Proposed $1 Billion Disneyland Resort Expansion May Hinge On Admission Tax Halt; D23 Expo May Be Light on Announcements

The Orange County Register reported today that a proposed Disneyland Resort expansion may be contingent on the city of Anaheim not imposing an admission tax on tickets to the two theme parks.

According to the article Disney has stated that “expansion of the parks is contingent on the approval of the ticket-tax exemption. The company also said they don’t know potential rides, themed areas or other details yet, but that construction would begin no later than 2017. It is also not clear if the expansion would involve Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure, or both. Disney signaled that a new park, or “third gate” is not in the offing at this time.

The idea of an admission tax on the Anaheim Disney attractions has a long history, but such a tax, while advocated by the city at several junctures, has never been levied. The current tax agreement dates to the development of Disney California Adventure. To facilitate the construction of that park and the Downtown Disney district, Anaheim agreed not to levy an admission tax for 20 years. The city also agreed to build the Mickey & Friends parking structure on Disney property and made infrastructure improvements in the resort district.

No Disney park in the world currently has an admission’s tax.

No News Is Not Good News

The revelation that new development at the Disneyland Resort is far from “ready for prime time” casts a little pall on the upcoming D23 Expo, where many Park faithful believed that “all would be revealed.” While plans for some modest attractions for the California parks could be divulged at the biennial gathering, it is thought that news of new projects for the parks at Walt Disney World is more likely, but certainly not certain.

You Can Fly! (Again!)

PPF101420

Two months past its projected reopening, Disneyland’s Peter Pan’s Flight is expected to reopen by the Park’s 60th Anniversary on July 17th.

The attraction, which opened with the Park in 1955, is getting a sprucing up, reportedly similar to the upgrades at the Alice In Wonderland ride, where high-tech video effects were added over the long standing practical elements to great acclaim. The two remaining Fantasyland dark-rides are also expected to be upgraded in the years to come.

Review: Marvel Collector Corps Box #2 (Ant-Man)

The first edition of the Marvel Collector Corps was a big hit for me. I enjoyed every piece of merchandise I received in my box, down to the variant comic book and 1-out-of 4 t-shirt designs I got. And while I am not the biggest Funko Pop! Fan, I did enjoy the Hulkbuster that came in the box. So Funko really had their work cut out for them with the second box, themed around Ant-Man. Let’s see how they did…

mcc ant man 01

First, just a quick recap, the Marvel Collector Corps is a bimonthly subscription service in the same style as Loot Crate. Except all of the merchandise that comes in the box is themed around Marvel, and is completely exclusive to the box, meaning that it’s the only place you’ll find this stuff. The second box in the series is Ant-Man, and right out of the gates I noticed the box was a little bit smaller than the Avengers series box. This is probably because the Hulkbuster was such a massive Pop! That they needed the XL sized box for it. I absolutely LOVE the Hank Pym style Ant-Man artwork on the outside of the box, and the inside has a similar comic strip pattern, this time themed all around Ant-Man and his glorious history. I love the way Funko is taking the time to really make the boxes that the product comes in really stand out.

The first items I noticed right away are a new patch and pin. Again, this is similar to what we got in the first box, but this time we have Ant-Man on the patch and pin instead of Ultron and Captain America, respectively. While some people might get angry at such similar items, I’m all for this. I love a nice series of patches and pins that I can easily show off either at a Disney park or a convention. Oh, and they also happen to look amazing!!

mcc ant man 03 mcc ant man 04

The next item that caught my eye is the exclusive Pop! That came with this installment. It features an unmasked Scott Lang bobblehead, with a miniature Ant-Man bobble head that’s about the size of his leg. What a cool idea by Funko to include something like this. First, I’m a huge fan of unmasked super heroes like this, so right away the bobble head is a hit for me. But the miniature, which Funko claims is their “smallest bobblehead ever” is such a neat little edition. Bravo!

mcc ant man 05

Next up we have the other vinyl collectible that Funko promised in their box, in the form of blind boxed Ant-Man mystery minis. There are 4 such designs, with even odds of getting any of them.

mcc ant man 07

This is a cool idea to make sure everyone gets a little something different in their boxes (last month it was a ¼ t-shirt design). While I am not the biggest mystery mini fan, I did get the one figure I really wanted (unmasked Scott Lang), and I also got Yellowjacket. I’ll definitely be trying to hunt down the other two. It is curious, however, that Funko did not put a Collector Corps exclusivity sticker on these, like they did for the Pop! That came in the box. Hopefully these don’t show up on the shelves of Hot Topic at some point. We’ll have to wait and see…

mcc ant man 09

Also included in every box is an exclusive t-shirt. This is an all black shirt, which features the red Ant-Man logo and a little drawing of Ant-Man that says “actual size”. While the shirt design is a little plain, I definitely like the humor on it and will for sure be wearing this when I see Ant-Man in theaters in a few weeks.

mcc ant man 08

Finally, we come to the last item, which is an exclusive variant cover. The issue they chose to use this month is issue #5 of the brand new ongoing Ant-Man series. This is a huge bonus for me because I’ve been collecting variant covers from this series, and this new cover will fit in very nicely with my collection.

mcc ant man 10

So, overall I’d score this box a 9/10. I really enjoyed all of the Ant-Man themed merchandise. My only complaint is that Collector Corps still isn’t protecting the comics they’re sending in the boxes, despite subscriber outcry. While my comic wasn’t damaged this month, the comic I got in the last box was bent and slightly torn. They really need to do something about this. Also, I am reserving judgment about the minis until it is confirmed they are exclusive. Otherwise, this was another fantastic edition of the Collector Corps, and I can’t wait to see what comes in August! To subscribe, check out www.collectorcorps.com.

Disney Reveals List of Allowable Guest Camera Accessory Items for Impending Selfie Stick Ban

20141202gopro00_1200x

Yes, starting tomorrow (June 30th, 2015), “selfie sticks” are banned from Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort theme parks, but many have wondered what this means for other tripod or mono-pod type camera items. Well, Disney will still be allowing many of these items in, but there are some exceptions:

  • Tripods that can be folded and stored in a reasonable size bag are allowed. Large tripods are not.
  • Extendable camera monopods are allowed.
  • GoPro brand name body and head harnesses are allowed.
  • Short, brand name GoPro handles are allowed.
  • Brand name or similar style GRIP & SHOOT handles are also allowed.
  • GoPro 3-way or similar style extending handles are not allowed.
  • Selfie sticks of any kind are not allowed.

Essentially, any extending sticks for phones or GoPro cameras are now banned. The rules on tripods have always been as stated above, so there is no surprise there either.

The Latest on Confirmed Closing of The Magic of Disney Animation: Meet and Greets Moving; Hiro and Baymax Leaving

Last week, we told you about rumors that the Magic of Disney Animation at Hollywood Studios will be closing. This week, some more solid information has been released to cast members at the attraction.

Magic_of_Disney_Animation

According to the cast, July 12th will be the final day to meet Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Hiro & Baymax (Big Hero 6) meet and greet experiences inside of the attraction. These meet and greet closing are confirmed, however, we are still not 100% certain on the exact date. We assume that the rest of the attractions inside including the “Mushu” show, interactive exhibits, and the Animation Academy will close the same day, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Mickey and Minnie will be moving to a new, yet-to-be-announced meet and greet location at Hollywood Studios, while Hiro and Baymax are leaving the park entirely with no new home in sight.

No other details are available at this time.

UPDATE: All of The Magic of Disney Animation Attraction to Close July 12th, 2015; Latest Details on Character Moves

Now that things have become official, more details are spilling on the July 12th, 2015 closure of the Magic of Disney Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios:

  • The entirety of the Magic of Disney Animation will close at the end of their operating hours on July 12th. This includes all of the meet and greets, the Mushu show, the interactive exhibits, and Animation Academy.
  • Minnie Mouse will once again join the other characters who meet in the central hub of the park, in front of the Chinese Theater.
  • Mickey Mouse will move to a new home across from the Studio Catering Company, exactly what the means is still to be determined, but we’re thinking the former AFI building.
  • The Animation Gallery store at the exit of the attraction will remain open until August.
  • It is still unclear if portions of the attraction will return or if there will be widespread demolition. This area of the park was not rumored for any major expansion as of yet, but plans may have shifted or changed recently.

Similar to Backlot tour, the future of this space remains unclear, but again, something BIG is up at Hollywood Studios and an announcement has to be close…

DisneyQuest To Close Soon to Make Way for the NBA Experience

c7eb4e26-b976-4dd9-833c-f06f08f5f64b

Yesterday was the last day guests would be able to purchase annual pass tickets for the DisneyQuest “indoor interactive theme park” on Downtown Disney’s West Side. The move confirms the yet-to-be-announced closure of the attraction in the coming months as part of the Disney Springs overhaul of Downtown Disney.

The NBA Experience is expected to replace DisneyQuest, using all of the space formerly occupied by the failed Disney experiment.

The NBA Experience at Walt Disney World Resort is going to be a one-of-a-kind destination featuring hands-on activities that put families and guests of all ages right in the middle of NBA game action. You’ll be able to explore inside the world of professional basketball with numerous interactive experiences and enjoy a restaurant and retail store.

The NBA Experience will replace DisneyQuest sometime in 2016.

ON THE AIR NOW – WDWNT’s Historic 60-Hour-Live Broadcast to Benefit Toys for Tots: Everything You Need to Know

Every year since 2008, WDW News Today has hosted a charity drive to raise money for the Toys for Tots Foundation. This year, we are taking the event to a whole new level, and we are asking you to be a part of this holiday tradition where we continue Walt Disney’s dream and try to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

Over 60 years ago, Walt Disney became one of the original sponsors of the Toys for Tots foundation, which ensures that every underprivileged child receives a toy during the holiday season. Walt and his animators personally designed the original Toys for Tots train logo that is still used today and the first poster created for Toys for Tots. It was also 60 years ago that Walt’s dream of Disneyland and the Disney Parks began, so…

REVIEW: Pirates of the Caribbean at Walt Disney World – Re-Imagining a Classic

POC_Feature Image

It’s been a couple of months since Pirates of the Caribbean has gotten underway after being in dry dock for an extended period, but now that we’re hitting some of the busiest days of the year the “refitted” Pirates of the Caribbean is again accepting crew members for current and future explorations. “Refurbishment” is probably not the best description for how Walt Disney World Imagineers spent a significant part of last summer. This most recent iteration of Magic Kingdom’s classic attraction is actually less of a refurbishment than a re-emergence.  While the enhancements could arguably be described as re-imagined,  they also effectively remain true to the attraction’s origins. The Imagineers have created a more real and immersive experience through lighting, texture, and color.

Your experience with the new Pirates of the Caribbean begins with the queue itself. As you enter the fort, the soldier dialogue makes it very clear that the pirates have arrived and the battle has begun. To begin the story even before a new crew member enters the attraction itself is a classic touch. This audio detail isn’t necessarily new, but it’s more prominent than it was prior to the recent closure. Continuing through the queue it becomes obvious that the lighting has been a point of emphasis during the update. There is improved consistency with the lanterns, and even the torch effects have been updated to appear more like a “flickering flame.” It’s subtle, but effective.

In the loading area there are still two lines — left and right. If you find yourself in the right loading line, pay attention. You just may be able to hear busy pirates nearby digging for buried treasure. And be sure to look ahead to the cave entrance as you embark on your journey. The cave entrance appears to reveal a difficult-to-discern but well-executed hint about the journey you’re about to embark on while also giving a small role in the story to the tower window.

As you approach the Grotto you still pass through the waterfall that now alternates between Davy Jones and Blackbeard. Blackbeard actually replaced Jones during the last revision so it’s good to see Jones again. The mermaid projections on the water are gone and that’s a little disappointing. But, to be honest, it was never a perfect fit to the overall sense of the story and felt somewhat forced by the feature films. That being said, you can still hear the mermaid song and, if you listen closely, maybe even a tail splash or two.

Dead Man’s Cove, for the most part, is the same. Originally, the back of this scene was open to provide a measure of depth, but during the Johnny Depp refurbishment this opening was closed off with sails and canvas material in order to better frame the scene. The space has been opened up once again and the depth has been restored. There is also newly scattered debris that contributes to an eerie and endless effect to the back of the cove. This decision adds more mystery for passers-by. The new expression of Dead Man’s Cove is one of the examples of how the Imagineers have pointed us back to the original Pirates.

The lack of light present in Hurricane Lagoon makes it difficult to notice that this scene has almost been completely rebuilt. The skeleton at the helm is much more believable than past versions. The lighting and colors so much more vibrant and immersive. Hurricane Lagoon had become tired over the years. The skeleton’s hair was matted and the colors were faded. In addition to the color and lighting, now there is quite a bit more movement — the skeleton’s hair moves with his clothes in the wind. The net effect is that Hurricane Lagoon is significantly more interesting and, ironically, more “alive”.

The newly refurbished Bombardment scene explodes with color. Again, the lights have obviously been adjusted, enhanced, or maybe just replaced — even the cloud effect on the back wall seems to be improved. Barbossa is now in his British uniform.  Although Barbossa only wore this uniform briefly in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, this draws more attention to him and that’s a good thing. It also appears that there is new or enhanced cannon movement. Additionally, the concussion cannons on the Wicked Wench and fort side have been re-activated. And is that gunpowder I smell?

Leaving the Bombardment scene you enter the seaport and the Well scene. Again, it’s subtle, but the well has been significantly upgraded. Look closely to see if you can find the first of three new Caribbean characters here in this scene. Beyond that, all new lighting contributes to an increased sense of drama. The coloration of the pirate faces in the prior iteration were exaggerated and aggressive, but that’s clearly been toned down to be more realistic. Now the colors are warm and less muted. Overall I would say that it’s much more theatrical or dramatic than before.

Similar touches are noticeable within the Auction scene, too, including a distinctly sweet yet musky projected scent that has been added. The auctioneer figure has been updated and has a great deal more fluidity. His facial expressions are enhanced and his animated movements more diverse. Watch for the detailed movement in his hand motion during “it be gold I’m after.” At a glance, the redhead is more believable than the prior show. New or enhanced lighting is obvious here, too. Overall the scene feels warm in tone and the light on the auctioneer casts a menacing shadow on the mercado wall which makes him somewhat Mephistophelian. Although the auctioneer is more devilish than ever, the redhead matches the intensity and has more noticeable attitude than before. And look for a second Caribbean character. It’s clear that the Imagineers are looking for greater authenticity and diversity. I wouldn’t be surprised to see female pirates in the future.

The cool blue tones in the Chase scene provide a nice contrast to the prior warmer ones earlier in the story. The pooped pirate is still holding a key to the treasure and there is now a visible map positioned on a crate to better support his lines as Jack Sparrow observes from a barrel nearby. Formerly, the map to the treasure was on the pirate’s leg – but it was very difficult to notice and consequently few people did. This helpful detail contributes significantly to the story later in the attraction. A third new and indigenous character appears in this area.

As you sail through the town, the night clouds are still visible and Old Bill is still loitering with the two cats and enjoying his rum. The Imagineers added a special touch here. Let’s just say that this pirate wreaks of a certain unsurprising “fragrance”!

The Burning City has always been an impressive scene but over the years it has been in dire need of this well-deserved refurbishment. Vibrant lighting, updated fire effects, and the addition of a wood burning aroma bring new life out of this scene. The torches now have the same “flickering flame” effect from the queue area and even the hairy-legged pirate’s jug and mug have been updated. Could this pirate hold clues about the fire and its origins? Be sure to look closely at the barefoot pirate with the pigs. This scene includes many new details for the most observant onlookers to discover.

And finally the Treasure Room comes into view. You want to talk bling! To start, it’s obvious this room glistens more than it ever has. For sure there is more gold but there are other enhancements, too. Once again, lighting effects have been helpful in giving this environment new life. Haunted Mansion fans will recognize the candle effect as reminiscent of Madame Leota’s seance candles. Also in the Treasure Room is the final piece of the story and how Jack found the loot. Remember the map in the pooped pirate scene? Piece the story together during your next cruise on the Caribbean.

Though subtle, the newest expression of Magic Kingdom’s Pirates of the Caribbean captures all the original glory of this famous pirate tale. And even though the California version can uniquely boast of Walt’s final touches, there remains in this mysterious grotto strong hints of its creator as well. Without dramatically altering the legacy or story, Disney Imagineering has done an outstanding job in giving us a re-imagined version of the Florida Pirate’s story. I’m thankful it’s a tale that continues to be told.
