ESPN Films to Offer Sneak Preview at D23 Expo

ESPN Films to Offer Sneak Preview at D23 Expo

By Joshua Hall

Fawcett, Sobrero and Venturini celebrate

If you’re like me, sports are an integral part of everyday life. I wake up in the morning and check out the latest sports news on my phone while still lying in bed. Next, I get ready for the day and enjoy a cup of coffee while watching the sports headlines on TV. As I drive to work, I listen to more sports headlines on the radio. When I get to work, I settle into my routine of checking scores, talking with my coworkers, and even receiving text updates on (you guessed it) sports. Also, if you’re like me, you’re familiar with ESPN Films, the production company that is dedicated to telling true stories of exciting, tear-jerking, and heroic moments in sports. The same company is well-known for its 30 for 30 series that celebrated ESPN’s thirtieth anniversary by producing 30 documentaries covering a wide range of great moments from sports lore and athletes’ careers including Wayne Gretzky’s trade to the LA Kings, George Steinbrenner’s ownership of the Yankees, and Michael Jordan’s  stint in baseball (my personal favorite).

Now, ESPN Films is introducing a new series called Nine for IX. This series will be produced in recognition of the 40th anniversary of Title IX and will air over nine consecutive Thursdays at 8 PM starting on July 2nd with a documentary covering Venus Williams. The series will also cover other great female sports figures such as the legendary coach, Pat Summit and Sheryl Swoops, who many call the female Michael Jordan. Also included in the Nine for IX lineup is an installment covering the US Women’s National Soccer Team at the 1999 World Cup. Entitled The ‘99ers, this documentary covers the team’s penalty kick shootout victory over China to win the world cup and inspire the world. The film also includes behind-the-scenes footage that candidly helps to tell the story from the players’ point of view. By reuniting players from the 1999 team and by including players from the current team, The ‘99ers also takes a look into how women’s sports have changed since that day in 1999.

On August 11 at this year’s D23 Expo, attendees will have a chance to see an exclusive screening of the film as part of the Ultimate Disney Fan Event. The screening will also include a special Q&A session with the film’s director Erin Leyden and producer Julie Foudy. This will be a great opportunity of sports fans and movie buffs alike as it will provide insight on this epic moment in sports history and also the process of creating a sports documentary.

The screening will take place in Stage 28 at the Anaheim Convention Center on Sunday, August 11 at 2:30 PM PT.

D23 Releases Images from Walt Disney’s Personal Camera

D23 Releases Images from Walt’s Camera

By Michael Truskowski

I have never really spent much time in the D23 website despite being a charter member. I just didn’t find a whole lot of content that was interesting. But Disney has finally addressed this with a revamped, members only section of the website.

Don’t want to join D23? Now you can get a free membership that grants you access to the website without costing you a single dollar. Of course, if you want the magazine, access to special events, and other benefits from your membership, you still need to pay the annual fee. But if you are simply curious about the web content, there really is no reason not to sign up.

As a way of announcing the new site (and driving traffic to it), they released several never before seen images of Walt, taken with his own personal camera. Two of the images were released to the general public.

The first shows Walt in June 1951 on a family trip to Denmark. (Although we have to wonder, whose camera is Walt holding if this picture was captured with Walt’s camera?)

Walt D23 1

The second shows a younger (1940’s) Walt asleep in his lawn on some sort of lounge mat, thing. It is always interesting to see someone famous when their guard is down, living their normal life. Think of every other image of Walt you have ever seen. He is almost always working. We tend to think of him now as just being Disney the company (which happens when you give your name to what ends up being one of the largest companies in the world). But this photo reminds us all that he was, in many ways, just like us.

Walt D23 2

Some of the other photos on the D23 website include photos of the girls on the carousel. Yes, those girls on that carousel. You know, the one which served as the inspiration for Walt to build Disneyland. Also in one of the carousel photos is a very young Roy E. Disney. Another part of Walt’s life that readers of this are no doubt aware of is the Carolwood Pacific railroad, Walt’s backyard train, and the predecessor to the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Railroads. There are also several photos of his wife Lillian, who we do not get to see nearly as often as her husband.

What I love about these photos is that the really do look like someone’s family photos, not studio publicity pictures. It is an interesting mix of history and human interest. It is accessible at D23.com as a part of the D’scovered series. If you have not been around the D23 site lately, it is worth a trip back. If you have never been there, go grab a free membership and take a look around.

Dirk Wallen’s 6/27/13 WDW Photo Report

WDWNT Reporter Dirk Wallen visited Animal Kingdom, the Villas at the Grand Floridian, and Epcot earlier today and took some great photos to share with us, so let’s take a look:

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

Starting at Animal Kingdom, Kodak signage is gone from the Camera Center

With FastPass+ currently testing, It’s Tough to be a Bug once again has a FastPass queue

There are still some construction walls up under the Tree of Life, meaning they are still installing nets under it

Wow, they’ve caught plenty of stuff…

Over at Camp Minnie-Mickey, this theater is still just stroller parking

Since it isn’t closing in this location just yet, they are using FastPass+ at Festival of the Lion King

Pocahontas has moved into one of the greeting trails at Camp Minnie-Mickey

Chip and Dale have moved into another

Work continues on the new Festival of the Lion King theater in Africa

Still not much to see

Work is wrapping up on the FastPass+ queue at Finding Nemo: The Musical

The signage is now up

Leaving Animal Kingdom, work continues on the Villas at the Grand Floridian

I’m not crazy about the plain white sides, but I’ll hold my judgement until the building is finished

Scaffolding is down on the water side and it looks fantastic

Work continues on the new bus loop at the Magic Kingdom

More turnstile conversions happening at Epcot

The middle section that is typically the exit is walled-off

Some touch-point entrances are going to be here soon

In other news, they are still patching up the landscaping from the Flower and Garden Festival

WDWNT: The Magazine – A Disney Animation Legend Remembered

A Disney Animation Legend Remembered

By Joshua Hall

When I say Pixar, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Maybe the hopping lamp or the rubber ball with the star on it? Better yet, who comes to mind? How about Steve Jobs, the man who funded PIXAR when it became an independent company? Or John Lasseter, Pixar’s visionary genius who helped to bring the company to Hollywood fruition? Sure there are others: Pete Doctor, Ed Catmull, the list goes on and on but there is another Pixar great that you might not have heard of. I’m talking about Joe Ranft. You know, Joe Ranft? He was an animator, storyteller, and occasional voice actor. Heimlich the Caterpillar, Wheezy the Penguin, and Jacques the Shrimp (viola, he is clean!) all have one thing in common: Joe Ranft. Still don’t know him? From Toy Story to Cars, Joe worked on them all and he did so with artistic savvy and quiet diligence. Alright, alright…so who was this guy and what else did he do?

Image216

Back in the good ‘ol days when animated features were still being made by hand one drawing at a time, a young boy born in Pasadena began to take an early interest in the arts. He fancied himself a storyteller, he liked to draw and make people laugh. He enjoyed film and the occasional magic trick. That young boy was Joe Ranft. With such a personality, it comes as no surprise that Joe, now a young man, enrolled at California Institute of the Arts where he studied animation and began to hone his skills as a writer and as an animator. After two years of study, Joe was offered a job and began working for Walt Disney Studios as a writer and storyboard artist in 1980. During these early days of Joe’s work, he received occasional training from the legendary Eric Lawson, who was one of Walt Disney’s original animators known as the “Nine Old Men”.

During his time with Disney, Joe worked on several animated features as a writer and animator; major blockbusters such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and the Lion King just to name a few. It was also during this time that Joe met John Lasseter. In the early 90s, Joe left Disney and joined Lasseter at Pixar where he took his first job as story supervisor for Toy Story, a role for which he received his only Academy Award nomination (Best Writing). Joe would continue to work at Pixar. He wrote and provided the occasional voice for many Pixar classics such as A Bug’s Life, Monster’s Inc.,  The Incredibles, and even some small voice credits in Cars (I’m not a Mack, I’m a Peterbuilt!)

Sadly, Joe’s life came to a tragic end when a car he was riding in crashed. He was on his way to a conference where successful businessmen help to mentor young men who are trying to straighten out their lives. Few have made such an impact.

In 2006, Joe was recognized as a Disney Legend, an accolade that is so well deserved. I hope you’ll join me in remembering this amazing storyteller, animator, and human being. Thanks Joe for everything you’ve given to make our day just a little bit brighter.

“It’s fun to draw for me and explore what’s there. To create a drawing and see it come alive, you’ve caught something, something unique.” – Joe Ranft

“For every laugh, there should be a tear.” – Walt Disney

“Teen Beach Movie” Beach Party Now Running at Typhoon Lagoon

tbp820200small

Starting Monday, June 24, guests of Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park can enjoy a taste of the new Disney Channel Original Movie “Teen Beach Movie” as part of Limited Time Magic.

Running at various times throughout each day through Sept. 1, “Teen Beach Movie”: Dance Party will feature a hip DJ spinning remixes of retro tunes, beach-y-themed games and some really rad “bikers” and “surfers” to party with guests as they dance away the dog days. Taking over part of Typhoon Lagoon’s main beach and wave pool area, guests can participate in relays on the sand, hula hoop spinning, water balloon and beach ball tossing, and the grooviest dance moves this side of Mt. Mayday.

“Teen Beach Movie,” a modern take on classic beach party movies, premieres Friday, July 19, on Disney Channel. Starring are Ross Lynch (of Disney Channel’s “Austin & Ally” and Hollywood Records’ R5) and Maia Mitchell (ABC Family’s “The Fosters”) as Brady and McKenzie, surfers who take the last wave of summer, one that mysteriously takes them into a classic beach party movie, Wet Side Story. Brady and McKenzie must try to return to present day, but their lives may be changed forever when they inadvertently change the movie’s romantic storyline.

What do you think of this new offering at Typhoon Lagoon for the summer?

PHOTOS & VIDEO: Downtown Disney’s Rainforest Cafe Adds Erupting Volcano and Lava Bar

After many months of construction, the new volcano on the Rainforest Cafe at Downtown Disney building was finally completed recently. Much to our surprise, the restaurant now features an erupting volcano! The show takes place in the evening and is best viewed after dark every half-hour starting at 8:30PM (this will probably be an earlier time once we slip into the Winter months). Along with the Volcano, the restaurant also added a new Lava Bar on the outside of the establishment. Photos taken by Joe Hogarty, video by Tom Corless:

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

The new volcano smokes during the day

At night it is really stunning

There is a new animatronic crocodile at the base

The glowing lava is a nice touch

The LAva Lounge is down a path through the volcano, but is really just attached to the side of the building and not the volcano

The bar is nice, but the seating area is fairly plain

IT’S GONNA BLOW!

Crowds gather to watch the 2-minute eruption

Here is our video of the volcano and Lava Bar featuring the full eruption show:

Personally, I think this is a great addition to Downtown Disney. The Lava Bar is fairly standard, but the volcano is definitely of Disney quality and will fit nicely into the new vision of Disney Springs. In a town of many theme parks, it is kind of surprising that the only erupting volcano is in a shopping area, but I think it is offerings like this that will make Disney Springs stand out from other similar venues in town.

What do you think? Is the volcano eruption worth a trip to Downtown Disney? Does this excite you for more Disney Springs changes?

VIDEO: Hands-On with the Upcoming Disney Infinity Video Game

While at Car Masters Weekend last week, I was lucky enough to be amongst the first to get a hands-on demo of the highly anticipated Disney Infinity video game that will be coming out in August. If you haven’t heard about the game at this point, you have probably been living under a rock.

Screen Shot 2013-06-22 at 6.32.24 PM

Here’s a video of the few minutes of playtime I got while attending the event:

Honestly, the amount of time I got to play Disney Infinity was not enough to form a real opinion of the game. There’s just so much more to it and all I really did was play through the introductory Cars mission. What I can say is that the figures for the game are wonderfully produced and look really great, the voice acting in the game is spot-on, and the one mission I played was enjoyable enough that I would like to play some more. Hopefully we will get to see a little more of the game before it is released in a few weeks.

Oh yeah… we did get a free figure for going to the demo which was pretty cool!

So, what do you think of Disney Infinity so far?

Sip a ‘Lone Ranger’ Slush at Disney Parks to Celebrate Film Release July 3

The Disneyland Resort (and the Magic Kingdom) has something tasty and refreshing planned to commemorate the launch of the Lone Ranger on July 3rd.

A root beer slush in a cool Lone Ranger souvenir boot is just a little reminder of the July 3 premiere of Walt Disney Pictures’ “The Lone Ranger” American action-adventure western comedy film.

Found only at Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe in Frontierland in Magic Kingdom Park for $8.99 (3.99 without the souvenir boot). However, if you are visiting Disneyland park, be sure to visit the Golden Horseshoe for a Root Beer Float in the Lone Ranger souvenir boot starting tomorrow.

The new movie stars actor Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger and Johnny Depp as Tonto, the proud American-Indian warrior. (We expect Depp’s version will have a dry sense of humor with Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.)

We’ll sip our root beer slush and patiently wait for July 3!
