Ubisoft Announces Untitled Avatar Video Game

Video game publisher Ubisoft has announced that a game set in the world of James Cameron’s Avatar is now in production at Massive Entertainment, the same studio that made last year’s The Division.

James Cameron’s studio Lightstorm Entertainment is working closely with Massive Entertainment and Fox Interactive to create a world that captures the unique and immersive world of Pandora. The game is being developed in the Snowdrop engine, the same engine that was used to make The Division. Although no official name or release window has been announced, Ubisoft says the game will be available for PC and consoles, though we don’t know which consoles.

In the official reveal trailer above, James Cameron, as well as various developers at Massive talk about the excitement around the undertaking of such a project.

“With the power of Massive’s Snowdrop engine and the team’s passion and obsessive focus on detail, we know they’re the right group to bring the beauty and danger of Pandora to life,” says Cameron in the reveal trailer.

This is one of the first signs of life we’ve seen from the Avatar franchise outside of the upcoming themed land, Pandora – The World of Avatar opening at Disney’s Animal Kingdom may 27. Perhaps the franchise will continue and grow throughout different mediums like it already has begun to do with video games and theme parks. A smart move, seeing as the movie released in 2009, and the franchise has since been dormant.

REMINDER: Disney Infinity Servers Shut Down Today

This Friday marks the end of an era for many fans of the cancelled Disney Infinity series.

On March 3, the servers for all three Disney Infinity games will officially be shut down for good, making players unable to access and download Toy Boxes from the Community Content servers. We have known about this closure since July, so luckily players have had ample time to get online and download all their favorite Toy Boxes before it’s too late. However if you haven’t downloaded your favorite Toy Boxes yet, you still have a small window of opportunity to do so.

 width=

Each game allows users to download up to 300 unique user made Toy Boxes, which should be plenty for most players. Downloading a Toy Box works the same on all three versions of Disney Infinity. From the game’s main menu, simply head over to the Community Content page and select the tab called Disney’s Toy Boxes. Once you pick a Toy Box select download to add it to your list. This way, the Toy Boxes you save will remain on your Xbox One/360, PlayStation 4/3, or Wii U for as long as you decide to keep it there.

Another feature that will be going away forever is Friend Sharing. Friend Sharing allows you to play and download Toy Boxes created by users on your friend list. To download a Toy Box created by a friend, head to the main menu and select Community Content, then Friends, and select a specific friend. A menu will then display all the Toy Boxes created by that friend that have been Friend Shared. Just choose the Toy Box you want and download it, voilá! All downloaded Toy Boxes will be available under the menu Toy Boxes, in the tab Toy Box Saves.

It’s hard to say goodbye to such a beloved series, but thankfully fans have had a long time to enjoy the game before everything shuts down. In other news, the former developer of Disney Infinity, Avalanche Software, has since reformed and is now working on a game for the upcoming Pixar movie, Cars 3.

‘Club Penguin’ is Shutting Down, New Game Coming in March

The 12 year old kid-friendly MMO Club Penguin is shutting down on March 29.

Club Penguin was a social game where kids could create their own avatar, socialize, and decorate their virtual homes. The game seems quite antiquated by today’s standards, yet the dedicated fanbase has kept the game alive all these years.

 width=

Club Penguin officially launched in 2005, and the game was later purchased by Disney in 2007. The game has since had over 200 million registered users, though its popularity has declined significantly over the past few years. Club Penguin was eventually brought over to mobile, where it garnered a second life of sorts, but has since sunk back to an artifact of last decade.

However, there is hope for despondent fans. Club Penguin Island is a new game that will launch in March for mobile. While details are slim on the successor, it promises to bring a modernized social gaming experience for users. Unfortunately, players cannot transfer over their previous existing characters or any currency they have laying around in the old game, but they can pre-register now to reserve their desired username. So uh, you know, ANYTHING is available right now…

As we say goodbye to an era of social online gaming, we introduce a new one. Hopefully Club Penguin Island will satisfy the desires of fans and find itself another fun niche that the first one managed to maintain all these years.

BREAKING: Disney Infinity Team Reformed to Make ‘Cars 3’ Game

Rejoice, Disney Infinity fans! Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has just announced that they have acquired and re-opened Avalanche Software, the studio behind the canceled Disney Infinity series.

The studio will open back up and retain the name Avalanche Software. John Blackburn will resume his position as studio head, with some members of the old team expected to return. Now under control of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Avalanche will be developing a Cars 3 game for the upcoming Disney Pixar movie under the same name.

Warner Bros. has also gotten the rights to the Octane engine, which Avalanche created specifically for developing the Disney Infinity series. Cars 3 is being developed with this engine, so hopefully Disney Infinity fans will find certain aspects of the game to look and feel similar.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad released the following statement,

It is a tremendous pleasure to welcome Avalanche Software into our development stable, and we look forward to working with our new team, Pixar Animation Studios, and DCPI to create ‘Cars 3’ based on the upcoming film and hugely popular franchise. The Avalanche talent and technology are a great addition to our group of outstanding developers, and we are excited for this ‘Cars 3’ game as well as all of the future games the team will create under John’s leadership.

Obviously Avalanche Software has experience with the cars franchise, as Disney Infinity 1.0 included both Cars figures, as well as a Cars 2 Play Set.

Warer Bros. also has previous experience with Disney properties, most recent being the LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens game released last Summer.

No word on when exactly in 2017 the new Cars 3 game will be released, but players can look forward to the return of Avalanche Software, and hopefully a long and healthy partnership between Warner Bros. and The Walt Disney Company.

Marvel Teams up With Square Enix for Multi-Game Deal Including New ‘Avengers Project’

Yesterday, Marvel and major video game publisher Square Enix announced a multi-game licensing and publishing partnership agreement.

 width=

The first game to come from the new partnership will be an Avengers game, currently codenamed “Avengers Project”. The game is being developed by Crystal Dynamics (best known for the recent reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise) as well as Edios-Montréal (best known for the Deus Ex series).

Unfortunately, we won’t hear more about the Avengers game, or any other new projects until 2018, but here is a teaser in the meantime.

http://https://youtu.be/rq_V6WHSmQs

Below is a quote from Jay Ong, senior vice president of of games and entertainment at Marvel:

By partnering with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, we are now working with two of the industry’s most talented and respected game development studios to bring Marvel stories to life in ways our fans have never experienced. The Avengers project is a perfect example of how Marvel is making games a key part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television and film. We can only do this by matching our greatest Super Heroes with the world’s top developers, such as the creative minds at Square Enix.

With this announcement, as well as the recent announcements of Insomniac’s Spider-Man game and Telltale’s Guardians of the Galaxy game, it is clear that Marvel is really trusting well-known highly esteemed publishers and developers with their biggest franchises. Hopefully this will all culminate in some of the best super hero video games ever released.

‘Moana Island Life’ Out Now in United States

Moana Island Life has finally released in the States for iOS, Android, and Amazon devices.

This free-to-play kingdom builder game allows players to explore Oceania through voyaging, creating villages, harvesting crops, and completing quests for local villagers.

Below is a launch trailer for the game.

http://https://youtu.be/q29oq4NqRf8

We originally reported on the game, back in September when it was soft launched on the Canadian App Store. Nearly five months after the game’s release in Canada, and two months after the movie’s theater debut, we finally have the game available here in the States.

As mentioned above, the game is free-to-play, so expect in-game purchases. Here are some screenshots of the game to get a better look.

‘Star Wars: Force Arena’ Hits Mobile Today

Today Disney has launched a new Star Wars game for mobile devices called Star Wars: Force Arena.

 width=

This free-to-play game let’s players compete in online versus battles of one-on-one or two-on-two. Collect cards to upgrade members of your squad, then build and customize your squad with just the right characters. Genre wise, the game seems to be somewhere between a real-time strategy, and a MOBA, so players can engage in real-time action gameplay, as opposed to the turn based gameplay found in many recent mobile Star Wars games.

Force Arena features over 80 notable heroes from the Star Wars universe such as Darth Vader, Han Solo, and Princes Leia Organa. In addition to classic characters, the game also features characters from Rogue One, including Jyn Erso and Grand Moff Tarkin.

The game does include in-app purchases that can provide players with new characters and units. Hopefully players won’t be able to gain an advantage simply by paying for bigger and better units or characters.

Star Wars: Force Arena is available now for iOS and Android devices.
