25th Anniversary Gift with Purchase

When the light up set was announced, Disney talked about the idea of getting a Sorcerer Mickey and light up base with purchase of a full case, and now we have the details.

As particularly pin people know, often Disney does a Purchase with Purchase, meaning you still have to pay a few bucks for the other item. But in this case, it is a Gift with Purchase. Here are the details direct from Disney:

Gift with Purchase Promo: Free 3-inch Sorcerer Mickey Light Vinylmation (retail price $14.95) with purchase of full tray of the 3-inch 25th Anniversary Vinylmation Series. While Supplies last. Limit two (2) trays with free Sorcerer Mickey Light Up per Guest (From 5/28 – 6/3 ONLY!)

The case will cost $238.80 plus tax ($9.95 per blind box). Sorcerer Mickey as a stand alone buy is $14.95.

While certainly a nice treat for any collectors already picking up a case, does this giveaway sway anyone toward buying a case that might not already be doing so?

Villains 1: Magic Kingdom Under Attack

Last year, with the help of some readers, we documented the Villains 1 invasion of Florida. Well, after laying low for a while, they recently were seen around the Magic Kingdom. Apparently they thought The Swiss Family Robinson’s Tree House was a prime hideout location.

Bad Pete protects the ammo.

Bonsai takes lookout in the rocks.

Cruella stands guard on the bridge.

Kaa slithers up a rope for a surprise attack.

Madam Mim practices her potions.

Prince John relaxes in his cabin upstairs while the other Villains do the dirty work.

What is the old hag doing with all that fruit?

Governor Ratcliffe mans the cannons.

Shan Yu plots the course of attack.

Stromboli plays around in the music room.

Ursula is in charge of the water supply.
Jafar guards the treasures.

WDW Trading Event; News We Learned

The WDW Trading Night was full of previews as usual. Not much we haven’t seen in some form or another, but some great news including: Release Dates for Park 9, Duffy and Park Starz Variants. A ghost bride reveals herself for the first time. We got our first look at the Mascot Series. And oh ya, we learned of more Mickey’s Circus vinyls for the fall event!

MICKEY’S CIRCUS

Event Dates: September 7-9
Details: We were told of some Vinylmation that are not yet in the preview catalog, but will be available for the event. There will be two 9″ figures each with an LE 100. The CMs would not disclose the identity of the figures. There will also be another 3″ two pack featuring two bears. Again, the identity of the bears was not disclosed, but we can speculate based on the pins and Disney bears that we know. No Vinyls were on display, but we did get a look at 3 of the special pins:

Breakfast Pin

Dessert Pin

Early Bird Pin

MASCOTS
Release Date: June 22

Details: 4 figure open window series. Foam fingers, flags and hats highlight this series.

Donald! The faces on this series are amazing. The hat is fantastic.

Goofy has one of the best accessories I have ever seen… foam finger! What do you think of the shape of the right arm to make that effect happen?

Mickey has a cool baseball cap.

We have seen this Pluto, but this is why you don’t buy dumpster divers… the real figure comes with a flag. How cool is that!!?? Maria Clapsis has out done herself with this series.

PARK 9

Release Date: July 20
Price: TBA
Details: 12 figure blind box series. We have seen a picture of the pin box in the past, but we have some higher quality pictures of the pins here that show some of the detail.

AK Camp Mickey and Minnie Bear, AK Bat, ???

Typhoon Lagoon Gator, Dapper Dan, MK Train

Phineas

NERDS ROCK!

Figment

Stitch

DUFFY

Release Date: June 22 (online), July 6 (parks)
Price: TBA
Details: 2 figure open window series

I was worried about the color, but looks great in person.

The detail in person is great. They look so well produced and designed. Also, the size of Duffy sitting is the size of a 3″ Vinylmation. It appeared it might be a bit bigger. Not a bad thing.

PARK STARZ VARIANTS

Release Date: Varies (see below)
Price: TBA
Details: 4 variant figures to the Park Starz series. Each has an LE of 2500

Haunted Mansion Bride (June 8). The surprise of the bunch and in my opinion the best. Makes perfect sense and looks great.

Figment (June 22 online only). Love the sweater. The online only release for such a localized WDW character makes little sense to me.

Abe Lincoln (May 25)

Yeti (June 22)

Spotlight On: Custom Vinylmation Artist Tyler Carantit

Email DestinationVinylmation@gmail.com to have your work spotlighted

Destination Vinylmation: This custom is a little different than what we usually feature here, but the design as a whole makes it very interesting. Who did you create this for?
Tyler: I have a client that I actually introduced Vinylmation to the CEO, and she now collects them. They have an annual conference and in 2013 it will be at Disney’s Contemporary Resort! I was asked if I could make a custom vinyl to be given away with a complimentary full registration in a raffle to promote the conference.

DV: Can you tell us about the design process?
Tyler: This was the first time I have ever tried to do a custom Vinyl. I had a few concerns before I started. “What type of paint to use to make it look as factory finished as possible?”  “How do I get the logo on the figure and still be legible?”

I started the process by first going to my local printer, who helped me with my custom Vinylmation light box. We actually tried a sticker material they use to wrap cars with for advertising. You heat up the material and it conforms to the shape of the object. Problem is there are many small creases and areas where the material wouldn’t adhere to. I then did some research into craft paints. It seemed like that type of paint would be better for a more detailed design, however with such large areas of solid color, I thought you would see some brush strokes. I ultimately decided to try to use spray paint, I figured it would give me the most uniform color and finish.

For the design of the Vinylmation, I wanted to incorporate the colors of the logo and the logo itself. With spray paint as my medium, I figured I would have to make the design simple. Earlier renderings had the logo running down his back, but I figured if it was going to be displayed in the box, I wanted it to be on the front of the face. I painted the ears black to make them stand out; almost like a set of Mickey ears you would get at the park and recognition of where the conference would be held.

Let me just say, I give everyone props who make custom Vinylmations! So much work goes in to them! A few problems I ran into with spray paint were first, to take my time to achieve  a nice and uniform finish, and second to apply  many light coats of paint. I saw some pooling of paint a few times. Also, just touching them would leave fingerprints on them. I also masked out the paint on the face too early and it pulled up the paint on the finished parts. The two problems I did have once the piece was complete, was a little over spray between the black and white on the head and a little sticking between one of the arms and the body. I did put a clear coat over the Vinylmation after I was done and that made it so much more durable.

One thing I did want to share is the application of the red spray paint on the feet that gradually turns to yellow on the chest. I basically had one shot to get the paint to look good, so I put the Vinyl on a revolving tray (lazy Susan) and while spinning it, I sprayed from the bottom up!

For the logo on the face, I just had my printer make me some vinyl stickers that would be applied after the figure was done. Kind of the easy way out, but I wasn’t going to even try to paint it on after all the work I just did!

DV: One of the striking features about this creation is box. I really love the Contemporary on the back. It’s a great design and something we don’t usually see along with a custom.
Tyler: The box was actually an afterthought! As I was finishing up the figure itself, I thought to myself, “How do we promote the conference more?” I saw the box as a perfect promotional piece! It would also protect the Vinylmation itself!

I took apart the Create Your Own box, got all the measurements and then designed the box. I tried to add more info about the conference to the box because the figure was so simple.

DV: This is Tyler’s first custom Vinylmation, but he does have a web gallery full of Vinylmation themed desktop wallpaper he created that he has shared with all of us.

So Tasty Explained

So Tasty!

Where: Disney Stores and D-Streets

Price: $11.95

Details: Each 3″ figure is scented relating to its name and design.

Update 6/2/12 Root Beer Float and Grape Soda Added.

Update 5/29/12 In addition to Disney Stores on June 4, So Tasty will also release at D-Streets on June 8.

Update 5/25/12 The Vinylmation blog teased us with a few looks at the So Tasty line. I’m really starting to like the unique characterization of each.

Bacon Cheeseburger

What exactly will this smell like?

Frozen Lemonade

Ooooh so sour!

Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Cone

So tasty! Oh hey, I just got the name! lol

Popcorn

I hope this smells of butter. And lots of it!

Root Beer Float

Clear brown body to show off a yummy mug of ice cold soda. Then the head is a scoop of ice cream billowing over the cup. All topped off with a straw in the ear.

Grape Soda

A purple cup of Grape Soda pop. You can see the bubbles in the head with the straw and Ferris Wheel in the ear.

4/21/12 – The DV Staff gives initial opinions on this series… before product shots are shown:

Nick: They are targeted toward a specific audience for sure, kids and female. I’d have to say the initial designs are not as cute as say some Cutesters or many of the “cutesy” designs by say Maria Clapsis. Elements of the popcorn design are very cool however. The “disco” hair accessory to represent bubbling popcorn and the Ferris Wheels in the ears to represent fair grounds. The scent idea is cool. (how are those Jingle Smells scents holding up by the way to those who bought them?) I think they will sell well, especially as open window (if they are).

Annemarie: I think these are really cute, and it’s a good idea, but I don’t think I’ll be purchasing them; I usually like to stick to Disney-related stuff, it has to really blow me away for me to branch out from that. I like the designs though, the detail and expressions keep getting better and better in these. If this is an open-box series and there’s a food item I particularly enjoy, I may pick one up. A blind box series? I’ll pass.

Zoe: After seeing the so tasty Vinylmation preview, I think they look super cute! I love the idea that they will smell, like how jingle smells were. I hope the scents smell good. Also I love the use of the popcorn on top of the head, looks almost like Goofy’s afro. I love the details on these and think they will do great in the stores! The mint chip ice cream is cute, and it’s my favorite kind of ice cream so I will definitely need that one! I can’t wait to see how the rest turn out! 🙂

Next Wave of Disney Character Star Wars Action Figures

Again, no new Vinylmation on display, but plenty of Star Wars stuff. On display was a set of 6 Disney Characters as Star Wars action figures. At first I was excited to get a peak at the 6th series, but these do not seem to fall in line with the figures we are used to. (see series 5 here). First of, it’s a set of six. Second, there are repeat characters. And third, the quality seems a notch below. Take a look at the set below. It is themed toward the Phantom Menace and will be released in August at a retail price of $9.95.

Donald Duck is of course Darth Maul. In a Disney blog article, we were made to believe this would be available this weekend… it was not. It is an upgrade to the Darth Maul Donald we already have because this on has a robe made out of fabric.

Instead of having Goofy reprise his role as C-3P0, here he is TC-14. A protocol droid found in the Phantom Menace.

Mickey appears as a young Anakin Skywalker all ready to take on a pod race.

Minnie is once again Queen Amidala. She also was the same character in a previous action figure set. The had garb looks a little more intricate on this one.

Yep, that’s Pluto peeking out of R2D2. I always wondered how they would portray this droid in an action figure set. I think I like it, but may have to see it in hand, and not through glass, to be sure.

I always liked Stitch as Yoda, but do not need a second one in my collection… but I do need a Jedi Council chair!!! So you got me again Disney. Just like you got me to re-buy Mickey as Indiana Jones because you packaged him with Goofy and an Ark.
