Dirk Wallen’s 1/11/13 Magic Kingdom Photo Report

WDWNT Reporter Dirk Wallen visited the Magic Kingdom earlier today and has some great newsworthy photos to share with us (including our first look at the Big Thunder Mountain interactive queue), so let’s take a look:

More RFID entrances being installed at the Magic Kingdom

Kodak references still up at Town Square Theater

Plenty of Valentine’s Day treats available already

Some of the Hall of Champions facade is behind tarps again

The Adventureland Veranda is behind tarps now

This area next to Aloha Isle is behind tarps now too. We think it might be related to the Adventureland interactive game

Splash Mountain is closed until March

The ride is drained and a lot of the ride has already been ripped up

Seemingly overnight, props have been installed in the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad queue

We can see a lot of things labeled “explosives”

For a queue that has always been pretty bland, it actually looks nice now

FastPass+ kiosk in the queue

A look across the Rivers of America at the new Fantasyland/Liberty Square pathway

The Tangled restrooms are looking great

Looks like they are almost done

No visible progress on Princess Fairytale Hall

The Cheshire Cafe sign is back

A new Walt Disney pin set was released with images of him on luggage

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom now has a mystery pin set

The Magic Kingdom map has changed again and for the first time in my lifetime, it does not have a Kodak logo

PhotoPass now graces the back cover instead of Kodak

Introducing… Disney PhotoPass Booths?

We’ve seen some interesting changes to Disney PhotoPass recently, but the most interesting has to be this booth I came across at the Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. Arcade:

I thought at first it was just a photo booth sponsored by PhotoPass, but is is more than that

You can scan a PhotoPass card

Not only can you print photos from the booth, but you can now access photos and video from the booth using your PhotoPass card

Pretty neat, huh? What do you think about Disney PhotoPass booths?

PhotoPass Introduces “Disney Attractions+” for On-Ride Photos

A lot has been changing in the world of Disney PhotoPass recently (including the new logo seen above), but the biggest change has to be the new offering of Disney Attractions+. Here is an official description of the new service directly from Disney:

Disney Attractions+ is available for purchase at any of the participating Attractions.

I personally don’t use PhotoPass often, but I think this is a really great deal for those who love on-ride photos. What do you think?

Space Mountain is Cleared for Launch

The Disney Parks Blog posted more information on Space Mountain’s on-going refurbishment this morning:

Space Mountain
We have more details to share about the Space Mountain attraction at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park as renovation work wraps up.

As you know, the classic Space Mountain experience still exists — it’s just being updated with new technology and 21st century gadgetry. Inside the attraction, there’s new lighting as well as special “darkening” effects. And you’ll see updated color schemes for rocket capsules, line and load areas. Imagineers worked with Walt Disney World Facilities Asset Management for even more enhancements, including new paint, carpet, seat fabric and other décor elements.

But what caught my attention during a recent walkthrough were details about track upgrades. It’s the same track layout and overall look and feel but workers integrated new technology into the track while not changing the classic Space Mountain ride experience. “As technology evolves, it helps us enhance those elements without losing any essence of the attraction,” Walt Disney Imagineering Senior Show Designer Alex Wright says.

You should also know that a ride photo system will capture guests during their space flights on Space Mountain. It’ll utilize Disney’s Photopass, allowing you to access, share and purchase photos during and after a visit.

Alex says he thinks you’ll be “pleasantly surprised” with the enhancements.

In an update to yesterday’s confirmation of on-ride photo being added to the attraction, it now appears Space Mountain will utilize a similar system to Test Track at Epcot, where guests insert their Photopass cards into a machine to retrieve and save their photo.

Be sure to stay tuned to WDW News Today as we get more information on Space Mountain’s imminent re-launch.
