that year’s theme of “Music, Music, Music,” and the float was inspired by The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction, which opened in Disney California Adventure park that spring. The 50th Anniversary of Disneyland was celebrated in 2005 with both a dazzling Rose Parade Opening Show and a spectacular castle float titled “The Happiest Celebration on Earth.” That year’s Rose Parade also featured Mickey Mouse as Grand Marshall. Disney broke another Rose Parade record In 2006, with the longest float (150 feet) at the time in Rose Parade history. Titled “The Most Magical Celebration on Earth,” the float celebrated Disney Parks around the world. When I was younger, I recall receiving die-cast cars in my holiday stocking. For fans of Disney Racers, you can get three Disney Racers for $15.00 (plus tax). DCA Grand Re-Opening Vinys Release Today!
What a time in Disney Parks history. New resorts opening and Fantasyland construction well underway at Walt Disney World. And Cars Land and Buena Vista Street opening at Disneyland today. As I write this post, Zoe is sitting in a sea of people outside Disney’s California Adventure waiting for the gates to open up. In fact, she has been there since something like 10pm PST last night. There are two lines, one to get into the park and one to get into the merchandise building… she is in the later. There are mostly pins inside, however there are two special 9″ Vinylmation (LE 500, $54.95):

The next group of vinyls has been in DCA stores all week, but officially release today.

Disney’s California Adventure and Cars Land 2012 Explained
Finally some Disneyland Exclusives for all those California folk who have sat by and watched two straight Park series dedicated to WDW. Disney has announced a huge merchandise lineup the celebrate the opening of Carsland and the re-opening of the reimagined DCA. Here is a look at the full catalog. It is chock full of shirts, pins, coins and of course… Vinylmation.
The three limited edition pieces will be on sale at the event on June 15th in Disneyland. The other 3″ open edition figures will also be out that same day and retail for $12.95 each. For the three limited edition pieces there will be a purchase limit of only one per person and will be found in Zone 3 at the event. The event takes place at the Animation Building in DCA. Brad Paisley Preforms in Cars Land for Disney Parks Christmas Parade

Country superstar Brad Paisley recently taped a special performance at Disney California Adventure park for theDisney Parks Christmas Day Parade which airs on ABC December 25. Brad is no stranger to Radiator Springs. You may remember he joined us for the grand opening of Cars Land in June, and of course, he sang two songs for the original soundtrack of the Disney•Pixar film “Cars.” One of those songs, “Behind the Clouds,” is the song you’ll see Brad perform Christmas Day on ABC. In the Eastern time zone, tune in from 10 a.m.-noon; in the Central, Mountain and Pacific time zones, tune in from 9-11 a.m. to catch all the fun from Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts!
