Disney To Release A Live Action Version Of “Night On Bald Mountain” From “Fantasia”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is developing a live action version of the “Night On Bald Mountain” sequence from Disney’s classic animated film “Fantasia.”

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless will write the script for the project — which is in early development at the studio — based on the 1940’s animated film. The hot writing duo is also executive producing the film.

The “Night on Bald Mountain” section of Fantasia centered on a dark winged creature who raised spirits from the dead. They dance, fly through the air and enjoy an night of mayhem until they fade away as the night ends and the sun begins to rise. (Watch video below.)

Fantasia was comprised of eight animated segments that were set to pieces of classical music. Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky first created the music used in the “Night on Bald Mountain” section in 1867, and it was arranged by Leopold Stokowski for the film, introducing the now-well-known music to a much wider audience.

Sources say the live-action take will be similar to what Disney did with Maleficent, which starred Angelina Jolie as the iconic witch. Maleficent earned a spell-binding $758.4 million worldwide when it was released in May 2014.

Disney has been diving head first into its animated classics to remake them as live action versions. Following Maleficent, Cinderella was released earlier in 2015, and has earned a stellar $531.8 million worldwide. A live-action version of Beauty and the Beast will star Emma Watson; Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp are set to star in sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass for 2016; and the studio’s live-action The Jungle Book, directed by Jon Favreau, will also be released in 2016. Disney is also working on live action versions of Mulan, Dumbo (Tim Burton will direct) and a Tinker Bell story starring Reese Witherspoon.

WDWNT: The Magazine – The “Festival of Fantasy” Heads to Walt Disney World

Since 1971, the Walt Disney World Resort has delighted guests with many memorable parades. Disney’s Magic Kingdom Park is the quintessential home for these theatrical shows which incorporate beloved Disney characters and movies. There have been little-known daytime parades in the past such as the Surprise Celebration, and widely-known night-time parades such as SpectroMagic; each had the responsibility of entertaining Magic Kingdom visitors for their respective periods of time. Now that the most recently running daytime parade, Celebrate a Dream Come True, has ended, its long-anticipated replacement, Festival of Fantasy Parade, is set to make its debut next month.

Spectro Magic Parade

Many devoted fans of Walt Disney World will argue that the greatest Disney parade of all time was SpectroMagic. This show encompassed all that typically comes to mind when the word “Disney” is mentioned. Full of excitement, sparkling lights, Disney characters, and an enchanting musical score, this adored parade seemed to fit its role perfectly.

Main Street Electrical Parade

Main Street Electrical Parade

Leaving the Magic Kingdom in 2010 to be replaced by the currently active Main Street Electrical Parade, Disney stated that SpectroMagic would eventually make its return. In the summer of 2013, Disney extinguished any hopes for this parade to once again be a part of the experience of the Magic Kingdom, which shocked its fans. Although the ‘Electrical Parade’ is still greatly loved by guests, it has been unable to reach the extremely high level of success that SpectroMagic attained with guests. Now with the Festival of Fantasy Parade on its way to the Magic Kingdom, one can only wonder if the void left by SpectroMagic will soon be filled.

Festival of Fantasy will be a daytime spectacular with visually stunning and elaborate floats. Through images and the above video released by Disney, we know that the float designs will include the movies Brave, Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan, Tangled, The Little Mermaid, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Pinocchio. To the delight of the many Frozen fans, characters Anna and Elsa have been announced to be on the “Princess Garden” float.

Given that the Festival of Fantasy Parade is themed according to New Fantasyland, there is limitless creativity to be incorporated in the design of the costumes. New techniques used by the creative costuming team, such as 3D printing and 3D origami, give a unique overall appearance to the performers’ costumes. In comparison to costumes seen in other Walt Disney World parades, the remarkably innovative styles seen in the Festival of Fantasy are unprecedented. This modern look that appears throughout the entertainers’ attire and the floats is similar in style to that of Tokyo Disneyland’s Happiness is Here Parade. The modernization of both parades shows a growing trend in Disney productions to radiate contemporary feelings while simultaneously satisfying audiences by the use of cutting-edge technology and designs.

What has been your favorite Disney parade?  What are you looking forward to seeing in the Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade?

Here is a sneak peak that Disney shared with us on the upcoming parade:

WDWNT: The Magazine – Fantasia: Music Evolved Announced for Xbox One

Fantasia: Music Evolved Announced for Xbox One

by Michael Truskowski

Technology is a funny thing. A new iPhone comes out every year, and your new computer is replaced the day after you buy it, but the video game consoles are now closing in on a decade on the market. The 7th generation consoles (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii) landed in 2005/2006. After years of speculation, the 8th generation is upon us. The Nintendo Wii U hit store shelves at the end of last year (and unfortunately for Nintendo has largely stayed there), Sony “showed off” the PS4 in February (and by “showed off” I mean they talked about the console for an entire press conference without ever showing it), and just a few weeks ago, Microsoft announced the Xbox One (proving that yet again, they are incapable of numbering systems that make sense). One of the major features of the Xbox One is that the Kinect sensor, which allows for controller free game play, will go from being a mere accessory to being a standard, fully integrated part of the experience. It was Kinect Disneyland that finally persuaded me to go out and get a Kinect for my Xbox 360, a game which I reviewed for this magazine. I think I know what will be the first Kinect game I play on the One.

On June 4th, Disney announced Fantasia: Music Evolved, and upcoming game for the Xbox One (a version for the Xbox 360 will also be released). The name itself is a not so subtle nod to Halo: Combat Evolved, the game which helped define the Xbox platform (though I suspect Fantasia will involve fewer machine guns). Unlike the button mashing of Halo, this game will be all movement.

The storyline puts you in the role of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice (Mickey apparently having been furloughed due to the sequester). If you ever wished you can step into Mickey’s role, controlling your surroundings with a mere wave of your hands, then this looks to be the game for you. Under Yin Sid’s direction, you will go forth into a world that, at least in a few of the screen shots released, bear a striking resemblance to the levels from Epic Mickey. Your interactions to the music will bring the areas to life, rewarding you with increasingly complex and interesting harmonies. There is no winning or losing in this game. It’s all about creativity.

In terms of the music, this is not your grandfather’s Fantasia. In addition to classics from the film such as “Night on Bald Mountain,” Fantasia: Music Evolved will also feature the music from contemporary (or close to it) artists. Announced so far are Avicii, Bruno Mars, Fun, Kimbra (is it a sign that I am officially old that I had to look this one up?) and Queen (every music game is now contractually required to have Bohemian Rhapsody). Disney has promised music from over 25 artists, so I suspect we will learn about more of the options as the release date gets closer. The focus on more modern pop tracks has me slightly worried. Yes, it will be more appealing for the younger crowd, but I do hope that we do not lose the Fantasia feel. I will reserve judgement of course, but I secretly hope that there will be a “classic” mode somewhere in there that will give you the option to command a real symphony.

Still, the Disneyland game for Kinect was enjoyable, if flawed. This will not appeal to the hardcore gamers, but it is not meant to. I am glad to see Disney continuing to look for ways to innovate in the video game space. We have come a long way since Mickey Mousecapade. For those of you attending this week’s E3 conference, be sure to stop by the Disney Interactive booth for a hands on demo. The game is set to be released some time in 2014. Look for a detailed review here once it is.

Fantasia 5: Bacchus and Donkey

On February 22, the 5th of 8 of the Fantasia combos will be released via the Disney Vinylmation Facebook Store.

The surprise here is Eric Caszett is credited with the design of Bacchus and Donkey. We were under the impression Thomas Scott did the entire set. Like the rest, it will retail for $24.95 and be an edition size of 1500.

Fantasia G8or and Hippo

We have been waiting for this one, and Thomas Scott left it for last. The famous Gator and Hippo from Fantasia are the 8th and final two piece combo in this wonderful series. It will be released at the parks and online on June 28. Like the rest of the series, it will be $24.95 and LE 2,000.

There are many ways we thought the Gator could fit on the Mickey platform, and I think Thomas did a wonderful job. The color in the ears have always given this series and added flare. This combo is no different. The Gator’s face extends down onto the body and fits on there so well. Its all about proportions to make it look right, and this is pulled off so very well. This series has and need accessories, so the cape is perfect.

The Hippo is simple and elegant. We do have two Hippos already, but this is the first normal 3″. We have the 9″ with fabric skirt and the 3″ that was the chaser from the Disney Store’s light up series. I do want to see this one in person. As much as I like it, I might have liked a lighter shade for the Hippo just to make it pop some more. I do love the purple eye lids and other highlights that really help the design.

Fantasia 7 Offers More Pastoral Symphony

Fantasia 7 will be released at D-Streets and Online on April 26. The combo was designed by Thomas Scott, will retail for $24.95 and is LE 1500. Today, we got our first glimpse of this pair.

First up is Zeus. And here he is from the Disney film…

The second figure in the pack is Hephaestus.

And here is a screen shot of him from the film…

New December/January Release Dates

With the announcements below we confirm there will be WDW Marathon figures this year as well as another Valentine’s Day commemorative. We have yet to see the actual figures, but the marathons are called “mini medals.” So here is a look at the 2013 medals:

The Valentine’s one is anyone’s guess. We also get details about the 2013 series, a Pixar LE combo and the third Fantasia. We have no clue what order the 2013’s will be released in, but Disney released the calendar from which the figures were inspired in park stores. So i’ll find it and take a look this week. I would assume the order of release would correspond to the months they appear on the calendar. Here is a look at the 13 figures as they were on display at Mickey’s Circus.

We will have to wait until January for the 9/3 Crush and Squirt LE combo. It will have an edition size of 1250 and will retail for $64.95.

The third Fantasia combo is a Parks and Online release featuring Hop Lo & Gold Fish. There are 1500 of them and it will retail for $24.95.

Also in the mix is the seventh junior series installment and a new Disney Vacation Club Piece. The junior series is themed to space and was on display at Mickey’s Circus.

We don’t know for sure, but we can assume the DVC figure will be this design that we saw only in concept art on Vinylnation years ago.

New, Moved and Head Scratching Release Dates

This update, not going to lie, hurt my brain a little bit to process. Disney certainly does not make it easy for us. By the way, side note, and probably why I am in a bad mood while writing this… Did anyone else see that the WDW Premium Annual Passholder discounts will drop to 10% as of January 1, 2013? So as my discount gets cut in half, I can tell Disney that not only will they be getting less money from me at renewal, but I’ll be sure to purchase at least half as much merchandise as I normally do. Anyway, how about those release dates… They changed some days. Changed some locations. Added new dates and even duplicated some. Take a look.

The Disney Vacation Club Exclusive 3-inch figure (Open Edition / Retail: $14.95 ) was moved from a January 11th release date to February 15th in the parks only. It is still supposedly set for a January 11th online release. The design of this figure is not known at this time, but is presumed to be from this this concept art.

As I have been presuming for a few weeks, the January 10th release of the 3″ Run Disney figure (Commemorative / Retail: $12.95) and WDW Marathon Weekend Mini Medals (Open Edition /Retail: $1.95) will be at the Clubhouse Store at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex during the Expo that takes place before the races. How do I know these releases better than Disney itself? The odd part is, they kind of took away the part about it also being available at D-Street in Orlando. I say “kind of” because, well here is the exact wording: “ESPN Clubhouse Shop, ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex t Downtown Disney West Side in Florida”. Um, ya, ESPN is not at Downtown Disney. However, there is a later posting on the Events page about the Mini Medal accessories being released at D-Street Orlando on January 22nd. But that still still leaves the 3″ figure. I presume it will also end up at D-Street, if not on the 10th, then by the weekend. The 3″ Run Disney figure remains on the release slate for January 10th at D-Street Anaheim  The January 13th signing with artist Maria Clapsis also remains in place for 5-7pm at D-Street Orlando.

On February 1st, the February 2013 Poster Art 3-inch figure by Patty Landing (Edition Size: 2,013 / Retail: $14.95) will be released at both D-Streets. In an exciting turn of events, the exact same figure is also listed for a February 11th release… but only in Anaheim  Sorry Orlandonians, you only get it once. Here is a look at the calendar art and Vinylmation figure.

On February 22nd, both D-Streets will receive a new 2013 Easter 3″ figure designed by Billy Davis (Commemorative / $14.95). No photos of this design as of yet.

The left coast D-Street will also get a Mad T Party, Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum, 3-inch figure set (Edition Size: 1,500 / $24.95). No photos of this design as of yet either.

Photo from  Loren Javier’s flickr

Lastly, the Disney Vinylmation Facebook page store will get the Fantasia Series # 5, Baucchus & Donkey from The Pastoral Symphony, 3-inch figure set (Edition Size: 1,500 / $24.95). We did not know until this posting what characters were in sets 5 through 8. I wish they accompanied this release info with a photo, but they did not. So here they are from the movie itself.

D-Street Orlando Update 10/17/12

Just a few quick notes about some items at D-Street Orlando. They still have a handful of the LE 2500 Popcorns Clown Dumbo Variants around the store.

They also have a bunch of the LE 2000 Fantasia #1 Combos behind the counter.

And then this beautiful new 9″ Custom Fortune Teller Mickey has shown up in the display case.

It comes in a real wooden box and lights up when plugged in. The manager on duty was able to tell me it has a $2,000 price tag and the artist is Mark Seppala. Mark made at least one custom around the opening of D-Street and is also the artist behind the Park 6 Wet Paint Donald.
