SONY And Disney Had Been Working To Bring Spider-man To The Marvel Cinematic Universe

collagecxcxcxcx

SONY Pictures was recently hacked and some of their internal memos and emails were leaked onto the internet. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that according to one of the memo’s, SONY and Disney had been working together to reach an agreement that would bring Spider-man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe that Disney owns. These discussions were mentioned by SONY’s Motion Picture Chief, Amy Pascal. The emails mention that SONY had extensive discussions with Walt Disney and the talks even included Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, and Kaz Hirai, SONY’s CEO. The emails revealed that the plan was to have Spider-man appear in Captain America: Civil War and that Disney/Marvel would co-produce a new trilogy of Spider-man movies. Unfortunately one of the emails mentions that the talks broke down and that SONY was thinking of doing animated Spider-man comedy based movies instead.

Luckily there is still some good news surrounding this. Latino Review reported this week that the deal is steal very much alive. Apparently SONY Japan, which is the parent company of SONY Pictures, is angry due to the recent email leaks that is hurting SONY’s reputation world wide. SONY Japan has been disappointed at how the Amazing Spider-man movies franchise has been handled and the leaked emails didn’t help matters. SONY Japan thinks the Marvel deal for Spider-Man is still on the table and they want to renegotiate as a return to “quality”, that a 60/40 (Disney/SONY) split can be negotiated and SONY Pictures’ hard-line stance of wanting creative control is now mostly moot in the eyes of the higher-ups. SONY is also planning on holding a Spidey-summit in January to decide what is the best direction to go.

“Avengers: Age Of Ultron” is also scheduled for re-shoots to film additional scenes in January.  Still speculation on my part, but it is possible that the plan is to bring Spider-man into the movie as a cameo or after credit scene. There definitely is something in the works, let’s just hope that things work out well for both parties. And us.

The Punisher Kills The Cast Of FOX’s Fantastic Four Reboot Movie

detail

In case you needed any more proof that Disney/Marvel and FOX are not the best of friends, you just have to look at the most recent issue of The Punisher #12. Disney/Marvel and SONY seem to be getting on just fine and seem to be (hopefully) working out a deal to bring Spider-man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But FOX and Disney/Marvel, not so much. Marvel is ending the Fantastic Four comic just prior to the release of FOX’s Fantastic Four movie, which comes out next year. Rumor is that Marvel wants to avoid giving any kind of promotion towards the film. In the latest issue of The Punisher, Frank Castle gets rid of the cast that is playing the Fantastic Four. The cast for the upcoming movie is Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Jamie Bell and Kate Mara. In the panels below, it seems that The Punisher feels the same way I do about the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. Thanks Punisher.

“Star Wars” Theme Park Attractions Will Be Based On New Movies, Not Old

vader2

Variety reported today that according to Disney CEO, Bob Iger, future Star Wars theme park attractions will be based solely on the new movies, starting with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. Development on Star Wars theme park attractions was halted for Imagineers until a clear vision of what J. J. Abrams was intending for The Force Awakens was fully revealed to them. Iger felt it best to have Star Wars attractions based on future movies, basically saying, someone who sees the Force Awakens wants to go on a ride based on the movie they just saw. At one point Iger mentions that the rides may have a blend of past, future and present, so there will be some presence of the original 6 movies in future attractions.

Original Source: Variety.com

Two years after buying Lucasfilm for $4 billion, Disney is starting to reveal just how “Star Wars” will be integrated into the company’s theme parks.

Main attractions will be based on new sequels and spinoffs — the first of which, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” bows next year — not the older films in George Lucas’ sci-fi franchise, according to Walt Disney Co. chief Bob Iger.

“There will be a much larger ‘Star Wars’ presence in our parks globally,” Iger said during a Q&A at Variety‘s Dealmakers Breakfast on Wednesday, presented by Bank of America and sponsored by Delta. “But we want to do this big, which takes time, and to do it right.”

For Disney and its team of theme park designers at Walt Disney Imagineering, that meant waiting until director J.J. Abrams could reveal his plans for “The Force Awakens.”

Disney could have easily started producing new rides based on the original “Star Wars” films — and early development on new rides did revolve around the first six “Star Wars” movies. But Iger didn’t want a situation in which theme park guests would be disappointed with an attraction after seeing “The Force Awakens.”

I didn’t want someone to say, ‘I just saw the movie and there’s nothing in that movie in this (attraction),” Iger said. “We waited to see what this film would have in it.”

As a result, Iger stopped early development on theme park attractions at Imagineering. “We couldn’t tell them what was new,” Iger said, until Abrams was finished developing and producing the sequel. “I slowed it all down so what we come forward with will have a blend of the past, present and maybe the future,” referencing upcoming sequels and spinoff films. “Now we have a sense of what’s in ‘Star Wars 8,’ and what some of the standalone films will have in them.”

The older films, their worlds and characters already are featured in the “Star Tours” attraction at Disney’s parks.

Iger has previously said that “Star Wars” would have “a significant presence” inside the company’s resorts. “Why not?” he asked on Wednesday. “We bought the thing. We can do that now.” The first look at the new “Star Wars” attractions are expected to be revealed next year.

During the conversation with Variety co-editor-in-chief Claudia Eller inside the Palm restaurant in Beverly Hills, Iger noted how he has repeatedly stressed to Abrams that the future of the franchise and the company’s acquisition of Lucasfilm rides on the success of “The Force Awakens,” out in theaters Dec. 18, 2015.

“I keep telling J.J. Abrams this is a $4 billion movie,” Iger said, in reference to the Lucasfilm deal, not the actual budget of the film. “We need to treat this very special. It’s an unbelievable privilege and unbelievable responsibility to take a jewel and treat it in a way that is respectful of its past but brings it into the future.”

Early reaction to a teaser trailer already has been strong.

The 88-second teaser, which includes just 39 seconds of footage, has been viewed over 110 million times, Iger said, in addition to 40 million views of spoofs created around the footage.

Disney nearly didn’t release a trailer, Iger admitted. Abrams is known for wanting to keep footage of his films under wraps. But the rabid “Star Wars” fanbase prompted Disney to come up with the brief introduction of what the new film would look like.

Iger said there’s a big opportunity to reach a younger demo that’s attracted to the”Star Wars” franchise through Lego toys, as well as foreign markets like China where the original films in the 1970s and ’90s weren’t as popular because of the size of the theatrical market in those territories at the time.

Disney is anticipating that “curiosity will extend beyond the people who grew up with the movies,” Iger said, and Disney “has done a tremendous amount of work in how (the films) will be brought to market and where the opportunities are” in growing the franchise.

One way to do that is the way “The Force Awakens” is produced.

Iger noted how Abrams has relied more on physical sets and props that are significant in size and scope, rather than computer-generated imagery.

“That will give the film a look that will be extremely respectful of the look George (Lucas) created in the ’70s,” Iger said, “and will play well with ardent ‘Star Wars’ fans and play well with audiences today.”

Iger noted how the use of computer-generated graphics has made filmmaking seem “too easy.” “There’s a sameness to a lot of these films today,” Iger said. “The wow factor isn’t what it used to be. J.J. decided to create the physical wow factor.”

Character Names Revealed For “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”

The-Force-Awakens

Today EW.com received and exclusive reveal of some of the new characters that were seen in the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” trailer. J.J. Abrams, the film’s co-writer and director, and Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, decided to reveal the identities of some of their new characters exclusively to EW—and they did it in a retro fashion that should bring a smile to anyone familiar with the phrase “Collect ‘Em, Trade ‘Em.” EW was presented with a mocked up version of the original Topps Star Wars trading cards that debuted in 1977.

Here are the cards revealed in card number order, which according to J. J. Abrams, the numbering of these cards bears significance:

RUMOR: “Star Tours: The Adventures Continue” To Add Planets & Characters from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”

The site Star Wars Underworld is claiming that an inside source has informed them that the first Star Wars additions coming to Disney theme parks post-purchase will be additions to Star Tours: The Adventures Continue at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and Tokyo Disneyland  based on characters and locations from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.

Star-Tours-Poster-Crop

Star  Tours: The Adventures Continue was designed by Disney Imagineers and members of Lucasfilm to easily insert new destinations and characters at any time. With the current iteration of the attraction, any new film sequences could be created and programmed separately and then exported to the ride. meaning any addition would result in little-to-no downtime for the attraction. We have speculated about these additions several times on our podcast, but this is this first outside report.

Recently, we reported that Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that there will be a much larger presence of Star Wars themed attractions based on the new sequels and spin-offs. Adding new destinations based on “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to Star Tours would seem to go along with his plans.

Stay tuned as more information becomes available

Frank Oz To Voice “Yoda” in “Star Wars Rebels”

ytyt

When I first saw this story, I kind of just brushed it off as no big deal. I kind of figured at some point the crew from Rebels would end up on Dagobah and meet up with Yoda (not that it is needed). Then I realized that “Frank Oz”, who was the voice and the man behind Yoda (that last part pertains to the Original Trilogy), is actually coming back to voice the character that he first helped give life to in The Empire Strikes Back.

In the previous series, The Clone Wars, Tom Kane provided the voice of Yoda. To have Oz come back is a bit of a big deal. Many people love imitating Yoda, but no one can voice Yoda like Oz does. A few months ago, James Earl Jones also came back to voice Darth Vader for Rebels. I just find it interesting that some of the original cast is contributing to the series.

The episode, “Path of the Jedi” will air Monday, January 5th, 2015 at 9PM on Disney XD. It will also be available a week before online through the Watch Disney App on Monday, December 29th.

Rumor: “Star Wars: Episode VII” Teaser Coming Christmas Day

SW-cover

The big rumor of the day is that Disney may release a teaser trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII on Christmas Day. According to the John Williams Fan Network, John Williams, composer and conductor for all of the Star Wars films, will be working on trailer music in November for the next chapter in the Star Wars Saga.

This was posted today:

A reliable source just said JW received a trailer from JJ Abrams on Monday, Oct 20.  JW has already written new Star Wars music to accompany this trailer.  This new trailer music will feature new music and will be recorded on November 15 in LA with full orchestra.  Still determining if the score will be recorded in London due to advanced age of composer/conductor.  14 hour flight to LA not too kind on 82 year old.

How possible is this? I think the probability is very high and here is why.

  • Into The Woods, which is a Disney production, will be released on December 25th,. This means that they do have a movie to attach it to. Before the days of the internet, this would be an excellent way to get people into the theaters to see Into The Woods and increase it’s box office take, but more than likely this will also be available on the internet as well.
  • It was made official that John Williams has received completed footage and has actually started composing music for the film a few weeks ago.
  • Most of the cast, including Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, have completed filming their roles and the rest of the cast should finish up by next week. Now all that has to be done is editing, music and the biggest task, special effects. So it is possible that we can see a teaser before the end of the year.
  • A teaser is usually 30 seconds to a minute and sometimes it doesn’t even include any real footage. If we do receive a teaser, I could see some old scenes from the Original Trilogy, accompanied by John Williams music and possibly at the very end the reveal of either the villain or Luke Skywalker.

In all honesty, that would be enough to get fans really hyped for Episode VII. The only thing that concerns me is that we have yet to hear of a title for the movie. Although, they still could just put Episode VII as a temporary title. Again this is just a rumor, but I think the odds are pretty good that this will happen.

Star Wars: Episode VII is the first chapter of a new trilogy that takes place 30 years after Return Of The Jedi. The movie is being directed by J. J. Abrams and will reunite the original cast as well as new cast members to continue the Star Wars saga.  Star Wars: Episode VII is scheduled to be released domestically on December 18th, 2015.

Marvel Entertainment Announces A Slew Of New Movies For The Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase 3

Capturerrrr

Marvel Entertainment held a special event today at the El Capitan Theater announcing so much stuff, I don’t know where to begin!

B1DjfrMIAAA2Xic

I would say that the biggest news is that Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans were joined on stage by Chadwick Boseman, who will play the title role in Black Panther. This is an excellent choice! He looks just like the character in the comics and I loved him portraying baseball legend, Jackie Robinson, in “42”. Boseman also portrayed the living legend James Brown in Get On Up.

So lets go down the line of what was announced.

B1De3VBCEAA5H4x

First off Captain America 3 is officially titled Captain America: Civil War. This will be Captain America, Chris Evans, vs Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr., with fate of all of the Marvel superheroes hanging in jeopardy. Civil War was a comic book series that put half of the Marvel superheroes, representing pro registration of superhero identities with the Government against the other superheroes, who felt it was their right to keep their identity a secret. Captain America leads the side against registration and Iron Man leads the side that is for registration and it does lead to a Civil War in the Marvel Universe. Captain America: Civil War will be released on May 6, 2016.

thumb900_phpkjas6ydslogopost

Next up we have Doctor Strange. I was expecting an official announcement of Benedict Cumberbatch, but no such luck. He is in final negotiations with Marvel to play the Doctor, but so was Joaquin Phoenix, so we will still have to wait. After his career is destroyed, Dr. Stephen Strange, a brilliant but arrogant surgeon gets a new lease on life when a sorcerer takes him under his wing and trains him to defend the world against evil. Doctor Strange will be released on November 4th, 2016.

thumb900_phpblp3rrgotglogopost

Next we have the sequel to this year’s successful Guardians Of The Galaxy. Right now it is called Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 and it could very well be the final title of the film. So not giving any clues with a subtitle, I have no idea what the storyline will be about. I do know that they will add more members to the team. Rumors are that it will be Nova or Captain Marvel (see below). Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 will be released on May 5th, 2017.

B1DdMSwCMAAWqWB.jpg large

Thor 3 is officially titled, Thor: Ragnarok. “Ragnarok” was a series in the comic Thor that brought about the destruction of Thor, Asgard, and all of its inhabitants for several years. The story would have a lasting impact on the Marvel Universe for several years, removing Thor and his supporting cast from Marvel’s publishing schedule. Could this mean that we will see the new female Thor in Phase 4? Thor: Ragnarok will be released on July 28th, 2017.

B1DdD8tCUAE4b2k.jpg large

We finally have confirmation of a Black Panther movie! And as I mentioned above Chadwick Boseman will portray Black Panther. The royal leader, T’Challa, of an African nation, Wakanda, is bestowed with super human powers to protect his kingdom against invaders. Wakanda is rumored to be one of the locations that will be in Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Wakanda is also the only place that has the material necessary to form Captain America’s shield, vibranium. Black Panther will be released on November 3, 2017.

I doubt Marvel was listening to me last week when I said that after Warner Brother’s announcement of a Wonder Woman movie for 2017, Marvel and Disney need to step up their game and releases a movie based on one of the most popular female superheroes in the Marvel Universe, Ms. Marvel. It’s complicated, but Captain Marvel is Ms. Marvel. Captain Marvel (or sometimes referred to as Ms. Marvel) is basically Marvel’s version of Wonder Woman as far as powers go (strength, flight, speed, endurance, etc). Her cosmic powers were obtained from the original Captain Marvel (not Shazam). Definitely a fun and exciting character. Captain Marvel will be released on July 6th, 2018.

B1DdgVGCIAAENtS.jpg large

My first encounter with The Inhumans was in early Fantastic Four comics and my first impression is that they are weird. But I also thought Guardians Of The Galaxy was a weird group and look what happened to them. This could be the answer to Fox’s X-Men franchise. Basically aliens, The Kree (Guardians Of the Galaxy), experiment on humans to create a super race which result in a group of superheroes, The Inhumans. Inhumans will be released on November 2nd, 2018.

B1DeU3FCIAAUtQE

OK, this is the big one! We are finally getting the Infinity War, which will be Avengers 3, and split into two movies. So what is the Infinity War? Remember the guy that appeared in the after credits scene in Avengers? And then that same guy appeared for a bit in Guardians Of The Galaxy? That is Thanos and he is a super baddy. Thanos wants one thing and that is to control the Universe and in order to do that he needs to find 5 Infinity Stones, which we have already seen 3 of them in the last few Marvel movies. Combining the 5 Infinity Stones will create the Infinity Gauntlet, making Thanos the most powerful being in The Universe. With a guy this powerful, the Avengers will need some help. So expect to see Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Guardians Of The Galaxy and the Inhumans join the Avengers to join in the Infinity War. Avengers: Infinity War will be released in two parts. Part one will be released in May 2018 and part two will be released in May 2019.

Marvel Entertainment released a photo of Thanos, Josh Brolin, wearing the Infinity Gauntlet:
