PHOTOS, VIDEO, REVIEW: Frozen Ever After Opens at Epcot; May Be Disney’s Best Dark Ride

The wait is finally over, Frozen Ever After has opened in the Norway pavilion of World Showcase at Epcot. The ride utilizes what was the space occupied by the Maelstrom attraction, reusing boats and some sections of track, but that is where the similarities end. In what may be their finest feat in modern dark rides, the attraction is a marvelous combination of audio animatronics, projection technology, and beautiful backdrops.

image2 (2)

The queue was completely rebuilt, you won’t find anything resembling Maelstrom here.

image4 (1)

The queue is gorgeous, taking place in a small courtyard and through Oaken’s Sauna.

First off, the attraction is hard to photograph, as are most Disney dark rides. Your best bet for a good look at the ride will be our video later in this post.

The attraction begins with a walking, talking Olaf that has to be seen to be believed.

The trolls then make an appearance before the lift hill.

Upstairs, guests will find Anna, Kristoff, and Sven singing.

Guests then enter Elsa’s ice palace and watch as she transforms the room around them.

Also, there are puffins from Maelstrom!

Anna, Elsa, and Olaf appear in the final scene to say goodbye to guests (it wasn’t working when we went through, but supposedly has been fixed already).

And now, here’s a full video of the queue and on-ride experience of Frozen Ever After:

Frozen Ever After is a masterpiece of modern Disney Imagineering. They took a very confined space and built one of their very best dark rides ever. The animatronics are stunning, the scenes are perfectly crafted, and it is sure to please guests of all ages. While the capacity may be a little low with the usage of the old Maelstrom boats and the attraction may not be the best fit for Epcot, the attraction otherwise excels in all areas. Frozen Ever After is certainly a must see at Epcot and will be for a long, long time to come.

VIDEO: Epcot Introduces “Norway Viking” Streetmosphere Act

If you find yourself feeling like there is a deficiency in the number of vikings at Epcot with Maelstrom gone, don’t fear, because the park recently introduced a pair of comedic barbarians for guests to interact with.

The pair can be found roaming the pavilion and promenade during the day, entertaining nearby guests as they pass by. Here’s a video of the pair out and about on Friday:

REVIEW: La Cantina de San Angel in Mexico Begins Breakfast Service in Preparation for Frozen at Epcot

With the opening of Frozen Ever After approaching, the Mexico and Norway pavilion have been testing out their new 9AM opening time with some new breakfast options. Over in Mexico, La Cantina de San Angel now opens with the park and offers four breakfast plates (and no margaritas before 11am, before you even ask me):

image

image

The tamal verde con huevos was a good sized dish for the price. The tamale was a little dry, but not bad. The scrambled eggs (or huevos) served with each dish are pretty good, slightly better than the Disney-made counter service scrambled eggs elsewhere.

image

The chilaquiles was the best of all of the dishes in both presentation and taste. Similar in texture to the tamale, this did not have the same dry taste. This would be my recommendation if you are eating here.

image

The pambazo de chorizo is a weird dish, almost tasting like a hamburger covered in marinara sauce. It wasn’t bad, just strange, especially for breakfast.

image

The huevos revueltos kid’s meal is a good size dish and includes a beverage and fruit. The potatoes had a good flavor, and all of the fruit tasted very fresh.

image

Overall, La Cantina serves up a solid breakfast. I’m not sure if they are adding this out of necessity, but I don’t think this is where I would get breakfast at Epcot if given a choice. The bakeries in France and Norway have a really solid pastry lineup I would likely choose over this, and I might even be more likely to go for an adult breakfast platter from Sunshine Seasons over this location. The lack of indoor seating for breakfast doesn’t help the cause in the summer months either. Personally, I would skip this in favor of almost any other breakfast option at Epcot, even if it is on the way to Norway.

“Finding Dory” Swims To Break Box Office Records; Pulls In $136 Million Domestic Opening Weekend

finding-dory

This weekend, “Finding Dory” swam into theaters and beat the competition to become the #1 Highest Grossing Domestic Movie for the weekend grossing a total of $136.1 million! Back in 2003, “Finding Nemo’s” opening weekend domestic gross was $70.2 million.

“Finding Dory” broke the box office record for the Opening Weekend Record for an Animated Film which was $121.6 million and previously held by “Shrek The Third”. The film also broke the animation record for the Largest Single Day and Opening Day amount with a domestic gross of $54.9 million.

Here is a list of the Highest Grossing Worldwide Movies of 2016 and as you can see “Captain America: Civil War” leads the way but both “Zootopia” and “The Jungle Book” are still chugging along. “Civil War” is now ranked as the 12th Highest Grossing Worldwide Movie Of All Time and “Zootopia” has just passed “The Dark Knight” to take the number 25 spot.xc cxc cxx c

REVIEW: Disney Infinity “Finding Dory” Play Set Offers Hours of Fun

Note: I completed all of the story missions in the Finding Dory Play Set. I also played a few side missions and completed all of the challenges. In the end, I played roughly seven hours. The following review reflects only my time spent during this play through.

81VRhhrLQKL._SL1500_

It pains me to admit it, but the final piece of content for Disney Infinity is officially here. This marks the end of the line for Avalanche Software’s fantastic toys-to-life Disney game. With that said, the Finding Dory Play Set was created during a time when the team thought the franchise still had a long and bright future ahead. This Play Set was not designed to be a farewell to fans, it was supposed to be the next Play Set of many. The Finding Dory Play Set feels like an odd send-off for the series, though it clearly was never intended to be the last piece of content.

Alright, all despondent fanboy feeling aside, let’s get into the review. The game’s story centers around Dory and friends returning to the MLI after a flooding takes place. Playing as either Dory or Nemo, your objective is to rescue all the fish you can. Once a level is complete, you return to the ocean with your new fish friends in a community that Dory and Marlin have constructed for the transient fish.

Dory and Nemo can attack with their tail’s and trap enemies in bubbles. Although adding fish characters to the Disney Infinity roster sounds like a challenge, the final product results in some of the game’s most interesting characters. The majority of the gameplay is 2D side scrolling adventure-esque, while the hub world, side missions, and challenges are all in third-person.  The camera is a bit weird while swimming in third-person but not enough to really hinder gameplay. Much like the Inside Out Play Set, I found myself wishing more of the game was third-person. Still, the 2D play style is fun and unlike Inside Out, I found myself more engaged throughout missions.

Screenshot-Original-2

The game’s 13 story missions consist of making it from point A to point B, while trying to find all the stray fish you can. The levels offer small puzzles that never progressed enough to really challenge me, though I would not hold that against the game seeing as Disney Infinity is an all-ages game.

Screenshot-Original-1

Surprisingly, the levels do change enough in variety that I was always entertained. Some levels have you jumping from fish tank to fish tank while defeating enemies, and other levels have you avoiding kids grabbing at you as you try and make your way through the touch pool.

Screenshot-Original

Another fun element to the gameplay is the addition of tools, or in this case, assistants. Throughout the game you unlock a shrimp, a cuttlefish, and a crab that all possess different abilities that help you to solve puzzles and unlock new areas. While their contributions are simple, it sure adds some variety to the gameplay and prevents the player from completing a level simply by pushing the analog stick in the right direction.

Once the story is complete, you can return to previous levels to gain access to new areas and collectibles. You can also play around in the hub world, continue to customize the community you’ve built, and beat your previous records on challenges. Overall, the Play Set offers a lot for the $30 asking price.

Speaking of which, this is the second time a Play Set has only included one figure (the first being Marvel Battlegrounds). The box includes the Finding Dory Play Set piece and the Dory figure. Nemo is available for purchase separately and includes two Power Discs.71CDYTOW8XL._SL1500_ The decision to include the power discs with Nemo rather than selling a separate Power Disc pack leads me to wonder if this was Disney’s response to try and move the remainder of their inventory. Of course we will probably never know but it does make one wonder…

71Y3kdAJjBL._SL1368_

Presentation wise the game looks and sounds as good as ever. The Disney Infinity art style looks  fantastic across all Disney owned properties and Finding Dory is no exception. Everything from the figures (especially the figures) to the art style is a visual treat! My only gripe is the game’s voice acting. While most characters in the Play Set sound great, Marlin is painfully bad. The voice actor that plays him tried so desperately to capture the voice of Albert Brooks, but ultimately just created painful dissonance.

Overall I think fans of Disney Infinity will be quite pleased with the Finding Dory Play Set. I had a lot of fun plying it, and while it is certainly not the best Play Set, it is a really good one. The gameplay, while not reinventing the wheel, is engaging throughout, and the world is unlike anything seen before in Disney Infinity.

Finding Dory is yet another reflection of the love and hard work that has been poured into the Disney Infinity series. While it is not a proper send-off, it has been a gift for me to have one last go at a new adventure set in the Disney Infinity universe.

PHOTOS, VIDEO, REVIEW: Royal Sommerhus FROZEN Character Meet and Greet Opens in Norway at Epcot

Despite an announced June 21st opening date, the Royal Sommerhus meet and greet opened to the public on Friday at Epcot. The Frozen meet and greet pavilion is the new home to Anna and Elsa and opens at 9am (which is when Frozen Ever After and the Norway and Mexico pavilions will now open come Tuesday morning).

The architecture is beautiful, seamlessly fitting into the existing World Showcase.

The team that brought this project to life really went above and beyond to fit the Royal Sommerhus into World Showcase. This is by far one of, if no the most authentically themed space in all of World Showcase, and it is home to a meet and greet… not a restaurant, not a ride, but just a space to meet Anna and Elsa. The attention to detail and the effort by Disney to decrease lines to meet their most popular characters can only be seen as a massive success. The Royal Sommerhus is a pleasant addition to the park that takes away from the existing experience in no way, in fact, the facade does a wonderful job filling in an otherwise forgotten expansion pad in Epcot.

VIDEO, REVIEW: Star Wars – A Galactic Spectacular, Is It Better Than Previous Show

It’s no secret that Symphony in the Stars was one of my favorite fireworks shows of all time, so when we broke the news that Disney was going to kicking the show up a notch with new lighting, projection mapping, and fire, to say I was excited would be an understatement.

Last night, Star Wars – A Galactic Celebration debuted at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. If you haven’t seen it yet, we do have video:

There are some fantastic “WOW” moments in the show, from a smoke cloud that is used as a projection surface, to the fact that all of the trees in the Center Stage area were rigged with lights (which is actually why I chose the spot we were in to film this). There is some fantastic newer technology at play in this show and the projections, lighting, and effects around guests are stupendous.

My major issue with the show is the amount of fireworks and the location of them. The new launch site behind the park is far, far away and very off center. As you can see in our video, we are standing at an extreme angle, but the fireworks appear straight away from us despite that. Also, there is a lot less pyro than the previous show. Some are saying it is budget cut related, but I tend to think it’s just a different style show and the fireworks not being so close gives the show less of an impact. The thing that made the Studios fireworks shows different was how close you felt to the action and the large barrages of fireworks they would use to make up for the fact that they couldn’t do as big of a show as Magic Kingdom. Apparently, if we want Star Wars and Toy Story Land, we’re going to have to live with this new launch site for fireworks. Luckily, this show does its very best to counter that with a lot of really neat effects (barring the flamethrowers which missed the debut show).

Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular is really good, it just lacks the bang of the previous show, but you may just be distracted enough by all of the new, fun technology they installed to notice. It is definitely worth seeing on your next visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
