Donald Duck Popcorns!

The second series of Popcorns is almost upon us and it appears Donald Duck will lead the charge.

This figure is set to be released on August 9th. A few interesting notes… it will be an LE of 2500. Will all future Popcorns be an LE? Or is this a variant Donald? Only variants from series one had an LE. We did know there would be a Donald in Popcorns series 2, it was told to us by Disney and we saw his concept art on the boxes from series one. And this product shot does look a little different to me, so a variant is a possibility.

It will also retail for $19.95. Originally Popcorns were priced at $24.95, then went on sale online for $5 around Christmas, then settled in at $19.95 online and in the parks. So that is a welcome change. I love the look of the above Donald and Maria Clapsis is credited with the design. Doug Strayer was credited with all of series one. One final note, we do still expect to see a Stitch and Frankenweenie as part of this second series.

Hot & Fresh Preview of Popcorns Series 2

I was one of the biggest fans of Popcorns when I got my hands on it last Fall, unfortunately, the second series does not look nearly as strong. We will see 4 figures from Popcorns 2 release on September 6th at the parks and online. They will retail for $19.95… a much needed price drop from the ridiculous $24.95 that the first series began at. That series quickly went on sale for $5 online where many people picked them up and realized it was a quality product. Now, they settled in at $20, and that seems about right. Series 1 delivered some great characters with not only a unique, but a pleasing stylistic design. This time around, at least out of the four we see, I don’t have a connection to one of the characters and on a couple others the design is just scary.

There is no way around it, Ursula looks weird. She looks more like a Blooper from Super Mario Bros. than a stylistic version of The Little Mermaid’s Villain.

Then there is Stitch. He has been done in so many ways and I thought it was impossible to not make Stitch look adorable… until now.

Popcorns is such a cute, playful platform and Stitch fits those characteristics… but this just looks plain scary. It looks like a character out of an intentionally cheap looking cartoon. Then there is Sparky. I never really liked the movie and therefore have no connection here.

Now stop me if I have my Donald Duck Club blinders on here, but I think Donald is the only saving grace in this set. He looks amazing and i gushed over him when I first saw him about a month ago. It will be the only one from series 2 I buy, even if we get another $5 deal.

Mickey’s Circus- Popcorns

We learned a lot about Popcorns at Mickey’s Circus including the actual creation of the series.

Artist Doug Stayer created this art that Thomas Scott decided to turn into a series of Vinylmation. The series will be released in waves. No set number of figures in each wave, but it seems that they will let us know what will be in each series. If you didn’t know by now, Popcorns is a new platform for Vinylmation that will be sold in open window, popcorn shaped, boxes. Each will be based on Characters from the Disney movies or cartoons. The first series will be released at D-Streets on September 28th and retail for $24.95 (even the variants).

This series will include: Chip/Dale, Chernabog, Jack Skellington, Kermit, Sully, Dumbo, Goofy, Mickey

Pluto (online exclusive).

As far as variants go, there are at least 2 in the first series and they are both LE 2500. A Black and White Mickey that debuted at Comic Con and can still be found for sale at DisneyStore.com and a Clown face Dumbo. The Dumbo was first sold at Mickey’s Circus, but can now, as of 9/11, be found at D-Street Orlando.

The second series will be released next fall, but we already have a peak at two of the figures, Frankenweenie and Stitch.
