Update: 4/11/11 The Playwright visited the NYC Disney Store this morning and emailed us some pictures. A couple things to note: The new box is taller with a larger open window front design and an artist card is included.

Update: 4/9/11 Vinylmation.com’s blog confirmed the edition size as 1540. They also listed the price at $49.95. They also will be individually numbered.

3/31/11 Disney’s official Facebook page released this image of a new 9″ LE Vinylmation that will released on April 10th exclusive to the NYC Times Square Disney Store. This design is by Marcella Lau. Confirmed LE of 1540.

Then Disney’s blog released a turn around of the figure. Here’s the back side!

“I really like the simple design of this piece. If it were a 3″ I’d definitely purchase it. Well, if I found my way to NYC. It would look really cool with the artist’s signature on the head.” -M.C.

What does a Dog, a Hippo, a Whale and a Wizard have in common?

If you answered, “they all showed up on a store shelf at the NYC Times Square Disney Store in Vinylmation form”, you have amazing and scary powers… because you’re right.

Dabid’s Blog reports they found some Merlins, Bolts, Willie the Whales, and Hyacinth the Hippos at the NYC Times Square Disney Store back on January 15th! Dabid has a review and some great pics of Bolt that you can see here: Dabid’s Vinylmation Bolt Blog Post. The highlight for me has to be Bolt’s dog tag. It’s an accessory piece that hangs off Bolt’s neck (see left).

A few days later, Dabid posted some pics and a review of the 9″ Merlin. Merlin’s beard takes up much of the front of the vinyl and the back shows his robes and “magical sparkles” (see right). Dabid says these look fantastic up close.

Disney has not officially announced a released date for these figures, but they seemed to pop up around the country and this is our first confirmation with photos that they are (or were on January 15th) on the store shelves at the Times Square Disney Store.

Waiting in line…

The New York City Disney Store will be opening today at 9 am (EST) for a soft opening before the official Grand Opening on November 9th.

Destination Vinylmation NYC reporter Lori will be reporting from NYC Disney Store for us. US City Exclusives… Now Less Exclusive

On the heals of the UK Disney Store Online’s release of the London exclusive Vinylmation, the US Disney Store Online has followed suit with select NYC exclusive figures now available for cyber purchase.

Only two of the 9″ figures are available… Hey Taxi and New York, New York

The interesting note here is the price. Although $44.95 is the original price, if you were to go to the NYC Times Square Store to purchase them, they are discounted to $30 as of about a week ago. Vinylmation are not the only city specific items popping up online. The Disney Store Online now has a full section of the website dedicated to some of their big city Disney Stores.

You can go online to purchase select merchandise from NYC, Chicago, San Francisco and Hawaii. No Vinylmation in any other city yet, but look at this ad:

Vinylmation is the product they feature on the generic ad for this section of the online store. This leads me to believe other city specific figures will be online soon as well. We do know, the Honolulu, Hawaii Disney Store will take mail orders for the Tiki Mickey due out October 4. So since they are already willing to ship, I suppose the thinking is, why not make the process easier for Disney, and the guest, and let everyone purchase them online. I’m not a big fan of this shift. A NYC tee shirt or Chicago coffee mug are one thing, but placing collectibles online like this takes away from that specialness of the item. We talked about this on the latest podcast after finding out about the London vinyls. What are your thoughts on city specifics being made available online?

NYC: The Junior Apple? Exclusive Jr Vinylmation

Update: 9/27/11 Disney says the surprise release of these Jr Keychains was very popular and that more shipments are on the way. We also updated some pictures below.

The Playwright always has his finger on the pulse of the NYC Times Square Disney Store. They have just put an unannounced release on the shelves. Jr versions of some of their exclusive 3″ styles. They retail for $9.95 a piece and are limited to 5 per style per guest.

I think these look really good and will sell very, very well to tourists passing through the Times Square Store as little NYC themed Disney souvenirs. What a great product in terms of marketing.
