A few days late, but the Figment Epcot 35 lady’s backpack was finally released today at Epcot.

CONFIRMED: Figment Funko Pop Vinyl Releasing 10/1 at Epcot

Disney has confirmed that the Figment Funko Pop Vinyl figure will be released on October 1st at Epcot.

Retailing for $19.99 each, the figure will be sold at MouseGear and ImageWorks in Future World to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the park.

Epcot Re-Imagined: Part 2 – The Imagination Pavilion

Editor’s Note: This series is a look at how one staff member would re-imagine Epcot pavilions. Previous articles in the series can be found here.

As I leave the newly-imagined Wonders Of Life, I travel over to a pavilion which has lost much imagination over the years: The Imagination Pavilion.

The attraction has suffered greatly since the removal of the original Journey Into Imagination attraction in 1998.

In its current state, Journey Into Imagination with Figment, it is a shell of its former self, and quite a sad, decrepit shell at that.

There have been long-standing rumors about different Disney IPs replacing Figment. My idea goes one step further: combining an IP with the original Journey Into Imagination attraction.

I’m calling it “Phineas and Ferb Restore Imagination” but this is only a working name for now.

One of the long-standing rumors was that the popular Disney XD animated show Phineas and Ferb would replace Figment, but it never developed further than the rumor stage.

However, Phineas and Ferb is still a valuable IP that can be integrated into the pavilion to create an original and timeless attraction.

By adding Phineas and Ferb to the Imagination Pavilion, Agent P’s World Showcase Adventure now has a tie-in somewhere else in the park. The attraction will cohesively bring together both story lines.

I’m going to explain the story of the attraction first, before explaining what changes will take place within the pavilion.

The story begins in the Flynn-Fletcher backyard, as Phineas and Ferb are trying to come up with ideas for something to do before the summer ends. After the many ideas they’ve already imagined, they come up empty, and give up for the day.

Out of nowhere appears Figment, the lovable purple dragon. Figment greets the boys, who are stunned. Figment tells them that he overheard their conversation and tells them that everyone has a sense of imagination, and no one can ever lose it. The boys don’t believe him, continuing to slouch under the tree.

Figment then tells the boys to hear him out, as he tells stories of his past. He tells them of his keeper, The Dreamfinder. He tells them of the adventures they went on, until one day, when he suddenly disappeared in his Dream Mobile.

Figment tells them that soon after, Dr. Nigel Channing found him and took him to the Imagination Institute. While Dr. Channing took good care of the dragon, he never felt at home in the institute, so he escaped, trying to find Dreamfinder, and eventually, stumbled upon the boys. Figment then asks Phineas and Ferb to come along with him to find Dreamfinder so that they can all regain their sense of imagination.

While this is happening, Agent P gets word from Major Monogram about Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, who is building an “Un-Imag-Inator” that sucks the imagination out of people. With their imagination gone, they become defenseless against Doof, who is trying to take over Epcot and the rest of central Florida.

The story switches back to Figment, Phineas, and Ferb in their search for Dreamfinder. After some time searching, the trio find him amongst rubble and debris on the second floor, trapped under his destroyed Dream Mobile.

After rescuing him from the rubble, Dreamfinder tells the three that he’s been trapped on the second floor for several decades after his world of imagination was suddenly destroyed. He says that the imagination of the world has been lost, and without his Dream Mobile, he has no way to restore imagination in anyone.

Phineas comes up with an idea to restore the Dream Mobile, so everyone can have their sense of imagination back.

Switching back to Agent P, he reaches Doof’s lair, the World ShowPlace Pavilion, where Doof traps him and tells him an elaborate backstory about when his parents took him as a child to EPCOT Center. While there, he he found the park to be boring, except for Journey Into Imagination, the one attraction he enjoyed. After its closing and its terrible replacement, he was disgusted and vowed to get revenge.

Agent P, of course, escaped Doof’s trap and stops the Un-Imag-Inator from firing onto innocent guests. Instead, the Inator backfires and shoots Doof, who loses his imagination.

By this point, Phineas and Ferb have finished re-building the Dream Mobile, and they, along with Figment and Dreamfinder, restore everyone’s sense of imagination and the ride comes back to life in an extravagant finale where “One Little Spark” is sung by the quartet.

Along with restoring the ride and everyone’s imagination, they also restore the second floor ImageWorks, which is a continuation of the attraction story.

Regarding the actual attraction building and attraction itself, the exterior will not be changed, except for a new ride marquee. The attraction will use the new trackless ride system, and the ride vehicles will be completely new. All of the existing theming will be removed and replaced with theming using colors and patterns from the original attraction.

This attraction will be longer in both track length and ride time compared to the current iteration. The current ImageWorks and part of the shop on the first floor will be removed to accommodate the lengthened track.

The show scenes will all be physical show scenes with audio-animatronic figures for whatever characters will be in each scene. There will be a new Figment animatronic, keeping to the same style, but with the newest audio-animatronic technology. The audio system in the attraction will also be replaced with new surround-sound technologies.

The Disney Vacation Club Member Lounge on the second floor will be removed and a completely new ImageWorks will be built with state-of-the-art interactive experiences for guests of all ages to enjoy, and possibly, a new Rainbow Tunnel.

The exit gift shop and bathrooms will be renovated and updated to match the new theming and color scheme of the pavilion. The original Journey Into Imagination music loop will be brought back. Also, the area formerly known as Figment’s Place will be used as a Phineas and Ferb meet-and-greet, but there will be no walking Dreamfinder or Figment.

Also, the former Magic Eye Theater will be converted into queue space since the existing ride and queue footprint will now all be used by the ride. As an added bonus, utilizing the theater space for the queue means it will be indoors and thus air-conditioned.

There is virtually no chance that this will happen, but it’s fun to imagine about what could be.

Next up: The former Innoventions/Communicore buildings.

Epcot 35th Anniversary “I Was There” T-Shirts Unveiled, Available Now Online

For whatever reason, Disney has released the “I Was There” t-shirts for Epcot’s 35th Anniversary on October 1st a month early, making them readily available now through the Shop Disney Parks app on mobile devices.

The Ringer Tee costs $34.99, available in sizes small through XXXL.

The gray tee is apparently a Passholder Exclusive, as it has the word “Passholder” below Figment in the graphic. However it is not denoted as such on the app, making it available to anyone, including non-AP purchasers. The price is $27.99 and the size ranges from small to XXXL.

Although the early release may be a mistake, the shirts can indeed be ordered through the app as of the time of posting (we successfully placed an order before posting this story). Additionally, there is free shipping offered this weekend, making this a pretty good deal. As usual, annual passholder discounts also apply through the Shop Disney Parks app.

Many more Epcot 35th items will be released leading up to and on October 1st, 2017.

PHOTOS: Disney Previews Merchandise for the 2017 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival

Expanding for a longer-than-ever 75-day run, the 22nd Epcot International Food & Wine Festivalreturns to Walt Disney World Resort from August 31 to November 13, 2017. The Disney Parks Merchandise team has developed more than 75 items celebrating the many ways guests can sip and taste their way throughout Epcot.

“Each year we look forward to designing artwork for [Epcot International Food & Wine Festival],” explained Creative Manager Doug Strayer. “The art includes nods to Epcot’s 35th Anniversary on October 1, and beloved characters like Figment and Remy. As cast members, we love this event as much as our guests. It’s fun for us to see guests at Epcot wearing the artwork we created.”

Disney Creative Group artists Richard Terpstra, Susan Foy, Dave Holbrook, and Brian Blackmore contributed to this year’s assortment. Their artwork was compiled into a style guide which merchandise product developers referenced when creating apparel, pins, home décor, accessories and more.

Fans of Figment will be delighted to find several new items featuring the lovable purple dragon. Doug said the 1980s-looking Figment artwork was inspired by a classic Epcot attraction.

“During the design phase, we kept referencing the Kitchen Kabaret attraction once located in The Land Pavilion. That food-themed show included the song ‘Veggie Veggie Fruit Fruit,’ which we couldn’t get out of our heads [laughs]. We liked the show’s art style, so we combined it with a stylized Chef Figment. It’s a fun way to salute the heritage of Epcot.”

Another nod to Epcot’s heritage is found within the Passport collection. Look carefully to see stamps containing World Showcase marketing artwork from 1982.

The Brews Around the World collection returns this year with new designs by Susan Foy. Look for the artwork on apparel and drinkware, including a new stainless steel growler and baseball cap with a bottle opener.

For the first time, Disney is introducing an “Eat to the Beat” concert T-shirt with a World Showcase-inspired guitar graphic.

Dooney & Bourke handbags with Figment and World Showcase graphics will also be released during the event. Annual Passholders will also find a specially designed Dooney & Bourke handbag along with several other Passholder Exclusive products such as pins, salt and pepper shakers, and accessories.

Finally, guests can help Remy as he ventures around Epcot to collect the ingredients for his signature dish with Remy’s Ratatouille Hide & Squeak scavenger hunt. This year, guests will have 15 spots to look for Remy in World Showcase and Future World.

Look for these items at the Festival Center located adjacent to Mission: SPACE, and at select merchandise locations throughout Epcot. Select items will also be offered on Shop Disney Parks app and the online store.

FIRST LOOK: Even More Merchandise Revealed for Epcot’s 35th Anniversary This October

We have already previewed two batches of merchandise that will be released to celebrate Epcot’s 35th anniversary this October (which can be seen here and here), but now we have even more of the merchandise line to share with you today.

While we don’t know the edition size or exact release dates of these pins, we do know they will be released on or around the anniversary date of October 1st, 2017.

The pins represent retired attractions, including the soon-to-close Universe of Energy.

The always popular hinged pins that open into three parts will be making an appearance as well.

The above pin and below boxed jumbo pin should be released on October 1st, 2017 (for obvious reasons).

The Spaceship Earth pin comes in the above box and will be rather large in size.

Among the other items being released are a keychain, magnet, and mug.

Epcot will celebrate its 35th anniversary on October 1st, 2017. No official events have been announced by Walt Disney World at this point, nor has any of this merchandise we have previewed.

A Trip Around the World

There have been a lot of construction walls around the planters and railings at the Odyssey for a while now. Some still look pretty battered like above, but some already have new floor lights in place.

For whatever reason, they laid a slightly updated map of Shanghai Disneyland over the old one. It’s not all that different, but maybe slightly easier to see because the overall image of the park is larger.

The Outpost in Africa is back now selling jewelry made from seeds and other natural ingredients.

I didn’t notice the “no photography” sign until I after I took this, but how will a picture of the jewelry hurt the sale of it? I understand pictures of art and then you could print them out, but this seems odd.

Disney is Surveying Epcot Guests About Figment, May Impact Character’s Future in Park Overhaul

General park surveys at Walt Disney World aren’t uncommon, in fact, you’ll see Disney research cast members out and about on the daily recruiting guests to take these upon their return home. Interestingly enough, the general surveys about Epcot that guests are receiving now include a questionnaire about the park’s mascot, Figment.

Figment is a character who dates back to the earliest days of the park and the original Journey Into Imagination attraction, which operated from 1983 until 1998. When the replacement attraction opened in 1999 with little to no Figment (and was also the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life), thousands of guests complained that he was gone (and that the ride was a piece of garbage). The requests were so numerous that Disney was forced to close the attraction only 2 years later and overhaul it to add Figment back in 2002. Sadly, this wasn’t a vast improvement, and now Journey Into Imagination with Figment is just months away from somehow outliving the 15.5 year run of the original attraction, which was often considered the by fans to be the greatest theme park ride ever built.

Of course, Bob Chapek officially announced that Disney Imagineers are hard at work at a plan to conduct a massive overhaul of the park, one that would likely include a replacement or update of the current Imagination pavilion, home to Figment. Sadly, it seems as though Figment could find himself without an attraction again if he doesn’t prove that he is still relevant to most park guests. Rumors have persisted that an IP-based attraction will replace the Imagination pavilion, but we won’t know for sure until Disney makes some sort of announcement, possibly at the D23 Expo in July.

Jim Shore Figment Statue and Signing Event Announced

On Friday May 12th and Saturday May 13th, you can get a chance to see Disney Folk Artist Jim Shore at Disney World. He will be showcasing his brand new Figment figurine that will be available for sale starting that weekend.

The Figment figurine is made out of all hand-crafted  stone resin with the look of carved wood and has been hand-painted. Figment stands at roughly 6” high. It’s dimensions are approx. 6”H x 3”D x 3.75”W. He will on sale for $45 plus tax. The maximum any one guest may purchase is 2 of these pieces.
