Jack Lindquist, Disneyland’s first president, died on Sunday February 28 at age 89.

Lindquist was a thoroughly Mid Century man, at the helm of a physical representation of much of the zeitgeist of the times, he promoted and later ran a place that made popular cinematic genres into live experiences. He was the Barker in Chief for a venue that promoted a vanguard American future and celebrated its realized Manifest Destiny.

Lindquist, by nature of his age was somewhat blithe to many sociological changes in the country through the park’s first decades, which may have been to his and Disneyland’s advantage. A Frank Sinatra guy in the age of Led Zeppelin. That ability to stay comfortably behind the times helped define an essential element of the Disney parks’ personality: reassurance.

Before his Disney career, he was an ad man. The TV and radio director for the small Mays and Company Advertising. Rep-ing client Kelvinator Appliance, he got to see the park during its construction. He said, “I fell in love with the place.” He came to work at the fledgling park later just a month after its opening.

He was an ebullient cherub, with a constant gleam in his eye, bad teeth, and a bit of Barnum on his breath. At about five feet tall and with a similar circumference, he was in every way the antithesis of what we now think of as the persona of a Disney executive. He worked directly with Walt Disney for a time. He was a bit star struck, but he observed the bosses’ well known insistence on a first name basis environment. Except, Walt thought that Lindquist’s first name was Bob. When it was pointed out to Disney by a third party, he said, “he looks like a Bob to me.”

But his appearance and lack of recognition belied his mastery of advertising and a promotion. Most of his campaigns, now in the first class promotion playbook, were being made up of whole cloth at the time. Disney Dollars, The Magic Kingdom Club involving Southern California workplaces, Grad Nites, and the, “I’m Going To Disneyland” championship sports campaign were all created under his tutelage.

He functioned as the Master of Fun on junkets involving Anaheim city officials, cementing a friendly, some say too cozy, relationship with the city. (Apparently there was some drinking and lots of card playing on these trips.) He was also very active in Republican politics locally and nationally. He had a friendly association with H.R. Haldeman and Dwight Chapin two associates from the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency. Haldeman and Chapin became White House aides and later both served prison time for their involvement in the Watergate Scandal that felled a U.S. President.

Returning to Lindquist’s Mad Man/Ad Man expertise, Disney had been known as a company that was loathe to buy television advertising. When you have a Sunday night TV show that often finishes in the top 10, you might think it unnecessary. But using carefully targeted ads for Walt Disney World and precisely measuring the results, he proved that ads brought scads of patrons from the places the spots had been shown. This changed Disney advertising practices forevermore.

When Micheal Eisner and Frank Wells entered the Walt Disney Company in 1984, they generally eschewed most of the local management of the U.S. Parks. But Lindquist seemed to be a favorite. Previously, the park properties had functioned with no rank higher that a vice president reporting to Burbank. That structure may have been a holdover from the long past days when Walt Disney functioned as the top man, without title. The new administration elevated Lindquist to the position of President of Disneyland in 1990.

After his installment, he found that long lead times in developing ambitious new attractions would leave him without a major draw for the coming summer of 1992. In short order he put together a hybrid group of Imagineers and Disneyland hands to put together a live show to run for four years on the Rivers of America section of the park. The result was Fantasmic. An American Son et lumière. The show still runs at Disneyland Park and has been exported to other Disney parks.

In spite of this success, and the fact that he was not a designer or Imagineer, he is most certainly most responsible for creating another singular area, at Disneyland. But the creation of that special spot was a painful process.

During the 1980s, the park relied on themed promotions to draw locals in the non summer months, Blast to the Park, State Fair, and Circus Fantasy among them. With the promotions came outsized icons at the park hub, in the shadow of the park’s central symbol, Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. A giant juke box, a car elevator to dispense giveaway Chevy Geo cars, and even a motorcycle cage called the Globe of Death. Park purists complained.

It fell to Lindquist who was certainly aware of, if not directly involved in these ungainly curations, to devise an elegant solution to the scenic and thematic intrusions. The answer was the Partners statue. An untouchable element. Functionally a sacred spot. A must see, a must photo, a must selfie… for now and ever after.

In his memoir, In Service To The Mouse Lindquist related a story about a Christmas Eve walk he took in Disneyland.

Lindquist says he observed a family walking down Main Street U.S.A. The little girl in the family turned to her mother and said, “Mom, this really was better than having Santa Claus.” When Lindquist told this story, he deducted that the parents had told the children that if they went to Disneyland, Santa could not bring presents.

This story seems like an ad man’s dream. Using emotion to gain acceptance. And whether or not it happened, it is faithful to Lindquist’s feelings about Disneyland and to much of the public’s relationship to the park.

He said “this one brief moment proved to be my most meaningful memory at the park because it symbolized what we mean to people. We are not a cure for cancer, we are not going to save the world, but if we can make people happy for a few hours, or for a day, then we are doing something worthwhile.”

California Adventure’s “Frozen – Live at the Hyperion” Stage Musical Gets Opening Date, Sing-Along Closing

“Frozen – Live at the Hyperion,” the new musical adaptation based on Disney’s blockbuster animated film, will officially open at the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure park on May 27, 2016.

FrozenHyperion1280

The Creative Entertainment team, led by Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Entertainment Portfolio Executive Dana Harrel, is hard at work bringing to the stage a production that stays true to the emotional journey of Anna and Elsa while presenting a unique take on the material through elaborate costumes and sets, stunning special effects and show-stopping production numbers. To bring this vision to life, Dana and her team are collaborating with some of the most noted talents working in theater today including Director Liesl Tommy (Broadway’s “Eclipsed”), Writer Chad Beguelin (Tony Award® nominee for “Disney’s Aladdin” and “The Wedding Singer”), Musical Supervisor and Arranger Jason Michael Webb (Musical Director for Broadway’s “The Color Purple”), Puppet Designer Michael Curry (Tony Award® winner for “Disney’s The Lion King”) and more.

With “Frozen – Live at the Hyperion” coming this summer, Disney will be closing “For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration.” Fans of the sing-along will want to catch it one last time, before it melts away forever on April 17, 2016.

Ginnifer Goodwin Wants Zootopia to be a New Land at Disney Parks

If you read my review of Zootopia earlier this week, you no doubt know that I absolutely love this film. While somewhat embarrassing to admit, by the opening night of the film last evening, I had already seen the movie 4 times and I’m not completely certain that I won’t be seeing it again before it leaves theaters honestly. While I love the animated films of the Walt Disney Company, my first love has always been the theme parks, so when I see a new animated movie, I often drift into a daydream and think about what it could possibly bring in a three-dimensional environment. Needless to say with how much I loved the film, I REALLY, REALLY want to see Zootopia at the domestic theme parks, but Ginnifer Goodwin (voice of Judy Hopps) definitely wants it more…

Goodwin is the voice of Judy Hopps, the optimistic first-ever Bunny cop of the ZPD

Goodwin (who also stars in ABC’s Once Upon a Time) is a lifelong Disney fan and was even tapped to help open New Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom back in 2012. Ginnifer has been waiting on the call to be a Disney animated character her entire career and literally accepted the job the second John Lasseter began to ask her over the phone. Goodwin admittedly calls Lasseter her personal “Walt Disney”, and is constantly “bugging” him (in her own words) to let her remain at the Disney studios is some capacity for the rest of her career. However, she is also constantly “bugging” John to make Zootopia a reality at Disneyland.

Goodwin and Lasseter together at the 2015 D23 Expo

Ginnifer admittedly visits Disneyland at least once a month (which makes her pretty endearing to this Disney fan), her favorite attraction being the Haunted Mansion, but it sounds like she could very easily have a new favorite attraction should the world of Zootopia come to life at Disney Parks. When I asked Goodwin about if she would like Zootopia in the parks and what kind of presence it should have, she excitedly told me she wanted a Zootopia-land, “I want all of the world!”

Since she visits Disneyland at least once a month, the voice of the ever-optimistic Judy Hopps obviously is dreaming of the Cars Land treatment for her first full-length Disney animated feature. After seeing the movie a few times, I’m in complete agreement. While I don’t necessarily think Zootopia would be a great fit for Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure, I think Disney’s Animal Kingdom will be itching for a more kid-friendly world after the opening of Pandora: The World of AVATAR next year, a niche that could easily be filled by, oh, let’s say a sprawling, mammal-filled metropolis?

The city of Zootopia is big and immersive, perfect for a theme park

The city of Zootopia is big and immersive, perfect for a theme park

The level of detail in the world seen in the movie would undoubtedly translate amazingly to the theme park realm, so I have no doubt after you see Zootopia that you will be dreaming of visiting Tundra Town or Sahara Square someday soon on a Disney vacation. Well, you can take solace in knowing that Ginnifer Goodwin wants that too.

Disney Stuck on the Drawing Board: Beastly Kingdom

By Joe Notaro

Drawing-board-300x349

In anticipation for the completion and opening of Pandora: The World of Avatar in 2017, it seemed appropriate to look back at an original plan that would have occupied the now future space that Avatar will inhabit. It seems time to resurrect the Stuck on the Drawingboard series.

image
Of all of the lands of Animal Kingdom that were operational on opening day on April 22, 1998, there was planned to be a land that visitors were both hopeful and excited to see constructed. Sadly that expansion never came, and now the land that replaced it. is being transformed into Pandora: The World of Avatar.

Beastly Kingdom was immediately a rock-solid plan in the minds of Disney executives. Animal Kingdom was supposed to feature animals of all types; those in real-life, those who walked the planet but have become extinct, and finally animals of the mystical realm. These plans would have placed Beastly Kingdom squarely in the area now inhabited by Camp Minnie-Mickey. What people do not know, is that Camp Minnie-Mickey had a remnant of the un-built Beastly Kingdom: A dragon shaped fountain within its boundaries. The plan of Beastly Kingdom was to create an area for all mythical and fantastical animals including Unicorns, Dragons, and sea monsters among others.

image

The land would have been broken up into two distinct areas: A good “realm” and an evil “realm”. Each of these “realms” of Beastly Kingdom would have a “weenie” or landmark distinguishing itself from the other. The good side would feature an attraction called Quest of the Unicorn, as well as a Fantasia styled boat ride. The evil side of Beastly Kingdom would have featured Dragon Tower, an old castle in ruins inhabited by a fire breathing Dragon. As such the land would have been one of the focal points of the park, and likely would have kept Animal Kingdom from its initial failures.

The area never came to be, and much to do with budgeting and finances. Rumor has it that Michael Eisner had to choose between the Beastly Kingdom area and the Dinoland area as costs soared on the park. Seeing as Disney was in production of the movie DINOSAUR, whcih was a pet project of Esiner’s and already had hundreds of millions of dollars sunk into it, they believed that would be the better land to create and promote (How did that film do?). As such Camp Minnie-Mickey was put in as a last minute placeholder so they could come back to the project later. Many of the Imagineers involved with the project eventually left the company in some sort of disgust at the failure of the construction amid the planning and man hours used in creation. Many of these Imagineers found their way to Universal, and were involved and used most elements from Beastly Kingdom in the creation of The Lost Continent. Proof of this was found in Dueling Dragons (Now known as Dragon Challenge) as the concept of two dueling dragons within a ruined castle was lifted straight from the Animal Kingdom plans.

In an interesting aside, maybe Disney executives had the right idea, as the land that former imagineers created has since been “swallowed” by the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and was never really all that popular with guests (nor was the park until Potter opened for that matter). It appears that some of the issues revolved around a convoluted story and a disjointed theme.

image

Some elements of Beastly Kingdom are still evident in Animal Kingdom even today:

  • The Marquee of the park logo still includes a silhouette dragon among the animals walking behind the Animal Kingdom name.
  • One of the parking lots of the park was and still is titled Unicorn.
  • There is a statue of a Dragonhead above the ticket booths, though no Dragon exists in the park.
  • Fire blasts would fly from a cave near Camp Minnie-Mickey while guests passed on the Discovery River Cruise. This also included a suit of armor and an overhead announcement to all of the guests on-board the vessels of the short-lived attraction.

Beastly Kingdom was an enormous undertaking that the Disney Company decided was not cost-effective or feasible with the opening of the park, or even in the years following once it was mostly copied for Islands of Adventure. Though there were and still are elements of the Beastly Kingdom concept included in the park (proving the seriousness of the creation of the land), this land has been permanently shelved in favor of AVATAR and Expedition Everest, two attractions also centering on mythical creatures, whether they are from ancient lore or the silver screen.

What we are left with is this simple question: what could have been and will AVATAR surpass what this never-created land might have been?
