Rumored New Disney World Attractions That Could Be Announced Soon – Tom’s Top 7

Welcome to another edition of Tom’s Top 7,  a continuing countdown of my favorite (and occasionally, least favorite) things at the Disney Parks around the globe. Why seven? STOP ASKING!

Rumored New Attractions That May Be Announced Soon for Walt Disney World

Rumored New Attractions That May Be Announced Soon for Walt Disney World

Anyway, the first two times we counted down, we visited the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival. I decided this week it might be time to stop talking about food and get to the real bread and butter of Walt Disney World – attractions. We live in a time of great uncertainty about the future of Walt Disney World. We are 5 short years away from the golden anniversary of the Vacation Kingdom of the World and Disney is already teasing us that they have some major announcements to make before then (as alluded to during the 45th anniversary ceremony at the Magic Kingdom earlier this month. See for yourself:

There is plenty on the table that hasn’t been announced yet, but here are my Top 7 rumored additions to Walt Disney World that we could be hearing about soon.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy at Epcot

The Guardians of then Galaxy could be exploding through the rubble of Epcot's Universe of Energy...

The Guardians of then Galaxy could be exploding through the rubble of Epcot’s Universe of Energy…

I think you’ve probably heard enough about this one at this point, but if all goes according to plan, it seems that a Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster will replace the Universe of Energy in Future World. I’m not going to waste much time on this one as I feel enough has already been said. You are going to notice a recurring theme and this list and that is that everything is tied to an intellectual property of the Disney Company. SURPRISE!

2. Wreck-It Ralph Racing Ride

Will Tomorrowland host a Sugar Rush racing ride straight out of Wreck-It Ralph?

Will Tomorrowland host a Sugar Rush racing ride straight out of Wreck-It Ralph?

Another one that seems almost definite at this point with Stitch’s Great Escape now operating seasonally, guests may be designing their own Sugar Rush race car and competing against each other in the first VR attraction in the parks since the Aladdin magic carpet ride experience jumped from Innoventions at Epcot to DisneyQuest in the 1990’s. Virtual reality has come a long way since then and is now becoming a theme park stable on rollercoasters, but has not been applied in an attraction quite like this yet.

3. Ratatouille in France at Epcot

Is "the little chef" coming to Epcot?

Is “the little chef” coming to Epcot?

Since the Ratatouille ride opened at Walt Disney Studios Paris, guests have speculated that it could make its way to the France pavilion at Epcot. The latest rumblings say it will not, but that doesn’t mean something else themed to Ratatouille couldn’t replace Impressions De France, right? 😉

4. Star Tours Scene for Rogue One – A Star Wars Story

The Death Star under construction appears in Star Tours, so it would be a perfect fir for a Rogue One addition

The Death Star under construction appears in Star Tours, so it would be a perfect fir for a Rogue One addition

This seemed like a forgone conclusion, but the rumblings on Rogue One being added to Star Tours have gone silent as of late. Walt Disney World running a holiday fireworks show rather than including Rogue One in Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular seems a bit odd, so maybe we won’t be seeing much Rogue One stuff in Florida. While Disneyland has replaced their Kylo Ren meet and greet with Darth Vader, we have still not announced any plans to even make that change.

5. TRON Lightcycle Power Run

TRON Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland

TRON Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland

One of Shanghai Disneyland’s top attractions, TRON Lightcycle Power Run still seems likely to land in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom or in Future World at Epcot. Who doesn’t want this one to happen? It may not fit perfectly in Epcot, but it’s a pretty nifty concept that should interest most guests.

6. The New Magic Kingdom Fireworks Show

The Magic Kingdom is due for a new fireworks extravaganza

The Magic Kingdom is due for a new fireworks extravaganza

“Tale as old as time.” Wishes has been the main fireworks show at the Magic Kingdom since October 2003. In 13 years, fireworks shows and nighttime spectaculars have come a long way. Despite constant updates of the projection mapping system for Celebrate the Magic, we still haven’t seen much evidence that a new nighttime show for the park is currently in production. Fun fact: The Magic Kingdom is the only classic style Castle park that still doesn’t have a projection-heavy new age fireworks display. We can only hope that 2017 is the year Disney World finally pulls the plug on Wishes for something modern and grandiose.

7. (Yeah, Seven) Inside Out at Epcot

Since Inside Out was released in theaters, guests have been Armchair Imagineering ideas for the human emotions in Epcot, feeling they are a perfect fit as the park once boasted a pavilion about human health and even a show about the inside of a young boy’s mind in Cranium Command.

But where would such an attraction go? Well, we originally though it might inhabit the old Wonders of Life pavilion, but current rumors say otherwise. Some believe that Figment will lose his Epcot attraction so that the Inside Out gang could take over the Imagination pavilion. It’s not too far fetched considering there is an Imagination in everyone’s mind… oh, and Figment makes a cameo in Riley’s imagination the film…

Can you spot Figment in Inside Out?

Can you spot Figment in Inside Out?

Improbable, Yes. Impossible, No. – The Timekeeper

Everything you see above may never come to fruition, much like anything not yet formally announced by the Walt Disney Company, but at this point, these are 7 additions or changes that are highly likely for Walt Disney World in the not-so-distant future.

What do you think? Which of these new attractions would you be excited for? Which ones would make you sad? Let me know in the comments below.

PHOTO REPORT: Magic Kingdom 9/26/16 (45th Anniversary, Stitch Closing, Tomorrowland Rocks, ETC.)

Our latest photo report takes us to the Magic Kingdom to see the latest goings on. The 45th anniversary is looming, with several attractions in the park being refurbished, or in some cases preparing to close for a while. Oh, and there’s refillable popcorn still…

The Magic Kingdom 45th Anniversary Merchandise

img_4318

On Thursday, stores around the Magic Kingdom began carrying 45th Anniversary merchandise ahead of the October 1st celebration coming up this weekend. We have a full guide available to the dozens of new items in a separate post, but there is also a video walkthrough of the entire line available:

Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse Refurbishment Extended

img_4429

Since it is probably the most extensive refurbishment in the history of the attraction, the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse will not be open for its 45th birthday on October 1st. The new date Disney is telling cast members is simply “late October”.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Refurbishment

The refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at the Magic Kingdom rolls on, set to reopen November 19th, 2016.

Who Wants Popcorn?

img_4454

A new Halloween popcorn bucket on sale around the resort.

img_4455

The refillable popcorn bucket promotion was indefinitely extended, buckets are now good for $1.50 refills for length of stay. This means that as long as you have a bucket and they continue this promotion, you can get a $1.50 refill of popcorn.

This and That

img_4462

After many months out of stock, the Magic Kingdom ornament is finally back!

img_4464

The repainting of the castle and installation of the holiday lights continues.

img_4465

Some tarps are still up at the Haunted Mansion.

img_4470

I’m happy to report that “it’s a small world” was doing much better this week, with many effects fixed, including the South American sun which has been broken for almost a year.

Color Return to Storybook Circus

img_4475

The Florida sun fades things fast, so it was sad to see the banners in Storybook Circus fading away so quickly. Disney has started to replace the banners again, making the area look fresh and vibrant.

img_4476

This larger banner hasn’t been replaced yet.

img_4477

img_4484

There are still many left to go…

img_4486

Chip and Dale have moved to a new home in Storybook Circus during the day. The space is already set up for meet and greets for the Halloween Party.

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus Cases

img_4487

D-Tech on Demand at the Tomorrowland Light and Power Co. has rolled out cases for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

img_4488

img_4489

There was also one new design we spotted on our most recent visit.

Stitch’s Great Escape is going seasonal

img_4495

Announced last week, Stitch’s Great Escape is going seasonal, rumored to be replaced by a Wreck-It Ralph ride once it finally closes in 2017.

img_4497

There was absolutely no one waiting for the show when we went in.

img_4498

The place is kind of falling apart, a staple of seasonal attractions at the end of their lifespan. I recall Horizons at Epcot being mostly broken in my later experiences riding it after it had gone seasonal.

img_4499

img_4500

A few people did show up before showtime.

img_4501

img_4504

img_4507

While I am happy to see Stitch on its way out, I am sad to see the remnants of Alien Encounter do the same.

Tomorrowland Rocks

img_4512

The rock painting at the entrance of Tomorrowland continues. The small rocks on the shoreline have been painted a normal grey rock color.

img_4513

img_4514

img_4515

img_4516

img_4517

The island in front of Tomorrowland has been turned to dirt. It should be interesting to see what they do here.

BREAKING: Stitch’s Great Escape To Operate Seasonally, Permanent Closure Imminent

Starting October 2nd, 2016, Stitch’s Great Escape at the Magic Kingdom will change to a seasonally operating attraction.

Stitch's Great Escape will operate seasonally at the Magic Kingdom starting 10/2/16

Stitch’s Great Escape will operate seasonally at the Magic Kingdom starting 10/2/16

The show will return for the busy 2016 holiday season for two periods, November 19th-26th, 2016 and December 17th, 2016 through January 2nd, 2017.

Walt Disney World has not offered a seasonally operating attraction in many years, not since the mid-2000’s when they would only open the Wonders of Life pavilion at Epcot during the busy holiday season. Of course, the Wonders of Life was retired shortly thereafter. Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress is the only attraction that was ever offered only seasonally to return to normal operation at Walt Disney World.

Stitch’s Great Escape is rumored to close permanently in the not-too-distant future to be replaced with a Wreck-It Ralph attraction. This seasonal closure could be used to start work on a new attraction inside the building.

Disney Releases ‘Sugar Rush’ Game on New Leap Motion Platform

SugarRush4Disney Interactive has launched the game Sugar Rush, which is based on the movie Wreck-It Ralph, on the new Leap Motion platform.

Leap Motion is a new technology which allows users to interact with their computer in a real and natural way without a mouse or keyboard.

The way Leap Motion works is with the use of a small 3” controller that connects to your computer (Mac/Windows) using USB. Once connected, you wave your hands around the area above the controller and it will be detected on your computer allowing you to do practically anything. The controller senses how you move your hands the way you naturally move them. So you can just point, wave, reach, and grab. Leap Motion will recognize all these gestures instantly without having to learn any new gestures.

Cool, huh? Well, Disney thought so and released their very first game for the platform based on the movie Wreck-It Ralph. Sugar Rush allows players to create your own “sugar-filled” candy kart and race through 4 challenging speedways. Similar to Mario Kart, you’ll have “objects” that can be used against your challengers like sweet seekers, cherry bombs, and sticky slicks.

Leap Motion is available for purchase now for just $79.99 and Sugar Rush is available through the Airspace Store for just $1.99.
