M.C. Rescues Some D-Street Releases

M.C. braved the rain to hit up D-Street today. Let’s see what he found…

Rescuers 2-Pack with Bernard and Bianca from Animation 2 for $26.95. He was excited enough to wake up early and go grab these. I enjoy the design, but not enough to grab them. Especially since I never really had a connection to this movie. No real line reported and plenty of the 2-pack still left. We will probably see them for sale at tonight’s trading event at the Contemporary.

Junior 5 also officially released today. M.C. grabbed some chaser shots. Oddly enough, they were out in the open in the display.

Smoke and Mirrors. Love this one! Looks like Junior 5 is giving us the first clear part Jrs. The smoke is actually painted onto a clear head and body.

Peanut Butter and Jelly. Don’t like as much, but a cool use of a clear purple bottom.

Also today, the 3″ Valentine’s Day figure was out in the stores. This is a very lovely display.

Spotlight On: Custom Vinylmation Artist Shannyn

Shannyn sent us in some more customs. This time she focuses on the Disney ducks.

First, a great looking Donald and Daisy painted on the front of this colorful canvas. It even has hearts stuck onto the head and ear.

The back shows a love letter from Donald to his sweetheart.

Then she made a 3″ set of nephews. Each one individualized with their colors, different facial expression and varying ear designs.

I have always struggled with my duck tails and all three of my customs have a different style. I really like the way Shannyn approached the tail and might give it a shot myself. Great work Shannyn!

Spotlight On: Custom Vinylmation Artist Nick

After Santa Donald, the second custom in my planned line of Donald Ducks was Star Tours Donald.

I always start with the body. Mostly because I avoid doing the head as long as possible.

That was my first sketch of a face outline onto the canvas. One thing i learned quickly was how difficult it is to translate a 2D drawing to a 3D mold.

It sometimes takes a few tries to be satisfied with the outline and don’t be afraid to redesign a few times in the process so it looks best instead of trying to force anything.

There he is without some of the facial details.

After getting the face done, I started on the ears. My idea for Star Tours Donald was he is a Cast Member that is a bit worried as he looks up to the sky and notices a Star Speeder 1000 (the vehicle the guests travel in) heading right toward the Death Star. I actually painted over that Death Star. So hard to get little details down that at my current talent level I have to kind of stylize it instead.

The final version. I’m very happy with the final version. The Star Speeder also took a couple tries as I learned to take out details. It is soooooo small. So the lines are not as straight as I really wanted. I like the detail on this Death Star over the previous picture, the lines and colors make more sense. I am extremely happy with the way I can draw Donald’s face. The costume was fun and well represents the real one. I did struggle with two things; the shoulder patches and name tag. I decided in the end that the patches would clutter the body and the detail was so small on them. I practiced and decided that if I couldn’t make them look great, he was better without them. The name tag was also omitted as to not clutter the front. I also found it hard to make it look right.

As with my previous custom, I painted along side my friend Rachel who is creating a Fantasia set. She started with the Mop and Buckets and I have an update. She originally made the buckets out of clay, but has since did a redesign and used Juniors to represent the buckets!

It was a great idea that was well executed.

This time around, she made a Low Hop.

Remember I talked about the struggle to translate a 2D drawing to a 3D mold? She went back and forth with the decision to stretch Low Hop over the whole mold and wrap him around. She eventually decided against this and just painted him onto the front. One of the big factors was the foot flopping up looked best this way and that is an important feature. But then the problem of what to put on the back.

She decided on a scene we see in the movie with grass and flowers and the silhouettes of the mushrooms in the foreground. She also added multi-colored glitter to the ears to represent the dust at the beginning of scene that falls from the sky.

Cutesters Set List Washes Up On Shore

Cutesters at the Beach will be the 4th set in the Cutesters series of Vinylmation. Like the 3rd set, “Like You”, Beach will be a Disney Store exclusive. We have heard about a February 10th release date although now announcement yet by Disney. What do we know about this set? 3 figures were put on display at The Florida Project back in September: Lifeguard, Snorkeler and Beach Ball.

We have since heard rumor of the rest of the set list: Crab, Turtle, Volleyball Player, Snow Cone Stand, Snow Cone, Seagull, Starfish/Sand Dollar, Surfer.

A crab would be great! They can put the claws or eyes up in the ears. Or maybe claws instead of hands… its been done before.

A turtle would also look great. Neck extension so you can extend and lower the head? Accessory shell on back?

A snow cone fits mighty well onto the canvas. Will it be like above or more “cute” with like a cartoon face?

A seagull could be drawn very cute and can certainly look great on the canvas. Questions: Beak? Tail? Wings?

Again, like the snow cone, will this be drawn “cute” with a face? Or just some shells against the sand?

It’s rumored to be a surfer girl in a wet suit. will she have an accessory surfboard or just painted on?

Besides the mystery chaser, that is what we know. The DV team’s chaser guesses: Sand Castle, Shark, Metal Detector? What are your thoughts on this set list and a guess at the chaser?

Cutesters at the Beach Explained

Cutesters at the Beach
Release Date: February 10, 2012
Where: Disney Stores and D-Streets
Price: $9.95
Details: This is the 4th set in the Cutesters series. The second released as a Disney Store exclusive.

Update: 01/26/12 Pictures of entire set added. (taken at WDW trading event) We also found out this series, unlike Cutesters 3 Like You, will be released at D-Streets as well.

Update: 01/26/12 Besides the three figures confirmed at the Florida Project (Lifeguard, Snorkeler, Beach Ball) the rumored set list is as follows: Crab, Turtle, Volleyball Player, Snow Cone Stand, Snow Cone, Seagull, Starfish/Sand Dollar, Surfer.

Lifeguard

This set premiers some new accessories. Lifeguard has a visor. The swim suit has the white cross on it and a whistle is painted on around her neck.
Snorkeler

We saw this one at the Florida Project. The goggles look good in person and are a fun addition. The bubbles in the ears really help this one pull off the underwater feel.
Beach Ball

This is a very good fit and a perfect use of the entire canvas. A splash of water at the feet, footprints in the sand, beach ball in the head and a sun shining bright in the ear.
Crab

Absolutely brilliant design. Cartoonish crab peeking out over the sand with sea shells in the foreground. The crab fits perfectly.
Turtle

For sure fits the title Cutester.
Volleyball Player

A neat design with the goggles shaded in over the eyes. She has a big volleyball painted on the body.
Snow Cone Stand

What a smart design and goes perfectly with the Snow Cone vinyl. Really three parts to this one… sand in feet, stand and sign in body, and the order window in the head! Great.
Snow Cone

Another design that just fits in so many ways. A clear body and clear ears are used and I agree 100% with the choice.
Seagull

For sure a cute face. Many of the faces, especially on the animals, have similar characteristics blending this set seamlessly together.
Sea Shells

Simple, but effective and fits the set nicely.
Surfer

Maybe the most ordinary figure in the set. A blond girl with sun screen on the nose and wearing a wet suit. I do like the bird in the ear.

Mystery Chaser

Sand Castle, Scuba Diver, Metal Detector? What are your thoughts?

Tapestry of Nations Set

Update: 01/28/12 Pictures of set taken at trading event. We also learned that this 6 figure set was designed by Casey Jones and is five 3″ and one Jr. Remember, it releases February 3rd for $99.95 and is LE 2000.

01/27/12 Among various announcements, Disney has sneaked in a release under the radar and onto the Events page. On February 3, a 6 figure set depicting the Tapestry of Nations Parade will release at Walt Disney World and Disneyland D-Streets. This LE 2000 set will retail for $99.95. In addition to D-Street, this set will also be on sale at select locations at Epcot including MouseGear, Disney’s Traders in World Showcase, Mission: SPACE Cargo Bay and World Traveler. No pictures have been released yet, but here is a look at what could be in the set. The parade ran through EPCOT from 1999 to 2001 and had a unity and world peace them. The parade was populated by large puppets on rotating drums.

There are a lot of puppets and performers to choose from. The only one I would be on being in there would be the Sage of Time shown above. That was the leader of the parade. The pictures below show examples of what could be in this set.

Release Dates Confirmed

Today Disney confirmed some release dates.

On Friday, January 27, this Bernard and Bianca 2 pack from Animation 2 will release a D-Streets for $26.95. It is an LE 1200.

Jr 5 This and That releases at D-Streets and other park locations on Friday, January 27 as well. We have seem these around the parks already, but things get official tomorrow.

It wasn’t a misprint… this ONLINE EXCLUSIVE 9″ Park 8 Main Street Electrical Parade Dragon retails for the ridiculously high price of $74.95. No 9″ has ever been priced so high. They made 1500 of these! Its already just an OK design in my opinion. I have a feeling this one will be 50% next Christmas. This is our first look at the turnaround and Maria did a great job. I’m actually coming around on liking this design after seeing the whole thing, but not for 75 bucks.

Our best look yet at this trio. Love it! Can not wait to pick this Fife and Drum set up for $44.95. It is an LE of 5000 and is also an ONLINE EXCLUSIVE.

Sorcerer’s of the Magic Kingdom

I’m not sure if I’m supposed to be sharing this with you. You see, I’m secretly a sorcerer. Yep. With the help of my Disney character friends I can actually cast spells that defeat some of the most notorious villains around. Don’t believe me? Why just yesterday I took down Scar and his Hyenas and even stopped Cruella Deville from stealing a valuable diamond. But, I do have one small problem, my powers only work inside the Magic Kingdom.

It all started when I showed up yesterday with my friend Austin just to take pictures of some Vinylmation around the park. When I was quickly whisked into the Main Street Fire house where they asked for my pass then swiped it through this machine. I thought they were onto us for sneaking behind the ropes inside the Pirates queue line to get some cool photos. But instead, I was handed 5 amazing playing cards, a Sorcerer’s Key Card and a Sorcerer’s of the Magic Kingdom map. This is the newest attraction at MK and it is included with park admission… and you get to keep the cards! I’ll tell you all about the game itself, but these cards are fantastic and I’m calling it right now… they WILL become a collectible.

The cards have beautiful artwork depicting different Disney characters and they let you know what spell can be cast with that card. The cards also have attributes assigned to them. All this will make sense soon, but just know these cards will be fun to collect. Disney was brilliant in actually numbering the cards as well.

There are 70 in all. Your pass will only let you play once per day and the cards are handed out at random. So you can see the replayability and trading possibilities. So fun!

Before I was sent out on my mission, I was taken to a video screen at the back of the Fire House where I was given a brief tutorial by Merlin from Sword in the Stone. I think it was a great choice to use this under used character as the main protagonist in the game. I was then sent to my first location.

Now, it must be noted that the game is still in a testing phase. Like any Role Playing Game (RPG), I would expect the need to use some strategy as to what spells to use for best effect on a particular enemy. However, this level of strategy was not “turned on” today. I was told there would be three levels of difficulty guests could choose. All games were set on easy today, where strategy was not involved.

As seen on the game map, there are 20 portals, 5 in each of the 4 playing areas. Main Street USA, Adventureland, Fantasyland and Liberty Square/Frontierland. The portals are flat video screens that interact with you and your cards and are well themed as to fit in with the location where they are placed. Some were very well posistioned, like this one inside the train station that was hidden in the departure/arrival board.

And this one tucked inside the fireplace inside the dining area of Tortuga Tavern.

There is only one so far I disagree with. For the most part Imagineers did a great job not destroying anything, but this one inside The Little Mermaid Emporium window display distracts from the fun window displays we all know and love.

In concept, the comparisons to Kim Possible at EPCOT are unavoidable, but the technology is more like that of the Midship Detective Agency aboard the Disney Dream cruise ship. Sorcerers is played like the Midship game and has the interactivity of Kim Possible but varies in some important aspects. Kim Possible has environments that actually move. Water sprouts, characters move into view, etc. In Sorcerer’s, all the actions are video based. However, there are some well timed lighting effects like when a spell hits the villain. And in some locations there are small moving parts like curtains that draw back to unveil the screen. I could use a few more moving parts, but the more video based it is, the easier it will be to update the experience every few years. Let’s just hope they do.

Each land contains a number of different quests. For example, in Adventureland we played through a Lion King based quest but there is also Aladdin and to my amazement and great delight… Emperor’s New Groove! Fantasyland has Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid and others. So unlike Kim Possible, you don’t have to hide your eyes and cover your ears while waiting in line to get your own experience. Because mostly likely you will have different scene play out. And with all the lands and movies in use, the game is remarkably replayable. Not to mention the idea of your pass storing your info so your spells become stronger the more you play. Not sure how that idea plays out yet.

As I said, the game itself was very lacking on this easy setting, however kids could not be more spell bound (pun not intended) by the interaction. They just gathered like moths to a flame to watch guests flash cards in front of a screen and make things happen like magic. But having not experienced the real game itself, what stole the show for me was the animation and story lines.

Each quest had it’s own story line that made sense based on the characters involved. They also had their own animation style. While Lion King was all “normal” animation, 101 Dalmatians was a stylized still frame montage. The drawings were beautiful and in all cases the voice acting was top notch. The over-riding villain causing all the ruckus around MK is Hades from Hercules and even he takes on different personas in the quests.

Although being an RPG, this is a linear game. Meaning you are told exactly what portal to go to next until your game is over. But even though you don’t have that much choice, and your scenes are laid out ahead of time, you can actually loose battles on the harder difficulties. I can’t wait to see exactly how the attributes on each cards can be strategically used to advance your quest. This is not a game you will always win… and I love that! It’s a great twist on a Disney Parks product.

If you accidentally head to the wrong portal and swipe your card, you are directed back on track. Frequent park visitors should recognize the next location based on the picture on the screen, but each portal is also associated with a symbol that matches up with the map.

The technology worked rather flawlessly for us. It all starts by swiping your key card in front of the lock at each portal. This “turns on” your screen. Your key card has an embedded RFID chip that tracks your movements and supposedly achievements. Not sure how long term this tracking is, but it would be cool to be able to keep track of your personal all-time stats. Right now I’ve been told the game stays active on your key card for one week allowing guests to conveniently pick up were they left off over the course of their vacation.

The card worked well, but you do need to hold it right on the lock and it may take a couple swipes. Spells are cast by holding a spell card straight out, face forward in front of you.

At each portal you can see a camera on each side of the screen that recognizes your card and triggers the correct spell. This worked every time… as long as you were standing on the “Circle of Power”.

A logo that sits about 5 feet away from each portal. When we were just a foot to the side, it didn’t recognize our spell and we were attacked.

The individual spells are unique to each character card. Bolt’s is really cool.

Play his card and the dog’s head appears as he Super Barks at the villain. Hold up the Headless Horseman and a flaming pumpkin head is thrown.

The animations a really great, however the video transitions are just a notch below seamless. I would compare it to a DVD menu screen that plays a loop. You know how there is often a little hiccup where you can tell it just looped?

I think the portals are placed in well planned positions as to not create much of a traffic issue, but there is a tiny noise problem. It seems the interactions are much louder than Kim Possible and you can hear everything as you walk past. Although I am all for this level of interactivity, from a purists point of view it does distract a bit from the well thought out sounds of each themed land which is a trademark of the Disney Parks. Not sure how this can be overcome except to bring the volume down a bit. I thought of wireless headphones, but that would drive up the cost severely for Disney in the production and upkeep of something like that.

Overall, this is a perfect move toward heightened guest interaction at the Disney Parks. It immerses the guest in a fun game and offers an experience in between queue lines. I often feel like I’m at home at Walt Disney World and have a personal stake in the place. A game like this just reinforces that feeling. I’m interacting in a new way with the park I know and love and I have a stake at keeping it safe from villains! The stories play out well, the animation is top-notch and as long as the higher difficulties offer a challenge to older players, this will be a long-time hit with endless possibilities.

Delays and Releases at the Disney Store

Disney’s Vinylmation website today has announced the Disney Store 25th Light Up series will be delayed indefinitely. It was originally scheduled for a January 30th release. We know the product is sitting in the backs of some Disney Stores around the country… does this point to a possible production quality issue?

Also, Disney Store Tunes will hit stores on February 20th! All figures except Classic Rock Donald and 80’s Dale.
