REVIEW: Nomad Lounge at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Adds Decadent Dessert Churros to the Menu

We have reviewed the Nomad Lounge at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park a lot in the last year, so please check those out if you want to know about all of the drinks and other food available here:

Nomad Lounge if of course attached to the Tiffins restaurant in the Discovery Island section of the park, just before what will soon be the bridge leading guests into Pandora: The World of AVATAR. Another change has made its way to the menu as the establishment gets ready for the bigger crowds that Pandora will bring this May: gone is the Taste of Tiffins dessert, replaced with the lounge exclusive churros…

 width=

Churros with Vanilla Crema and Chili Strawberry Dipping Sauces ($9.00)

 width=

Churros, new dessert menu offering at Nomad Lounge, Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park

The order comes with five small churros in a miniature frying basket… because that makes sense in Africa or Asia I guess…

The churros are nothing special. They are much softer than the theme park cart variety, but what makes them at least enjoyable is the dipping sauces provided. Separately, the Vanilla Crema and Strawberry Chili sauces are not remarkable flavors, but mixed together we found much better results. If you think a vanilla-strawberry-chili flavor sounds good, than these are at least worth ordering once.

Is this better than the Taste of Tiffins dessert that is no longer offered? No. My guess is that there sales for the dessert were not very high, so they went with something that more theme-park-goers would understand and maybe be excited to try.

While this is a slight downgrade, I still stand by that Nomad Lounge is one of the very best bars in all of Walt Disney World for their drink menu alone. It’s for sure the absolute best in any of the theme parks. Sure, there are a few good small bites here as well, but the drinks are the main event.

REVIEW: Rivers of Light Dining Packages at Animal Kingdom; Tusker House or Tiffins? FastPass or Standby?

Similar to the long running Fantasmic! dining package offered at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom has a Rivers of Light dining package which offers a meal at one of their table service restaurants and a preferred viewing area for their nighttime spectacular. In our continuing effort to review all dining experiences at Walt Disney World for you, we decided to go try both of the available package restaurants and see if the package was worth it.

Rivers of Light, Disney's Animal Kingdom

Rivers of Light, Disney’s Animal Kingdom

First, all of the information you will need to know. Rivers of Light is the new nighttime spectacular at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park, typically performing just once a night on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays until April, but then moving to a nightly schedule. During the Summer months, it is expected that there will be two (maybe even three) shows per evening. Once the second shows become standard, the dining packages will offer guests a ticket to either the 1st or 2nd show in a special viewing area on the Dinoland side of the theater.

The dining package is currently offered at Tusker House Restaurant and Tiffins. Both are Disney Dining Plan Eligible.

At Tusker House, you’ll find a bountiful buffet with African flavors. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals ranging between 8am and 2.5 hours before the last Rivers of Light showtime of the evening are available.
Breakfast is $39.00 for adults, $24.00 children ages 3 to 9; Lunch/Dinner is $52.00 for adults; $32.00 children ages 3 to 9.

Tiffins is a signature restaurant where you can enjoy a choice of appetizer, entrée and dessert (plus non-alcoholic beverage) from a menu featuring mouth-watering delights from around the globe. Lunch and dinner meals are available here, starting at 11:30AM and 3 hours before the last Rivers of Light showtime of the evening. The price is $67.00 adults, $26.00 children ages 3 to 9.

No discounts can be applied to these packages and any alcoholic drinks are not included.

After your meal is complete, you are handed your tickets to Rivers of Light and instructed to show up at the seating area 15 to 35 minutes prior to showtime. I’ll get more in-depth with where and when you should go towards the end of this post, but let’s start with our experiences at both of these restaurants.

Tiffins

 width=

We have been to Tiffins a lot and reviewed nearly the entire menu at this point, so you will want to check out these reviews to cover everything we have already tried (including all of the drinks at Nomad Lounge, which can be ordered from your table at Tiffins)…

While there are just three reviews linked above, I have been to Tiffins a lot more than that. It may in fact be my favorite restaurant at Walt Disney World, providing some of the absolute best meals I have ever eaten in my life.

While the package is a bit pricey at $67.00 for an adult, you can obtain that value quite easily with a $14-16 appetizer, a $42-53 entree, a $10-12 dessert, and a nonalcoholic drink. If you stay in these price ranges, you will end up with a discounted meal that would typically cost between $70 and $86 for just $67. Obviously, for lunch, you will want to stay away from the Taste of Tiffins meals as they will not provide a good value for what you are paying.

Here is the current menu of appetizers, entrees, and desserts at Tiffins, slightly altered since our previously review visits:

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

New from past visits was the Duo of Lamb, so I had to try it…

Duo of Lamb ($41)

 width=

Ethiopian Coffee Butter-infused Lamb Loin, Boerewors, Soubise, Chakalaka, Tamarind Barbecue, Leek Ash

I am not one to typically order lamb, but this was phenomenal. The leek ash on the edge of the plate is intended to be an accompaniment for the lamb, and when you rub the lamb in it, it is absolutely glorious. I would highly recommend this is you are looking for something outside of the seafood or the short rib.

The Rest

If you have read the previous reviews, then you know about the other highlights of the menu, and they are still there. Sadly, the halibut dish is now swordfish for the time being (seasonally available), but otherwise, all of my other recommendations for Tiffins still stand.

The whole fried fish at Tiffins, which I always include just for laughs at people who can't handle it...

Tiffins is going to offer you unparalleled service and meals. I could see those with children wanting to pick Tusker House for the package (or to save some money as the Tiffins version is a little more expensive), but I can’t imagine anyone reading this site would be disappointed in dining here, even when it is almost $70.00.

Tusker House

On the opposite side of the spectrum is the Tusker House restaurant, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner as a character buffet. The characters you can meet here include Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, and Goofy, all in Safari outfits.

 width=

 width=

As you can see above, the characters are fun (as always), but the food is an entirely different story…

Why do we have a picture of chocolate milk, pickles, chicken, pap, and the seven (yeah, seven) layer bar? Because this is what we enjoyed. That’s practically it.

OK, maybe we did this just for comedic effect, but the two main dishes were awful. Both the peri-peri salmon and the mojo pork from the carving station were near flavorless. I’m not sure I could really recommend a buffet where the two highest cost items aren’t good. In my experience, that is mostly what you are paying for as they would be the most expensive items at a normal table service restaurant, so you kind of want those to be good.

I’ve had a few dinners here before, so I was surprised at how bad our experience was. Many dishes had degraded in quality and the time it took the staff to replenish empty dishes was insane. There was two desserts that were listed and ran out, but did not become available again during the last 30 minutes of our meal. How does a dish from the buffet vanish for over 30 minutes? That’s poor show.

No thanks, I'll pass on the bread pudding at Tusker House...

No thanks, I’ll pass on the bread pudding at Tusker House…

I usually write longer reviews than this, but there isn’t much more to say. There was a few things that were good, but a lot was bad. In fact, the bred pudding should be used as a torture device.

My recommendation here would be to do breakfast at Tusker House if you absolutely need to eat here. Breakfast is cheaper, offers the same characters, and I feel is abetter value overall. If you can feel good about just wearing a bunch of side dishes at a buffet, then you will likely survive your Tusker House experience. Otherwise, Tiffins is where you will want to go for lunch or dinner.

Rivers of Light Dining Package and Show Viewing Tips

If you are doing the dining package, you will be given tickets for everyone in your dining party to see Rivers of Light from a special dining section. That being said, if there is a second show added and no dining packages offered for it, then standby guests can get in this area for the second show. This will not be a regular occurrence during the late spring and summer months as the packages will cover both announced shows.

Rivers of Light Dining Package tickets. They sadly rip these in half when you get to the viewing area...

Rivers of Light Dining Package tickets. They sadly rip these in half when you get to the viewing area…

Having seen the show from seven (yeah, seven) different locations so far, I’m going to give you my thoughts on the various viewing locations within the Discovery River Theater, not just for the dining package.

 width=

The dining package entrance is located just across from the entrance of the Theater in the Wild, home to Finding Nemo: The Musical. This entrance will typically open up a little before 6pm for a 7:15pm show, despite the tickets telling guests to arrive only 15-35 minutes prior to show. A good rule of thumb is to ask cast members working at the theater when they will let guests in if you are concerned about getting in here early to pick your seats.

 width=

Above is the view from our dining package seats, practically dead-center for the show.

 width=

These two sections make-up the entire dining package area, with the standby seating beginning in the area where the benches go further back.

 width=

There is wheelchair accessible seating towards the bottom for those with the need and their families/friends, but the row above offers seats with the most unobstructed views of the show. My recommendation would be to get here early and try to get this slightly-raised second row that does not exist in every viewing area.

Here is video from our view in the Dining Package section:

[vimeo 204676987 w=640 h=360]

Seating chart (as Doc Brown said, please exclude the crudeness)

Seating chart (as Doc Brown said, please exclude the crudeness)

I do like the dining section, but my favorite view of Rivers of Light would have to be from section D in the FastPass area. If you want to sit here, you will need to be there when they start allowing FastPass guests into the viewing area, as this section is typically the first to go. Similar to dining, FastPass+ seating has opened at 5:50-6pm for 7:15 shows, but you will see a line forming shortly before that.

Here is a video taken from section D on the Asia side:

[vimeo 203552673 w=640 h=360]

Section C isn’t bad either, but D is pretty perfect. I’m sure E is great, but this is reserved for some reason, so I haven’t had the chance to sit there. Only guests with a FastPass+ are allowed on the Asia viewing side (provided it fills up completely, which it most likely will).

The view of the show's finale from section D

The view of the show’s finale from section D

Guests in wheelchairs and their party have access to the bottom rows of sections on the FastPass side as well, which would provide an awesome seat in sections E or D, right against the water’s edge. This show does not have splash zones, so you are assured to stay dry, unlike at Fantasmic when you sit towards the bottom. For other guests, I suggest being up 1-2 rows from the bottom for what we thought to be the best view of the show on the FastPass+ side in Asia.

With FastPass+ reservations filling up at 30 days out, the dining package is quickly becoming an important weapon for trip planners without a FastPass reservation. Honestly, if you are going to do Tusker House breakfast already, or want a good deal on a Tiffins meal, I recommend it. It isn’t my favorite view of the show, but it is a close second. Otherwise, you’re going to need to be on the ball and ready to book FastPass+ reservations for Rivers of Light as soon as they are available to you.

If neither of these options works out for you, there is always the standby line, which goes through the path near Dinoland U.S.A. up to the Discovery River Theater. These lines have been LONG though (some reporting waiting over 2.5 hours prior to showtime for a better seat), and I’m not sure that standing in line for that long to sit (or stand) in sections U, M, N, O, R, S, T, or V is worth it. If this is your only option, then go for it, but otherwise, I wouldn’t bother. If you do HAVE to do standby, try for the second show (if available). Same as Fantasmic!, this will be less crowded and offer a shorter wait at least, albeit with a view not preferable to dining package or most FastPass+ seats. There is also some viewing available on the bridge, between Dinoland and Asia which fills up pretty early and only holds roughly 40-50 guests in my estimation. If you get there early enough to be front row in that standing-room only section, it should offer an OK view of the show.

Another view from section D

Another view from section D

Overall, many WDWNT staffers agree the Asia side is best for viewing, but again, the dining package area is a suitable runner-up. There’s something about section D that is just more pleasing to the eyes, and the Asia side offers better views of one of the shaman boats in the show.

BREAKING: Rivers of Light Opening Date Announced; Dining Packages Now On Sale

Well, it has finally happened… Disney has announced the start date for Rivers of Light at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and dining package information for the show.

 width=

Rivers of Light will begin performances on February 17th, 2017 with just one show per night (that one in particular being at 7:15PM). The show will be presented once nightly (according to the DisneyWorld.com calendar) only on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays until April 8th, when it then becomes a nightly offering. The February 17th show is the only Friday it is offered until April for some reason. April 9th was the first night on the schedule that I could find offering two shows. You can check for showtimes on the official page here (subject to change until any official announcement is made later today).

FastPass+ booking for the show is now open as well.

 width=

Rivers of Light Dining Packages are available now for all show dates. The only date it is not offered after April 8th is May 24th, 2017, which we assume will be because of a media event for the opening of Pandora: The World of AVATAR. No Rivers of Light shows are scheduled for that evening.

Tusker House has breakfast, starting at $39.00 adults, $23.00 children ages 3 to 9; Lunch/Dinner, starting at $52.00 adults, $32.00 children ages 3 to 9.

Tiffins has Lunch/Dinner starting at $67.00 adults, $26 children ages 3 to 9.

REVIEW: Move Over Polynesian, New Chicken Wings at Nomad Lounge Might Be Better

We have reviewed Nomad Lounge at Disney’s Animal Kingdom a lot. That’s probably because we go there a lot, but typically for the drink menu alone. A few weeks ago, we reviewed a pretty massive menu overhaul for the establishment, most of which was very positive. Well, even though that wasn’t very long ago, Nomad Lounge is changing things up once again.

Nomad Lounge menu, Disney's Animal Kingdom

Nomad Lounge menu, Disney’s Animal Kingdom

While many guests joked about the old Indian Butter Chicken Wings serving being only 3 wings in size, the last menu overhaul brought the serving portion up to 5. I always enjoyed these, so I was pretty surprised when I found new wings on the menu during a recent visit. The Indian wings have been replaced with “Asian Barbecue Chicken Wings”. If you know me by now, you know well enough that I had to order them and try them out. Let’s see how they stack up to the old…

Asian Barbecue Chicken Wings ($9)

Asian Barbecue Chicken Wings ($9), Nomad Lounge

Asian Barbecue Chicken Wings ($9), Nomad Lounge

Upon arriving at the table, all I can think about was how much they looked like the infamous “sticky wings” available at Disney’s Polynesian Resort. Once I picked one up to eat it, there were some noticeable flavor similarities between the two as well, but there was something more pleasant about these wings. There is definitely more of a barbecue sauce flavor to these than their rivals at the Polynesian, and I think it makes these a little better (in my opinion at least).

Asian Barbecue Chicken Wings ($9), Nomad Lounge

Asian Barbecue Chicken Wings ($9), Nomad Lounge

On their own, I don’t think that $9 for 5 wings is the end of the world, and these are quite good. You have to remember you are at Disney World, and on top of that, you are in a bar at a signature dining experience. The fact that Disney went and made the portions a little better is a nice effort and I find that I have enjoyed dining at Nomad Lounge much more since then.

Of course, Nomad Lounge still has my favorite drink menu at Walt Disney World, which is still reason enough to visit. So the next time you’re at Animal Kingdom and you want to take your friends or family (or maybe your favorite Disney blogger) somewhere for great drinks and good food, this would most certainly be the place to go.

Seriously though, you can buy me a drink.

BREAKING: Rivers of Light Debut Date Set for Disney’s Animal Kingdom; Dining Package Information

We have been wondering when Rivers of Light, the much delayed nighttime show for Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park, might be debuting since it was first delayed back in April of this year. Well, it seems today we have finally gotten our answer…

DisneyWorld.com today added information on Rivers of Light dining packages

DisneyWorld.com today added information on Rivers of Light dining packages

According to dining packages available for the show on DisneyWorld.com, Rivers of Light will officially debut on or around May 1st, 2017. The dining packages offering reserved viewing space for the show will begin to be offered on May 1st, so the show would have to debut by then. Dining packages will be available for booking 180 days in advance should all go according to plan this time.

For some reason, the Tiffins package is not actually listed along with Flame Tree Barbecue and Tusker House, but the official information confirms that 3 restaurants will be a part of the dining package.

REVIEW: Nomad Lounge at Animal Kingdom Undergoes Massive Menu Overhaul

4 months after opening, Nomad Lounge at Disney’s Animal Kingdom has shaken things up with a rather major menu change. For more information on this establishment, please check out our original review, but if you have already seen that, then let’s dive right on in to what’s new…

Nomad Lounge Small Plate Menu

Nomad Lounge Small Plate Menu

So what has changed? New to menu are the beef sliders and the fish tacos. The seasonal fish balls and the wagyu beef were removed from the menu altogether. Other than that, some item prices were changed: Pork Ribs are down $1, the chicken wings are also down $1, but the head cheese plate went up $5 for some reason. Portions did in fact grow in several dishes, which we will show you below. You can refer to the old menu in our original review, if need be.

African-Spiced Wagyu Beef Sliders ($14)

African-Spiced Wagyu Beef Sliders ($14)

African-Spiced Wagyu Beef Sliders ($14)

Completely new to the menu are the African-Spiced Wagyu Beef Sliders. While they are $14, they are quite good. Tender, well-cooked beef on a soft, flaky bun with a tomato sauce on top makes for a perfect combination. Still a relatively small dish, but one of my favorites.

Sustainable Fish Tacos ($8)

The fish tacos were kind of a letdown. I honestly think that the counter service fish tacos at Sunshine Seasons in Epcot are better. The fish tasted well prepared, but there was nothing added to the flavor by anything accompanying it. I would not order these again.

Vegetarian Summer Roll ($7)

Vegetarian Summer Roll ($7)

The Vegetarian Summer Roll was doubled in size with no price increase, but it also tasted and looked far different than it did the first time. The rolls, to me at least, had a strange “plasticy” flavor and texture. The accompanying dipping sauce is great, but these rolls aren’t what you’ll want to dip in them.

These wings still aren’t very good, but at least you get more than 3 now (and the price was decreased, which is nice). There’s still something off about these. I feel like I’m still expecting a lot of spice, but it just never happens.

Still my personal favorite small plate at Nomad Lounge, the portion size for the ribs adds 2 ribs, now making this something I will likely order overtime I come here. A sprits of lime makes these unforgettable, with the ribs themselves cooked until the meat practically falls off the bone. If you try one dish here, this is my recommendation.

OVERALL

Per my original review:

The food menu is really solid and may even improve as the days progress (our server was surprised to hear we did not like the wagyu beef). The drink menu might be second to none quite honestly. I can’t think of a specialty drink menu at Walt Disney World where I would have a more difficult time picking a beverage. There is a lot on this drink menu and a lot of it is absolutely phenomenal. Nomad Lounge will without a doubt will be a regular drink destination for us, and the bread service and ribs will likely be on the must-order short list overtime as we visit. The atmosphere alone is worth your money, never mind anything they will serve you. Kudos to all involved in the creation of Animal Kingdom’s latest masterpiece.

I still love Nomad Lounge, and nothing has changed my feelings on their stellar drink menu. These changes to the food menu are overall an improvement, adding some value for your dollar. I do still wish that the wings were better, and the vegetarian roll was definitely not as good as it was previously, but the addition of the sliders and the improved rib and chicken portions are a good start. The food menu here isn’t perfect, but I would still also recommend the bread service and the Taste of Tiffins dessert from here as well. After 15 or so visits now, the drink menu is still my favorite on property, and still very much the main reason to go to Nomad Lounge.

If you want a guaranteed amazing meal, there’s always Tiffins next door…

REVIEW: New Tiffins Lunch Makes The Best Table Service Restaurant Affordable

Disney has been quite vocal about the addition of the Taste of Tiffins lunch options at Tiffins at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park as of late. The new table service offering has had a really hard time drawing people in, based on both the location and the depressing outcome of the nighttime offerings this summer at the park. These lunch offerings and the addition of the restaurant and its Nomad Lounge to Table in Wonderland discounts are a desperate plea by Disney to persuade guests to eat at the only signature dining experience at Animal Kingdom. Personally, I love Tiffins, and it is typically the reason I even go to the park as of late, so I was pretty ecstatic to try the new lunch menu.

Two of us ordered this, so what you will see below are the 72-Hour Beef Shortrib, Chermoula-Rubbed Chicken, Crispy Yellow tail Snapper, and the Chilled Shrimp and Noodle Salad. These were crunchy, flavorful, and plentiful. A really good value for $5, this might be my favorite vegetable side item at the Walt Disney World Resort.

OVERALL

In review, Tiffins is everything this park needed in a table service restaurant. The addition of a signature restaurant to the existing line-up was much needed (although I’m hoping for a lower-end table service addition to the park in Pandora next year). I appreciate that the theme and menu were not regurgitated from Jiko, and also that we truly have the first restaurant ever designed for designers. Who would have ever thought we would get a restaurant about Imagineers designing a theme park?

The menu has some really top notch offerings you really can’t find anywhere else (a few could use some work of course) and the drink menu might be the best from top to bottom of any location on property. Same as Skipper Canteen, I’m proud of Disney for letting the chefs create a menu like this for theme park consumption, and I feel like Tiffins will succeed where Skipper Canteen couldn’t being located in the Magic Kingdom.

As far as pricing, it is a signature restaurant, so the prices are as you expect. That being said, I felt like the prices here were slightly more reasonable than Brown Derby (which I would most closely equate as the only signature in a park of limited options). Of course, I always feel like Brown Derby is worth the price, but I think Tiffins boasts a stronger menu…

That was my review of Tiffins dinner, and lunch is no different. The Taste of Tiffins is a phenomenal, and more affordable way to try many of the main dishes offered here. The addition of the Tables in Wonderland 20% discount is another nice addition, overall I feel that it makes Tiffins an even better option than it already was for those looking for good food at Animal Kingdom. The portions for a $28 signature restaurant offering are great, and there isn’t much on the menu that I don’t think that you will enjoy.

Animal Kingdom Getting a New Table Service Restaurant in 2016:– “Tiffins”

We’ve been watching construction of a new restaurant at Animal Kingdom (just behind Pizzafari on the way to Pandora: The World of AVATAR) for quite a while now, but we now finally know what it will be…

Tiffins Concept Art

Tiffins Concept Art

The restaurant will be called Tiffins and it “will celebrate the art of traveling, featuring a diverse menu drawing from places that inspired the creation of Disney’s Animal Kingdom”. Serving lunch and dinner, Tiffins will also include waterfront views from indoor and outdoor seating areas. “Tiffin” is an Indian English word for a midday meal or a type of container used to carry food while traveling.

Tifins will open to guests in 2016 at Disney’s animal Kingdom theme park.
