PHOTOS, VIDEO: Mary Blair and Herbert Ryman Art Exhibits at the Epcot International Festival of the Arts

The Epcot International Festival of the Arts is home to two art exhibits that celebrate two of the most famous and influential Disney artists of all-time, Mary Blair and Herbert Ryman.

The festival certainly has a lot of offerings which I would consider to be pandering to Disney fans, and art exhibits featuring these two artists certainly fit that bill. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am overjoyed to see the work of Blair and Ryman on display, but it almost feels like a desperate attempt to draw in more annual passholders at the inaugural Festival of the Arts, especially after seeing just how small the two exhibits are.

For as small as they are, I appreciate the effort, but I hope (should the festival return in 2018) that these types of exhibits will be expanded into a larger space next year. For now, they are relegated to rather small areas of the Odyssey Festival Showplace, on the left and right sides of the seminar area.

The exhibits are open Friday-Monday now through February 20th, 2017 as part of the Epcot International Festival of the Arts.

Horizons 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Shirt Now Available

I still remember the mantra of  Horizons – “If we can dream it, we can do it.”  Since its closing  in 1999, many Disney Parks guests have truly missed the Horizons attraction. With its glimpse into 21st century living, “on land, sea and even in outer space,” guests were able to experience visions of the future.

Horizons operated at Epcot from October 1, 1983 to January 9, 1999, and Walt Disney World is now celebrating the 30th Anniversary premiere of the attraction. The Disney Parks online store will offer an exclusive anniversary T-shirt from November 21-25, 2013.

The artwork for this shirt was created by Disney Design Group artist Casey Jones.  His design shows the iconic robot butler along with the attraction’s signature marquee on the front of the shirt. Casey also included the iconic quote, “If we can dream it, we can do it,” which was found just inside the attraction’s entrance.

Some guests may remember  “choosing your own flight path back to the FuturePort” at the end of the attraction; the back of the shirt is inspired by this “choose your own” element. Casey decided to feature three different graphics for the back of the shirt – Mesa Verde, Sea Castle Resort and Omega Centauri.

He partnered with Steven Vagnini from the Walt Disney Archives in Burbank, California. The two collaborated to bring these reference images to the shirt design. The front of the shirt will remain the same for each order, but customers can choose the logo they want printed on the back of the shirt.

Extinct Attractions Return to WDW in 2010

Some exciting merchandise news released today by the What’s HapPINing Blog:

As promised, here is a first look at a new Pin of the Month collection coming to the Walt Disney World® Resort in 2010. Titled “Then and Now,” each pin in this collection will salute a current Disney attraction and its predecessor. This collection will be released starting in January 2010, and each pin will have an edition size of 1000.

The artwork for this collection was created by Disney Design Group Artist Mike Sullivan. We love the design of this pin – like we are looking into the “ThenandNow-O-Matic 3000.” For some reason, the spinner design reminds us a machine that could have been found in a Penny Arcade.

Other attractions in this collection will include:

  • Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor – The Timekeeper
  • Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin – if you had wings
  • Test Track – World of Motion

We’ve always wanted to take the time to do anything with our wings in a world where it is fun to be free.
