Room For One More Explained

Room For One More is an event celebrating the 40th anniversary of Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion. It will be held on September 30th at the Contemporary Resort. Tickets sold for $285 per person. The event will include a recreation of the Haunted Mansion cemetery inside the Contemporary Resort, a Mansion’s Feast with appearances by “restless spirits,” a Ghost Gallery that will feature first edition keepsakes up for a bid in a silent auction, meet-and-greets with world-renowned artists including Robert Olszewski, Jim Shore, and Greg McCullough among others, a panel with Walt Disney Imagineers and more. Registration has ended, but there is an impressive catalog of Vinylmation available at the event. We also do know that artist Noah will be on hand at the event. He has a few custom Vinylmation he produced for this event. Check out Noah’s and all the event Vinylmation below.

Update: 9/27/11 Artist Javier Soto has added a custom to the event. The bidding starts at $999. Take a look: (pictures from Disney)

Upate: 9/23/11 It was a long wait, but we finally have a peak at Miss Mindy’s 9/9 combo for this event:

Update: 9/18/11 Sketch art of Monty’s Grave Keeper was added below. We also added a picture of the back of the Ear Hat. Also, please check out this link for details about Noah’s participation in this event and other WDW events around the same time.

Update: 9/2/11 Here is a look at Noah’s 9″ for the event:

Update: 8/27/11 The Ear Hat that depicts the stretching room DOES stretch!!! Amazing:

BEFORE
AFTER

The portraits pull out of a sleeve to reveal the full length stretching portraits.

3″ Gargoyle

This figure is part of a 3″ Vinylmation, Ear Hat and Pin combo (see below). The set is designed by Monty Maldovan and Quynh Kimball.

Retail: $99.95
LE 500

The Gargoyle look great! But the arms are kind of awkward because we are missing the elbows. I wonder what the profile looks like. On the back is event logo.

Ear Hat

This Ear Hat comes with the above 3″ Vinylmation and the pin below. The design of the hat really captures the colors, wallpaper and furniture inside the Haunted Mansion.

Gravestone Pin

We finally get a peak at the pin that will be packaged with the above Ear Hat and Vinylmation. It depicts a gravestone with the gravekeeper’s dog. The stone reads “The Haunted Mansion 40th Anniversary.”

Ear Hat Box

All of the above will be packaged in this. If I get nothing else, I will take the box! The hat box shows the 3″ Vinylmation, Ear Hat and Pin against the backdrop of the stretching room. It also has a great looking Haunted Mansion logo on the lid.

This one of a kind just has a rough concept sketch released so far.

9″ Bride

This is part of a 2 piece 9″ Bride and Groom set. Like many Room For One More items, it glows with a black light.

This is part of a 2 piece 9″ Bride and Groom set. Wow, talk about a stand for your vinyls! This piece as a whole is something we have never seen before.
9″ Custom on Stand

Noah
Retail: $650
LE 13

13 makes good sense. If it’s Noah, you know it will be amazing. $650 is a bit pricier than his normal LEs.

3″ Custom
Noah
Retail: $150
LE 13
Noah’s second Room For One More exclusive piece.
9″ Caretaker & 3″ Dog

Monty Maldovan
Retail: $1000
LE 1

I’m a bit disapointed here. I really wanted to see this combo for mass retail… I called it on an earlier podcast. But seeing it here as an LE 1 makes me think we will not be seeing it mass produced with the Haunted Mansion series. As expensive as this combo is, the mixed media creation must look spectacular.

Chicago Windy City Release Report

New the DV reporting staff is Minnie Malice. She lives in Chicago and attended the Windy City 3″ Vinylmation release. Here is her experience.

Ever since I got into Vinylmation—which, admittedly, wasn’t all that long ago—I’ve been hoping and praying for a Chicago exclusive. In fact, not that far back my partner and I were talking, with a twinge of jealousy in our voice, about how it just wasn’t fair that the coasts—San Fran. and New York—got all the cool exclusives.

Well, when news broke that Oskar Mendez would be doing the “Windy City” Chicago exclusive, lets just say my excitement was hard to contain. I marked my Google calendar, and restlessly check off the days.

Earlier this week, though, I got some bad news: my partner wasn’t going to be able to make the release with me—something about their brother getting married, which, in my opinion, is not as cool or as fun as a Vinylmation release. So, to ensure that I didn’t have to go alone, I bribed The Cuteboy (a.k.a my best friend) with some coffee, and he agreed to join me in my epic, dorky adventure.

Saturday was a beautiful, crisp Chicago morning—a beautiful day to stand outside a Disney store. Despite waking up early, we were running a little behind because The Cuteboy just had to finish brewing his potion on Pottermore. Around 7:30 a.m., with coffee in hand, we caught a bus and headed downtown.

We got to the store a little bit before 8:00 a.m., and as you can see from the picture, at this point there was no line, and not many people waiting outside.

We stroled up and met two other collectors eagerly waiting for the doors to open, one whom I actualy was in correspondence with over on the Vinylmation Kingdom Forums. Instantly we began talking shop: old mold vs. new mold, the new Park Starz series, as well as the difficulties that come with being a collector who lives in the mid-west—a topic I hope to write more about in the future. We also talked about our collections, what figures we’re looking for, and what upcoming series we are excited/not excited about. I also had to explain Vinylmation to The Cuteboy, seeing as he wasn’t familiar with the phenomenon. His response was, “So, this is like if J.K. Rowling released Harry Potter figurines?”

While we were waiting outside, chatting, sipping coffee, and I chain-smoking, I snapped some pictures of the store. The sidewalk had a mosaic of my favorite female mouse, so, of course, I had to snap a picture:

I also took a picture of the Princess area of the store, jealous that I am no longer small enough to fit into one of the awesome Princess Halloween costumes the Cast Members were putting up, because, truth be told, I would look super cute in a pink Rapunzel dress.

At about quarter to 9:00, more people started showing up, each with the same question: “You here for vinylmation?” We all started talking, trying to fill time before the doors opened. One family came form a local suburb, and was shocked that I didn’t collect any of the Holiday figures—their family’s favorite series. Another couple came all the way from Wisconsin, but more impressive, they also just got back from The Florida Project—so of course everyone was bombarding them with questions: What figures did you get? What was the trading like? Did you get an Orange Bird? And then my question: “what did you think of—what I called— the “squished” Minnie?

As far as demographics go, most of the folks waiting were suburbanites from the surrounding area, and honestly, I think I was the only person in the line that was actually from the City!

With ten minutes till the store opened I snapped another picture in attempts to show the line that was brewing, or should I say not brewing.

As you can tell, even with as little as 5 minutes before the store opened, there still was only a few of us—I would say 15—waiting to get in. (FYI-The boy leaning against the pillar, in the black hoodie, looking at his phone—that’s The Cuteboy!!!).

At 9:00 sharp, a Cast Member came to the door and we were officially let into the store with a cheerful: “Welcome to Disney.” Luckily, I knew right where the vinyls were, so I left the Cuteboy and made a beeline for them. But I was met with a surprise! The tins weren’t by the Vinylmation display! The store had put them all by their Chicago-base merchandise, a smart marketing plan—one that plays off of the number of tourist they get in the store.

I was unable to get a picture of the display before the feeding frenzy, because I was a little too busy trying to make sure I had enough in my hands to fill my quota of requested figures, but the shelf had about 50 to 60 tins, neatly stacked above the Chicago Mickey stuffed-animals, but in 1.3 seconds the shelves were stripped and looked like this:

I think a lot of us there had a moment of panic when the shelf was stripped that quickly, and as a result tensions were high. It should be noted that there WAS NOT a limit on the number of tins you could buy, and I saw at least a few people with close to 20 in their hands. Sadly to say, because of this there was a little pushing and grabbing, which is disappointing to see at something like this—come on folks! We’re all in this together, right? Oh well, I guess not everyone can just enjoy themselves. In fact, one “gentle” man actually yelled at a Cast Member, which just makes me think that he doesn’t have a Jiminy Cricket on his shoulder.

With my tins in hand—well, actually in the Cuteboy’s hands—I looked around and took a picture of the store’s regular Vinylmation display.

NO, your eyes are not deceiving you—that is only ONE wall of Vinylmations with only one tray each of Lion King, Robots, Muppets #2, and Cutesters and a few random 9 inches. Oh the perks of being a Mid-western Vinylmation Collector.

At this time, I heard a commotion behind me. A Cast Member had pulled out the big guns. With the regular display stripped of all the tins, from the back they brought out a big, clear Rubbermaid container filled to the brim.

As you can see, some folks were grabbing arm fulls out of the tub!

The Cuteboy and I moved quickly through the checkout line, and afterwards I was fortunate enough to talk to one of the Cast Members about their expectation for this particular release. Seeing as this was the first time Chicago ever had a release for Vinylmation—with the exclusion of the Lion King and Robots and other in-store exclusives—I was curious if this was about what they were expecting in terms of turnout. She told me that they did have a few calls through out the month about the release, but not enough to warrant a wristband or a ticket system. Moreover, because of the Open Edition of the figure, they didn’t even feel the needed to put a limit on the number of figures people could buy. And as you can see, they had plenty of figures to go around, and were not sold out by any means. I think the most interesting thing that the Cast Member said was, they expect to see more releases like this in the future. Does that mean we should be seeing a second Chicago Exclusive in the future? Well, she said that she “didn’t know anything,” but I swear I saw a little twinkle in her eyes as she said it.

When all was said and done, The Cuteboy and I were at the store for about an hour and 30 minutes—about an hour and 20 minutes waiting outside the store, and 10 minutes grabbing tins, taking pictures, and checking out.

Maybe its because Chicago doesn’t have a high number of Vinylmation collectors, maybe its because of the Open Edition, or maybe its because there wasn’t an artist signing, but the reality of this release is—it was quick with relatively no line, and definitely more than enough tins to go around. In fact, when we finally left the store that Rubbermaid tub was still about half full.

By 10:25 the Cuteboy and I were back on the bus heading home, along with a new friend who got her own seat on the bus; but of course, we had stopped off for some breakfast and a diner photoshoot to cap off the morning.

All in all, a great morning and a great experience for my first official Vinylmation release.

ZoMG: Darkwing Release at DLR

Wow. As far as Vinylmation release mornings go I would have to say, in my years of Vinylmation experience this was insane!!

I went to this release morning, or night I should say, around 11:30pm. My boyfriend said I should get there early just because this release seemed so popular! I agreed and we made it down to the downtown Disney parking lot. To my surprise at 11:45 the night BEFORE the release (well 15 minutes before haha) there were 6 cars already parked in line to get inside!!

Wow! I couldn’t believe it! Thank goodness we ended up getting there when we did! Slowly people starting pulling up behind us in line and forming different rows. The lines went as far back down the street past the Disneyland hotel!

Because so many people showed up for this release around 4:00am security guards starting letting us know that they were going to let us in the parking lot early. So basically time to turn on your engines!!! Everyone had a quick panic including myself!

They raised bars and all the cars starting speeding through the parking lot to get a good spot!! Thank goodness my boyfriend has long legs he was able to run and get a spot in line!! I swear by the time they let our cars in to park, I think Darkwing had already reached at least 200 people in line!!

After this they organized our line into groups to make the walking over to D-Street process a bit easier! We sat there for awhile… some trading, some sleeping, some reading and chatting! We had a great time in line. It was a bit chilly so thank goodness I had some nice friends to share blankets with us! I even saw some familiar faces of cast members who work at D-Street! So exciting to see them getting into it too!!

Finally, around 7am, wristbands were distributed. And before we knew it, at 7:50 (yes 10 minutes early shh!) we were let inside to buy our Vinylmation and then head home to get some sleep!!

Today was a very eventful day! Now I am on my way to the Vinylmation trading night!! See you guys there!!

Darkwing Release at WDW and DLR

The Disney Afternoon Vinylmation releases have been very eventful. From lines being moved, to online order screw ups to near altercations… it is clear that a generation of Disney collectors love their childhood cartoons. Today, Darkwing Duck released at WDW and DLR.

We arrived at D-Street Orlando 4am and where about 10th in line. People were lined up in the new designated spot which is next to the handicapped spaces in the parking lot in front of AMC theater. The line extends down the curb of the parking lot. This was the best release line to date. By now, everyone has gotten to know each other. I believe, even more so than the collectibles themselves, Vinylmation has become a community of friends. We all have a great time and enjoy seeing each other at every release date and trading event. I for one have made some great friends along the way. This morning, we were even prepared with games! We played some fantastic games of Farkle and Phase 10 that made the 7 hour line fly by. At 8am, Disney escorted the orderly line to the front of D-Street. At the 10:30 open, they let us in in small groups.

Meanwhile, over at Disneyland’s D-Street…

AutoStitch sent us this panoramic picture of a pre-sunrise line at DLR. It’s always a bit more frantic over on the west coast. Read Zoe’s Disneyland Darkwing Release report here. Crazy times over there! and Zoe will be coming along with a Disneyland Darkwing release report soon. In the meantime, here is a look at today’s coveted Vinylmation.

This LE 1000 Chris Chapman designed set looks amazing. Chris captured DW’s look and stuck it on a vinyl.

The hat was expertly designed and looks great on Darkwing. It of course is removable and can be used in Combo Contest #3… don’t worry, it’s coming soon.

Along side Darkwing is Gosalyn Mallard with her pigtails and #1 tee shirt.

A few fun things inside D-Street Orlando:

The 3″ Winnie the Pooh sold out at the Florida Project, but some Mickey and Dumbo 9/3 combos were left over. They retail for $74.95.

Some 9″ Florida Project Empress Lilly figures were there as well. They have a $49.95 price tag. The Pin Traders Kiosk on the other side of Downtown also had a few Florida Project pin sets left over. Including some of those absolute drop dead amazing MK land themed box sets.

An Ear Hat sale has also been ongoing the past couple weeks at D-Street. 25% off while supplies last! Milk, Donuts, Color Bars, Paint Splatter and Creatures are all available.

VER: The Florida Project Trading Room Wrap

By RMThompson

I know, so much as been written about the Florida Project already, what else could we cover? Well, as much as Fl Project was a showcase for new things coming in the Vinylmation world, it was even MORE SO, a place to trade for things already released. While other DV Reporters spent their day…reporting, I spent mine trading, and now I am here to give my review of the trading room, and what was going hot, and what’s not.

First, it was nice to see so many traders, ESPECIALLY after the doors opened for the Public Day. Previous to that mark, a LOT of traders spent their time in various Trading Lines going after the elusive Orange Bird Chaser, or other rarities that were found in the trading games. Once they were all gone, they, along with all those who just came to public day, FILLED the trading room floor.

However, I will say I still expected more traders. While the number of registered guests was near 700 for the event, those that set-up and traded was closer to 30 or 40 traders. That’s an exceedingly low number, especially when compared to pin trading events. Yet, those trading had LOTS to trade, it seemed to be nearly double the amount of figures for trade than the typical every-other-month trading events.

Certain figures were seen a lot, and were losing value as the day went on, including the WDW and 71 Cast Chasers, Clear Pink Elephants and the growingly more common (yet still totally awesome) Urban 5 3D Chaser. These figures had certainly slipped some since the previous trading event where they were hotter traders.

Also slipping were some older figures. Park and Urban 1s that aren’t highly sought after (SMRT-1, Graffiti, Fireworks, Glow for example) are becoming more and more available. I can only assume that as newer sets become available, people are more and more willing to trade their older figures to get the stuff they really want. They need more room on their shelf to hold the new stuff, and quite frankly despite the value of the figures, a lot of the new figures just plain look BETTER than their older counterparts. Yet, this doesn’t apply to the figures from these series that people REALLY love. Balloon chaser made a brief appearance by one highly-selective trader, but there were also precious few Figment, Oopsy, Teacups and Gold Chaser figures to go around, making them very tough to trade for.

More recent figures that are seeing a spike in value are hard-to-find figures based on characters a lot of people love. Dripping Mickey chaser and Pongo are now in the well-over-$150-range, while other “easier” figures like Stitch, Supermouse, and a lot of Park 4 are steadily rising above the $50 dollar range.

As for figures released at the event, they were surprisingly not being swapped, with the exception of the Orange Bird Chaser, which is not only the BEST figure ever created on the New Mold (seriously), but was trading upwards of $60 to $80 dollars by the end of the day… once all were given out.

On the 9 inch front, things were slower than I expected. I saw almost NO older 9” Vinylmation. A Mummy was there but not traded, and I got my hands on an Urban 2 Angry Mickey Tiki (underrated figure in my opinion), but there was little else from the older era of Vinylmation to represent the bigger figures. The ones that were there were almost exclusively Location-Based figures; TONS of New York figures to be found, and none of them worth anything save the original “brick head figure.” The remainders were a blend of newer figures with a variety of values. Maleficent and other Villain 9” were surprisingly low in value, while Rafiki and Up were steadily being traded at over $100 dollars in value.

Everyone had the Disney Afternoon series. While Bonkers and Dougs were just taking up trade space, I saw many Ducktales, Talespins and Rescue Rangers being traded, with the Rescue Rangers being the hardest to trade for and the highest in value. The other two packs to be had included the lower-end Cars and Halloween, and the higher end Disney Cruise Line Stuff. Location based tins and 3” were easy enough to gobble up, but perhaps the rarest was the San Fran 3” Bridge.

Interestingly enough, certain Park/Urban series are seeing a WIDE variety in value from figure to figure. To better reflect that, here is a list of each of the main series and their highest and lowest traders based on what I saw this weekend, excluding the chasers (which in almost all cases are the hottest traders in each series)

Park 1:
HOT: Figment/Creepy Wallpaper.
NOT: Fireworks/SMRT-1

Park 2:
HOT: Mike Mouse/Little Green Men
NOT: Monkey/Aquaramouse

Park 3:
HOT: Blue Monorail
NOT: Almost everything else

Park 4:
HOT: Combo Topper (Plane Crazy)/Epcot 84
NOT: Tower of Terror/POTC Dog

Park 5:
HOT: Stitch/Yeti
NOT: Buzz Lightyear Vehicle/COP John

Park 6:
HOT: Orange Monorail
NOT: Troll/Primeval Whirl

Urban 1:
HOT: Oopsy/El Super Raton
NOT: Checkered/Graffiti

Urban 2:
HOT: Cosmos/Chinese Writing/Chocolate Mickey Bar
NOT: Gear Bear/Girly

Urban 3:
HOT: Cheeseburger/Green Dragon
NOT: EVERYTHING ELSE

Urban 4:
HOT: Supermouse/Robot/Heartbroken
NOT: Everything else but Strawberry Fields

Urban 5:
HOT: Nothing
NOT: Everything

Urban 6:
HOT: Blue Thumb Variant
NOT: Baby Crying/Sideways Mickey

All in all the day was a success, and I saw LOTS of trading going on, which is a great thing. I hope that Disney will realize that Vinylmation is a BIG success and give us more than a handful of exclusive event figures next time, compared to the DOZENS of pins that were available the day before… but that’s a story for another article.

Shoot Pool for Less

Last week, Disney dropped the price of its Billiards set from $255.95 to $178.99. (thanks to Brandon for the email) Does this entice you to bite? These have been sitting on shelves around WDW since before I started collecting these little 3″ Mickeys. The set is also available online.

Vinylmation Speculation: More Park Starz Leaked?

Update: 9/14/11 9:58pm The answer seems to be no. Sorry for the false alarm. Disney Artist John Henselmeier (@johnhensel) just sent us this tweet: @VinylmationNews those are from a PVC park characters set that were sold in the parks a couple years ago.

None the less, it was fun to speculate on some Park Starz!

Through an email, one of our readers John brought a couple interesting videos to our attention. They were made by D23’s Disney Geek back in May, and may point to more figures in the Park Starz series. We tried to find the best screen shots and should have some improved images soon. We want to stress, these may or may not be Park Starz, but take a look for yourselves.

The giveaway is Big Al, who we know for sure is in the set. I can also see a Brier Rabbit from Splash Mountain under Big Al. In our interview with Thomas Scott and Casey Jones, I specifically asked about a Splash Mountain Vinylmation and they said one was on the way. The purple character looks like Figment, but not the bowling pin shaped Figment we know is in the set. Also, the big white (Yeti?) looking figure doesn’t look like the Yeti we have seen. Are these early prototypes?

In this second screen shot we see Yeti’s? arm, maybe a Mexican Small World figure, Big Al and a few others. Can you identify them? Once looks Mr. Toadish to me. The tall one to the right of all looks a little like the Graveyard Keeper from Mansion but not quite. Let us know what you think and what you see.
