Disney Fans Insider Previews “Star Tours: The Adventures Continue”

The Disney Fans Insider takes a good, long look behind-the-scenes of “Star Tours: The Adventures Continue”:

Star Wars™ fans will reel in intergalactic ecstasy when the newly renovated Star Tours – The Adventures Continue attraction storms Disney’s Hollywood Studios May 20 and Disneyland Resort June 3. Lovers of Jedi and Sith lords are in for a double dose of droid-tastic adventure as the first grand opening is scheduled during the first of this year’s four consecutive Star Wars Weekends at Walt Disney World Resort. Dust off your lightsabers kids … it’s time for take-off!
Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald, who worked on the original Star Tours back in the mid ’80s, talks about re-imagining the new show. “We actually began planning the redesign over 10 years ago … a year before Episode I was complete. Fans were eager to see some changes, but after learning that Episodes II and III were in the works, we decided the update would have to wait. In order to create the ultimate Star Warsattraction for our Parks, George [Lucas] needed to finish his saga so we could include the best of all the films.”

Waiting may have been difficult, but transforming six full-length movies into a four-and-a-half-minute, fully-immersive ride presented other challenges for Tom’s team. “Because of time-period differences (the new attraction is a prequel to the original), we had to reverse-engineer our story, as well as the look of the Starspeeders.” The chronologically correct Starspeeder 1000 (formerly 3000) now features upgraded interior dashboards and onboard monitors so everything looks, sounds, and feels better than ever – even the color scheme was updated.

Technology played a crucial part in all the renovations, but Tom points out some of the most significant advances, starting with the branching storyline. “For the very first time, we utilized technology that selects one of 54 different story combinations so each ride’s really a surprise. Guests never know where they’ll go. We created this approach to keep it fresh for our enormous fan base. It’s a huge change from the original show.”

Two other key differences – the 3D factor and increased range of the motion simulator – were also technology driven, as Tom explains. “We wanted to add 3D for years, but had to wait for projection equipment that was robust enough to make it look state-of-the-art. Advanced visual effects make the world totally dimensional and so much more realistic than before. It’s absolutely breathtaking.” Imagineers worked closely with Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic team, who produced all the video footage for the main show as well as most of the pre-show.

Enhanced motion programming makes for a more unique experience as Guests are whisked off to a variety of new locations, including Tatooine, Hoth, Naboo, Coruscant, the mysterious Wookiee planet Kashyyyk and even a Death Star under construction. “It’ll feel very different from the first show, which only featured space flight. We’ve added a desert pod race, underwater travel, sliding on ice, and careening through forests while smashing into trees. Some adventures will be planet-based, some space, but each ride will feel distinct because Guests won’t know which story combination they’re getting.”

Many more characters have been incorporated into the new show, with appearances by fan favorites like Darth Vader, Admiral Ackbar, Princess Leia, Boba Fett, Chewbacca, R2-D2, Yoda, C-3PO and Jar Jar Binks. “Darth Vader’s voiceover was recorded by the original actor. It was also great working with Anthony Daniels and Frank Oz, who reprised their roles as C-3PO and Yoda respectively.”

Tom goes on to tell us how one of the brand-new characters – a spokesbot seen in the pre-show commercials and safety video – was named. “Aly San San came about because we couldn’t think of anything and knew George [Lucas] was amazing with names. When we told him actress Allison Janney was doing the voiceover work, he instantly said, ‘Aly San San.'”

In fact, collaborating with the creator of pop culture’s greatest phenomenon presented numerous benefits. “I spent more time with George than we were able to on the original show, which was absolutely wonderful for me. Meeting with him every few weeks to review the sequences, help us tune up the show, and learn from his experience was priceless. It was like taking a master class from George Lucas.”

Musical history was made when the Imagineers worked with Academy Award®-winning composer John Williams, who wrote the original Star Wars film scores. “John and his music editor found passages from the scores to use in our show. The cabin music is taken from the original recordings!” Composer Michael Giacchino lent his Academy Award-winning talent to create additional arrangements of various Star Wars themes for the commercials and pre-show videos.

With so much to see and hear, Disney and Star Wars fans alike will be thrilled to discover all the little homages hidden throughout the show. Tom says, “We packed as much of the films as we could into the new show. It’s really a salute to the best of Star Wars, so whether you’re a fan of the original or the newer trilogy, there’s something for everyone.”

Mark your calendars and check out Star Tours – The Adventures Continue when it opens May 20 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Theme Park and Disneyland Resort on June 3!

The Florida Project: What is RSP?

For those of you who came over to Vinylmation from Pins, you probably already know what Disney’s RSP or Random Selection Process is. If you are familiar with it, please feel free to share your comments below. For those not familiar with the process, what follows is a brief explanation of it.

The reason we are bringing this up today, is it appears this process may apply to Vinylmation, as well as Pins, at the Florida Project Trading Event in September. All the pins have been assigned RSP numbers in the Trade Show catalog.

Note the RSP number at the top middle
RSP numbers also appear next to the Vinylmation in that catalog.

We do not know for sure, but this leads us to believe they may be using RSP for Vinylmation as well. What is RSP? Here is a selection from Disney’s Pin Trading FAQ page:

In an effort to provide an equitable distribution of the limited edition event merchandise, we have asked our Information Technology Department to assist us by supervising a Random Selection Process (RSP). The RSP eliminates the need for guests to arrive early and stand in line to purchase items that are limited in nature. The RSP is a computer-generated process matching a list of Guest names and their desired merchandise selections and rankings. All Guest names, their merchandise selections and rankings are entered into the system. When all information has been input, the system will randomly assign merchandise items to each Guest for purchase, based on the edition size, ranking and the ranking of all other attendees. For example, if an item has an edition size of 20 and 100 Guests show an interest to purchase this, the computer will randomly select 20 Guests who will be offered the opportunity to purchase the item.

So you must enter a drawing for the chance to purchase Pins. Guests attending the Florida Project and who signed up for the Pin Trading days, today received an email with a link to the RSP form to fill out for the Pins they wish to purchase. This is my first Pin event. I’m drawn in by the great retro Disney merchandise. I like the idea of a no pressure situation… I don’t have to rush down to EPCOT and be at the front of the line and wonder if the Pins I want will be there. Plus this allows for merchandise to still be available for people who can’t make it the first day. It is a bit odd being told by a computer what I can and can’t purchase. If you registered for the Vinylmation day of the Florida Project, keep an eye out for an email about RSP and we will let you know if we get confirmation one way or the other.

What do you think of RSP? Have you had a good or bad experience with it in the past?

First Look at Nearly Completed Pieces of “Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid”

The video from this post on the Disney Parks Blog gives a great look at some of the figures and scenes from the Disney California Adventure version of “Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid” which will be a part of new Fantasyland in 2012:

I know “The Little Mermaid” fans have been eagerly awaiting the opening of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure at Disney California Adventure park. I’ve been waiting since I first saw the movie back in 1989! There are three other people who’ve also been hoping that someday a Little Mermaid attraction would open at Disney Parks: legendary Disney animators Glen Keane, Mark Henn and Andreas Deja. These three talented men are some of the creative minds behind all those lovable characters in the movie.

Recently, Walt Disney Imagineers Larry Nikolai and Chris Crump gave the animators a tour of the new attraction. I was lucky enough to also be on this tour, along with a crew from D23 magazine. You can read their extensive article in this month’s issue and here.

In this video you get to see a rare Disney moment: animators seeing their work come to life in a Disney Parks attraction. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. And remember, The Little Mermaid~Ariel’s Undersea Adventure opens at Disney California Adventure park on June 3.

Vinylmation Speculation: Cutesters Like You and Robots

We are still hearing lots of chatter about Cutesters Like You and Robots… two rumored upcoming Disney Store Exclusive Vinylmation sets. The latest word is a May 23rd release date for Cutesters Like You. This set is to be geared toward girls and features girls doing “sporty” and “outdoorsy” things.

Could this be a clue to the Robot Series?

Robots is rumored to be a set with “classic” robot designs with a quickly approaching release date. The buzz is that Cast Members working at Disney Stores have seen the flyers for these releases.

Times Square Disney Store
Also of note for Disney Stores is the arrival of Vinylmation Trading. We have heard that select stores have already received their trading boxes from Disney and may begin trading with guests as early as May 16th.

ZoMG: Vinylmation Trading Night – Paradise Pier Hotel

Friday, May 6th was Trading Night at the Paradise Pier Hotel. Vinylmation and Pin collectors gathered to trade and share their collections.

This was the second trading event of the year and it was a huge success! There were at least 10 or 12 tables dedication to just Vinylmation! This was exciting because last time there were maybe only 5 or 6 tables of Vinylmation. Maybe one day we can have a Vinylmation Trading event all to ourselves!

The event took place between 7:00 – 10:00, people were coming in and out of the Paradise Pier Ballroom like crazy! People gathered for many different reasons, just to trade, looking for a few certain Vinylmation, and some just gathered to show off their collections.
It’s neat to see the different types of collectors that love Vinylmation all in one place together! You make friends, talk and have a great time. I had so much fun this past week at the Trading Event and was able to make a few great trades and get some Vinylmation that I was very excited about! Also, a lot of people recognized me from the Destination Vinylmation Blog, which was very flattering and exciting. So thank you to everyone that came by to say hi and trade!!
I hope that Disney puts together more trading nights for us to all meet up and trade our Vinylmation and maybe even show us some previews like they usually do with the Pin Preview Boards!

Everyone really made an effort to come out this time for the event! A couple of fun things that were going on at the Trading Event this time around were a trading box! I wish I had gotten a picture of this to show you guys but a nice couple that I met made their own trading box with drawers that you could walk up to and trade your own just like Disney trading boxes!

Also, another collector created a Vinylmation farm! This farm was created out of a few 9″ including Tree of Life, a custom beehive, and Goofy’s Barn Stormer! This set up was very impressive!! Their Barn set up included many Holiday 2 Corn, a couple Urban 6 Sunny Days, a Holiday 2 Ground Hog, 2 Good Luck/Bad Luck Lady Bugs, Pumpkins from Holiday 2, Mickey’s Garden from Have a Laugh, Bumble Bees from Cutesters 1, Killer Bees from Urban 6, one Green Thumb from Urban 6, a custom cow, Strawberries from Urban 4, Bullseye and Ham from Toy Story, as well as the 3″ sheep from the Toy Story Lil Bo Peep set. It turned out great and everyone loved it and was taking photos of it! Hopefully, next Trading Night there will be more set ups like this one!!
In conclusion, I believe this Trading Night was a huge success and I am looking forward to the next one! Hope to see you guys there!

“Cars 2” Merchandise Speeding to Walt Disney World

From Merchandise Communications Manager Steven Miller on the Disney Parks Blog:

'Cars 2' Youth Shirts for Disney Parks

The Disney•Pixar film “Cars” has a special meaning to me; it was the first movie my son saw in a theater. Despite the fact he was quite young at the time, he enjoyed it (though the part with Frank was a little scary…for me). I’m looking forward to seeing “Cars 2” with my son on June 24 (two words – Finn McMissile!). Yet I won’t have to wait that long to experience “Cars,” especially with the Downtown Disney Car Masters Weekend coming up on May 13-15. The weekend event sounds awesome (I used to attend car shows with my father while growing up in Columbus, Ohio). To celebrate this special Pixar-filled weekend, we made arrangements to release select “Cars 2” merchandise ahead of the national street date. I have a special look at several new items coming that weekend.

There will be three new youth shirts with original artwork created for Disney Parks. I love the bold, colorful graphics on the shirts! It looks like I’ve found what my son will be wearing next.

'Cars 2' Pins for Disney Parks

We will also release new pins including “two-on-a-card” pins featuring Finn (my favorite) with Holley Shiftwell and Professor Z with Acer. A mystery pin set is scheduled for release that weekend, too. Each set will contain two randomly selected pins from the 10-pin collection. I selected my favorite five pins for the image above.

There are some items that I am unfortunately unable to show yet – the new die-cast toy cars. Cody Hampton, Associate Developer for Toys and Games, shared some details of these new items.

“The new die-cast toys were created by Mattel and expand upon the ‘Cars’ universe with new characters,” explained Cody. “There will be 16 individual cars for the initial release. Each car will retail for $6.95. We are also introducing six different two-car sets and each contains an ‘exclusive vehicle’ found only in the set.”

Mater and Lightning McQueen from 'Cars in the Parks' Line

While I can’t show the newest die-cast cars, I can show Mater and Lightning McQueen from the new “Cars in the Parks” line. This art program places characters from “Cars” at Disney Parks, and they inspired a recently released Disney ear hat featuring Tow Mater sporting a Goofy hat (to which I fully expect to see being worn during the Car Masters Weekend).

Tow Mater Disney Ear Hat

These select merchandise items will be found at D Street and DisneyQuest Emporium located at Downtown Disney West Side starting May 13. Select items will also be carried at Once Upon a Toy and World of Disney located in the Downtown Disney Marketplace.

While I am doubtful I will find an actual Finn McMissile car during the weekend (I’m in the market for a new automobile), I hope to see you at the finish line.

Retro Looking Vinyl Tease

Update: 11 PM We took a look at the vinylmation.com blog tonight as part of our rounds and notice something interesting. The Rotary Telephone pic was a little different. It’s lost the grey outline around the body and is all red now. Any ideas what this might mean? It doesn’t seem like a variant. More like some odd photoshop removal that they forgot before publishing. Here’s a look at the new one…

The Disney Vinylmation Blog released some pictures of upcoming figures. They all seem to have a retro theme to them. We are not sure if these are from the same upcoming set or not.

Jukebox

Looks like an old school jukebox. I like the music notes in the ears.
Dark Side of the Mouse

Looks like a peak into the 60s or 70s with a psychedelic space theme. Check out the Mickey head in the foot!
Rotary Telephone

A nod to the era when it took 5 minutes to call someone. And whats that in the head? Phones once had cords? And look, another phone number on a vinylmation!

Are you interested in any of these? They look pretty neat, if they are 3″ers.
