Ep. 080 Tomorrowland Space Suit In this episode we review all the news brought to us at the WDW Trade Night. Pixar, Park Starz, Comic Con, Park 9 and Popcorns all make headlines. We also have Annemarie stop by to give her two cents on the topics and talk about her latest custom. And of course we dive into your comments in the Mystery Mail Bag. |
Up and Out
Almost as fast as Carl and Ellie appeared on the DisneyStore.com last night around Midnight PST… they were gone.
By all accounts they were available for around 20 minutes. But already there are accounts of confirmation emails yet DSO doesn’t show record of your purchase. People adding items to carts, but not able to check out. Slow loading pages where the figures could not be accessed. I was among the frustrated that went to add a set to my cart only to find them not available on the next page. Tell us your story and let us know what time you were or were not able to grab this combo set? And what does this mean for the rest of the week’s purchases?
Also, if you are a Comic Con attendee, did you try to purchase through your QR code yet? I’m hearing that avenue says Sold Out as well, but I do not have any confirmation if they were ever available through that route.
Spotlight On: Custom Artist Aaralyn
On the opening day of the new Disney Pixar film Brave, it is fitting to see a custom featuring the heroine Merida. This one comes to us from Aaralyn. I was sad to hear it is already sold out, but Aaralyn has many more customs to look at and order at her website: www.customsbyaaralyn.com. Now let’s take a look at this custom set.
“As soon as I saw the trailers for Brave, I knew it was going to be an amazing movie. The beauty of the animation inspired me to create this custom set. I attended the midnight premier of the movie, and I have to say it lived up to all my expectations and more. It was a phenomenal film.” – Aaralyn
Merida is designed on a 9″ Vinylmation and comes with a custom bow! The bear cubs are expertly painted onto three 3″ vinyls.
“Personally I think Brave is my new favorite Pixar film because there are not many Disney films that portray the entire family unit as well as Brave does. The interactions and emotions between the characters along with the stunning animation and storyline ranks it number one in my book. And of course, there are the baby bears, and I can’t resist cute things.” – Aaralyn

More Pixar Combos Coming (After) Up?
On July 12, a two figure 3″ combo set featuring Carl and Ellie from Up will release at Comic Con and Online. It was great to see them in person with the packaging at the WDW Trade Night. But it wasn’t just the phenomenal designs on the figures that caught my eye. The box, which features pictures of Pixar characters from all the movies, says “Vinylmation Pixar Disney #1”. Meaning… we are to see more Pixar combos coming down the line!
I have been craving this. Especially after it became clear the Animation series is staying away from Pixar. So ever since the Lightning and Mater 2 pack, I have been saying this is the perfect way to present the Pixar universe characters to us. I am super excited! I hope some Bug’s Life vinyls are just over the horizon. Maybe a Marlin and Dory combo? Remy and Linguini? What combos would you like to see in this collection?
Brave Vinylmation Announced
Disney has announced a set of Vinylmation based on the upcoming Pixar film Brave. We are not sure the nature of this set (LE, Blind Box, Open Window…) but it does appear it will be released on May 25th along side an artist signing with Ron Cohee on Friday, May 25 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at D-Street Orlando. (all pictures copyright Disney)
We also do not know the set size or the character selection at this point. We can assume it includes the lead heroine Merida (seen above), but little is even known about the rest of the characters to speculate. I visited the Pixar Brave website where there are a ton of screen shots, videos and downloads… as well as character descriptions. A couple options would be Merida’s horse, Angus:
A human and animal 2-pack is a likely option. Or possibly King Fergus:
After seeing the mold modifications to allow for better John Carter figures, that peg leg would be an incredible addition to the Vinylmation universe. This vinyl news comes on the heals of the announcement that the US movie release date has been changed to July 15. If you have not seen it already, here is the trailer for Brave. It seems to keep in the Pixar tradition of a truly beautiful looking film.
Brave New Vinylmation Set
Update 5/2/12 According to an interview with Steven Miller on Attractions Magazine this Brave set will be available at the Parks sometime after the May 4th Facebook Store release date.
On the Disney Parks Blog, in an article about the new Vinylmation Facebook Store, Disney unveiled the Brave set we were all anticipating. It is based on the new Pixar film to be released in the US on June 22.
The set will include a 3″ Merida and 3 Jrs featuring “The Triplets”. According to the Disney Parks Blog article, this set will release on May 4th as a Facebook store exclusive. The great thing is, all items bought via the Facebook store, are just like purchasing items via the DisneyStore.com. You can add more items to your cart, use any promo codes, and check out with your already established account. For a full explanation of the Facebook Store, check out our previous article. As for the Brave set itself, we first had word about it a few weeks back when Disney posted an event on their site… May 25th in Orlando: “Join us for the signing of Brave set and Phineas & Ferb Series (open edition) with Ron Cohee on Friday, May 25 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at D-Street.” So a May 4th online release of this set gives collectors time to order and receive it before the signing. As for the set itself, Merida looks great and detailed with shadowing and nice use of ears, but the triplets seem to me a bit… redundant. A look at the trailers and official movie website show plenty of great looking characters to pull from. However, the 3″ and Jr approach here make sense given the characters, so that I applaud. Which do you anticipate more, this new set or the film itself?
The Pixar Alphabet According to Mike Boon
It’s not Vinylmation, but artist Mike Boon has caught my eye with his latest work. Mike, who previously brought us the Muppets speculation articles complete with concept art, has put together an alphabet using Pixar characters. Take a look.
